The spectacular Kanosuke distillery melds tradition and innovation unlike any other in the world. Based a short drive from the southern city of Kagoshima, the prefecture is the heart of distillation in Japan. The heat and humidity of the southern Island of Kyushu create an environment much more suited for distillation than the long slow fermentations needed for high quality Sake. The famous Kozuru Sochu was created by Kanosuke Komasa and lays claim to being the first barrel aged Sochu in Japan. The distillery baring Komasa-sans name is the vision of his ...

99-100 points Decanter: "In 2021, ‘we had a nicely paced harvest... surely a very fortunate vintage for us, for Bolgheri,’ said Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta at the launch in London of the 2021 vintage of Sassicaia. Welcome rain in mid-August came at just the right time to save the harvest, and production ended up being slightly higher than in 2020. Around eight to 10 separate vinifications were made, fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and spontaneous malo. The wines were racked to second- and third-use barriques in December 2021, the...

96 points James Suckling: "Dried violets and lavender, cedar, cloves, vanilla and tobacco. Full body with ripe and chewy tannins, but this remains focused and dialed-in thanks to mouthwatering acidity. Not to mention beautiful blue fruit that comes to the surface, particularly on the long finish." (09/2018) 94 points Wine Advocate: "The Mazzei family was among the first to embrace the Gran Selezione category of high-end Chianti Classico. Their 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli shows the sharpness and detail that wine is supposed...

93 points James Suckling: "Dried apple and pineapple with hints of coconut, steel and some flint. Full-bodied and tight with intensity and power. This will open nicely with bottle age. Try after 2022." (07/2021) 92 points Vinous: "The 2019 Chardonnay is a unique wine, as it includes a fair amount of Viognier that adds pretty floral and tropical overtones. Apricot, mint, tangerine oil, chamomile and dried flowers all open nicely in the glass. (AG)" (01/2021)

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Vinified primarily in concrete with a small proportion of whole-bunch fermentation, there's a lifted, airy freshness to Gigognan's Clos du Roi that's consistent from vintage to vintage. A full-bodied blend of Grenache (70%), Mourvédre (20%) and Syrah (10%), it's packed with layers of succulent blackberry, cherry and plum flavors, edged by a stony, salty minerality. *Editors' Choice* (AI)" (11/2022) 93 points Wine Spectator: "A meaty wine, with converging flavors of earth, tar, violet and fruit, plus cranberry and cassis note...

Maxville has an incredible estate high in the mountains of Chiles Valley, a sub-AVA of Napa Valley, famed for its rugged, rocky soils and cooler growing temperatures from the 1,200ft+ elevation. Established back in 1974, this large property is over 1000 acres in total, but only 10% of that is planted to vines. The rest left as wild habitat, forest and a large lake. Winemaker Camille Benitah was born and raised in Bordeaux. She learned her craft at the La Tour Blanche school in Sauternes, and worked for several Chateaux around Bordeaux before moving to Na...

The incredible Dornoch Distillery is easily the most exciting new distillery operation in Scotland today. Run by brothers Phil & Simon Thompson, they understand the desires of true whisky lovers like few other distillers in the region. While their tiny distillery can only produce a handful of barrels a year, they're in the process of building a much more substantial plant and while we wait, they've built an excellent independent bottling operation known as Thompson Bros (Redacted Bros stateside.) This special whisky pays homage to their home region, a ...

95 points Decanter: "This deeply coloured wine has an inviting nose of dark cherry and chocolate. The palate is dense and rich, with mouth-coating blackberry fruit and layers of chocolate, savoury spice and gently chewy tannins. (2023 DWWA)" (06/2023) K&L Notes: Produced by the Union des Vignerons des Côtes du Rhône, the Boissy & Delaygue represents specific parcel selections from top growing areas overseen by the Union. 93 points Whisky Advocate: "The first thing you notice is the elegant fragrance of lychee, spring blossoms, lily, rosewater, and raspberry meringue. Deeper in, grassy notes with star fruit, kumquat, and kaffir lime leaves. The flavors offer perfection in their simplicity: silky honey, soft spices, crystalized pineapple, barley sugar, lemon, and orange. On the finish, the spices chatter on and on as the sweet citrus and honey fade in and out. One to cherish. 95 points James Halliday: "80/20% Awatere/Wairau Valley fruit; 10% goes into oak for ferment. Blackberry leaf, Thai basil and yellow guava. Blueberry flesh, fennel and chalk. The palate is weighted with ripe passionfruit, nectarine and honeysuckle. This is ripe and rich. It's densely packed and acidity trots in line, enabling a long, slippery finish. A hint of celery salt and raw cashew on the finish with a smattering of lacey skin texture. Lots of value here, for the price tag, and a memorable wine." Flavors of red currant-cranberry confiture and orange bitters wrap around cardamom spice, and a long, supple finish. (TP)" (10/2024) K&L Notes: A real wow factor wine, the 2023 Brick & Mortar Anderson Valley Pinot Noir is explosive on the nose and palate. 93 points Wine Advocate: "Composed of 39% Cabernet Franc, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cinsault, 10% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 6% Malbec, the 2020 Professor Black Pitch Black is layered with juicy red fruits without being overdone on the nose, offering layers of dusty florals and spiced plum. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers a fantastic balance with vibrant acidity and fine-grained tannins, showing plenty of life left in the wine before gliding to a long, complex finish. The wine matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, just under 20% new. ...
Xavier Vignon's greatest strength as a winemaker is his ability to establish long lasting and unique relationships with his partner winemakers and growers. For more than a few years, Vignon has made exciting and sumptuous modern wines but he has also indulged in a few unique and interesting projects along the way. One such project is what we call the vintage series. From those long-standing relationships, Xavier finds parcels of vintage wine from domaines that have been sitting on juice in both barrel and tank for extended periods of time. Sometimes d...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Violet-red to the eye, this wine has a bouquet of cassis, saddle leather and clove. It feels good in the mouth, offering flavors of blackberry, strawberry, chocolate-covered coffee bean and vanilla. Satin tannins dissolve into a soft rose-petal finish. (MD)" (07/2022) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Sweet oak, vanilla, cherry and bitter almond flavors converge in this muscular, balanced red. The oak still needs time to integrate, with ample fruit to offset it. The finish is long and compact. Tempranillo and Graciano. Best from 20...

The wonderful Glengoyne distillery is always one to keep an eye. Built in 1833, it was sold by Archiball Macllelan to the Lang Brothers where it remained until 1965 when it was purchased by a predecessor organization to Edrington Group. In 2003, it was sold to blenders and bottlers Ian Macleod and they've rightfully made Glengoyne a worldwide brand. They're famous for their sherried malt and it's rare to see a butt make it out of their warehouses under anyone else's label. That's why we were so excited to see this pop up and when we tasted it we knew we ...

90-92 points Jasper Morris: "Four plots making around 3ha. 80% in stainless steel and 20% in oak, sample prepared, actual blend will be before the harvest. A delightful very pale lime green. There is a little flesh apparent even on the nose from the age of the vines. Excellent tension behind, a searing chiselled white fruit, for once the old vine aspect really adds something rather than just making more concentrated. Dosage 8.3 g/l. More fruity than their whites. Blood orange with a touch of sweetness that I didn’t find in the white wines. Lime bonbon. Dusty spices on the finish, like fine-ground walnut skin. For decades now, our Kalinda private label has been providing K&L customers with awesome wines at a fraction of what they'd normally pay under the producers' mainstay labels. Naturally, no producer wants their wines on the market for less than what they'd usually sell for, so the trade-off is anonymity. This is a superb Cabernet-very elegant and user friendly already. Lots of sweet cassis and red fruit aromas that follow to the palate. No hard edges here-drink it young with a prime rib or steak dinner. Will cellar well for five plus years. clyde
93 points Vinous: "The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Unisson Grand Cru is a pure Chardonnay from Avize, blended from the 2016 and 2017 vintages. A most subtle nose allows glimpses of dried corn husk but stays subdued, because it all happens on the beautifully chalky palate. Depth becomes apparent with the first sip of this slender, taut, bright and lithe Champagne that delves and drives deep into chalk, adding slight yeasty autolysis and really fine mousse. Everything about this forsakes overtness in favor of depth, beautifully elegant with alluring, salty, ch...

Mas Codina is a 40-hectare estate in Alt Penedès which dates back to 1681. This Gran Reserva Cava was hand-harvested from 25- to 40-year-old vines and estate-bottled. Vines are planted in calcareous and sandy clay soils which keep the wine minerally and lively. Varietals include Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. 100% hand-riddled, it has spent over 30 months on its lees and is bottled with no dosage.

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "Winemaker Matt Dees is considered one of the best winemakers anywhere, and this blend is ample reason to believe the hype. Intense, focused and dry but rich aromas of dark fruit, roasted wood, crushed rocks and wild herb enliven the nose, while the palate is weighty yet expertly tense. Flavors of dried red fruit, peppery spice and milk chocolate float into the finish. Domaine Cherrier was founded in 1930. Since then four generations of the family have run the estate. The domaine has limestone and calcareous clay soils that wonderfully influence the character of the grapes grown there. The Sancerre is consistently delicious, with citrus, chalky minerality and light floral notes. Its dry finish complements seafood and cheese beautifully. 100 points Decanter: "I remember tasting Costanti’s 2019 Rosso di Montalcino in 2021 and thinking how Brunello-esque it was: the sturdy structure was almost uncharacteristic, yet it certainly boded well for the Brunello. Simply gloriously sculpted, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is indeed statuesque and stately. While it doesn’t give everything up all at once, it is gracious in its presentation. From chestnut forest and sweet earth, to anise and orange extract, the aromas are visceral, and boundless depths of wild red berries suffuse the palate. It vibr...

Signatory has long been one of the preferred independent bottlers on the market. For almost three decades now, we've been selling Signatory because their cask selection process is second to none in the industry. They also have a knack for building incredible collections of rare casks, so walking through their warehouse is an absolute dream. As you pass Bowmore from the 70s and Port Ellen, you'll stumble by Dallas Dhu and Rosebank. Yet it's some of the modern stocks that are most shocking! 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Sea air, toasted almond and subtle peat smoke mark the nose of this single malt. The palate opens assertively smoky and savory, mixing bacon and mesquite with almond, honey and spice. This was aged in ex-bourbon casks and finished in casks that previously held peated whisky. (KN)" (12/2021) K&L Notes: Old Pulteney, the brilliant distillery situated on Scotland's Northern coast, only makes unpeated malt. 93 points Vinous: "The 2018 Pinot Noir Estate Upper Picnic Block is eminently charming in its sweet-fruited, exuberantly spiced, medium-weight build. Layers of kirsch, raspberry sauce, cinnamon, cardamom and iodine mark a wine of sexiness and sensuality. Again, this is a style reflective of a different era for Neely. Growing season differences notwithstanding, the 2018 checks in at 14.1% alcohol, nearly two full degrees higher than the 2021 tasted alongside. I prefer this edition, as it’s still finessed but has more stage presence and inner harmony. The ...

(JM)" (09/2024) K&L Notes: Sourced from the Putnam Vineyard in the Annapolis sub-region of the northwest Sonoma Coast. It was aged 11 months in 31% new French oak. With a mix of Old World/New World style in its buttered orchard fruits, citrus blossom, charcoal, and melon aromas and flavors, it's medium to full-bodied, has good concentration, and its bright acidity keeps everything fresh, focused, and tight. This wine was made by Eric Fournier of Chateau Canon fame. Just when you think you've tasted every type of booze known to man, you discover that there are more regionally specific spirits being distilled in places you've never considered. The result is a clean and vibrant brandy that drinks like something in betwee...
