Mas Codina is a 40-hectare estate in Penedès which dates back to 1681. This Brut Reserva Cava was hand-harvested from 25- to 40-year-old vines and estate-bottled. Though it does not say it on the label, the current disgorgement is based entirely on the 2015 harvest. Vines are planted in calcareous and sandy clay soils which keep the wine minerally and lively. The wine undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle, and is aged on its lees for a minimum of two years before disgorgement. Varietals include Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. 100%...

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Most of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 20 hectares, which are north-facing and located at 600 meters in altitude, affording the visitor with one of the most dramatically beautiful views of Rioja's main mountain ranges: the Sierra Cantabria mountains immediately to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda mountains to the south. This white win...

Amats is both the brand name of the Txakoli as well as one of Zudugarai's vineyards. It's a beautiful vineyard, a sandy substrate covered in naturally growing green cover crops between the rows, with the Cantabrian Sea in full view to the north. Produced from Hondarribi Zuri grapes, this is classic Txakoli: zippy, crisp, tart green apple flavors are enlivened by a lovely sparkle from the CO2 retained in tank during fermentation.

Our seventh vintage of this direct import Albariño, this wine shows everything we like in the grape: hints of lemongrass, lively stone fruit, and a brisk, saline-tinged palate. Located in the sub-zone of Condado do Tea, where the days are a bit warmer and evenings are slightly cooler, there is a wonderful mid-palate presence to complement the typically lean and mineral qualities of Albariño. A classic with any shellfish, especially Dungeness crab!

Based in the Southern Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is bodega producing expressive, regionally specific wines at very reasonable prices. They are entirely self reliant in grapes, all of which are grown in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. The vineyards are closer to the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, a range whose elevation and snow-covered peaks are even more dramatic than the Sierra Cantabria range to the north. Martínez Alesanco's Blanco is made from equal parts Viura, White Tempranillo, Malvasi...

Can Mayol, which bottles under the trademarked name "Loxarel," is a winery that has farmed organically for 15 years. The Mitjan family, owners of Can Mayol, also employ some biodynamic treatments. They keep animals, including chickens, a horse, and a donkey named Garnatxa. While the focus is on "Brut Nature" (no dosage added) sparkling wine production, they also produce some very interesting still wines. In their chalky, high-altitude vineyards (above 2,400 feet for their highest vines, among the highest in the Penedès D.O.), Xarel-lo, Macabeo, Parellada...

90 points Vinous: "Pale yellow. Fresh pear and honeydew melon on the fragrant nose, along with a subtle floral nuance. Silky and open-knit, showing good depth and a touch of waxiness to the ripe orchard and citrus fruit flavors. The melon note comes back on a smooth, persistent finish that features a refreshing bitter orange zest flourish. (JR)" (03/2021)

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV Pedro Ximenez Solera 1927 is non-vintage, but does have some 1927 material in it. This is totally dark brown/amber with notes of figs, toffee, caramel syrup, molasses and coffee. It is dense, super sweet, intense, rich and an amazingly, unctuously textured, thick beverage to consume slowly and introspectively after a meal. Drink now through 2050, or even longer. (RP)" (11/2015) 96 points Wine Enthusiast: "One of the world's best PX wines is Solera 1927, the pride of Alvear. Whatever solera stocks went in...

Native South African Bryan MacRobert grew up in a farming family and has been quietly making some of that country's best value wines. He fell in love with a girl from Rioja as well as the region's wines (we forget in which order) but quickly became fascinated with the inimitable terroirs and endless potential for wines in the region. A proponent not only of organic viticulture, but also a strong believer in the importance of legacy organically cultivated vines on top quality sites, Bryan is picky about where he grows and sources vines. The winemaking is ...

Toca cava is made with organically grown grapes from the heart of Cava country in the Penedes. This crisp, clean cava with the indigenous grapes of the region: 50% Macabeo, 35% Parellada and 15% Xarel.lo. Aged anywhere from 12-15 months, this is very refreshing with tasty fruit and a dry finish. "Toca'' means to touch or to play and this is a deliciously playful sparkling wine for any occasion.

2020 Txomin Etxaniz Txakolina Getariako
Top Pick!
92 points Decanter: "Made in the classic style, this blend of the two main Txakoli grapes – 85% Hondarrabi Zuri, 15% Hondarrabi Beltza – is fresh and lean with a spiky acidity punctuated by green apples, lime and a fizz of sherbet lemons. There’s a delightful tingle of petillance which sets it off nicely and introduces a slight mineral note on the finish. It cries out for oysters. (CW)" (06/2021) 92 points Vinous: "Limpid, green-hued straw. Taut and sharply focused on the nose, displaying vibrant citrus zest, quince and floral scents and a chalky miner...

Finca Garabato is a parcel of Valtea's oldest wines. You will notice that it says "2o Año" on the label, which refers to the fact that it ages in tank on its lees for a year following fermentation. This gives the wine a lovely richness, which really ramps up the flavor and textural qualities of the wine. Still refreshing, only richer than the regular Valtea bottling and ready to take on a meal.

91 points James Suckling: "Pretty nose of lemon blossom, white lavender, apricot and melon. Some anise, too. It’s medium-bodied with fresh acidity. Clean and bright expression. Vegan. Drink now." (02/2021) K&L Notes: Vinos del Viento is our most recent addition to our Direct import portfolio from Spain. It is a project that focuses on Garnacha and Cariñena (Grenache and Carignan) from the region that is the origin for both varieties, Aragon. All of the DO’s of Aragon are represented in the portfolio; Campo de Borja, Calatayud, Carinena and Somontano....

Petillant naturel, aka "pet nat" is here to stay, and this is our favorite Spanish rendition of this popular sparkling wine style. The "Apel" is a Xarel-lo based methode ancestrale, allowed to naturally ferment prior to being bottled and then fermented fully dry, possessing just the right amount of sugar while in bottle to convert into trapped CO2. The resulting wine is dry, expressive, elegantly textured and more-ish as can be! Can Mayol, which bottles under the trademarked name "Loxarel," is a winery that has farmed organically for 15 years. The Mitjan...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The non-vintage Dry Amontillado Los Arcos Solera Reserva reveals a medium amber hue along with a nutty, honeyed, dry personality with great acid...The portfolio of under $25 a bottle selections represents remarkable value for their complex, well-made personalities. Lustau includes a bottling date code as purchasers would want to buy Finos and Manzanillas as young as possible. It is difficult to describe the glories of sherry, but I’ll try. These Solera Reservas are all great reference points at a low price point ...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The eponymous 2016 Tricó is a classic Albariño from 25- to 35-year-old vineyards on poor granite soils that give low yields. The full clusters are pressed, then the juice is let to settle before fermenting at low temperature with neutral yeasts. This stays at least one year in tank before it's bottled. These are serious and subtle wines, not exuberant or showy, with good ripeness and very high compensating acidity, but the wines don't feel acidic. This has the advantage of time and has developed further complexit...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The sparkling Clàssic Penedès 2015 Refugi, a brut nature that is completely dry, is the first wine they produced after five generations growing grapes in a haven (refugi in Catalan) in the middle of their vineyards. It's mostly Xarello with 10% Chardonnay, part fermented in new 500-liter French oak barrels and then refermented in bottle, where it was kept with the lees for a minimum of 20 months. It has a nice balance between fruit and more developed aromas and flavors of spice and yeast, and it has a balanced, t...

2020 La Caña Albariño Rías Baixas
Top Pick!
92 points Vinous: "Light, vivid yellow. Fresh, mineral-tinged pear, nectarine, melon and floral scents are complemented by hints of honey, lemon curd and chamomile. Silky and expansive on the palate, offering energetic orchard and citrus fruit flavors that tighten up and turn spicier through the back half. Finishes very long and nervy, with repeating florality and a spicy jolt of candied ginger. (JR)" (06/2021)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The first Albariño to be bottled is the 2019 Leirana, which I was also able to compare with the 2018 vintage. It's the one that represents the character of the Valle del Salnés, as it's produced with grapes from different villages across the valley. This ferments in a combination of 60% stainless steel vats and 40% oak foudres, where the wine matures for six months. Contrary to what I've seen at other addresses, this 2019 is very closed and backward; it's a vintage with very high acidity, citrus and salt. This is...

The Bodegas Casa Monte Pío is a small family winery that was established in 1979. It is located in the Salnes Valley which is considered the heart of the Rias Baixas region. The vines are planted in primarily granitic sandy soils and they are farmed organically with some biodynamic principles. They are obsessed with the healthy of their soils and vines. This obsession is seen in the ripeness and purity of their fruit which is contrasted by the classic mineral salinity which the region is known for.

Do Ferreiro is a benchmark Albariño. Every year, it delivers the goods, showing a degree of aromatic complexity, nervy minerality, and pure intensity of flavor that always makes it stand out from the rest. Delicious upon release, it is also one of the few Albariños to improve in bottle for up to a decade (maybe longer?) beyond the vintage year. There is bright fruit intermingling with the classic Do Ferreiro salty/smoky mineral bite. Enjoy this wine on its own or with all types of seafood.

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Coming from older vines, the 2015 Gelida Brut Gran Reserva is a blend of 35% Xarel·lo, 25% Macabeo, 20% Parellada, and 20%Chardonnay that spent 40 months on lees before bottling. Its more golden color is followed by a beautiful notes of golden apples, orange blossom, brioche, and honeysuckle. It's rich, has beautiful depth of fruit, good purity, and a clean finish. It's another terrific, richer example of Cava to drink over the coming 4-6 years." (09/2019) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Apricot and tangerine flavors are set on the f...

This is a very special Albariño, very small production (1120 bottles produced!). You might have noticed that it is labeled Galicia. This is a single vineyard, one hectare, located near the town of A Cañiza, which is not part of any Galicia DO. It is located between Rias Baixas and Ribeiro, and the wine tastes just like that. It has the precision, cut and minerality of the former and carries the weight, aromatics and forwardness of the later. The grapes are farmed organically with some biodynamics, indigenous yeast fermentation and bottles with low sulfur...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Viña Gravonia Blanco comes from a rainy, cool and challenging vintage when the grapes didn't reach the perfect ripeness the 2012 (that I tasted next to it) displayed. It has citrus notes (orange peel, yuzu) and an herbal twist, balsamic with the unmistakably white López de Heredia aroma of mushrooms that you smell as soon as you enter their ancient cellars. It's quite pale, and the palate is sharp and austere, quite light but with the pungent flavors and a long and tasty finish. This is a relatively simp...

Albarino is the perfect summer white, but its naturally crisp acidity and peachy citrus flavors make it enjoyable year-round as an aperitif or paired with a variety of foods, particularly shellfish and seafood. It hails from the Rias Baixas zone of Galicia, on the northwest coast of Spain. Walk through any given fishing village along the "rias" (fjords) in this beautiful, cool, maritime-influenced region and you will find fresh grilled pulpo (octopus) vendors at every corner! 92 points Wine & Spirits: "Juan García Jarana, the motorcycle magnate of Jerez, sells a portion of his soleras to Lustau for this delicate Oloroso. It starts with notes of candied almonds, coconut palm syrup and caramel. The hint of salinity lends complexity and freshness, without diminishing that delicate, pleasing sweetness." (06/2009) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Just add this oloroso to the growing list of excellent Sherries from Lustau. This one is tellingly nutty on the nose, thus the hazelnut and walnut flavors are expected as they become part of...

93 points Wine & Spirits: "Extremely dry, this austere Amontillado comes from the white chalky albariza soils of the famed Macharnudo vineyard. It aged under flor for about eight years, and then spent eight more years aging oxidatively before being bottled. At first, it shows only the classic flavors of iodine and salt, with enchanting sea breeze notes. You have to wait for the fruit flavors to emerge, notes of roasted white fruit and nuts emerging in the midst of its cool flavors. Only for fans of super-dry Sherry, this is ideal for mojama, cured tuna b...

An incredible 8-10 year average age Manzanilla, the Aurora is our newest Manzanilla and one of our more exciting Sanluqueño offerings in quite a while! A blend of two different soleras: one in barrio bajo which contributes umami driven savoriness and the other in barrio alto which lends a round richness, this is a Manzanilla that satisfies and clearly is punching beyond its weight class. Aromas of flor and tarragon lead to a lovely appley palate with surprising textural weight and length. A must try for fans of the inimitable dry Sherries of Sanlucar de...

Founded in 1882, Roger Goulart is in the village of San Esteve, province of Barcelona. A quintessential Cava producer, Goulart pioneered the traditional method sparkling wine production in Spain. Xarel·lo is a grape of character and structure, which makes it suitable for long aging cavas. Made from organically grown grapes. *Organic*

95 points Wine & Spirits: "Inocente is Valdespino’s flagship, a wine from the Macharnudo Alto vineyard, where the soil is pure white albariza. It ferments in 600-liter wooden casks without added yeasts, a practice that has become increasingly rare in Jerez. The intensity of the wine’s salinity is remarkable—iodine and salt—coming together with ripe white fruit, scents of nuts and exotic spices. The structure is dry and austere, like drinking the juice of stones. This will last for a decade in the cellar, but it’s impossible to hold onto a bottle if there...

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1946 Don PX Convento Seleccion produced with Pedro Ximenez grapes dehydrated under the sun at the time of the Second World War, was only bottled in September 2011. This is an extreme wine, my first descriptor was ultra-mega-super concentrated. It is unbelievably powerful, both in the nose and the palate, full of umami, with sweet cinnamon, Christmas cake, camphor, petrol, lemongrass, Belgian chocolate and butter. Incredibly complex and rich, sweet, balanced and smooth in the palate, it is both very sweet and...

Reliable and *Good Value* (JH)" (04/2016) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Talking about which, the NV Tio Pepe Fino is an icon of Sherry wine. Produced from Palomino grapes aged in the Tio Pepe solera for an average of four years under flor. This lastest saca shows a lovely mix of almond flavors, salt and white fruit, all melding into the wine’s deep mineral notes. It’s substantial enough to serve in the company of blackened redfish." The result puts the sweetness of the PX in front, with flavors of plum jam and tobacco. The salinity of the Oloroso brings freshness and fine minerality that play softly in the background. Caramelized citrus, honey, salted peanuts, hints of blue cheese, and tons of spice notes all flow to a powerful yet elegant sherry that has bright acidity and a beautiful finish. This release can be thought of as a very old Fino where the flor has died and sunk to the bottom of the barrel, exposing the wine to oxygen and oxidation, which concentrates the wine (and raises the alcohol)." Juanjo Tellaetxe Tantaka grew up in a remote river valley in the Basque province of Araba. As a child Juanjo would walk with the shepherds as they followed their flocks through the valley. His family has lived for generations in Araba, the family cemetery is in the same river canyon as Juanjo’s vineyards. The steep mountains protect the valley from the harsh coastal winds blowing off of the Atlantic. The valley is humid and cool most of the year creating long hang times for the grapes. (JM)" (10/2013) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Smooth and sweet, like a cream Sherry is supposed to be. On the nose, this one easily shifts from ripe apricot and peach fruit to nuts and saline.
