Wine & Spirits: "A new year can hardly pass without another radiant offering from Lance Winters and Alameda-based St. George Spirits. Bruto Americano is an American aperitivo, bittered largely with gentian root, while California-grown Seville oranges and buckthorn bark provide orange and woodsy notes. The flavor may recall Campari (with a hint of Aperol citrus)—as does the color, a lush vermillion derived from cochineal, as Campari used to be—but the soothing texture and complexity puts it in a category of its own. BA’s gorgeous Italian futurist label sh...

Heidrun is a meadery in Point Reyes Station that specializes in dry and crisp sparkling meads produced from single-varietal flower honeys. All of their meads are produced in a Champagne method--complete with riddling, disgorgement, and secondary fermentation--and are serious, Champagne-inspired sparklers with delicious honey flavors. The Hawaiian Lehua Blossom is a gorgeous mead with a peach and white flower nose and crisp apple and pear flavors. Very dry, very delicious, and with a very long finish.

Goldeneye in Anderson Valley has long been considered one of the benchmark producers of the region. Their Pinot Noirs have been consistent best sellers here at K&L for at least a decade. When we were offered some of their vintage Brut Rosé, a wine typically reserved for winery direct purchase, we jumped at the chance and weren't disappointed! Winemaker's Notes: "Anderson Valley has earned acclaim for the complexity and distinctiveness of its sparkling wines. Made from our very best blocks of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, our vibrant and alluring Goldeneye B...

Winery notes: ‘Tradition’ Rosé is produced from primarily Pinot Noir (68%) with Chardonnay making up the difference in the blend. Pressed in traditional Champagne cycle. Vineyards fermented separately in neutral barrel w/ native yeasts. 2 yrs on lees. 6 g/L dosage (565 cases produced)

For decades, Schramsberg has been arguably America's best producer of sparkling wines. Sourcing fruit from multiple sites throughout California, they have achieved a consistency of style that delivers the goods, even as their wines are single vintage bottlings. Fruit from Anderson Valley, Sonoma, Mendocino, and Marin all comprise this blend, with each region contributing the character of this classic American sparkler.

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This inaugural release is stunning and incredibly impressive - a wine well worth stocking up on for the price and quality. A beautiful jasmine aroma leads to marzipan, peach and cherry flavors as lively acidity envelopes the palate. It's a blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir. *Ranked #5, Enthusiast Top 100 of 2020, Editors' Choice* (VB)" (08/2020) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Creamy and vibrant, with apple and snappy strawberry flavors that offer a dash of brioche on the finish. Made in small batches on San Francisco's Treasure Island, this beautiful gin is the essence of flavor achieved through simplicity. Just 4 botanicals make up the recipe: lavender, orange peel, lemon peel, and Albanian Juniper. Created through vacuum distillation, all 4 botanicals carry through on the nose and palate with exquisite precision and intensity. The spirit itself is soft and elegant. Another great gin in the stable of San Francisco-made spirits. One-liter bottles available exclusively at K&L!

91 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Here is an exceptionally well-focused Rosé that, while deftly infused with a keen streak of yeasty richness, conveys continuous, fresh cherry fruit from start to finish and comes up a winner for its lively balance and its lovely finesse. It is long on effusive, very fine bubbles that simply refuse to quit and shows no small degree of complexity in a mannerly, neatly measured mix that, at every turn, is marked by exacting champenization, and it is wholly free of the vinous astringency to which some Rosés are prone. *Two Star...

A particularly rare California sparkling wine produced by Don Baumhefner who had been inspired by late disgorged Bollinger to let his wines rest "en tirage" for years. The San Francisco Chronicle's Esther Mobley fell in love with Baumhefner's 1992 and was excited to report in December 2017 that he had released another wine he discovered in Lake County that had come from a vineyard in Carneros. Mobley writes: "The 2010 Blanc de Blancs smells heady, wafting sweet bread dough. It’s rich, nutty and creamy, and more direct than Baumhefner’s 1990 and 1992 vint...

Michael Cruse followed up his Champagne-inspired sparkling wine project, Ultramarine, established in 2008 with the creation of Cruse Wine Co. in 2013. Cruse Wine Co. was an opportunity for Michael to showcase fruit driven and satisfying wines that were fresh and pleasurable, but still remained serious at the same time. The roots of the North Coast run deep with Michael, so he chose to focus on sites within Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Contra Costa Counties to create these special wines. The one thing he didn’t want to do was to create another Pinot Noir ...

Winery Notes: " After our wine completes 12-month en tirage (aging on the lees), a traditional dosage of liqueur d?expedition is added for balance and complexity. The base wine blend contains 24% reserve wines (from a perpetual reserve). This Méthode Traditionnelle Brut exhibits attractive notes of golden delicious apple and citrus blossom. Fresh and zesty on the entry, the enduring bubbles release fragrant toasted brioche and roasted almond. A creamy finish completes the profile of this elegant blend. 56% Pinot Noir, 44% Chardonnay. 9 g/L dosage."

A very exciting traditional method (bottle fermented) Chenin Blanc from old vines at the revered Jurassic Park Vineyard. John and Alex at Birichino never stop experimenting...but thankfully their failure rate seems to be just about zero! An early pick kept the acids high for this sparkler and that in turn balances the richness and power of these 40+ year old vines. Winery Notes: "Honeyed, saline, savory and immensely persistent, the 2016 Chenin was the product of an early September pick at a very modest sugar level, suitable for sparkling wine. Fermentat...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The current release of the NV Brut Rosé is made up mainly of fruit from the 2015 vintage and is a blend of 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay. It was made with about nine grams per liter dosage and was disgorged in March of 2019. Pale salmon-pink in color, it has a lively nose of red berries, crushed stone, musk melon, floral hints and citrus peel and a bright and fresh palate with loads of perfumed red berries and energetic mousse, finishing long and uplifted. 93 points Wine Spectator: "Dark, rich and extracted. Shows layers of ripe currant, blackberry, espresso-tinged oak and subtle nutmeg-hazelnut and cedary oak flavors that are still slightly raw and disjointed, but deeply concentrated. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. (JL)" (05/2008) K&L Notes: The Cuvée L from Lewis Cellars is a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc. Oak spice, vanilla and blackberry fruit characterize this flagship wine's enigmatic nose. Black fruits coat the palate and ripe tannins that propel this bold wine. Onl...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Flavorful and polished, this supple wine blends subtle apple and pear notes with buttery, creamy accents. It is rich in character and softly framed by fine bubbles and elegant acidity, with a hint of sweetness on the finish. (JG)" (04/2019) K&L Notes: J Vineyards has been crafting wine since 1986. This is the first release of the "California Cuvée," made from grapes grown in cool-climate locations throughout California, including the Russian River Valley, Santa Lucia Highlands, and Mendocino County. A blend of Chardonnay, Pi...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "From estate-grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this sparkler is dry, nutty and spicy, with a creaminess of brioche and baked apple. In the glass it evolves to show high-toned acidity and a freshness of citrus, with grainy texture adding to its complexity. (VB)" (12/2018) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Refined and vibrant, with strawberry blossom, peach and spicy cinnamon flavors that take on richness on the long finish. Winery Notes: "Black Girl Magic Wines Sparkling Brut, a blend of predominately Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay. Michael Pierce and the gang from OsCo, a new distillery on 25th Street near Telegraph in Oakland, are making some of the most interesting new gins and white spirits we've tasted in years. OsCo is part of a winery called Two Mile Wines, so all of the spirits are grape-based. This is an explosive, junipery London dry gin.

Though smaller than Napa Valley's big sparkling wine producers, many of them founded by famed Champagne houses, Iron Horse, located in the cool climate countryside of west Sonoma County, is recognized as one of the select among top American producers of traditional method sparkling wine. They just have that certain...je ne sais quoi. This aptly named Pinot Noir-based sparkler is popularly served at wedding celebrations—but it's not just for large crowds anymore! And has also "married" ridiculously well with humbler occasions like a Tuesday night entrée o...

92 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Finding a place at the lighter end of the Rosé spectrum and, in fact, a wine that could easily pass for a Blanc de Noirs, this lightly yeasty version fixes on energetic, slightly juicy, young fruit as its main motif. It is briskly balanced, but its ample acidity enlivens without ever once seeming sharp, and it is wholly free of the astringency that marks its more vinous mates. *Two Stars*" (11/2015) 92 points James Suckling: "A lovely, flavorful rosé with sliced peaches and strawberries. Medium to full body. Very bright a...

91 points Wine Spectator: "Sleek and vibrant, featuring floral and multilayered strawberry and apple flavors, laced with graham cracker and toasted nut notes. (TF) " (12/2019) Connoisseurs Guide: "One of the nice surprises in this month's survey of new sparkling wines, this well-composed offering shows a good sense of fruity depth and displays fine champenized precision with a full and frothy mousse, defined yeast and energy to spare. It notably outperforms Schramsberg's Mirabelle Brut in this outing and is, all in all, an eminently likable bubbly that...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "This elegant and plush wine is compelling from the first whiff of brioche through creamy, baking-spice flavors to a lingering delicate finish. A luxurious mouthfeel, good balance between crispness and ripeness and a profusion of flavor make it rival the quality of the parent brand, Schramsberg. (JG)" (09/2019) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Alluring and nuanced, with expressive pear, brioche and caramelized hazelnut flavors that finish on a rich, polished note. 96 points Decanter: "Beautifully harmonious with intriguing layers of quince, oyster shell, citrus, plum and lime peel. A dry, soft mousse which to be enjoyed now or within the next few years." (05/2019) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Broadly defined in honeysuckle, peach, brioche and moderate acidity, this is a crowd-pleasing and immensely likable sparkling wine. The finish lingers on a deep, nutty tone. (VB)" (11/2018) K&L Notes: A splashy Brut created to celebrate J's 20th anniversary, the J Cuvée 20 is an assemblage from the winery's best cool-clima...

90 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Just as it did in last year’s survey of sparkling wines, Scharffenberger’s Brut Rosé once again impresses with its fine combination of deep, slightly juicy, very well-stated fruit and integral autolysis. It is a deftly balanced wine with a steady, very long-lasting stream of tiny bubbles, and, although we continue to be happily surprised at the number of affordable sparklers that merit 'Good Value' recommendation, this wine’s buoyancy, intricate layering and careful crafting earns it an especially enthusiastic nod as nothin...
