This is one of the extremely rare examples of a pure Chardonnay Champagne from the Aube department. It comes from one plot, at the highest elevation in the village of Les Riceys, all on Kimmeridgian clay soil, the same as in Chablis. In fact, this plot is less than three miles from the boarder with Burgundy, and over its long history belonged to the Dukes of Burgundy as often as to the Comtes of Champagne! Luckily for us, it is on the Champagne side of the line now, and the 2013 harvest has provided us with a toasty Champagne full of clean earth (like in...

2005 Maison Charles Noëllat Savigny-Lès-Beaune
New!
The original Charles Noellat estate was absorbed by Domaine Leroy in 1988, yet the name lives on as a négociant label sourcing grapes from some of the finest vineyards in Burgundy. Jasper Morris, MW writes: "The Noëllat tribe are abundant in this part of the Côte de Nuits. Two brothers, Charles and Ernest, flourished in the early part of the 20th century. Charles had a son, André, who died in 1941, and whose daughter Odile married Alain Hudelot, to form Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat in Vougeot."

2012 Domaine Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Cazetiers"
Back In Stock!
92-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An agreeably fresh if restrained dark berry fruit nose of newly turned earth and sauvage notes leads to strikingly intense, powerful and concentrated medium-weight flavors that are built on a pungent minerality, all wrapped in a complex, explosively long, balanced and driving finish. This is a dazzlingly good effort though note well that it is expressly built to age and it will need plenty of it. *Sweet Spot, Outstanding*" (01/2014) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" ...

92-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An intensely earthy, somber and brooding nose of fresh cassis and black raspberry is followed by equally taciturn broad-shouldered flavors that possess forbidding size, weight and intensity as well as outstanding length on the powerful and palate staining finish. This is a classic example and at present, very, very austere and thus will not be for everyone. It's also clearly for the very patient." (01/2012)

Allen Meadows reports on the 2003s from this house: "Geoffroy Choppin de Janvry said that he waited until 'September 24th to begin picking. Even though we didn't have a lot of problem with oidium save for Marconnets, we threw out a lot of under ripe and hail damaged fruit. In fact, by the time we finished, we had yields of only 28 to 30 hl/ha, which means that we threw out close to 25% between what we left in the vineyards themselves and on the sorting table here at the cuvérie. I went for slightly less extraction at the end of the fermentation because w...

2012 Domaine Faiveley Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Les Charmes"
New!
90-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An ultra-elegant and intensely floral nose of red currant and raspberry aromas is trimmed in just enough wood to notice. There is a lacy and pure mouth feel to the lightly mineral-inflected medium weight flavors that possess plenty of energy on the balanced, cool and beautifully persistent finish. A classic Charmes of harmony and grace. *Outstanding*" (06/2014) 90-93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good bright red. Complex nose melds red berries, cardamom, flowers and soil tones. Ripe, smooth...

91 points Wine Spectator: "Juicy, sporting cherry, raspberry and currant flavors, shaded by smoke and eucalyptus accents. The oak stands out on the finish, which is spicy and long. The most approachable of the three Morot crus. (BS)" (04/2014) 88-90 points Vinous: "Reduced nose offers dark cherry, smoky dark berries, game and musky underbrush. Taut and chewy in the mouth, in a distinctly more masculine style than the last couple of wines. Little easy sweetness here. The tannins are chewy and serious but nicely ripe. This will need at least a few years ...

92-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Generous if not dominant wood serve as a not-so-subtle backdrop to the intensely sauvage and spicy red currant, cassis, plum and pungently earth aromas. The attractively textured and mouth coating large-scaled flavors enjoy copious amounts of palate coating and tannin-buffering dry extract along with plenty of minerality that adds lift to the imposingly structured finish. This massive effort is very definitely old school and there will be no point in opening this before at least a decade of aging has occurred. *Do...

91-93 points Vinous: "Gorgeous aromatic lift, precision and tension are the hallmarks of the 2012 Volnay Fremiets. Here the fruit takes on more burnished shades of color, with hints of dark red and black berries, crushed flowers and sweet spices. The Fremiets is a wine of total nuance and precision, and shows the more finessed side of the year. (AG)" (01/2014) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep, slightly roasted aromas of blackberry, licorice and smoke. Sweet on the attack, then thick and fine-grained in the middle, with dense dark fruit...

2012 Domaine Faiveley Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Les Damodes"
Back In Stock!
91-93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright dark red. Captivating precision to the aromas of flowers, crushed stone, chocolate and cardamom. Sweet, silky and smooth but with excellent energy to the dense berry and spice flavors. Still a bit youthfully tight but spreads out impressively on the long, perfumed finish. This weightless wine leaves the salivary glands quivering." (01/2014) 89-92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An overtly spicy nose of cool and earthy aromas of red currant and elegant floral notes. There is good deline...

2001 Domaine Faiveley Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru "Les Porêts-St-Georges"
New!
87-90 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is almost a hypothetical blend of the Lavières and the Marchais, combining the density and mid-palate concentration of the former with the robust, muscular, structured quality of the latter. Complex, dense, direct, rustic and honest with plenty of grip and length and this too will require patience before it will be at its best." (01/2003) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Dark, bright red. Sweet, perfumed aromas of cherry, dark berries, flowers and mint. Juicy, cool and on the lean side, with mod...

2009 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (1.5L) (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
96 points Wine Spectator: "Displays enticing aromas of flowers, cherry, strawberry and spice, with a hint of leather and licorice in reserve and a long, long finish. A wall of tannins shuts this down—at least for now. The aromas are worth the price of admission. (BS)" (06/2012) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Clos Vougeot is remarkably polished and fine in this vintage. It may ultimately prove to be better than the 2010 given that the heat of the year has tamed the tannins to such a significant degree. Layers of red fruit built to th...

95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A perfumed and highly complex nose features the classic sauvage character of a fine Renardes with plenty of spice, earth and underbrush nuances present on the very fresh mix of red currant and plum aromas. There is outstanding intensity, richness and concentration to the big-bodied mineral-driven flavors that also display an abundance of palate coating dry extract on the tremendously long finish. This doesn't have the same underlying tension as the Rugiens but it's even longer. A qualitative choice but note that thes...

2009 Louis Jadot 1er Cru Chambolle Musigny "Les Baudes" (1.5L) (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
91-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Like the Fuées, this is highly perfumed and very Chambolle with its restrained, complex and ultra-pure nose of red pinot fruit but here there is a more evident taut muscularity to the delineated, intense and equally pure medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent energy as well as a mineral-streak that runs to the serious, dusty and driving finish. I quite like this and the balance and concentration should permit it to age well for at least a decade and last several more. Impressive. *Outstanding*" (05/2011) 9...
Price: $239.99

96 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is ultra-cool and restrained aromatically with its airy and even elegant aromas of intensely floral, spicy and stony wild dark berry scents that are also trimmed in just enough wood to warrant commenting on. There is a gorgeous texture to the equally mineral-inflected and muscular broad-shouldered and impressively concentrated flavors that possess a Zen-like harmony on the impeccably well-balanced, moderately austere and hugely long finish. This should be genuinely wonderful if given at least a decade's snooze i...

95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Here the nose is similar to the regular cuvée from a compositional standpoint but the fruit is denser, slightly riper and more complex as well. The very concentrated broad-shouldered flavors possess excellent concentration as the copious dry extract both coats the palate and buffers the extremely firm tannic spine on the explosively long but impeccably well-balanced finish. This is distinctly old school in style and will require extended cellaring to arrive at its peak. I would not recommend buying this ultra-serious...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Also 100% barrel-fermented, the 2007 Chardonnay Grangerville Vineyard reveals a light medium gold color along with aromas of nectarines, white peaches, crushed rocks, creme brulee, and honeyed lemon. Fresh, full-bodied, rich, and structured, with little oak in evidence, I would not be surprised to see this Chardonnay age for a decade or more. " (08/2010)
Price: $64.99

93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A very reserved nose speaks primarily of plum liqueur and warm earth aromas that are very much in keeping with the intense, powerful and firmly structured medium weight plus flavors that possess a velvety and mouth coating finish that delivers outstanding length. This understated and decidedly old school effort possesses fine balance and there is enough underlying material to suggest that this should offer 15 to 18 years of upside development potential." (01/2013)
