98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV Pedro Ximenez Solera 1927 is non-vintage, but does have some 1927 material in it. This is totally dark brown/amber with notes of figs, toffee, caramel syrup, molasses and coffee. It is dense, super sweet, intense, rich and an amazingly, unctuously textured, thick beverage to consume slowly and introspectively after a meal. Drink now through 2050, or even longer. (RP)" (11/2015) 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "One of the world's best PX wines is Solera 1927, the pride of Alvear. Whatever solera stocks went in...

97 points James Suckling: "Forget fashion and go for gold! Enormously complex, toasted and caramelized nuts, married to wonderful creaminess that is all lit up by acidity that’s so supernaturally vibrant that you barely realize this has any sweetness. Very long, subtle and uplifting finish. Drink now." (12/2018) 95 points Decanter: "Layers of mouthwatering flavours; dried fruits, peanut brittle, cream caramel, coffee, cedar and a beautifully luscious texture with freshness, lift and a long, rich finish. *Gold Medal Decanter World Wine Awards 2018*" (04...

1946 Bodegas Toro Albala "Don PX Convento Selección" Pedro Ximénez Jerez (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1946 Don PX Convento Seleccion produced with Pedro Ximenez grapes dehydrated under the sun at the time of the Second World War, was only bottled in September 2011. This is an extreme wine, my first descriptor was ultra-mega-super concentrated. It is unbelievably powerful, both in the nose and the palate, full of umami, with sweet cinnamon, Christmas cake, camphor, petrol, lemongrass, Belgian chocolate and butter. Incredibly complex and rich, sweet, balanced and smooth in the palate, it is both very sweet and...

Gonzalez Byass "Viña AB" Amontillado (375ml)
New!
93 points Wine & Spirits: "This is the youngest Amontillado from Gonzalez Byass, with four years of aging under flor and another four years in oxidative aging. True to form, it is a delightful wine, graceful and elegant in its fine balance between acidity, minerality and a soft, almost delicate body. It takes on surprising force with air, a sense of limestone in scent and flavor that propels the wine toward something rich, like grilled sea bass." (10/2015) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Lemon peel, singed almond and walnut notes form the core, with a faint...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The non-vintage Dry Amontillado Los Arcos Solera Reserva reveals a medium amber hue along with a nutty, honeyed, dry personality with great acid...The portfolio of under $25 a bottle selections represents remarkable value for their complex, well-made personalities. Lustau includes a bottling date code as purchasers would want to buy Finos and Manzanillas as young as possible. It is difficult to describe the glories of sherry, but I’ll try. These Solera Reservas are all great reference points at a low price point ...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The medium amber, nutty Napoleon Amontillado is a dry style sherry, also a fine aperitif. " (02/2007) Wine & Spirits: "Subtle in its salinity while generous in its nutty flavors, this approachable Amontillado ends on light caramel flavors. For an aperitif with aged goat cheese." (06/2011) K&L Notes: What a terrific Amontillado! Gently toasted nut and candied citrus aromas lead to a subtle, elegant, nutty palate. While the salty, flor qualities are not cranking on all cylinders here, there is an elegance, sof...

The grapes (Malvasia Fina, Códega, Rabigato, Gouveio) are hand harvested and softly crushed after partial destemming. The wine was fermented in stainless steel on the grape skins, allowing for their important flavor compounds to be extracted. This is done under temperature control so that the winemaker can keep an eye on the alcoholic fermentation to ensure that the addition of aguardiente (grape spirit) is added at just the right time. This addition of aguardiente halts the fermentation and is the key to creating Port wines sweetness.

97 points James Suckling: "Concentrated and complex dried-fruit character that spans the fruit spectrum from citrus through to raisins. There’s a ton of caramel, too. Yet, miraculously, this isn’t a jot too much. Rather, the acidity shines a laser beam of light-like clarity onto these riches. Great length. Drink this sweet-sherry marvel now!" (10/2018) 95 points Decanter: "DWWA 2018 Gold Medal: Nuts and coffee on the wonderfully complex nose, with hints of cheese, rich deep chocolatey palate with coffee and spice in the delightfully long finish." (04/2...

The German Family named Kopke came from Hamburg to Lisbon in 1636. Two years later, in 1638, Christiano Kopke established himself in Oporto, as merchant and exporter of Portuguese products, and he started the export of Portuguese wines already produced in the region, as part of his business. When the Wine - then known as Portwine - was recognized, the House of Kopke which is today the oldest Portwine's export firm, was one of the leaders in the field. Through many generations, the company was run by several members of Kopke's family, obtaining an excelle...

95 points James Suckling: " To anyone who knows British Christmas pudding, the dense flavors of dried fruit, burnt sugar and spices will be nothing new. However, the sheer density of flavor will be something new to many, as will the stunning acidity at the finish. " (08/2018) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Ripe aromas of apricot, raisin and chocolate offer complex notes of dried cheese and sweat, making this anything but usual and normal. A jacked palate is racy and untamed, with bright acidity that's uncommon for wines this sweet. Chocolate, cinnamon, nu...

This classic Muscat is made from the smaller berried and more aromatic Petits Grains. It is fortified shortly after fermentation leaving it at a sweet but not too sweet 110g/L residual sugar. Perfect foil for tarts, fruit pies and soft creamy cheeses.

92 points Wine Spectator: "Intense, with roasted almond, Brazil nut and walnut notes lending this a slightly burly aspect, while gunpowder tea, bitter orange and almond accents add a taut feel through the finish. This is a distinctive, edgy version that Sherry geeks will dig. Drink now. 1,500 cases made" (02/2016) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Faraon Oloroso is aromatic with aromas of hazelnuts, walnuts, and raisins and a broad, dry flavor profile." (02/2007) Wine & Spirits: "An accessible Oloroso, this has briny aromas melding with s...

92 points Wine & Spirits: "Juan García Jarana, the motorcycle magnate of Jerez, sells a portion of his soleras to Lustau for this delicate Oloroso. It starts with notes of candied almonds, coconut palm syrup and caramel. The hint of salinity lends complexity and freshness, without diminishing that delicate, pleasing sweetness." (06/2009) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Just add this oloroso to the growing list of excellent Sherries from Lustau. This one is tellingly nutty on the nose, thus the hazelnut and walnut flavors are expected as they become part of...

Portugal is a country with a rich tradition of fortified wine making. One of the most commonly overlooked regions is Setubal, famous for Moscatel de Setubal. WIth Moscatal (Muscat) grown on the limestone rich soils of the Serra Arrabida, located on the Southern side of the Setubal Peninsula which is just 30 miles from Lisbon. The appellation has a unique method of production, the grapes are harvested and fermentation is halted with the addition of the fortifying spirit. The wine is then aged, with its skins for up to 6 months. After which it is then...

91 points Wine Spectator: "This is bright for a cream Sherry, with green tea and singed ginger notes out front, providing heft to the date, raisin, caramel and charred bourbon barrel accents. The sleek finish lets the green tea edge reemerge, with well-embedded acidity for length. Drink now. (JM)" (10/2013) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Smooth and sweet, like a cream Sherry is supposed to be. On the nose, this one easily shifts from ripe apricot and peach fruit to nuts and saline. The palate starts with a blast of coffee and mocha and then folds in brown...

Cesar Florido, aka "Mr. Moscatel," produces sweet, fortified wines from Moscatel grapes, which thrive in the sandy soil of Chipiona (very proximate to Sanlucar de Barrameda). Though this area is famous for Moscatel, most of it is sold to the larger houses; Florido is one of only two bodegas producing moscatel wines independent of the local co-op. The sugar laden grapes are pressed and then ferment to about 2 degrees, at which point neutral grape spirit is added to fortify the wine up to 15%, leaving a good amount of sugar in the wine. After a year of ...

El Maestro Sierra was founded in 1830 by master cooper José Antonio Sierra, who ran a prosperous barrel-building business called La Merced. Recognized as one of the top coopers in the area, he longed to become involved in the Sherry trade itself. Eventually, he set about building a small winery with the aim of making the best sherries possible. Pilar Pla Pechovierto, the current owner of El Maestro Sierra since 1976, is a brave and resolute woman who managed to drive the business forward despite the prevailing machismo of the time. Henriques & Henriques (H&H) 10 year old Bual Madeira
New!
90 points Wine & Spirits: "Scents of caramel and lemon pith contrast this wine’s compressed flavors, pulling broad, smoky highlights out of the earthy celery-root notes. It feels round, with enough brightness to balance both the sweetness and the earthiness. Complete on its own, this offers intriguing possibilities with savory desserts, like a chestnut cream." (02/2016) K&L Notes: H&H is the only producer of Madeira who produces wine primarily from their own vineyards, an advantage they have always enjoyed since the company's founding in 1850. All thei...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Slightly richer than the Charleston Sercial, the Boston Bual boasts knockout aromas of toasted nut oil, orange peel and hints of dark honey or maple syrup. Despite the extra weight and sweetness, it's not cloying at all the finish is mouthwatering and long. *Editors' Choice* (JC)" (11/2006) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Nutty aromas and flavors are filled with buttery notes in this plush and sweet style. Dried apricot and mango details add to the richness. Finishes with seductive smoke, dried beef and cocoa powder components. (...

94 points John Gilman: "I really like the Rare Wine Company’s Charleston Sercial bottling, which is one of my favorites in their fine historic Madeira bottling series. This wine only has one percent residual sugar, which with Madeira’s inherent tangy acids, comes across as quite dry, but beautifully buffered. The bouquet is a first class blend of white cherries, oranges, a touch of nutskin, fresh nutmeg, smoky overtones and a lovely base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and beautifully transparent, with a superb core, racy acids...

94 points Wine & Spirits: "Notes of anise and clove distinguish this robust Oloroso, accenting its salinity. It recalls the coasts of Jerez with aromas and flavors of iodine, salt and the signature earthy dampness of Hidalgo's very old soleras. Firm on the palate, with sharp acidity that penetrates the depths of the wine's flavors, this would be delicious with clams sautéed in olive oil and garlic." (06/2009) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Shows lovely focus and persistence, with a prominent thread of bitter almond that runs from start to finish, while sin...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "A medium-dry style made from the Verdlho grape, this wine is fruity while always shot through with Madeira's trademark acidity. Nuts, spice, old wood and an intense juiciness make this a good aperitif. (RV)" (02/2019) 90 points Wine & Spirits: "Scents of caramel and lemon pith contrast this wine’s compressed flavors, pulling broad, smoky highlights out of the earthy celery-root notes. 92 points Wine & Spirits: "This is a selection from botas of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez raised separately and then blended to age for three years in solera. The result puts the sweetness of the PX in front, with flavors of plum jam and tobacco. The salinity of the Oloroso brings freshness and fine minerality that play softly in the background. " (06/2011) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a ripe, honeyed style of Sherry with deep brown sugar and cinnamon aromas. Its solid palate is under control and not syrupy, tapering into brown sugar and fig flavor...

93 points Wine & Spirits: "Although part of Lustau’s basic line, this Solera PX shows great depth of flavor, a complex network of caramelized aromas mingling with notes reminiscent of dried plums, chocolate and exotic spices. Sweet and opulent, this is creamy and rich in all its aspects." (10/2015) 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "With piercing aromas of raisin pudding, molasses and spice, this rolls out the welcome mat and more. Luscious is probably as tame as you can put it; this is a ribald sweet wine with acidic backbone and hugely intense flavors of ba...

96 points Wine & Spirits: "The wines that make up this Palo Cortado have an average age of more than 25 years. Originally, it was aged in Calle Ponce in the city of Jerez; hence the initials still printed on the label. During aging, the wine is refreshed with Fino Inocente and Amontillado Tío Diego, two other top bottlings in Valdespino’s portfolio. The end result is a wine that smells smoky and rich in caramelized flavor, but tastes dry to the bone; all those ripe flavors become the purest mineral impressions. A sense of chalky albariza soil floods the ...

96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Gold reflections glimmer in this amber-colored sweet wine that has aromas of apricot, yellow peach and Bartlett pear. The palate shows flavors of acacia honey, canned apricot and Anjou pear. The finish has enough acidity to stand up to the sweetness. (JJ)" (08/2021)
Price: $54.99

92 points Wine Spectator: "Toasted sesame, date, walnut bread and cocoa notes mingle here, giving this a solid bass line, while a racy ginger streak imparts spine. The finish is sweet along the edges, with a slightly austere bitter almond accent running down the middle. Drink now. 2,500 cases made. (JM)" (07/2017) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Colheita offers up a rich bouquet of dates, figs, brown sugar, walnuts and honey. It is rare to find a cream that is a classic version of the style, which is to say, one that shows the depth of flavor and complexity from oloroso to balance the intense sweetness from Pedro Ximenez. It is even rarer to find a VOS version of this, but here it is: a delicious, lightly sweet yet complex, balanced and poised, distinguished old cream from Bodegas Tradición. Founded in 1998 by construction magnate Joaquín Rivera, Bodegas Tradición focuses exclusively on very old Sherry. Having come from a family with deep roots in the region and the Sherry bu...

Bid on this bottle of 1908 D'Oliveiras Boal Madeira Reserva (92RP, 92VN). Vinous: "The 1908 Boal Reserva is a Madeira that I have encountered two or three times. This centenary bottling is deep amber in color. The nose conveys a wonderful sense of purity and features nectarine, fig and saffron; traces of crustacea emerge with time. The very well-balanced palate is quite intense with a potent oxidative tang, fanning out on the vibrant finish. Excellent. (NM)" (10/2019)
