Domaine Hubert "K&L Exclusive" Pays d'Auge Vieux Calvados (750ml)
Top Pick!
Astrid Hubert has taken over her family's apple distillation business with a desire to bring Calvados into the modern generation. She wants to make her estate's brandy more fruit-forward and more feminine in style -- "After all, I am a woman!" she told us during our visit in 2013. There has never been an apple brandy this good on the American market at such an affordable price. The juicy apple flavor simply bursts on the first sip, the fruit taking front and center stage as the cider-like acidity helps balance out the richness of the wood. Try making a J...

The Havard brothers Michel and Hubert make cider from 30 different varieties of apples as well as small batches of calvados. The rarity here is that single casks are usually kept back when harvests are on the small side, so the fact that just under a 100 bottles made it stateside after aging for 20 years, makes this extra special. After fermenting 6 months on native yeasts it is then distilled in a 500 liter column still followed by 18 years in a 600 liter ex-Cognac cask. It is then bottled full proof, unblended and non chill-filtered. This is on the rar...

The Giard family has been producing Calvados in the Pays d'Auge for 11 generations. The Domaine du Montreuil orchard was planted on land formerly covered by the sea, and it exhibits a distinctive apple flavor. This Calvados offers a robust fruity nose, with woody undertones. Zesty qualities and apple blossom honey notes round out the palate and lead to a lively finish.

95 points Vinous: "Pinning down the term hors d’age is a moving target, but this bottling by Michel Huard stands at the older end, with a minimum of 10-year-old spirits, along with a significant percentage that is more than 25 years old. Golden-colored, it opens with a gorgeous, old-time nose - rustic in the best sense of the word. There’s woodiness here, from the nose to the finish, but it’s an attractive virtue, with deep and well-integrated. There’s balanced aromas and flavors of tarte tatin, with notes of pepper and even salted licorice. In the mouth...

Roger Groult 12 Year Old Calvados Pays d'Auge (750ml)
Back In Stock!
93 points, 2015 Ultimate Spirits Challenge: "Excellent, Highly Recommended. Tasting Notes: Bright on the nose, it is reminiscent of applesauce and white grapes. In the mouth it is spicy and complex with Meyer lemon, white flowers and deep clover honey. The play between savory and sweet is intriguing."
