2019 Denman Ranch "Van der Kamp Vineyard" Sonoma Mountain Pinot Noir (Elsewhere $65) (Elsewhere $65)
Top Pick!
What do you get when you take the ex-Cellarmaster of Littorai, plus the Assistant Winemaker from Flowers, plus a free rein and ample funding to make the very best wines you can for a new winery...then a global pandemic comes along? The answer is phenomenal wines, from top quality, iconic vineyards, at ridiculously sharp pricing. These wines came onto my radar as a tip from a good friend on the winemaking team at Rhys Vineyards. Another winemaking friend of his had a parcel of wines from a startup project that had "changed direction" in the face of the Co...

2019 Moulin de la Gardette "Tradition" Gigondas
Top Pick!
95 points Decanter: "Somewhat introverted initially, some spicy black fruits take some coaxing out and then violets emerge with air too. There’s a satisfying weight and presence without feeling heavy or extracted, with a clear mineral seam running through the palate. The tannins are very fine and there’s a good sense of intensity and purity, with well balanced, deep-set acidity holding the wine upright. Long finish. Overall a very well-proportioned wine that gives great pleasure now, and will continue to do so for some time. (MW)" (07/2021) Jancis Robi...

2019 Domaine Vacheron Sancerre
Top Pick!
93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Sancerre opens with a clear and highly attractive ripe peach aroma with coolish flint stone notes. Full-bodied and intense, with lingering salinity and sustainable structure, this is an already accessible Sancerre with a long and grippy finish. (SR)" (03/2021) 92 points Vinous: "Vacheron's 2019 Sancerre Blanc is classy, polished and pedigreed through and through. A whole range of bright Sauvignon Blanc aromas and flavors race out of the glass. Citrus, sage, tomato leaf and white pepper all grace this t...

2019 Kalinda Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Top Pick!
This wine comes from one of the more renowned Cabernet Sauvignon producers in Napa Valley. Really! But, we offer this beauty at a price much lower than what you’d pay at the winery, as for decades now, our Kalinda private label has been providing K&L customers with awesome wines at a fraction of what they'd normally pay under the producers' mainstay labels. Naturally, no producer wants their wines on the market for less than what they'd usually sell for, so the trade-off is anonymity.

2019 Ridge Vineyards "East Bench" Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel
Top Pick!
95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Based on 100% Zinfandel, the 2019 Zinfandel East Bench has a great perfume of red plums, wild strawberries, and flowery incense, with just hints of cigar and dried orange peel emerging with time in the glass. While it's not a blockbuster, it brings gorgeous intensity and richness in a medium-bodied, weightless, elegant package that delivers ripe tannins and notable acidity." (03/2021) 94 points James Suckling: "Fresh, almost Pinot-like sensibility with the mouth feel. A beautifully spread wine that fills the palate, but maintain...

2019 Les Terrasses Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Top Pick!
A medium-bodied, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault blend with plenty of typical Châteauneuf-du-Pape character. On the 2019 vintage that Jeb Dunnuck calls concentrated and classic, he notes: "Despite the hot growing season, the wines hold onto impressive aromatics, with clean, pure fruit aromas and little in the way of over-ripeness."

William Kelley writes for Wine Advocate: "Jean and Agnès Foillard's first vintage was in 1981, but it was in 1985 that Jean began to work differently, influenced by his neighbor, the late Marcel Lapierre. Lapierre followed négociant and microbiologist Jules Chauvet in rejecting selected yeasts and manipulative winemaking in favor of minimal effective sulfur dioxide and carbonic maceration at comparatively low temperatures. Today, Foillard remains true to that approach: His Morgon cuvées see some three weeks of maceration in tank before gentle pressing an...

88-91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A markedly cooler nose is quite fresh with airy aromas of dark raspberry, earth and a whiff of spice and in particular anise. The vibrant and chiseled middle weight flavors terminate in a linear, youthfully austere and compact finale. This always needs time to open and will require at least a few years of patience first." (01/2021) K&L Notes: Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "One part of the Bart holding comes from a cool, less easy to ripen site in the back of the combe, and in the past this would be declassified...

From K&L On The Trail blog: "Jean-Michel Giboulot took over the family business in 1982 and has put together one of the best bang-for-your-buck portfolios in all of Burgundy over the last three-plus decades. His wines from Burgundy's Savigny-lès-Beaune appellation are known as great values, and both the reds and whites are equally strong. Giboulot's wines straddle the line between traditional and modern, with reds that have crunchier fruit and fine tannins, but plenty of ripeness and purity. The whites are done in a feminine style with rounder fruit and ...

Sophie Guiraudon is the owner of Clos de l’Anhel, a sheepfold surrounded by ten hectares of vines in Languedoc’s ancient Corbières appellation (Anhel means “lamb” in the local Occitan dialect). She farms her 25 acres alone but finds community in Les Vinifilles (“Wine Girls”), a trade organization of women who support one another and celebrate the “culture of wine.” Most of her work is done by hand, from trimming and pruning to hoeing the soil. “Les Dimanches” incorporates fruit from Sophie’s best and oldest parcels, meant for special Sunday dinners with ...

You'll be glad you bought some of this. Not hugely deep or hugely complex, but beautifully balanced. (MW)" (10/2020) 92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Bottled just a month before this tasting, the 2019 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet De Beaucastel is showing brilliantly, with a rich, medium to full-bodied, textured style that displays the ripe, sexy style of the vintage. 2019 John Duval "Entity" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia
Top Pick!
94 points James Suckling: "A rich and powerful wine that is predominantly (89%) sourced from the Barossa Valley and 11% from the Eden Valley to season. Deeply colored, the very fruit-focused nose has ripe blackberries and dark plums with a subtle, cocoa-dust edge. The palate is generously fleshy and satisfying, with rich fruit driving the palate. Blackberry and dark-plum flavors." (JM, Web-2021)" 90-91 points James Suckling: "This is very ripe with dried apples, mangoes and pineapple. It’s full and lightly oily with lots of fruit." (04/2020) 88-90 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Mostly Sauvignon (there's 20% Semillon), the 2019 Château de France Blanc comes from the deep gravelly soils of the Graves region and offers attractive notes of ripe peach and orange blossom as ...

2019 Château Vitallis Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes
Top Pick!
There are still treasures to be found in the Mâcon, where small producers fly under the radar, and this includes Château Vitallis. In classic Burgundian fashion, the Dutron family has been growing vines since 1835, and now owns some of the oldest and best parcels in the village of Fuissé in the Pouilly-Fuissé district. Our buyers happened upon the château during a trip to Burgundy last October, and it was quite evident upon their return that they’d found something special. 2019 Malmont Côtes du Rhône-Villages Seguret
Top Pick!
Domaine de Cabasse was a highly regarded producer making wines from the Rhône villages of Sablet, Gigondas and Seguret. The family decided to sell their property in 2012 but there was one lone family member who didn't want to see it go. Scraping together enough money, Nicolas Haeni was able to buy just the Seguret vineyard and make that the focus of his new project, "Malmont." This remarkable site is very difficult to farm and the vineyard itself is named Malmont meaning "bad mountain." When it was developed as a site under Cabasse's ownership, they used...

95 points Wine Spectator: "This version is defined by a beam of vibrant acidity and tannins that’s framed by refined blueberry and cherry flavors, accented by stony minerality and dusky spiced tea. Drink now through 2031. (TF)" (10/2021)
Price: $34.95

88-90 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "All but imperceptible wood influence is present on the ripe yet slightly fresher aromas of mostly dark berries along with earthy and mildly sauvage hints. There is slightly better underlying tension to the rich and sleek flavors that possess both good minerality and detail on the lingering and well-balanced finish that is both firmer yet finer. In contrast to the first two wines, this will need at least a few years of patience first." (01/2020) K&L Notes: 87-90 points Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Rich mid pur...

An elegant Nebbiolo-based blend from a small estate in Piemonte. Young vines, no oak, just a deliciously drinkable Italian red to accompany a steamy plate of pasta — or roast chicken, as K&L's Italian wine buyer, Greg St. Clair, would have it: "Over the past couple of decades, the region of Alto Piemonte has become a force, producing some of the most interesting Nebbiolo-based wines in Piedmont. Alto Piemonte? Yes! It means upper Piedmont, and it stretches from about 60 miles west of Milano to Gattinara, then west to Carema, about 35 miles north of Torin...

A new addition to the K&L inventory and to the Jura AOC as a whole, Patrick Ligeron's Domaine des Carlines is quickly making an impression not only on Jura geeks, but also on fans of terroir in general. 94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "More aromatic and exotic, the 2019 Crozes-Hermitage Roche Blanche ratchets up the intensity and offers a classic nose of quince, green almonds, brioche, and white flowers. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and wonderfully textured, it has a solid sense of freshness and purity as well as an almost Hermitage Blanc-like stature and depth. It should keep for a decade, although I would lean toward enjoying bottles over the coming 4-5 years." Coralie Onde is from the winemaking family behind Domaine les Ondines, but opted to start her own project independent of her family estate in 2008. She formed Domaine de la Ganse in Vacqueyras when she purchased some terrific old vine fruit, also taking a small holding when the family estate was split. With close to 9 hectares now, Coralie began the organic certification process and was officially certified in 2014. " (04/2021) K&L Notes: 90pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Bottled in March. Domaine des Remizières are 4th generation winemakers that originally sold grapes to the local cooperative. After completing their winery in 1974, the family began production at their new property. The estate is now managed by Phillipe Desmeures, his daughter Emilie, and son Christophe. They have expanded to 30 ha with vineyards in Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, and Hermitage. The Cuvée Christophe is a blend of 85% Marsanne and 15% Roussanne aged in a mix of new and used barrique. It captures the essence of rich, full-bodied whites from the region.

While Domaine Sylvain Langoureau may not be a household name, we anticipate it will become the go-to producer for those who enjoy artfully crafted wines that combine a pronounced citrus element with crisp acidity and a touch of minerality. This family-run estate does everything by hand, is committed to low yields, and focuses on conveying each site's distinctive terroir. Château de la Charrière is one of our most popular direct import producers and a label that easily represents the best bang for your buck we carry in Burgundy. Formerly run by Yves Girardin, the business is now run by his young son Benoit, who definitely has modernized the winemaking a bit since his first vintage in 2011. Whereas the wines were a bit funky and rustic previously, the past few vintages are much cleaner, showcasing the pureness of the Pinot Noir by de-stemming completely so as to remove excess tannic structure.

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Pure, focused and vibrant fruit flavors at the core of this elegant, superbly balanced wine give it a rare vibrancy and power. 96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Moving to the reds, the 2019 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido reveals a deeper ruby, almost opaque hue as well as a killer bouquet of mulled red and black currants, briny herbs, pepper, and wildflowers. It picks up more salinity and crushed stone-like minerality with time in the glass and is medium to full-bodied and flawlessly balanced, with no hard edges and a great, great finish.
