2016 Hanzell "Estate" Sonoma Valley Chardonnay (Elsewhere $65+) (Elsewhere $65+)
Top Pick!
95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This impressive white delivers a core of quince, lemon rind and apple that blends with accents of white flower and lemongrass. Crisp acidity drives the freshness on the textured palate, offering elegance and plenty of layers of intrigue. This will do well in the cellar; enjoy 2021 - 2026. (VB)" (05/2019) 94 points Vinous: "The 2016 Chardonnay is a very pretty, understated wine from Hanzell. Lifted, gracious and quite subtle, it is super-expressive today. Readers should expect a finessed, translucent, incredibly distinctive C...

92 points Wine Spectator: "This sings, offering notes of grass, lemon and gooseberry, all elegantly displayed on a vivid structure. Picks up savory mineral details midpalate, while hints of cardamom and coriander mark the prolonged finish. Drink now through 2027. (AZ)" (11/2019) K&L Notes: Stephane Riffault, son of Claude Riffault, is turning out some of the best Sancerres in the region. After working with Olivier Leflaive in Beaune, you can see a streak of Burdundian sensibility in Stephane's winemaking style. With 13 hectares of vines across 4 vil...

2017 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis 1er Cru "Butteaux" Vieilles Vignes
Top Pick!
94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A formidable rendition of this reliably superb cuvée, Michel's 2017 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux Vieilles Vignes wafts from the glass with a complex but reserved bouquet of fresh peach, crisp yellow apple, iodine, mandarin oil and paraffin wax. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep, dense and concentrated, with a racy spine of acidity cloaked in vibrant fruit, concluding with a long, searingly saline finish. This is well worth seeking out. (WK)" (08/2019) 94 points Vinous: "The 2017 Chablis Butteaux Vieil...

94 points Vinous: "The 2017 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru is gorgeous. Sweet, perfumed and light on its feet, the 2017 possesses striking aromatic intensity and nuance. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint, white pepper and chamomile add layers of nuance to a super-refined Chablis that conveys energy and finesse - the two key signatures of this great premier cru site. (AG)" (01/2020) 93 points John Gilman: "With the very low yields here in Montée de Tonnerre, I was expecting this wine to be a bit dense and further behind in its development than the o...

2017 Belisario "Cambrugiano" Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva
Top Pick!
97 points Decanter: "Very fine nose, intense and concentrated with fragrant floral aromas and white peach framed by thyme and rosemary notes with white pepper touches. Fresh and lively palate with a spicy finish. *Platinum* (DWWA 2021)" (04/2021) 92 points Wine & Spirits: "A portion of this Riserva ages in barrel, gaining depth and richness that dovetails beautifully with the zesty lemon and lime flavors and the bright salinity that surges through the wine. Appealing now for its fresh florality, it will gain further richness and complexity after a few ...

2017 Trimbach "Sélection de Vieilles Vignes" Riesling Alsace
Top Pick!
96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Initial smoky notes of reduction make way for a pervasive, subtle but luminous lemon freshness on the nose of this wine. The palate shows exquisite concentration in lemon freshness. It's bone dry, vivid and fresh. *#2 Wine of 2020 Enthusiast 100, Editors' Choice* (AK)" (05/2020) 95 points James Suckling: "Solid white with density and searing dryness and minerality that is very impressive with sliced apples, lemons and white peaches. Super energy." (07/2019) 93 points John Gilman: "The 2017 'Selection de Vieilles Vignes' fr...

2017 Calera Mt. Harlan Chardonnay (Elsewhere $50) (Elsewhere $50)
Top Pick!
96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Hailing from Josh Jensen’s iconic vineyard at 2,200 feet above the Salinas Valley, this is an epic Chardonnay, loaded with clean, lively aromas of cherimoya, honeysuckle, sweet cream, crisp peach, struck flint and chive. The palate is tightly wound, with flavors of lemon spray, seared nectarine, sea salt and toasted oak. (MK)" (09/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Chardonnay Mount Harlan went through full malolactic and aged 15 months in 30% new French oak. The nose unfurls to mushroom tart, prosciutto...

2016 Saxon Brown "Sangiacomo Vineyard - Green Acres Hill" Carneros Chardonnay (Previously $60) (Previously $60)
Top Pick!
93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Chardonnay Sangiacomo Vineyard Green Acres Hill features orange blossom, quince, white peach and slivered almonds scents on the nose. It's medium to full-bodied in the mouth with intense honeyed fruits, great freshness and a lively, mineral-tinged finish. 115 cases produced. (EB)" (04/2019) 91 points Wine Spectator: "A ripe and plush style, with buttery accents to the baked apple, roasted pineapple and pear tart flavors. The spicy finish is loaded with pastry hints. 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Viña Gravonia Blanco comes from a rainy, cool and challenging vintage when the grapes didn't reach the perfect ripeness the 2012 (that I tasted next to it) displayed. It has citrus notes (orange peel, yuzu) and an herbal twist, balsamic with the unmistakably white López de Heredia aroma of mushrooms that you smell as soon as you enter their ancient cellars. It's quite pale, and the palate is sharp and austere, quite light but with the pungent flavors and a long and tasty finish. This is a relatively simp...

93 points James Suckling: " Love the smoky, licorice character to the dried-pineapple and cooked-apple flavors. Complex and delicious. Medium to full body. Creamy and gorgeous. Drink now." (07/2019) 93 points Vinous: "Bright straw. Compelling aromas of dried fruits, fresh citrus, sweet spices and honey speak of at least partly air-dried grapes. Then sweet and chewy, but with great suaveness and sappy verve to the delicate orchard and citrus flavors. Currently a little locked up in the middle, but much deeper, richer and more complex than the 2015 Gewür...

According to Allen Meadows: "Jacques Bavard is a former Paris restauranteur and a fifth generation Puligny winemaker. He lives in the old stone house of his grandfather on the Grand Rue. However, he is not farming his family vines but has become a micro-négoce working closely with several growers. Bavard prefers early picking since he believes Burgundy needs nervous energy to better display its terroir. He works with a mix of conventionally-sized barrels and with 350 liter barrels with the goal of obtaining more volume on the mid-palate but with less woo...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a barrel-fermented blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc made by Steve Matthiasson for the winery. Aged 10 months in French oak, 30% of it new, it is sublime and racy, tasting of candied lemon and exotic feijoas, with lasting freshness and complexity. (VB)" (11/2020) Jancis Robinson: "This definitely smells like an oaked Sauvignon/Sémillon blend but closer in style to a white bordeaux than anything that comes out of Margaret River in Western Australia. There are subtle herbal notes, a touch of grapefruit and clementi...

92 points Wine & Spirits: "This is young-vine malvasia grown in coastal sands on the westernmost point of the Iberian peninsula, where the region’s vineyards, once renowned for long-lived wines, have mostly been replaced by beach homes. This was fermented in stainless steel, left for four months on the lees, then racked before aging in tank for three years. It’s since grown into a plump, toasty white with scents of iodine and kelp. There’s a spiciness that lasts; Assistant Editor Deanna Gonnella, who has a soft spot for Colares, placed this one with “a b...

2017 La Chablisienne Chablis 1er Cru "Vaillons"
Top Pick!
92 points James Suckling: "The chalky notes are very fresh here and lead to lemon and grapefruit aromas with a super taut, composed and gently flinty palate that has good acidity punch. " (07/2019) 92 points Vinous: "The 2017 Chablis Vaillons 1er Cru is super inviting. The interplay of richness and tension is intriguing. Lemon peel, white flowers and crushed rocks give the Vaillons terrific energy and cut. Lemon peel, white flowers and crushed rocks give the Vaillons an unusual amount of saline intensity. This taut, nervy wine is very nicely done. (AG)...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Winemakers Braiden Albrecht and Andy Erickson crafted magic out of a difficult vintage, picking the grapes for this beautiful white well before the October 2017 fires. It's gorgeously racy and light, bright and effusive, offering fleshy flavors of peach and lemon. Licorice and fennel finish out the expressive wine, which persists in wet stone. *Editors' Choice* (VB)" (08/2019) 94 points James Suckling: "Very pretty, old-school style with sliced-lemon, apple and candied-lemon character. Creamy undertones. Full-bodied, tight a...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This atypical variety for the area shines from the producer’s steep, dry-farmed estate vineyard. Light, complex and silky on the waxy palate, it offers flavors of green apple, apricot and grapefruit alongside touches of honey and wet stone. (VB)" (08/2021)

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Chardonnay Anderson Valley from the team at Rhys knocks it out of the park, and I suspect it’s a screaming value. White peach, apple blossom, spice, and some white flower notes all flow to a medium-bodied, elegant, seamless Chardonnay that has tons of character. It will keep for 5-7 years." John Gilman: "The 2016 Alesia Anderson Valley Chardonnay is a nicely cool customer at 12.5 percent and quite aromatically expressive, wafting from the glass in a fine blend of peach, a touch of guava, lovely soil tones, touch of fresh...

2017 La Chablisienne Chablis 1er Cru "Côte de Léchet"
Top Pick!
92 points Vinous: "The 2017 Chablis Côte de Léchet 1er Cru is a bit compact in feel, but it more than makes up for that with its persistence and energy. Dried pear, spice, mint and crushed flowers are some of the many nuances that develop in the glass. Bright saline and white pepper accents add to a real feeling of vibrancy. Even with a bit of air, the Côte de Léchet remains one of the more inward of the 1er Crus in this range. I would give it time in bottle to see if it softens. (AG)" (01/2020) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Elegant and fin...

95 points James Halliday: "Exaggerated style with grilled peach, burnt butter and smoky oak combining to form a rich, mouthfilling whole. It doesn't take a skerrick of a backward step but it keeps the pace high and it finishes as though it could pump out flavour all day (and night) long. *Gold* (CM)" (08/2019)

91 points James Suckling: "Attractively fused florals and white peaches with lychees and apricots. The palate has a very fleshy feel with rich and juicy texture and smooth peaches and apples. Lightly sweet, full-ish finish. " (07/2019) 91 points Vinous: "Pale yellow-gold. Fresh, lively aromas and flavors of smoky duck sausage, cinnamon, rose petal and grapefruit. Very long, rich and dense Gewürz that closes pleasantly lifted and spicy. I like how light on its feet this is, despite its richness. Improves greatly with a little aeration, so make sure you ...

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Chardonnay Santa Cruz Mountains Alesia has a touch more depth in its aromas and flavors, offering a ripe bouquet of citrus blossom, honeysuckle, peach, and orange blossoms. Medium-bodied, rounded, and layered, with a terrific mid-palate, it packs plenty of muscle while staying beautifully balanced." (10/2019) 92 points John Gilman: "The 2017 Santa Cruz Mountains bottling of chardonnay from Alesia is just a whisper riper than the superb Anderson Valley cuvée, but still very civilized at 12.6 percent octane. The wine is d...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese has a very clear bouquet, but it still shyly reveals its ripe apple fruit and raisin aromas. On the palate this is a rich, sweet and piquant, well balanced and refreshingly salty Spätlese with a great finesse and elegance. In former issues this wine was always designated as AP #7, but since there is no other bottling of this wine in 2013 I do not refer to the AP number. (SR)" (02/2015) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "The best Mosel Rieslings of the difficult ...

Winemaker: Eric Johnson. Day Job: Talley Vineyards. Side Hustle: Ann Albert Wines. Many California winemakers go above and beyond their “day job” and have their own personal label separate from the winery or brand that pays their regular paycheck--a "side hustle," if you will. Over the years some of the coolest wines we've tasted have been these side hustle wines. They seem to provide the perfect conduit for creative vinous outpourings. They allow a blank canvas for the artist to work with the varieties or vineyards they choose, apply more experimental w...

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Light gold-colored, the 2017 Chardonnay Estate offers a rocking bouquet of spiced apple, white peach, white flowers, and toasted bread. This carries to a medium-bodied, fleshy, beautifully balanced effort that's already drinking brilliantly. " K&L Notes: Winery notes: The Hilt Estate Chardonnay is made up of fruit from the three maritime influenced vineyards in the southwest corner of the Sta. Rita Hills appellation: Radian, Bentrock, and Puerta del Mar. The vines range in age between 8 and 44 years old and grow on diatomatious e...

90 points Vinous: "Luminous straw-gold. Varietally accurate aromas and flavors of smoke, grilled pork, white pepper and tropical fruit, but this has a lemony zing that gives a graceful mouthfeel despite a hint of chewy tannins at the back. The finish is long and ripe. Trimbach does not make this every year but only when they are able to buy good-quality grapes (the wine is made with roughly 95% purchased grapes). The most recent previous Gewürz Réserve was the 2011. About 14,000 bottles made. (ID)" (04/2018)

97 points Decanter: " Sleek with bright lemon curd, smoky flint and opulent lime marmalade on the nose, while the elegantly textured palate is graced with pithy lime zest, wet stone and zippy citrus fruit." (10/2020) 95 points Bob Campbell: "A majestic wine with a distinctive personality. The statuesque palate is refined and sophisticated, yet also open and inviting. Delicious subtle toastiness weaves its way throughout the lime-infused palate. And there is a defining line of acidity running through the length of the wine. Bone-dry and outstanding (Huo...

93 points James Halliday: "Wild yeast barrel-fermented, full mlf, 11 months in 1yo French puncheons. The deep colour gives an indication of what's to come. Rich aromas of nougat, butterscotch, peach and almond lead into a palate glycerous in texture and long in flavour with plenty of acidity. The quality is there, and it will be better when all the components have fully integrated." (08/2019) Jancis Robinson: "Broad, with masses of fruit and real character. Very distinctive with a beginning, middle and end. Real terroir stuff." (09/2019)

2016 Trimbach "Cuvée du Troiscentquatrevingtdixième (390th Anniversary)" Riesling Alsace
Top Pick!
95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Notes of petrol and pear are focused and intense on the nose. The palate is bright and lemony, with a silky smoothness. A long, puckery finish leaves a tingly sensation, as well as delicious notes of dill, fennel frond and eucalyptus. This wine is a bit of a slow burner and could easily keep aging, but there’s plenty here to enjoy and discover now. (LS)" (03/2022) 94 points Vinous: "Vivid straw-green. Rich aromas of soft citrus fruits, honey and minerals. Dense, juicy and tactile on the palate, featuring expressive flavors o...

94 points James Suckling: " What a beautiful, delicate peachy nose! On the palate there's a grace and elegance that's rare in this category. A long, very mineral and clean finish. Drink or hold – this would go at least another decade in the bottle. Screw cap." (10/2017) 94 points Vinous: "At 12.2% alcohol, this weighs in marginally (and surprisingly) higher than did its 2015 counterpart. But you’d never guess that from the buoyancy it exhibits. Its sunny disposition, infectious juiciness and invigorating pungency – all reflecting an aromatically penetr...

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Chardonnay Dupratt comes from the Anderson Valley and was brought up in 20% new French oak. It’s a more racy, vibrant Chardonnay that offers lots of white fruits, wet granite-like minerality, white flowers, and hints of tart apple. It builds with time in the glass and is medium-bodied, has a rounded, supple texture, beautiful purity of fruit, and a great finish. While it plays in the lighter style of the estate, it has terrific intensity and depth. It’s going to keep for upwards of a decade."

Eladio Pineiro is an artist. His approach to winemaking is incredibly creative and unusual. The wine spending 15 months with lees aging. This not unusual for Albarino but what is it that this wine spent 3 months aging on the less of the 2014 and 3 months aging on the lees of the 2016. I am still trying to figure out the math on that! After that it is bottled where it will age for an additional two years before release. This shows the aging potential of Albarino. The nose almost suggests old Riesling.

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "The latest vintage of Ryan Walsh's top tier Chardonnay is as joyous to drink as the previous one, although it feels less age-worthy and a little more rustic in style. Lemon hued and slightly cloudy, it offers up heady aromas of bruised apple, nougat, salted nut and oyster shell. The seaside vibes continue on the palate, where the tangy fruit and bright acidity harmonize with a slippery texture and ocean spray saltiness." (06/2019) 93 points Vinous: "Limpid yellow-gold. Pungent pear skin, Meyer lemon and chamomile qualities o...

94 points Vinous: "The 2017 Fiano di Avellino Stilema opens slowly, unwinding with dusty dried flowers, crushed oyster shells and incense giving way to young peaches and hints of exotic spice. This soothes with silken textures and ripe stone fruits, as tension builds through a mix of saline-minerals and lemon oils toward the close, all under an enriching air of crushed hazelnut. A salty flourish and sour citrus linger through the lightly structured finale, as the 2017 Fiano Stilema tapers off with impressive length. As gorgeous as this is today, it will ...

93 points Vinous: "Light, glistening yellow. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes fresh citrus and orchard fruits, dusty minerals and white flowers, and a hint of chamomile emerges with air. Sappy, penetrating and energetic on the palate, offering Meyer lemon, pear, candied ginger and toasted brioche flavors that slowly deepen and spread out on the back half. Powerful and concentrated yet lithe in character, finishing with strong energy and lingering floral and mineral notes.
