A blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca & Tinta Roriz, this is a perfect entry point into the dry reds from the Douro Valley. Medium bodied with red fruit tones, soft tannins that firm up on the finish.

Perched above the Dão river itself as it snakes through its granite valleys, the Adega de Penalva is one of the leading cooperatives in the area, boasting around a thousand member growers. It’s important to note, though, that the average holding per member amounts to barely over a hectare. 40% Touriga Nacional, 30% Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), and 30% Jaen (Mencía). Hand-harvested, fully destemmed and aged in a combination of stainless steel and concrete tank.

Sidonia de Sousa is a member of a group of Portuguese wineries that celebrate the baga grape and have come to be known as the "Baga Friends." This wine is 100% Baga and, according to the winery, "applying the Dujac-style in its fermentation (whole cluster pressed), the often fierce Baga grape lends way to a wonderful sweet middle fruit, smooth, earthy and ripe with a superb future."

92 points Wine Spectator: "Subtle, with a perfumy profile of cinnamon, powdered ginger, hazelnut husk and toasted sesame notes leading the way, backed by mouthwatering date and dried fig details and a lengthy finish. Drink now. (JM)" (06/2018) K&L Notes: Sweet, woody, spicy fruitcake and cinnamon reveal themselves on the nose. On the palate, the flavors are wonderfully balanced, no surprise given that the average age of the wine here is actually 15 years and not 10. Since there is no category for 15 year tawnies, Kopke simply chooses to label it as a 1...

Herdade do Rocim is located in the lower Alentejo region (southern Portugal). This property got its start in 2000 focusing primarily on local grapes like Aragonez, Touriga Nacional and Alicante Bouschet. They also work with several international grapes like Cabernet and Syrah, which is becoming more common in the Alentejo region. Catarina Viera and her team strive to create wines that are elegant, complex and strong. She is inspired by her love and respect for her grandparents, her father and her family, her connection with nature, and a true and unwaver...

92 points Wine & Spirits: "A 75/25 blend of red-skinned baga and white bical, this is a rich sparkler that brings to mind a shellfish broth with its vibrant salinity, and a raspberry mousse with its supple, refreshing fruit flavors. It’s creamy, with plenty of acidity and bubble to finish on a lovely, clean fragrance. Pour it with grilled langoustines or other rich shellfish." (02/2019) K&L Notes: A blend of red Baga and white Bical grapes, this is a fantastic, very low dosage (this is DRY!) rosé sparkler. Filipa Pato learned from Mr. Bairrada himself,...

Located in a region with strong wine-growing traditions dating back to the pre-Roman occupation, the vineyards of Quinta de Arcossó are installed on a hillside with convex exposure south to 400 meters altitude and with about 20% slope. In the soil of granitic origin, they grow carefully selected and adapted species of the region. All of the grapes are chosen by hand and all the wine is moved by gravity, no mechanical pumps are used anywhere in the winery. This combination of planning and meticulous care in the vineyards and the winery results in wine tha...

The coastal, cool Atlantic influenced region of Bairrada has a strong tradition in producing Champagne method sparkling wines. As this rosé from Sidonio de Sousa shows, these are serious sparklers! A nose of blood oranges and red berries leads to a nicely dry, restrained palate, with a soft bead and delicious flavors. This truly hits the spot.

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a new venture for this producer, who is based in Vinho Verde. A blend of the classic Dão grapes, the wine is rich, packed with black fruits and densely structured. It does also have a more stylish side, showing restraint in the tannins and celebrating a fine balance. (RV)" (12/2019)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV 10 Year Old Tawny Port was bottled in 2014 with 105.23 grams per liter of residual sugar. Easily the 10 with the most weight in the Fladgate group's lineup this issue, it is a rather powerful 10 year old Tawny with plenty of pop, the biggest and baddest of the trio (Fonseca, Croft and this). There is very fine concentration of flavor for a 10 year old Tawny. If I had a quibble, the alcohol shows at times, especially early on and rather notably when drunk a little too warm. (Around 60 degrees Fahrenheit is ...

A blend of Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, and Touriga Franca. From the producer "The wine is dark purple in color with an electric pink rim. On the nose the wine has aromas of fresh blackberry, dark cherry, black plum and blueberry, with secondary notes of violets, purple lilacs, cracked pepper and dried herbs. On the palate the wine is medium in body with pleasant acidity, fresh dark fruit, medium tannin, and a fruit driven finish. The perfect everyday red."
Price: $12.99

91 points Wine & Spirits: "Light amber-tawny in color, this wine is delicately balanced between freshness and age. There’s brisk, tart peach flavor along with more mature tones of pale berries and woodsy mushrooms. Hints of tobacco smoke add to the wine’s elegance." (12/2015) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Racy and fresh, with detailed green fig, dried cherry, incense and hazelnut notes. Offers a long, focused finish. (JM)" (06/2018) Wine Enthusiast: "This hits the sweet spot between fruit and wood-aging flavors. The red fruit tones have just begun to ra...

94 points James Suckling: "Beautiful, traditional, unfiltered LBV with sweet berry, bark, wet-earth and black-cherry aromas that follow through to a medium to full body with round, creamy tannins and a fruity finish. Medium sweet. A gorgeous young port. Drink or hold." (11/2020)

1981 Kopke Colheita Port 375ml
New!
93 points Wine Spectator: "A warm, inviting style, with brown bread, toasted almond, powdered ginger and green tea notes leading the way. The green tea edge lingers longest through the focused, slightly taut finish. Starts slow, but adds zip and length with air. Drink now. (JM, Web Only-2017)" 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1981 Colheita Tawny Port comes in with 150 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is lovely, dark, burnished and unctuous. From a rather poor vintage year, this still shows well, demonstrating yet again that you can't...

The German Family named Kopke came from Hamburg to Lisbon in 1636. Two years later, in 1638, Christiano Kopke established himself in Oporto, as merchant and exporter of Portuguese products, and he started the export of Portuguese wines already produced in the region, as part of his business. When the Wine - then known as Portwine - was recognized, the House of Kopke which is today the oldest Portwine's export firm, was one of the leaders in the field. Through many generations, the company was run by several members of Kopke's family, obtaining an excelle...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Beautifully perfumed, this is a ripe and structured wine. It has fine dusty tannins, intense blackberry fruits and a dark-licorice aftertaste. Acidity keeps the wine fruity and fresh although with those firm tannins, it will need time. Drink from 2027." (10/2017) 92 points Wine Spectator: "This starts with a generous feel, offering blueberry and plum reduction notes, but zips up nicely through the back end, picking up graphite and açai berry accents. Best from 2028 to 2040. (JM)" (10/2017) 92 points James Suckling: "A very...

95 points James Suckling: "The aromas to this beautiful tawny port are saturated with burnt orange peel, caramel, candied fruit and hints of honey-coated nuts. Full-bodied, very fruity and dense with intense nut and mahogany flavors. Hints of sultanas, chocolate and coffee. Extremely creamy, long and flavorful. Delicious all the way. Better served slightly chilled. " (06/2019) 94 points Wine & Spirits: "A complex and satisfying Tawny, this sits on the cusp of maturity with freshness continuing to infuse its deepening flavors. That freshness arrives in ...

100 points James Suckling: "OMG. This is really the most amazing young Taylor's I have ever tasted. Full-bodied and lightly sweet with super power and intensity. So racy and focused. Yet this has such muscle and intensity. Needs at least eight years to show you everything it has to offer. Drink in 2025." (05/2018) 98 points Wine Enthusiast: "Ripe, structured while also fruity, this intense, perfumed Port is opulent while also elegant. Its tannins and great fruit are finely integrated and are rich with potential. Black fruits, berries and a juicy aftert...

92 points John Gilman: "The Rare Wine Company’s New York Malmsey is a bit darker in color than the Boston Bual, and carries closer to five percent residual sugar. The wine is quite a bit deeper-pitched aromatically than the Bual, offering up a mix of brown sugar, pain épice, orange peel, gentle herbal tones, dried cherries and a nice dollop of rancio in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and quite broad-shouldered, with a fine core and lovely interplay of acidity and sweetness on the long and well-balanced finish. " (01/2014)...

91 points Wine Spectator: "Has great elegance and harmony, and should continue to improve for many years. Medium ruby-red, with very fresh plum aromas, medium-bodied, with very delicate fresh fruit flavors, lively acidity and a delicate finish. (Web-1989)" Jancis Robinson: "Rich and raisiny. Light nose. More than a hint of those cough sweets - Fisherman’s Friend - about it. Fully mature. 19/20 points (JR)" (07/2007)
Price: $224.99

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Aged in amphorae, the wine was made naturally with wild yeast. The result is a fine textured, fruity wine with a strongly juicy character as well as light tannins. The wine should be deliciously ready from 2021." (08/2020) K&L Notes: Located in the Lower Alentejo region in the southern half of Portugal, between Vidigueira and Cuba, lies the estate of Herdade do Rocim. Vinification occurred in amphora (large clay pots) without temperature control. Indigenous yeasts were used during fermentation and there was no tampering with...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Sandeman's long-standing reputation for aged tawny Port is confirmed by this wine. It is poised between fresh fruit and spice, dried dates and a generous golden glow. The wine is at its peak and ready to drink. (RV)" (01/2020) 91 points Wine Spectator: "A bright style, with ginger, singed orange peel, pecan, flan and persimmon flavors that are slightly higher pitched than most tawnies. Ends with fresh cut and focused drive. Drink now. (JM)" (06/2018) Jancis Robinson: "Pale-medium tawny amber. Orange peel and spirity, brand...

98 points Decanter: "From a single estate where a quarter of the vines are more than 80 years old: soft and seamless, boasting waves of dates, dried figs, brazil nuts and toasted almonds. Suave silky texture and wonderful savoury- sweet length. Supremely good. (RM)" (11/2017) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Old gold in color, this is the most complete style of aged tawny. The long barrel aging (in old barrels) has given concentration, a touch of oxidation and a wonderful spicy character. It is rich, luscious and beautifully ready to drink. (RV)" (02/2019) ...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Tinto Quinta de Saes is a blend of 30% each of Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro, 25% Jaen and the rest Tinta Roriz. It was aged for 18 months in well-used French barriques (at least eight years old). It comes in at 13% alcohol. Showing some stuffing this year, this value-level red is also possessed of good structure and ripe fruit. It throws off plenty of flavor, plums and blueberries with some strawberry around the edges, but always in a dry and controlled fashion. This does have some structure, but it's made to ...

Textura da Estrela is sourced from vineyards in Vila Nova de Tázem, subregion Serra da Estrela. Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain range in Portugal, but most of us in the US will be more familiar with the sheep milk cheese that has the same name. This is a traditional field blend that includes Touriga Nacional (30%), Jaen (20%) and Alfrocheiro (15%) and many more. The soils are granite and vineyards are currently being converted to organic.

Unlike many wines from the region, a significant portion of whole clusters are employed in the the fermentation, producing a lovely, complex red wine. *Natural Wine*

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Colheita Tawny Port was bottled in 2018 with a long cork and approximately 90 grams of residual sugar. Showing a bit more firmness than the 2007 but not quite its seductive texture, this an easy tawny that is slightly deeper than a typical 10 but not really approaching a 20 in quality. Which you like better is mostly a matter of taste, but I liked the little bit of extra concentration here, as compared to the 2007. (MS)" (07/2018) Jancis Robinson: "Winter 2003/04 was very dry but fears about lack of su...

(RM)" 90 points Wine & Spirits: "A finely blended Port, this has a bristle of tannins up front, melding their chocolate richness with dried fruit flavors, ending clean and sweet. The wine’s lasting spice places it with a savory pumpkin pie." (12/2017) Wine Enthusiast: "This familiar brand exhibits the lush Fonseca style. Tannins ...

This Bual is a medium rich Madeira, quite dark in color and much appreciated as an accompaniment to desserts. Five years in oak casks have given this distinctive Madeira great concentration and flavor and a powerful albeit mellowed bouquet.

At 20 bucks, it’s a terrific, forward, sexy Port offering lots of currants, raisins, candied olives, and dried herb aromas and flavors. It’s worth buying." (03/2018) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV Black Ruby Reserve Porto is mostly Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Tinto Cão aged in an equal mixture of oak and stainless steel. It com...

95 points Decanter: "Perfumed kid glove and vanillin oak, with dried mint to the nose and attack suggesting an effusive palate; but the palate is emphatically structural. Aged in 400-litre oak barrels (80-90% new), tight-knit, textural tannins contain the brooding spicy blackcurrant and ripe, juicy cherry and berry core. Chiselled, with a sense of mineral, dry extract and firm under-pinning, this well-focused keeper may warrant a higher score in time, once the tannins integrate. 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Cedro do Noval, a Duriense appellation because of the 30% Syrah, also has 30% Touriga Nacional, 25% Touriga Franca, 10% Tinta Roriz and 5% Tinto Cão. It was aged for 18 months in French oak of varying ages (only 25% new). Another gorgeous Cedro, often one of the nice value points in Noval's lineup, this is silky and flavorful, with mid-palate finesse and a very fresh conclusion. It is a lovely 2015, a little understated, but it is filled with fruit flavor, while always retaining its freshness. This is is...

96-98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Taylor’s Vintage 2011 has a multifaceted, Pandora’s Box of a nose that is mercurial in the glass: cassis at first before blackberry and raspberry politely ask it to move aside, followed by wilted rose petals and Dorset plum. Returning after one 45 minutes that nose has shut up shop. The palate is sweet and sensual on the entry, plush and opulent, with copious black cherries, boysenberry and cassis fruit, curiously more reminiscent of Fonseca! It just glides across the palate with a mouth-coating, glyc...

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1997 Dow's Vintage Port (95WS, 94WE, 92ST, 90RP). Wine Spectator: "Warm and inviting, with a worn leather feel to the mix of dried anise, espresso, bittersweet cocoa, steeped fig and mulled currant notes, which move seamlessly together through the buckwheat-edged finish. There's plenty here to like now, but this has ample energy for additional development. (JM, Web Only-2017)"
