Here's a sparkling wine brand with a theme we can all get behind for the New Year: Onward! Faith Armstrong Foster is the winemaker behind the wines of Onward. This rare sparkling Malvasia Bianca was handled gently, and transferred from tank to bottle by gravity. Indeed, the gentle process is a must for "Pét-Nat," as the wine is still fermenting. Thus, the wine makes its own natural bubbles, without additional dosage. Handle with care, too, after opening, as the bottles contain a slight amount of lees sediment, to complete fermentation and add complexity...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Lively citrus flavors are nicely tempered by almond and bread-dough nuances in this elegant, well-balanced and rich-tasting wine. It offers more than fresh fruit, adding aged-on-the-lees complexity for a very tempting expression. (JG)" (11/2020) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Lithe and delicately balanced, with vibrant lemon custard, blanched almond and steely citrus tones that take on richness and speed on the long finish. (TF)" (11/2020) 91 points Connoisseurs Guide: "With very good reason, we have high expectations when Sch...

Wine & Spirits: " A new year can hardly pass without another radiant offering from Lance Winters and Alameda-based St. George Spirits. Bruto Americano is an American aperitivo, bittered largely with gentian root, while California-grown Seville oranges and buckthorn bark provide orange and woodsy notes. The flavor may recall Campari (with a hint of Aperol citrus)—as does the color, a lush vermillion derived from cochineal, as Campari used to be—but the soothing texture and complexity puts it in a category of its own. BA’s gorgeous Italian futurist label s...

Goldeneye in Anderson Valley has long been considered one of the benchmark producers of the region. Their Pinot Noirs have been consistent best sellers here at K&L for at least a decade. When we were offered some of their vintage Brut Rosé, a wine typically reserved for winery direct purchase, we jumped at the chance and weren't disappointed! Winemaker's Notes: "Anderson Valley has earned acclaim for the complexity and distinctiveness of its sparkling wines. Made from our very best blocks of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, our vibrant and alluring Goldeneye B...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The current release of the NV Brut Rosé is made up mainly of fruit from the 2015 vintage and is a blend of 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay. It was made with about nine grams per liter dosage and was disgorged in March of 2019. Pale salmon-pink in color, it has a lively nose of red berries, crushed stone, musk melon, floral hints and citrus peel and a bright and fresh palate with loads of perfumed red berries and energetic mousse, finishing long and uplifted. (EB)" (09/2020) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This mo...

91 points Connoisseurs Guide: "72% Pinot Noir; 28% Chardonnay. Here is an exceptionally well-focused Rosé that, while deftly infused with a keen streak of yeasty richness, conveys continuous, fresh cherry fruit from start to finish and comes up a winner for its lively balance and its lovely finesse. It is long on effusive, very fine bubbles that simply refuse to quit and shows no small degree of complexity in a mannerly, neatly measured mix that, at every turn, is marked by exacting champenization, and it is wholly free of the vinous astringency to which...

Heidrun is a meadery in Point Reyes Station that specializes in dry and crisp sparkling meads produced from single-varietal flower honeys. All of their meads are produced in a Champagne method--complete with riddling, disgorgement, and secondary fermentation--and are serious, Champagne-inspired sparklers with delicious honey flavors. Their orange blossom mead is one of their biggest in style, full of a rich orange flavors. Like most of their meads, however, this sparkler is still elegant with delicate citrus aromas and a slight mineral finish. Springtime...

Wine Enthusiast: "The color of Versilia Peach roses, this sparkler offers quiet aromas of strawberry, plum and saltine cracker. The palate is delicate, showing strawberry, apple, biscuits and lemon juice flavors on a soft, fine mousse. It finishes on a squeeze of lemon and baguette, with a hint of watermelon. (FA)" (12/2018) Wine Spectator: "Lively, with light-bodied cherry, spice and lemon flavors. Drink now. Winery Notes: "The NV Spark is a blend of 55% Pinot Noir, 37% Chasselas Doré and 8% Pinot Blanc, from 31-year-old vines. It is an "ultra brut," although this particular bottling is made using forced carbonation instead of méthode Champenois. Medium to deep cherry-pink in color, it has aromas of cantaloupe, strawberries, raspberries and lemon peel with notes of stone and toast. The palate is dry with citrus and red berry flavors, spritely mousse and a refreshing, mineral-driven finish."

90 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Just as it did in last year’s survey of sparkling wines, Scharffenberger’s Brut Rosé once again impresses with its fine combination of deep, slightly juicy, very well-stated fruit and integral autolysis. It is a deftly balanced wine with a steady, very long-lasting stream of tiny bubbles, and, although we continue to be happily surprised at the number of affordable sparklers that merit 'Good Value' recommendation, this wine’s buoyancy, intricate layering and careful crafting earns it an especially enthusiastic nod as nothin...

A particularly rare California sparkling wine produced by Don Baumhefner who had been inspired by late disgorged Bollinger to let his wines rest "en tirage" for years. The San Francisco Chronicle's Esther Mobley fell in love with Baumhefner's 1992 and was excited to report in December 2017 that he had released another wine he discovered in Lake County that had come from a vineyard in Carneros. Mobley writes: "The 2010 Blanc de Blancs smells heady, wafting sweet bread dough. It’s rich, nutty and creamy, and more direct than Baumhefner’s 1990 and 1992 vint...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This inaugural release is stunning and incredibly impressive - a wine well worth stocking up on for the price and quality. A beautiful jasmine aroma leads to marzipan, peach and cherry flavors as lively acidity envelopes the palate. It's a blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir. *Ranked #5, Top 100 Cellar Selections of 2020, Editors' Choice* (VB)" (08/2020) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Creamy and vibrant, with apple and snappy strawberry flavors that offer a dash of brioche on the finish. A very exciting traditional method (bottle fermented) Chenin Blanc from old vines at the revered Jurassic Park Vineyard. John and Alex at Birichino never stop experimenting...but thankfully their failure rate seems to be just about zero! An early pick kept the acids high for this sparkler and that in turn balances the richness and power of these 40+ year old vines. Winery Notes: "Honeyed, saline, savory and immensely persistent, the 2016 Chenin was the product of an early September pick at a very modest sugar level, suitable for sparkling wine. Fermentat...

A very impressive new sparkling wine project in Orgeon who's wines absolutely stunned me with their quality and depth. Corollary make small amounts of wine but are clearly very good at what they do. These are up there with some of the very best domestic sparkling wines I have tasted and will give plenty of high-end Champagnes a run for their money too! Cheers! (Ryan Woodhouse - Domestic Wine Buyer, K&L Wines) Winery Notes: "Cuvée One brings together multiple soil types, grape varieties, and climates to create a multi-layered, nuanced wine. This classic ...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "A new offering from the producer, this blends together Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it offers sleek flavors of strawberry puree and brioche that benefit from crisp acidity and stony texture. Balanced and fresh, it finishes in lemon peel and flowers. (VB)" (11/2019) 90 points Decanter: "Lithe and light, this delightful blend of Pinot Noir (65%) and Chardonnay reveals ripe red fruit and perfumed floral notes. 90 points Wine Spectator: "This sleek sparkler is expressive for its floral apple and toasty cinnamon aromas and crisp, layered flavors of lime and mineral. (TF)" (12/2016) K&L Notes: New Mexico may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of sparkling wine, but we expect you'll agree that Gruet is on a par with some of the best-known names in domestic sparkling wine at this value. In 1984, Gilbert Gruet of the French Champagne house Gruet & Fils made a bold choice to plant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir near Albuquerque, New Mexico. High vi...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: " The blend in 2016 is quite different from the previous vintage, reversing the roles of the Pinot Noir (35%) and Chardonnay (55%), with a splash of Pinot Meunier as before. It's young and fresh, with crisp apple fruit flavors in a compact, well-defined frame. There is clearly some aging potential, though where the flavors will go from here is anyone's guess. (PG)" (12/2020)

90 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Incisively yeasty and charged with plenty of spry, mildly citrusy fruit, this comparatively elegant and refined bottling displays the brightness reminiscent of a Blanc de Blancs while quietly possessing a bit of the expected richness of a Blanc de Noirs. Balanced to crispness and buoyed by very well-integrated acidity with wonderfully persistent, pin-point bubbles to spare, it fully reflects the Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs norm of being far more concerned with grace and finesse than with full-volume, toasty extravagance." Whisky Advocate: "Some bourbons are balanced or complex; this is an all-around versatile pour with initial notes of lightly toasted oak, brown sugar, and butterscotch. A fun maltiness, concentrated caramel, and slight hints of cinnamon and watermelon Juicy Fruit hammer home its sipping potential, but its short to medium finish suggests that it’s more suited for cocktails. But hey, why not both? (FM, Fall 2017)" Wine Enthusiast: "The opening aroma is grainy and corn-like, with background touches of paraffin and walnut butter; aeration stimulates green pe...

Planet Oregon is an environmentally focused brand produced by Soter, one of Oregon's most celebrated wineries. Fruit for this sparkler is 100% certified organic Willamette Valley Pinot Noir. The grapes are whole cluster pressed, drawing just a hint of pink color from the skins. The dosage is a minimal 4g/L, keeping the wine very dry and crisp with zesty acidity. A portion of profits from Planet Oregon wines goes to the Oregon Environmental Council, so you can feel even better about pouring yourself another glass of popping another bottle!

92 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Finding a place at the lighter end of the Rosé spectrum and, in fact, a wine that could easily pass for a Blanc de Noirs, this lightly yeasty version fixes on energetic, slightly juicy, young fruit as its main motif. It is briskly balanced, but its ample acidity enlivens without ever once seeming sharp, and it is wholly free of the astringency that marks its more vinous mates. *Two Stars*" (11/2015) 92 points James Suckling: "A lovely, flavorful rosé with sliced peaches and strawberries. Medium to full body. Very bright a...

Distilled by Buffalo Trace this is one of the greatest values in all of Kentucky. This is BT's mash bill #1 (same low rye mash bill as Buffalo Trace, Colonel Taylor, Stagg, and Eagle Rare, and Old Charter). The pedigree is impeccable and the price is almost too good to believe. It's at least 4 years old, making it the same age as whiskey legends like Jack Daniel's or Jim Beam, yet it has flown under the radar for years. At 9 bucks a bottle, it's a ringer for any tasting and deserves a spot at the table and on the bar.

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Delicious but fiery, this nine-year-old small-batch Bourbon offers deep toffee aromatics and bold flavor. On the palate, look for relatively dry flavors: leather, cedar, dried orange peel. A splash of water softens the profile to bring out more vanilla, honey, even a touch of chocolate. (KN)" (09/2014) 90 points Whisky Advocate: "Knob was one of the first bourbons I had when I started taking whiskey seriously, and it’s still a kicker. The finish lingers on a deep, nutty tone. (VB)" (11/2018) K&L Notes: A splashy Brut created to celebrate J's 20th anniversary, the J Cuvée 20 is an assemblage from the winery's best cool-clima...

Winery notes: Pétillant Naturel is a method of producing sparkling wine, also referred to as “Methode Ancestrale”, where the carbonation occurs from bottling the wine during the primary, alcoholic fermentation – in order to capture the carbon dioxide that is being naturally released. Winemaker's Notes: "We don’t grow any Riesling, unfortunately. But there are a bunch of wonderful people that do, and they let us buy some so we can produce this lovely wine! Still or, in this case, sparkling Riesling always enchants, and this wine sings the siren songs of none other than Circe herself. Sourced from two organic vineyards in the Willamette Valley, we pick these on the same day and naturally ferment them together, allowing their tension to weave together something dynamic, beautiful and lush. The sparkle makes it magical. Once primary fer...

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2012 Caymus "40th Anniversary" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1L) (96RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "They appear to be immune to some of winedom’s less than intelligent trends and fads that we see from time to time, and the result is a spectacular 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon 40th Anniversary offering. Its dense purple/black color is followed by copious quantities of crème de cassis and blackberry fruit, silky tannins, a voluptuous texture and stunning purity as well as length. This full-bodied effort is a fabulous example of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon as well as a tribute to this amazing family. Amazing! (RP)" (10/2014)
