94 points James Halliday: "Hand picked from 2 very old vineyards, in Blewitt Springs and Clarendon, on sand and clay respectively. I have criticised earlier vintages of this wine as abstemious and ascetic. Grenache, after all, is a later ripener equipped with joyous fruit and (when made well) a jittery kit of briary tannins to confer a whiff of savouriness. And so it goes. Lots of whole-berry florals and juby red-fruit riffs. Complex hints of orange rind, sassafras, turmeric and clove, to boot. Warmth and mineral tannic rasp as an effortless whole. Delic...

Native South African Bryan MacRobert grew up in a farming family, and has been quietly making some of that country's best value wines. He fell in love with a girl from Rioja as well as the region's wines (we forget in which order) but quickly became fascinated with the inimitable terroirs and endless potential for wines in the region. A proponent not only of organic viticulture, but also a strong believer in the importance of legacy organically cultivated vines on top quality sites, Bryan is picky about where he grows and sources vines. The winemaking is...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "All Grenache brought up in demi–muids and aged on lees for 8 months, the medium ruby/purple hued color of the 2019 Cuvée Nicolas is followed by a killer bouquet of kirsch liqueur, savory spices, cured meats, and peppery garrigue. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and gorgeously textured, it has wonderful richness with no sensation of weight or heaviness. It’s another insane value from this team." (03/2021) K&L Notes: Jean-Marc Lafage has knocked it out of the park once again with this high-quality, low-cost stunner of a wine. Domaine...

99 points James Suckling: "Such attractive red-floral, stone and bracken aromas here with a red-plum and redcurrant edge, as well as pink grapefruit, blood orange and white pepper. The palate has a sleek and granular feel with a finely detailed style of tannin and a dried red-berry and cherry core. Leaf-like layers of tannin. Exquisite. Drink over the next eight years." (08/2021) 97 points Wine Enthusiast: "From the block next to the renowned High Sands vineyard, Ovitelli skips the oak in favor of 158 days on skins in large ceramic eggs. The result is ...

2019 Domaine de la Janasse "Chaupin" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I was able to taste the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin on two occasions, rating it one point higher on one of those as well. Incredible notes of red and black fruits, violets, scorched earth, ground pepper, and Provençal garrigue notes define the nose, and it’s a darker, richer, slightly more powerful wine than usual, while still showing the inherent elegance and finesse this cuvée always shows. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following 15-20. Don’t miss it! (JD) 98+" (11/2021) 98 points Wine Enthusiast: "This ...

95-97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Guigasse is my favorite of the trio, at least at this early stage. Full-bodied aromas and flavors of darker berries, violets, peppery herbs, and chocolate all emerge from this beauty, which is perfectly balanced and has a great mid-palate, silky tannins, and a great finish. This is 100% Grenache that was not destemmed and is brought up all in older demi-muids. While the Chapelle Saint Theodoric wines are made by Baptiste Grangeon of Domaine de Cristia, the wines are dramatically different in sty...

2019 Bosquet des Papes "A la Gloire de Mon Grand Père" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Almost all Grenache, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape A La Gloire De Mon Grand-Père comes from the La Gardiole lieu-dit and was aged 80% in demi-muids and 20% in foudre. Its deep purple/plum color is followed by a stunning array of black cherry, blackberry, and ripe strawberry fruits as well as candied flowers, orange blossom, and toasted spice. As with the old vine cuvée, the tannins have a firm edge and it's built with short-term cellaring in mind, yet the purity is brilliant, I love its balance, and this is just a stunning Grenache...

Alex Baer, proprietor, and winemaker for Allbaer has one of the more impressive resumes you'll ever come across. He got his start working in the Barossa Valley on South Australia working at Elderton winery. Elderton have some of the the oldest Shiraz vines in the region dating back to the 1860s. Upon returning to his home in Paso Robles he then worked for Guillaume Fabre of L'Aventure and Clos Selene. Next it was off to Napa Valley to work at Realm with Benoit Touquette, and then the icing on the cake, his dream job working at Sine Qua Non with Manfred K...

2019 Faethm "Fingers Crossed - Bien Nacido Vineyard" Santa Maria Valley Grenache
New!
Antonio Galloni comments on the winery in June 2021 for Vinous, "I was blown away by the wines I tasted with Nikolas and Julia Krankl this past summer. Working out of a tiny winery that is essentially in their backyard, the Krankls are making gorgeous, distinctive wines. The Krankls describe 2019 as a year with a long, cool growing season and a wide harvest window."

93-95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Looking at the 2019s, all of which are still aging in barrel, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Sablons can be thought of as the entry level Grenache. Destemmed and aged in older barrels, this round, mouth-filling, medium to full-bodied Grenache offers lots of red and black fruits as well as some meaty, spicy nuances. It will have plenty of up-front appeal. While the Chapelle Saint Theodoric wines are made by Baptiste Grangeon of Domaine de Cristia, the wines are dramatically different in style and are mostly not destemmed (the...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Grenache 2 2 Tango is terrific. A blend of 76% Grenache, 15% Graciano, and the rest Syrah, sourced from multiple sites throughout the Central Coast (mostly Ballard Canyon), it has a cool, lively, incredibly elegant style to go with textbook Grenache notes of red and blue fruits, ground pepper, and herbes de Provence. It has fabulous purity of fruit, and I’m a fan. Drink bottles over the coming 7-8 years." (09/2021)
Price: $39.95

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "There are two Grenache releases. First, the 2019 Grenache Lumiere Larner Vineyard comes from a site in Ballard Canyon and was destemmed and aged in 25% new French oak. Its ruby/translucent color is followed by a pretty, perfumed, medium-bodied Grenache offering supple tannins, wonderful purity, and notes of herbes de Provence, white pepper, and both red and black fruits. Seemingly part Grenache and part Pinot Noir, this seamless effort will keep for 7-8 years."

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Du Quet checks in as 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre brought up mostly in concrete, yet with 10% in old barrels. It's another heavenly, monster of a wine from this estate that boasts a dense ruby/plum color as well as a kaleidoscopic array of red and black fruits, Provençal garrigue, ground pepper, cured meats, and new saddle leather. Uber-rich, full-bodied, and incredibly concentrated, yet never heavy, it has a thrilling multi-dimensional texture, loads of tannins, and a heavenly finish. Hedonism...

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Grenaches De Pierre is a step up and has a wonderfully fresh, pure character as well as full-bodied aromas and flavors of black raspberries, morello cherries, new leather, herbes de Provence, and loamy earth. Pure, perfumed, and already complex, with incredible elegance, it's another gorgeous wine from this estate that can be enjoyed any time over the coming 15 to 20 years." (11/2021) 96 points Vinous: "Glistening ruby. An assertively perfumed bouquet evokes black raspberry, cherry compote, potpo...

94 points James Suckling: "A refined and beautiful red with blackberry and light chocolate aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, yet tight and polished. Linear, fine and dynamic at the end. Dried orange rind and dark fruit with stone at the finish. Please give this two or three years to soften. " (08/2021) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Gratallops is a village wine produced with grapes from different Gratallops vineyards, which are mentioned on the label, with a varietal breakdown of 87% Garnacha, 12% Cariñena and 1% white grapes (Garnac...

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Gallimardes reveals a dense purple/plum color as well as a ripe, decadent bouquet of ripe black cherries, fruit cake, ground pepper, and garrigue. This carries to a full-bodied 2019 revealing wonderful fruit, ripe yet building tannins, and a great finish. It shows the more savory, Provençal style of the vintage nicely and has beautiful fruit as well as a great finish. It's going to need 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for two decades." (11/2021) 96 points Vinous: "Pungent, spice-accented red and...

96 points Decanter: "Blackberry, star anise and juniper. Only medium-bodied for a Châteauneuf, but this has plenty of impact and intensity. Lovely bright acid line and sense of freshness from start to finish. Silky and voluptuous. (MW)" (10/2020) 93-95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Leading off the 2019 Châteauneuf du Pape, all of which were tasted from barrel, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Safres should equal or surpass the 2018 as it has the same level of elegance and finesse, yet even better mid-palate depth and concentration. It’s beautifully done and we...

2019 Domaine Pierre Usseglio "Cuvée Mon Aïeul" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "One of the top handful of wines in the vintage, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée De Mon Aïeul is all Grenache, from the different terroirs (one sand, one clay, and one limestone) that was 50% destemmed and aged all in older demi-muids. Reminding me of the 2007 with its incredible perfume of ripe black raspberries, strawberries, flowery incense, peppery and Provençal garrigue, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, expansive texture, gorgeous tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish. A wine of incredibly purity, pre...

Bid on this bottle of 2019 Fingers Crossed California Grenache. Antonio Galloni writes: "I was blown away by the wines I tasted with Nikolas and Julia Krankl this past summer. Working out of a tiny winery that is essentially in their backyard, the Krankls are making gorgeous, distinctive wines. The Krankls describe 2019 as a year with a long, cool growing season and a wide harvest window. Things were much more challenging in 2020. In addition to dealing with a pandemic and the threat of fire (that thankfully did not materialize), 2020 was extremely hot and dry. That resulted in dehydration on the vine, small berries and musts with high skin to juice ratios. On the plus side, there was better ripeness in the stems. Readers who have not tasted these wines owe it to themselves to do so, as they are quite special."
Starting Bid: $180.00

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2019 Sine Qua Non "Distenta I" California Grenache ((98-100JD), 98RP). Jeb Dunnuck: "Not yet bottled, the 2019 Grenache Ditenta 1 (which is the new name for the classic Grenache of the estate and means “unlabeled” in Latin) sports a dense purple hue as well as a flamboyant, exotic, complex nose of black raspberries, flowery incense, pepper, and spice. It’s incredibly layered and elegant, yet still has classic Sine Qua Non opulence and texture. It’s a brilliant Grenache in the making." (08/2021)
Starting Bid: $660.00

92 points James Suckling: "A solid red, showing blueberry and blackberry aromas and flavors with purple fruit, walnuts and dust. It’s medium-bodied with tight tannins and a fresh, vivid finish." (09/2020)
