2019 Domaine des Niales Rhedon-Marin Mâcon-Villages Vieilles Vignes
Top Pick!
This is a charming Chardonnay from a small grower in the Mâcon. Lionel Rhedon-Marin is a graduate of the College of Viticulture in the nearby village of Davaye, where Guffens trained. All of their young-vine fruit is sold in bulk to one of the better negociants, who is pleased to have it, since Lionel is such a careful grower. But their old-vine fruit, all over 45 years of age, is kept for the domaine wine, which is charming and elegant. This is a balanced, well-made and wonderfully crisp and mineral-driven Mâcon. Only K&L's direct import makes this pric...

2019 Denman Ranch "Fallenleaf Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Chardonnay (Elsewhere $55) (Elsewhere $55)
Top Pick!
What do you get when you take the ex-cellarmaster of Littorai, plus the assistant winemaker from Flowers, plus a free rein and ample funding to make the very best wines you can for a new winery...then a global pandemic comes along? The answer is phenomenal wines, from top quality, iconic vineyards, at ridiculously sharp pricing. These wines came onto my radar as a tip from a good friend on the winemaking team at Rhys Vineyards. Another winemaking friend of his had a parcel of wines from a startup project that had "changed direction" in the face of the Co...

2019 Kalinda Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
Top Pick!
This wine comes from one of the more renowned Pinot Noir producers in Northern California. Really! But, we offer this beauty at a price much lower than what you’d pay at the winery, as for decades now, our Kalinda private label has been providing K&L customers with awesome wines at a fraction of what they'd normally pay under the producers' mainstay labels. Naturally, no producer wants their wines on the market for less than what they'd usually sell for, so the trade-off is anonymity.

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "A vein of graphite runs from nose to finish in this fresh, juicy blend of Grenache (80%) and Syrah (20%). Blueberry and boysenberry flavors are lifted by tangs of salt and granite along with streaks of zesty cassis acidity. This snappy, thirst-quenching wine should drink well through 2025. (AI)" (10/2021) Wine Spectator: "Bright Bing cherry and damson plum fruit races along, lined with light floral and garrigue notes. The fresh, focused finish brings you back for another sip. (JM)" (08/2021) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: ...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This excellent wine offers aromas of blueberry, currant, terra cotta, iodine, savory spices and an umami-like seaweed nuance. There's lovely depth of flavor, tannin structure and regional expression on the palate. Drink through 2040." (04/2021) 93 points James Halliday: "Seriously. Look at the price. A ripper red punching way above its weight, although not a weighty drink at all. It's made to be enjoyed without cellaring, yet it has a lot of panache. A core of excellent fruit, floral and spicy, all gliding along the medium-b...

93 points Vinous: "The 2019 Sauvignon Blanc Sybarite opens with a rush of citrus, floral and tomato leaf aromatics that lead into beautifully sculpted orchard fruit flavors. Here, too, Doug Margerum balances vivacity with depth. (AG)" (08/2020) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Very light in the glass, this always reliable white wine starts with aromas of pear soda, red apple and slightly tropical white and green flowers. The texture is taut and dry, with brisk flavors of red apple, seashell, lemongrass and a fast-fading flash of guava. (MK)" (09/2020) 90...

The 18 hectares of vines on the Blason estate in Isonzo grow in alluvial limestone soil that is also high in iron content, hence its predominantly reddish color. The growing region is at the confluence of two climate systems, that of the foothills of the Julian Alps and the nearby Adriatic Sea. This allows for white wines of fully developed flavors and aromas, but which also retain a striking mineral edge. This Pinot Grigio is vinified with some skin contact, all in stainless steel.

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Most of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 20 hectares, which are north-facing and located at 600 meters in altitude, affording the visitor with one of the most dramatically beautiful views of Rioja's main mountain ranges: the Sierra Cantabria mountains immediately to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda mountains to the south. This white win...

2019 Poggiarellino Rosso di Montalcino
Top Pick!
Poggiarellino is a small property in the north of Montalcino and is not far from Altesino. They started making wine with the 1996 vintage and slowly grew their production. K&L started importing their wine with the 2000 vintage. Their Brunello di Montalcino production is usually about 450 cases to 500 cases and about half of that number for the Rosso di Montalcino. The Brunello is aged in 25hl Slavonian oak barrels and the Rosso di Montalcino is aged in stainless steel tanks.

2019 Château Vitallis Macon-Fuissé
Top Pick!
Founded by the Dutron family in 1835, Château Vitallis is run today by winemaker Dennis Dutron. It is an estate of about 40 acres, including 5 acres in Macon-Fuissé. From the importer: "The estate is known for its old vines, some of which are over 65 years old. The average age is 35 years. The vineyards are situated on Southeast facing slopes at an altitude of 750 to 900 feet in the villages of Fuissé and Solutre … They use traditional methods in the vineyards and and temperature-controlled cellar. Amats is both the brand name of the Txakoli as well as one of Zudugarai's vineyards. It's a beautiful vineyard, a sandy substrate covered in naturally growing green cover crops between the rows, with the Cantabrian Sea in full view to the north. Produced from Hondarribi Zuri grapes, this is classic Txakoli: zippy, crisp, tart green apple flavors are enlivened by a lovely sparkle from the CO2 retained in tank during fermentation.

(09/2020) 92 points Wine & Spirits: "A blend of fruit from high terraces cut into primary rock as well as loess-rich lower sites, this is a firm, svelte Riesling. Vinified spontaneously in stainless steel, it has a little yeasty richness to fill out its...

2019 Château de la Charrière Bourgogne Blanc
Top Pick!
Château de la Charrière is one of our most popular direct import producers and a label that easily represents the best bang for your buck we carry in Burgundy. Formerly run by Yves Girardin, the business is now run by his young son Benoit, who definitely has modernized the winemaking a bit since his first vintage in 2011. Whereas the wines were a bit funky and rustic previously, the past few vintages are much cleaner, showcasing the pureness of the Pinot Noir by de-stemming completely so as to remove excess tannic structure.

The palate is deeply fruited but light on its feet with bright freshness and loads of perfume on the long finish. An excellent value in Spanish white wine, the Verdeal Rueda shows just how versatile and appealing the Verdejo grape can be. Bright, fresh, elegant, and well structured. 2019 Domaine Roche Cairanne
Top Pick!
91-93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Cairanne is brilliant stuff, and I'd certainly be happy to drink a bottle. Lots of black raspberry and jammy blueberries as well as candied orange, flowers, and peppery herbs give way to a medium to full-bodied, rounded, sexy Cairanne with beautiful purity as well as length. It's going to drink nicely right out of the gate yet keep for 7-8 years." (03/2021) K&L Notes: Romain Roche took over the family property from his father Marcel in 2009. 2019 Domaine Roche "La Bousquette" Cairanne
Top Pick!
93-95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Cairanne La Bousquette also comes from older vines and is a mix of mostly Grenache with a splash of Carignan. This incredibly complex Cairanne is the most concentrated and backward in the lineup, revealing a deep purple hue as well as gorgeous nose of blackberries, peppery garrigue, new leather, and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, with a great mid-palate as well as ripe yet present tannins, it's going to benefit from a few years in the cellar and have a solid 10-15 years of overall longevity." It’s a medium-bodied, nicely textured, fruit-forward Chardonnay to enjoy in its youth." (01/2021) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Chardonnay Olema leaps from the glass with bold expressions of warm peaches, spiced pears and lemongrass plus hints of honeysuckle and marzipan. Medium-bodied, it has bags of lively stone fruit flavors in the mouth with a silken texture and a spicy finish. (LPB)" (11/2020)

91 points Vinous: "Vivid ruby-red. Aromas of ripe red and dark berries, spicecake and candied flowers are complemented by a smoky mineral nuance that builds in the glass. Sappy black raspberry and cherry flavors show good depth as well as energy. Silky and appealingly sweet, finishing with sharp focus and smooth tannins that fold into the wine’s juicy fruit. Raised in stainless steel and concrete tanks. (JR)" (02/2021) K&L Notes: Given the fresh, raspy mixed berry fruit, the name "Zestos" is indeed apt (though it actually is Spanish for "basket.") Give it two or three years to soften." (03/2021) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I was surprised by the varietal purity of the 2019 Cuvée Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon despite being blended with some 9% Carménère, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, which probably adds complexity and more Bordeaux character to the bottled wine. As Thackrey said of the red wine version, "The object of Pleiades Old Vines is to be delicious, delight the jaded, irritate the Wine Police, and generally go well with anything red wine goes well with.
