The wonderful Glengoyne distillery is always one to keep an eye. Built in 1833, it was sold by Archiball Macllelan to the Lang Brothers where it remained until 1965 when it was purchased by a predecessor organization to Edrington Group. In 2003, it was sold to blenders and bottlers Ian Macleod and they've rightfully made Glengoyne a worldwide brand. They're famous for their sherried malt and it's rare to see a butt make it out of their warehouses under anyone else's label. That's why we were so excited to see this pop up and when we tasted it we knew we ...

Here is your dark sherry bomb for the season! While it's not coffee dark, it's a gorgeous auburn/polished mahogany color. The simply lovely hue is a hint at the stupendous malt inside the bottle. The wonderful Dailuaine Distillery is finally garnering some notoriety with aficionados and the wider populace in general. It's taken many years to pull this lesser-known distillery out of obscurity and put it on the pedestal it deserves. Now that it's finally getting the recognition it deserves, maybe we wish we could hide it once again. This is officially the ...

The wonderful Craigellachie distillery is beginning to become more of a household name now that the owners have made an earnest attempt to market the malt under its own name. The funky little distillery outside of the eponymous named village is on the hillside directly across from Easter Elchies the famous estate where Macallan is built. The much more humble Craigellachie proudly displays the John Dewars name in large letters on the front of the distillery building. Craigellachie has been a regular on our shelves for many years offering complex malts of ...

Old Potrero is a true pioneer of modern whiskey. 100% malted rye pot distilled single malt - being made in San Francisco starting in 1993. Bruce Joseph has been making the whiskies (and their other fun products) since day one and is still the master distiller today. This 17 year old cask strength bottling was aged for 24 month air dried fine grain new American oak - and it is a beast.

2005 Undisclosed Jamaica 17 Year Old "Golden Devil" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Jamaican Rum (700ml)
This phenomenal barrel of rum will forever be a mystery. Wild speculation exists about its source and the bottler has absolutely zero information from the source about its marque. Those circumstances are highly unusual considering the quality and character of the rum in question. But, if you notice similar batches out there, there are only a handful of distillers that could supply this rum. Worthy Park, we've had others from the vintage and they have always included the blenders marque. The distillery was only selling in bulk at the time and their stocks...

The Old Malt Cask line of single cask single malts was created by the Laing brothers in 1998. They've since bottled countless legendary single malt and continue to surprise and delight connoisseurs with their diverse range of exceptionally selected single casks. Unlike K&L's Exclusive single casks, Old Malt Cask is traditionally bottled at 100 proof, but always without chillfiltration or coloring of any kind. The Laings selected a diverse range of malts to celebrate 25 years in the single cask business, picking out choice casks and bottling them in the g...

The beauty of the Thompson Brothers is that they're willing to take risks. This offering is indeed a risky proposition for a bottler, the very reason the big guys were willing to let it go. On paper it reads like a very expensive blended scotch. But why add an age statement, when a 12-year-old Johnnie Walker is a fraction of the price? The age statement tells the entire story here and our friends at Dornoch care little for artificial labels and quality statements, all they care about is getting damn good whisky into your glass for an incredible price. So...

Just when you think you've tasted every type of booze known to man, you discover that there are more regionally specific spirits being distilled in places you've never considered. Take Bolivia, where they make a pisco-like spirit called Singani, distilled from Muscat of Alexandria grapes grown high in the Andes mountains. Muscat is an aromatic varietal, known for its fruity and floral character, and the Singani spirit takes on many of the perfumes found in the expressive grape. The result is a clean and vibrant brandy that drinks like something in betwee...

This stupendous little Arran is a first for us, peated single barrel Arran! The young distillery was founded in 1995 on the sparsely populated island of Arran that was once a hot bed of illicit malt production. At one time there were upwards of 50 distillers operating in the area. Situated in the tiny town of Lochranza, the peated expression from the Island distiller has always been rare, but going forward stocks will be incredibly limited as they've moved production of peated malt to the second distillery on the island, Lagg. Owned by Isle of Arran dist...

Old grain is becoming extremely rare and difficult to source. Where we once had unlimited access, we've been takenaback by how expensive even lesser grain has become. But quality single grain has also found an audience and this awesome Invergordon will be stupendous news for those already initiated and an enticing invitiation to those who are not. The Invergordon Distillery was founded relatively late in the Scotch game by famed blenders Whyte & Mackay. Built in 1959, it boasts 3 coffey style column stills and a massive capacity 36 million liters of alco...

This espadin (A. Angustifolia) mezcal is the perfect pick for anyone starting to explore the world of quality mezcal or as a relatively inexpensive option for mezcal-based cocktails. It's very approachable and laden with sweet agave fruit. The smoke component is decidedly there, but not very intense, as one would expect with a well-made mezcal. A rich texture makes this a delightful sipper or stout component in a mezcal variant of the Last Word. Gold medal winner in Tequila Aficionado's 2021 Brands of Promise.

This lovely Tormore will certainly be the last thing most people consider, but for the lucky ones who take the plunge, it will be undoubtedly be the sleeper of the whisky season. The gorgeoous distillery is such a welcome site after hours on the A95 working your up the River Spey. The striking copper roof and stone balconies makes it one of Scotland's most attractive. It is infact one of Scotland's youngest single malt distillery, the first new distillery built in the 20th century, designed by Alexander Cullen for Long John Ltd, founders of Ben Nevis dis...

This is the Thompson Brothers foray into the world of blending. It's also proof that they've got some of the absolute best palates in the business. They seem to be getting access to stocks were others struggle and this little vatting of over 8 year old malts is one of the most intriguing and delicious malts on our shelves at any price point. SRV5 refers to Station Road Vat 5, the wooden vessel where this whisky is mingled before bottling. The Dornoch boys bottle in very small batches and the source material is of the highest quality. Here's a fabulous follow-up to the exceptionally good 25-year-old unpeated Ardmore that we featured in last year's Whisky Season. This much for typical Ardmore was peated to the usual medium level of around 14 ppm. Of course, this is using highland peat sourced from terrestrial vegetation rather than the Islay peat which is composed of ocean vegetation. Filled into a high-quality 2nd fill ex-bourbon barrel in July of 2009, it was bottled at cask strength of 57% abv without the use of coloring or chillfiltration. The resulting whisky is extremely expressi...

Domaine du Cardinat has been in the Lalanne family for over a century. Farmer and grandfather of the current proprietor, Patricia Singh, built the family home at the domaine 100 years ago and cultivated the land long before that. In 1935, Joseph Lalanne's sudden death thrust Patricia's father, Camille into the fields forcing him to leave school and commit his life to the family domaine. Just four years later, Camille planted the first vines at the domaine and his life was devoted to this patient passion. There he worked tirelessly to produce great brandy...

A good nicely aged Mortlach is something we wish we could offer more readily. Make it stupidly drinkable and at an unbelievably generous price, and we’ll drop nearly everything else. This attractive little refill hogshead is a dreamy, offering malt driven style from the Beast of Dufftown. You can visit a bona fide Fairy Village in Dufftown these days or the famous Giant's Chair, but the wonderful distillery in the gully by the stream to the south of town is arguably the town's most magical spot. The Mortlach makes an extremely unique malt. The distillati...

The Yamazaki Distillery doesn't release new products very often and when the Distiller's Reserve was release in Japan way back in 2014, we were excited to have a new Yamazaki to sell. It only took about a decade or so for them to release the product stateside and while critics hemmed and hawed about the lack of age statements, the public has embraced this release with gusto. Turns out there are some pretty incredible old whiskies in the blend, and it easily competes with the more expensive 12-year-old in the glass and many will even prefer the richer rob...

Ledaig Single Malt is a cherished gem from the Hebridean Isles and comes from one of the oldest distilleries in all of Scotland. Produced on again, off again since its founding in 1798, and licensed since 1823, the Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull is known primarily for its two single malt marks. Tobermory, an unpeated dram and Ledaig, with its heavily peated characteristics. Both are widely regarded as malts of outstanding quality. Both malts owe their rich character to the unusual stills that lie at the heart of the distillery - bulbous stills ...

Fritz Maytag, the visionary who ushered in the craft beer movement, is also responsible for a resurrection of pot distilled whiskey in America. Not satisfied with merely rescuing Anchor Brewing in 1965 and resuscitating its iconic steam beer, he expanded to spirits in 1993. Fritz established Anchor Distilling Company in the back of the beer brewery and propelled the return of pot-distilled whiskey to the United States. Inspired by the rye whiskeys being made at America’s founding and Scotland's finest single malts the San Francisco distillery on Potrero ...

97 points Vinous: "It’s unique to taste an XO that’s aged 25 years, made from a significant amount of Folle Blanche grape in the blend, and bottled at cask strength -- or brut de fût as the French say. Complex yet seamless. Summer-garden aromas of orange and honeysuckle lead to a deep, intense experience on the palate, a thrilling balance of fruit and minerality, and a long, dry finish. Bas-Armagnac, 42.4% abv. (JW)" (07/2018) K&L Notes: Here's a 25-year-old Armagnac from a legendary house for less than $90. Oh, did we mention that it's also cask stren...

The artisanl mezcal distilled by Fernando Santibanez in Matatlan. Made from 100% Espadin, the agave is crushed and roasted in the traditional method using mesquite and ocote wood. Natural fermentation takes place in pine vats before double distillation in very old copper pots. This is awesome authentic mezcal, selling for well below the market rate. Originally a mysterious oddity only known to the hardest of the hardcore Kentucky bourbon fanatics, Black Maple Hill rode the popularity explosion in craft whiskey to its demise—almost. As the boom peaked, along with BMH's prices, the supply of their confidential, age-stated whiskeys essentially dried up and Black Maple Hill exited the market, it seemed. Undaunted, the brand's owner sought far and wide for new supply, and he found his diamond in the rugged and rough high plains of northeastern Oregon—the Steins family farm and distillery. Originally a gr...

Jason Wilson of Vinous writes: "Describing itself as 'artisan—négociant—éleveur,' Baron de Lustrac works with about 20 small producers, focused on single-cask, single-vineyard, and often single-variety. José Barbe, who started the brand in 1994 with his partner Ina Bornemann, scours Armagnac to procure special barrels. In fact, some of Baron de Lustrac’s domaines may only produce a single barrel per year, and none produce more than 15. All of the Armagnacs are aged on the properties where they are produced, and like Darroze, the name of the original doma...

Whisky Advocate: "Fragrant and herbal aromas, with pine needles, basil, green bell pepper, pea pod, black truffle, peppercorn, and smoke from smoldering dry mosses and wood shavings. It’s very smooth and refreshing, with pear, peppermint, lemon, lime, green tea, kiwi, and herbal notes, finishing with chopped mint, more herbal layers, and gentle peppery spice. A rare independently bottled Aberlour, made that much more unusual by its maturation in a first fill sherry butt. The Aberlour distillery sits on the edge of its namesake, a gorgeous little hamlet right at the center of the Speyside region. The distillery seems tiny from the outside, but the malt here packs a punch. Founded in 1879 by James Fleming, it's become a pillar of the Chivas family in the last two decades since the French spirits giant Pernod Ricard purchased the distillery. Outfitted with 4 stills in the early 70s, it can produce nearly 4 milli...

Wine Enthusiast: "Although the “Botanist” name might suggest a floral gin, instead the flavor profile veers toward herbs and spices. There’s a subtle, herbal scent, with anise flavors up front, backed by coriander seed and cassia bark on the spicy finish. Gin Mare is a product we discovered in Scotland, of all places, years ago while searching for single malt. The retailer across the street from our hotel in Edinburgh was featuring the gin in a tasting that evening and we went over to check it out. Distilled in Spain with olives, rosemary, basil, and thyme, it's a savory and truly Mediterranean experience. The herbs never overpower the palate, however, as the balance between them is quite delicate and refined. It's definitely an ideal choice for martinis, paired with olives, of course.

The exceptional Ford's Gin is one of the most versatile London Drys on the market. Distilled at the exceptional Thames Distillery by master distiller Charles Maxwell and the famous Simon Ford. They start with a base of Italian juniper and coriander seed, and the recipe is expanded thoughtfully to include bitter oranges, lemon and grapefruit peel. Subtle jasmine and orris add a soft floral quality, while spicy angelica root and cassia bark give it some structure. I've always noted a smidge of cucumber, but the distiller won't cop to it. Anyway, the mixtur...
