The Secret Speyside (M) series is one of Signatory's most prized. This lot of extremely high-quality, first-fill oloroso sherry butts was distilled at the exceptional distillery across from the town of Craigellachie on the Easter Elchies estate. While the bottler is prohibited from naming the source explicitly on their labels, they've been cheeky enough to add (M) and we're certain here that this is not a bottle of MacDuff, Mortlach, Mannochmore or Miltonfuff. But, it seems that the Signatory was compelled to point out the incredible pedigree of these ba...

Kalinda is the long running house label for K&L that over the years has been the conduit for secret wines from some of the very top producers in the country. Silver Oak, Kosta Browne, Lewis Cellars, Turnbull, Duckhorn, and Cakebread are just some of the names that have supplied wines for this program in years gone by. However, none are as exclusive and more sought after than the winery that made this particular wine! So much so that we can't even buy their regular wines because they're strictly only availble to mailing list members and high-end restauran...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "As with many cuvées here, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Crossfire Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard is the best in the lineup. Smoked tobacco, chocolate, damp earth, and ripe black fruits all define the bouquet, and this beauty is full-bodied, has a round, supple, layered mouthfeel, velvety tannins, and a great finish. Drink this sexy, round, complex, satisfying 2019 over the coming 15+ years." (02/2023) 93 points James Suckling: "A red with lots of blackberry, chocolate and coffee character on the nose and palate, yet it comes...

95 points Decanter: "This deeply coloured wine has an inviting nose of dark cherry and chocolate. The palate is dense and rich, with mouth-coating blackberry fruit and layers of chocolate, savoury spice and gently chewy tannins. (2023 DWWA)" (06/2023) K&L Notes: Produced by the Union des Vignerons des Côtes du Rhône, the Boissy & Delaygue represents specific parcel selections from top growing areas overseen by the Union. The "Lou Pontias" is all from the best parel selections around the villages of Puyméras with plantings up to 400m of altitude and Ri...

Signatory has long been one of the preferred independent bottlers on the market. For almost three decades now, we've been selling Signatory because their cask selection process is second to none in the industry. They also have a knack for building incredible collections of rare casks, so walking through their warehouse is an absolute dream. As you pass Bowmore from the 70s and Port Ellen, you'll stumble by Dallas Dhu and Rosebank. Yet it's some of the modern stocks that are most shocking! Highland Park on its own is pretty rare outside of distillery bott...

Ribbon Ridge is often considered the prime sub-region in the Willamette Valley for world-class Pinot Noir. This tiny appellation is home to icons such as Beaux Freres, Sequitur, Ribbon Ridge Estate, Patricia Green, Brick House and more. Norris planted their small 10 acre estate in 2007 to a mix of heritage clones (Coury, Wädenswil, Pommard), plus some Dijon 667 and 115. The soils are Wilakenzie, an ancient marine sedimentary soil. 98 points John Gilman: "The 2015 Louis Roederer Cristal is composed this year from a cépages of sixty percent pinot noir and forty percent chardonnay, with twenty-five percent of the vins clairs raised in oak barrels. As is customary, the still wines do not go through malolactic fermentation for Cristal and the wine was finished with a dosage of seven grams per liter in this vintage, after aging nearly seven years sur lattes. It delivers a beautifully refined aromatic constellation of apple, nectarine, a superbly complex base of chalky minerality, a touc...

95 points James Suckling: "Dense and powerful 2016 Chianti Classico with a deep and rich palate of fruit that is tight and compact. Lots of polished tannins to frame the wine. Full-bodied. The spice, bark, and dried-mushroom character highlights the ripe and luscious fruit. Drink or hold." (04/2019) 95 points Wine Advocate: "The Mazzei family was one of the first and most enthusiastic advocates of the Gran Selezione movement. Their 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli is a crowning achievement for this storied Chianti Classico wine...

97 points Decanter: "Pure and precise with a fine bead and great balance. Classic Chenin pear and apple aromatics with a streak of lemon. Vibrantly textured with a lemony freshness and a hint of toast on the finish. (DWWA 2022)" (06/2022) K&L Notes: Maison Laudacius is an association of farmers working in the small region of Montlouis-sur-Loire. Founded in 1961 it is made up of 18 of these growers, all farming sustainably across the three villages that make up the Montlouis appellation. The soils are primarily clay-silica over the famed Turonian chal...
98 points Wine Advocate: "First made in 1971, this legendary Italian wine now celebrates its 50th birthday. Happy Birthday, Tignanello! The Marchesi Antinori 2021 Tignanello (made with 79% Sangiovese, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc) pulls on all the heartstrings. To be released in May, the wine shows a quintessentially pretty taste profile with tart fruit flavors, redcurrant, tea leaf, heritage rose, crushed white pepper, licorice, nutmeg, clove and chopped mint. It opens slowly to reveal more richness and exuberance with time, becoming dow...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Vinified primarily in concrete with a small proportion of whole-bunch fermentation, there's a lifted, airy freshness to Gigognan's Clos du Roi that's consistent from vintage to vintage. A full-bodied blend of Grenache (70%), Mourvédre (20%) and Syrah (10%), it's packed with layers of succulent blackberry, cherry and plum flavors, edged by a stony, salty minerality. *Editors' Choice* (AI)" (11/2022) 93 points Wine Spectator: "A meaty wine, with converging flavors of earth, tar, violet and fruit, plus cranberry and cassis note...

93 points Whisky Advocate: "The first thing you notice is the elegant fragrance of lychee, spring blossoms, lily, rosewater, and raspberry meringue. Deeper in, grassy notes with star fruit, kumquat, and kaffir lime leaves. The flavors offer perfection in their simplicity: silky honey, soft spices, crystalized pineapple, barley sugar, lemon, and orange. On the finish, the spices chatter on and on as the sweet citrus and honey fade in and out. One to cherish. (01/2024) K&L Notes: This 100% estate grown, Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs is made entirely with old Chardonnay selections from Mesnil, Cramant, and Oger. The palate is rounded, with fruit up front and through the mid-palate, and it has a silky and fresh lift. There is a wonderful ease and drinkability to this wine, which delivers balance and finesse. The Veuve Clemence gets four years of aging on the lees to the Reserve's three, and comes from older vineyards. They are both entirely estate-grown, Grand Cru Chardonnay. Before now, this cuvée was only available for the French market, but because of our great relationship with Launois, we were able to convince them to sell us a little. If you like it, don't hesitate - they may not have more for us the next time I order. While the wine certainly has mid-palate power, it is a dry, serious Champagne that loves to be paired with shellfish and is a wonder wi...
This 2010 Gran Reserva from our favorite Rioja winery is back in stock! As is the case with so many other great spots in Spain, Bodega Casa Juan is located opposite the village church, in the beautiful walled pueblo of Laguardia. The winery is a converted flour mill, featuring concrete tanks for fermenting and blending the wine, and barrels that are used for up to seven years. These are traditional Riojas in elaboration and spirit, though the site specificity of their Laguardia and Villabuena vineyards confers a fruit character all its own to these wines...

The Quartz comes from the famous Les Chétillons parcel in Le Mesnil sur Oger and has four atmospheres (59 psi) of pressure instead of the normal six (88 psi). While I would be hard pressed to tell by looking at or tasting this Champagne that it has lighter carbonation, it tastes very different from the Reserve due to the wonderful vineyard site. Since less yeast and sugar were added to the wine during bottling, it has less leesy flavor, and because there is less dissolved carbon dioxide in the wine the flavors of the grapes underneath shine more. Look fo...

This whisky shouldn't exist. We had to double check all the numbers multiple times before we considered selling this impeccable cask at this ridiculous price. If you've been paying attention, Ben Nevis has gotten hard to find. They cut off sales to independent bottlers and the few who had stock took ridiculous increases in price over the last few years. We had some good luck with these young Nevi from Signatory and were perfectly excited to sell a younger one two seasons back at more than double the price. So when our suppliers came to us with this incre...

This single-walled vineyard is the top of the line from Fallet-Dart. Although not labeled as a vintage, it is 100% 2006 and composed of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir that is barrel fermented. It is aged for over 12 years on the lees before release. The word "tirage" in French, which appears on the back label, means "bottling", and this all 2006 champagne was bottled in fall of 2007 and has spent an incredible 12 plus years on the lees. Don't let the name change fool you, this is the same great Champagne that used to be called "Carte Blanche". The Ariston Aspasie reserve is made of 40% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, and 30% Meunier. A balanced cuvée in every way, this Champagne is clean and powerful at once. It has a natural toasty quality from spending five full years on the lees, and plenty of refreshing zip from the far northern location of the vineyards. No bottle in our inventory transports me to Champagne like this one. It is as true to the terroir and as pure as anything I could wis...

Mas Codina is a 40-hectare estate in Alt Penedès which dates back to 1681. This Gran Reserva Cava was hand-harvested from 25- to 40-year-old vines and estate-bottled. Vines are planted in calcareous and sandy clay soils which keep the wine minerally and lively. Varietals include Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. 100% hand-riddled, it has spent over 30 months on its lees and is bottled with no dosage.

Elisabeth Goutorbe and her husband Jean-Marie Egrot run their tiny production Champagne house almost entirely by themselves. They get very little help from their cat Maurice, but can rely on Elisabeth’s father, René Goutorbe of Champagne Henri Goutorbe for a little bit of help. Of the 15 acres they own in Ay, Louvois, Tauxieres and Mutigny, they only keep the fruit from their 2.5 best—mostly in Ay, but also a touch of Louvois Chardonnay for balance. Their home straddles the border of Ay and Mutigny, two great terroirs in the Gand Valley of the Marne, whi...

The nose sings of preserved Morello cherries, mulberries, fruitcake and Chinese five spice with touches of potpourri, black pepper and licorice. Full-bodied, rich and decadently fruited, the palate provides a solid structure of firm, velvety tannins and tons of freshness to lift all that opulent fruit to a very long, spicy finish. This Champagne used to be called Elisabeth Goutorbe Cuvée Éclatante. Elisabeth changed the name over to her married name Egrot when she and her husband moved out of her parents' facility in Aÿ, and into their own. It is a 100% estate-grown, direct-import gem. It is a blend of two thirds Pinot Noir and one third Chardonnay, mostly from the grand crus of Ay and Louvois and including some from the premier crus of Tauxieres and Mutigny. Dosage is a little under 8 grams per liter. This wine has the silky texture and tiny streamers that only patience brings. ...

For decades now, our Kalinda private label has been providing K&L customers with awesome wines at a fraction of what they'd normally pay under the producers' mainstay labels. Naturally, no producer wants their wines on the market for less than what they'd usually sell for, so the trade-off is anonymity. This is a superb Cabernet-very elegant and user friendly already. Lots of sweet cassis and red fruit aromas that follow to the palate. No hard edges here-drink it young with a prime rib or steak dinner. Will cellar well for five plus years. clyde
96 points Decanter: "Pommard, Wadenswil (50%) and a bit of Dijon, the youngest vines on the Maresh estate, are from 1997, as well as plantings from 1991, 83, and 70, all of it own-rooted. Earth and rose petals announce gorgeous aromatics. Winemaker Jim Maresh destems 100%. It sees 18-24 months in barrel. At $33.50, this may be the best deal in American wine. 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine has a highly approachable layer of Bosc pear on the nose, but it’s the Golden Delicious apple and nectarine blossom underlay that are most alluring. White chalk jumps rope with playful acidity on the palate that craves panko-crusted chicken and moules-frites. (RS)" (12/2024) K&L Notes: The wines of Aurore Dezat are a regular feature in our wine club offerings, and her vibrant Sancerre is an easy favorite among K&L staff as well. In the part of Champagne known most for Pinot Noir, there is a magical place called La Perle Blanche de la Montagne de Reims, the east-facing slope of this small but prominent hill. The first village of this sub-region is the Premier Cru of Trépail, where the Petiau family tends to a small but exceptional vineyard. In the past, this family ran the nursery for the surrounding area, and like many of the best producers in Champagne, they have continued to nurture their own massal selection of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, choosing not to use the earlier ripeni...

The wonderful Glengoyne distillery is always one to keep an eye. Built in 1833, it was sold by Archiball Macllelan to the Lang Brothers where it remained until 1965 when it was purchased by a predecessor organization to Edrington Group. In 2003, it was sold to blenders and bottlers Ian Macleod and they've rightfully made Glengoyne a worldwide brand. They're famous for their sherried malt and it's rare to see a butt make it out of their warehouses under anyone else's label. A pale yellow wine with tiny bubbles, this Crémant de Loire Brut is rounded and delicate with a fine, nervy, complex nose and the freshness of Chenin Blanc, floral Chardonnay, and fruity Cabernet Franc from 20- to 30-year-old vines. This Champagne comes from one plot of 70-year-old Chardonnay vines in the Montagne of Reims village of Trepail. It is aged for three years on the lees. The Champagne has a chalky, creamy, bread bakery-esque nose, and a concentrated impression on the palate. As one would expect from such ancient vines, it delivers the goods on the finish with plenty of chalk as well as a bit of honey and white fruit. This makes a perfect aperitif, but will also pair well with seafood such as seared scallops or even raw oysters. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

Xavier Vignon's greatest strength as a winemaker is his ability to establish long lasting and unique relationships with his partner winemakers and growers. For more than a few years, Vignon has made exciting and sumptuous modern wines but he has also indulged in a few unique and interesting projects along the way. One such project is what we call the vintage series. From those long-standing relationships, Xavier finds parcels of vintage wine from domaines that have been sitting on juice in both barrel and tank for extended periods of time. Sometimes d...

Alexandre Le Brun is the smallest producer that we import (or even carry) from Champagne at just 7.5 acres. He only makes wine from half of the grapes he brings in, selling the rest off to negociants; his production totals just one thousand cases a year. This tiny scale allows Alex to do nearly everything himself and this hands-on approach shows through in the finished product. He only uses his own estate fruit for his Champagne, and this wine comes from just two rows in the grand cru of Chouilly, in a plot called La Derriere du Mont Aigu. This is electr...

The Launois "Oeil de Perdrix" Brut Champagne is a blanc de noir of Pinot Noir comes from the Chantmerle vineyard in the village of Sézanne proper and is fermented entirely in enamel lined steel tanks. The name means “partridges’ eye” and refers to the very short maceration the juice gets with the skins, giving it a blush that is more golden than pink. The bouquet reminds me of a great panettone; not only does it have buttery bread aromas, but also dried red fruits and roasted nuts. In the mouth it is round and trop facile à boire, too easy to drink but t...
