95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "As to the red, rocking levels of kirsch, black raspberries, toasted spices, and garrigue emerge from the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It's full-bodied, concentrated, pure and elegant, with sweet tannin, and an opulent, flamboyant style. Based largely on Grenache, with smaller amounts of Syrah and Mourvèdre, it has fine tannin, impeccable balance, and a great finish. Along with the 2010, it’s the finest wine to date from this estate." (08/2018) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I appear to have underestimated the 2016 Châtea...

2016 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe (1.5L)
Top Pick!
100 points James Suckling: "This is muscular yet so well defined and toned. Full-bodied with deep and dense fruit on the palate, yet powerful and rich at the same time. So much sandalwood and blackberry character. Chewy and rich at the finish. This is a warm and generous wine, but the alcohol is just over 13 degrees. Not that high. Love the finish. Extravagant. Magical. Try from 2025." (02/2019) 100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Cos d'Estournel is blended of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc aged in 65% new and ...

2007 Malescasse, Haut-Médoc (1.5L)
Top Pick!
Château Malescasse is a historic property ideally situated on gravel soils close to the Gironde River just north of Margaux. While it is true that 2007 will never have the power or authority of the finest vintages of the decade, the best wines display a remarkable ripeness and an admirable richness of texture. These are medium to full-bodied reds with soft tannins that will make great near to medium-term drinking. They are priced appropriately and many, like this 2007 Malescasse, offer exceptional value.

Silver Oak was founded to focus on Cabernet Sauvignon in 1972 by entrepreneur Raymond Twomey Duncan and winemaker Justin Meyer, and makes two key wines based on their respective AVAs. The 2016 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with a combined 5% of the other Bordeaux varietals and was aged in American oak (50% new) from Silver Oak's own cooperage. A classic nose of cassis and bramble fruits along with vanilla, sage, and mint reverberate on the palate with a pop of red berry fruit. Graphite mineral and dusty tannins grace a medium-plus finish...

Wine Enthusiast: "This property of the Pagès family has given us an attractively fruity wine. Tannins are still young and the black-currant fruit is still fresh and juicy. This half-and-half blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon will develop well, ready from 2023. *Best Buy* (RV)" (04/2021)

98 points Vinous: "Castellare's I Sodi di San Niccolò is the single most overlooked high-end wine in Tuscany today. The 2016 picks up where the 2015 left off. A rush of inky dark fruit, lavender, spice, licorice, gravel, blueberry and menthol builds as the 2016 shows off its exceptional balance and pedigree. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2016 needs a few years in bottle to fully come together. Even so, the 2016 has been nothing less than spectacular on the two occasions I have tasted it so far. In a word: monumental. (AG)" (09/2020) 96 points...

1997 Fourcas Dupre, Listrac (1.5L)
Top Pick!
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An attractive wine with plenty of black currant fruit, this 1997 provides a ripe entry on the palate, good purity, medium body, and nice length. (RP)" (04/1998)
Price: $44.99

91 points James Suckling: "A linear, chewy red with pretty, creamy tannins and delicious berry, walnut and cedar character. It’s medium-to full-bodied with tight tannins and a medium finish. Give it two or three years to come together." (01/2021) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "The structured Cabernet Sauvignon in this ripe wine gives attractive black-currant flavors and a core of tannins that will allow it to age. It is a great food wine: fruity, structured and sure to age well. (RV) " (04/2021) 90 points Decanter: "Attractive, touches of savoury fruit...

2016 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac (1.5L)
Top Pick!
100 points Wine Enthusiast: "A voluptuous wine, this is rich and fruity yet properly balanced by a magnificent structure. Pure, crisp and packed with a black currant flavor, this will be a remarkable wine as it develops. Still young, it needs many years to develop. *Ranked #2 Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2019* (RV)" (05/2019) 99 points Vinous: "The 2016 Pontet-Canet is absolutely breathtaking. Powerful, ample and racy in the glass, the 2016 is one of the most exquisitely well-balanced young Pontet-Canets I can remember tasting. Savory, ...

2017 Spottswoode "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)
Top Pick!
97 points International Wine Review: "The 2017 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is absolutely fantastic, and one of the highlights of the entire vintage. 2017 presented its challenges, with hail, hot summer temperatures and wildfire, but Spottswoode was able to complete harvest before the fires began and they had no impact on the wines. The wine itself is composed of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 4% Merlot which spent 20 months in French oak (60% new). The result is a seductive wine that displays a wonderful combination of elegance a...

This is one of those wines that people will be buying by the case all summer long. Why? Well, with its new-world ripeness of red plum, black raspberry and licorice ropes this is totally crowd pleasing.
Price: $39.99

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Darker aromas and flavors than the ’95. There is a slight menthol coolness to the cassis flavors; tobacco and cedar accents are strong. The mouthfeel is big and structured. The finish is long, with lots of flavor and broad tannins. A keeper. Hold for four to eight years." (05/2000) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Very good red-ruby color. Wilder, somewhat rustic aromas of roasted plum and leather. Fat but vinous, with a strong leathery flavor. Rustic but rather full for this wine, and lush on the back end. No sh...

96-100 points Wine Enthusiast: "The opening aroma is marvelously beany and grassy; later, sweetish flavors of dark caramel, chimney soot, and dark, old honey make scrumptious inhaling. The palate entry is honeyed, warm, and cocoa-like; at midpalate the grassy, weedy, cane-like taste balances the honeyed sweetness. Concludes cocoa-like, intense yet smooth, and memorably sweet. *Best Buy*" (06/2006)

90 points James Suckling: "The aromas of walnut shell, chocolate and berries are all there. Full body with soft, velvety tannins and a fruity finish." (07/2013) 90 points Wine & Spirits: "Delicate florals surround the firm red berry flavors of this wine. The tannins are gravelly and the fruit is fresh, lingering with a gentle persistence and adding silkiness. This should be ready to enjoy around six years from the vintage." (10/2008) Wine Spectator: "Lots of smoky wood, with currant and spice that follow through to a medium-to-full body, with medium ...

99 points Vinous: "The 2018 La Gaffelière is hands down one of the wines of the vintage. Towering in its stature and vertical lift, the 2018 dazzles right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, mocha, spice, licorice and leather all run through this deep, wonderfully pliant Saint-Émilion. The 2018 is rich, deep and beautifully resonant, with tremendous depth and tons of stature that builds, all framed by beams of supporting minerality that confer vibrancy. La Gaffelière is distinctive, alluring and arresting right out of the gate. It is another magnificent sh...

2016 Caymus "Special Selection" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)
Top Pick!
95 points Wine Spectator: "This asserts itself through flattery right from the start, with a gush of warmed cassis, açaí berry reduction and plum preserves laced liberally with mocha-accented toast and carried by very plush structure. This is weighty and brimming with fruit, while the toast takes a lengthy encore on the finish. A hedonist's dream. (JM)" (07/2021) K&L Notes: The Caymus "Special Selection" is the pride of the Wagner family. It's their flagship wine, is composed from the very best barrels of the vintage, and is not produced in years where...

95 points Connoisseurs Guide: "In the very first Issue of Connoisseurs’ Guide, back in November, 1974, Ridge Geyserville was among the most highly praised wines. And, now four decades and five years later, the very same wine sits at the top of the ratings table. But there is an interesting difference. This wine is among the most mannerly Geyservilles ever. Yes, it is its usually deep and complex self with ripe berries both black and blue profoundly expressed all joined with the richness and flavor length that has been prominent in the very best vintages....

2020 Château de Pibarnon Bandol Rosé (1.5L)
New!
Chateau de Pibarnon is an extraordinary terroir seated some 300 meters above the village of Cadière d'Azur in a natural amphitheater. The soil is high in calcair (limestone) and loaded with microfossils making it distinctively unique from its neighbors. The magic of this site provides a balance of warmth in the day and cooling nights. Mourvedre, the primary grape of the region, is said to "need its feet in the water and its head in the sun." Just a few hundred meters from the Mediterranean and with a sunny exposition, Pibarnon's vineyards couldn't be...

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 La Conseillante is composed of 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc, with a 3.65 pH and 14% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs a lot of swirling and coaxing to lure out the youthfully shy, incredible perfume of black raspberries, boysenberries, ripe plums and cinnamon toast, leading to notions of lilacs, clove oil and forest floor, plus a waft of iron ore. The medium to full-bodied palate is a jaw-dropping exercise in finesse, slowly unfurling in the mouth to reveal layer upon layer of bright, cr...

This wine comes from vineyards located directly between Cheval Blanc and Figeac. Excellent and consistent winemaking has been the hallmark of La Tour-Figeac.

96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Editors’ Choice :Balsamic aromas of camphor and cedar align with ripe plum, underbrush and new leather on this full-bodied red. On the concentrated, enveloping palate, tightly-knit, fine-grained tannins accompany ripe Marasca cherry, blood orange, vanilla and licorice before a tobacco close. Fresh acidity lifts the dense richness. Drink 2024-2036. K.O. " (07/2021)

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "From a 28.5-hectare vineyard overlooking the Gironde River on the northern side of Saint-Estephe, the 2016 Château Charmail is one of those hidden gems in the vintage that should be snatched up by readers. It’s a medium to full-bodied, elegant, classic wine that offers lots of darker fruits (cassis and blackberry), spice, new saddle leather, and leafy herbs as well as a kiss of damp earth. It has terrific balance and is going to keep for 15-20 years. The blend is 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and the rest...

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The delicate perfume is softly grainy, with nuances of white pepper, wheat crackers and cigarette tobacco. The palate entry is elegant yet a touch hot; at midpalate the dry flavor turns silky in texture and minerally and stone-like in taste. Concludes bean- and kernel-like, bittersweet and a touch soy curd-like. A subtle, understated vodka with lots of layers and grip. " (06/2006) K&L Notes: The same incredible vodka as Jewel of Russia Ultra without the expensive, hand-painted bottle. Possibly the best vodka available at ...

91 points Decanter: "Second vintage with Penelope Godefroy, and at the start of the organic conversion. This is lovely, already accessible with its dark brambly fruits and soft tannins. The emphasis here is definitely on pleasure, and it's extremely tasty as a result. Drinking Window 2018 - 2030 (JA)" (09/2017) 90 points James Suckling: " Blackcurrants and leaves, as well as violets. The palate has silky yet dense and smooth tannins wrapped in dark-plum flavors. Drink or hold. " (02/2018) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Features a tasty core of steeped pl...

98 points Vinous: "The 2017 Dominus is one of the truly epic, grand wines of the vintage. Rich, dense and explosive, with tremendous concentration and sheer power, the 2017 Dominus captures all the personality of this site along with the natural opulence of the year. Inky dark fruit, lavender, menthol, licorice, plum, gravel and a host of dark spice notes infuse the 2017 with seemingly endless layers of nuance. Over the last two years I have tasted several hundred Napa Valley Cabernets, both from barrel and bottle. There is no question that Dominus belon...

We met Marie Chauffray at the Vinifilles tasting in January of 2015 in Montpellier. The Vinifilles (which means "wine girls") is an association of women producers who own and operate their own estates. From growing to winemaking to marketing, they are involved in every aspect of their wineries' successes. I was invited by our friend Francoise Antech-Gazeau (our sparkling wine producer from the Limoux) to visit and taste her wines and meet some of her other grower-producer friends. Chauffray's was one of the most impressive wines we tasted at the event, a...
