91 points Wine Enthusiast: " From 31-year-old vines, this bubbly is all kinds of wild, starting with a very cloudy appearance then leading into aromas of grapefruit soda, apple sauce and banana. That unique combination shows strongly on the palate as well, where tropical hints of mango and makrut lime add to the attention-grabbing format. (MK)" (03/2021)

Wine & Spirits: "A new year can hardly pass without another radiant offering from Lance Winters and Alameda-based St. George Spirits. Bruto Americano is an American aperitivo, bittered largely with gentian root, while California-grown Seville oranges and buckthorn bark provide orange and woodsy notes. The flavor may recall Campari (with a hint of Aperol citrus)—as does the color, a lush vermillion derived from cochineal, as Campari used to be—but the soothing texture and complexity puts it in a category of its own. BA’s gorgeous Italian futurist label sh...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Tradition Sparkling Wine is made from 54% Pinot Noir and 46% Chardonnay. It's made using the traditional method and is intentionally crafted to be a bit more oxidative and open than the Ultramarine sparklings. The nose explodes to gregarious aromas of chalk, freshly baked brioche and crushed almonds with a lush core of peachy fruits and honeyed nuances. The palate is all class, with those ripe fruits reigned in by chalky undertones and framed by fine, featherweight mousse, and it finishes long and toasty...

Winery notes: ‘Tradition’ Rosé is produced from primarily Pinot Noir (68%) with Chardonnay making up the difference in the blend. Sourced from Rorick Heritage Vyd in the Sierra Nevada Foothills, Alder Springs in Mendocino, Keefer Ranch in Sonoma and Linda Vista in Napa--this new traditional method wine from Michael Cruse is a complete expression of California bubbly. Pressed in traditional Champagne cycle. Vineyards fermented separately in neutral barrel w/ native yeasts. 2 yrs on lees. 6 g/L dosage (565 cases produced)

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Lively, pure raspberry and red-cherry flavors infuse this elegant wine with life while a tangy balance and fine-grained bubbles make it refreshing and substantive on the palate. The red fruits carry through nicely to the finish. (JG)" (12/2021) K&L Notes: Schramsberg's sparkling rosé is made at an historic estate in Calistoga, Napa Valley, in the méthode traditionnelle of Champagne, from grapes grown in Mendocino, Sonoma, Napa, and Marin counties on California's North Coast. Considered among the top domestic sparkling wine p...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This inaugural release is stunning and incredibly impressive - a wine well worth stocking up on for the price and quality. A beautiful jasmine aroma leads to marzipan, peach and cherry flavors as lively acidity envelopes the palate. It's a blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir. *Ranked #5, Enthusiast Top 100 of 2020, Editors' Choice* (VB)" (08/2020) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Creamy and vibrant, with apple and snappy strawberry flavors that offer a dash of brioche on the finish. A particularly rare California sparkling wine produced by Don Baumhefner who had been inspired by late disgorged Bollinger to let his wines rest "en tirage" for years. The San Francisco Chronicle's Esther Mobley fell in love with Baumhefner's 1992 and was excited to report in December 2017 that he had released another wine he discovered in Lake County that had come from a vineyard in Carneros. Mobley writes: "The 2010 Blanc de Blancs smells heady, wafting sweet bread dough. It’s rich, nutty and creamy, and more direct than Baumhefner’s 1990 and 1992 vint...

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "Made from 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay, this stunning sparkler offers layers of stone fruit, hazelnut liqueur and marzipan. Mineral-driven and sharp in acidity, it stays fresh and focused in citrus and oyster shell flavors. (VB)" (11/2021)

All pét-nats are not created equal. Some are, in fact, decidedly less than equal. However, Birichino makes some of the most consistently delicious in the market. Few brands occupy as many spots on our shelves (or website) as Birichino. The reasons for this are numerous. Firstly, the wines are absolutely delicious. Secondly, few producers have such a dazzling assortment of varietals and styles, each one worthy of a placement. Third, the prices are very modest given the quality of the wines, growing critical acclaim, and remarkable vineyard sources. Last ...

A hipster wine that's got roots back to the reign of Hadrian and beyond? We knew some of you might sign up for piquette, an ancient wine of the commoners that is most uncommon these days, especially in California — yet uncommonly intriguing. As the winery explains: "Piquette is made from a second fermentation and pressing of grape pomace, which is normally thrown away in modern winemaking. Known most famously as a provincial wine made in France by farm and vineyard workers for their own consumption, this practice dates as far back as Ancient Rome. With P...

Carboniste sparkling wines are a fresh take on the category, as San Francisco Chronicle wine reporter Esther Mobley described in a December, 2019 feature: "They taste youthful and primary. Extended tirage — who needs it? The wines are also notable for their soft textures. Whereas a typical bottle of Champagne might have 6 bars of pressure — a measurement of the force of the bubbles — the Carboniste wines clock in around 4, which puts them closer to the pressure of Prosecco."

96 points Decanter: "Beautifully harmonious with intriguing layers of quince, oyster shell, citrus, plum and lime peel. A dry, soft mousse which to be enjoyed now or within the next few years." (05/2019) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Broadly defined in honeysuckle, peach, brioche and moderate acidity, this is a crowd-pleasing and immensely likable sparkling wine. The finish lingers on a deep, nutty tone. (VB)" (11/2018) K&L Notes: A splashy Brut created to celebrate J's 20th anniversary, the J Cuvée 20 is an assemblage from the winery's best cool-clima...

Here's a sparkling wine brand with a theme we can all get behind for the New Year: Onward! Faith Armstrong Foster is the winemaker behind the wines of Onward. This rare sparkling Malvasia Bianca was handled gently, and transferred from tank to bottle by gravity. Indeed, the gentle process is a must for "Pét-Nat," as the wine is still fermenting. Thus, the wine makes its own natural bubbles, without additional dosage. Handle with care, too, after opening, as the bottles contain a slight amount of lees sediment, to complete fermentation and add complexity...

Wine Enthusiast: "Simple cherry and strawberry flavors compete for attention with a dried herb accent in this dry, light-bodied wine (JG)" (12/2020) K&L Notes: Ultraviolet's sparkling rosé was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle's Wine of the Week: "Once poured into the glass, the Ultraviolet sparkling rosé is fluorescent pink in color; ultraviolet feels like an apt description. It reminds me of strawberry-kiwi Snapple and watermelon bubble gum, with soft bubbles that glide across your tongue. With its exuberant fruitiness and relative dryness (the...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: " Blending 53% Pinot Noir, 44% Chardonnay and 3% Pinot Gris into a cohesive whole, this sparkler is aged nearly four years. Effusively fruity and balanced in acidity, it offers rich, rounded notes of pear, green apple and melon that contrast against a bite of cookie. (VB)" (07/2021) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Sleek and steely, with precise lemon, fresh ginger, blanched almond and strawberry flavors that build richness on a long finish. (TF)" (07/2021)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The current release of the NV Estate Brut is made up mainly of fruit from the 2015 vintage. It is a blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir and was made with about ten grams per liter dosage. Disgorged in October of 2018, it has a fresh, open nose with pure fruit expression: crushed apples, pears and lemon peel mingle with touches of stone, flowers and toast. The medium-bodied palate offers a lovely dichotomy of toasty fruits with uplifted citrusy, minerally accents with a finely beaded mousse, and it finishes...

Michael Cruse followed up his Champagne-inspired sparkling wine project, Ultramarine, established in 2008 with the creation of Cruse Wine Co. in 2013. Cruse Wine Co. was an opportunity for Michael to showcase fruit driven and satisfying wines that were fresh and pleasurable, but still remained serious at the same time. The roots of the North Coast run deep with Michael, so he chose to focus on sites within Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, and Contra Costa Counties to create these special wines. The one thing he didn’t want to do was to create another Pinot Noir...

We are very excited to offer a brand new wine from Rhys Vineyards. This is the first release of their estate grown sparkling wine which was made in colaboration with grower Champagne superstar, Rodolphe Peters of the esteemed Champagne Pierre Peters. The base wines for this bottling are 100% Chardonnay from Rhy's Mt. Pajaro Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The fruit for the sparkling wine program comes from an especially cold northwest facing block in the vineyard. The wines were fermented and aged in a combination of neutral 225L French oak barrels...

Goldeneye in Anderson Valley has long been considered one of the benchmark producers of the region. Their Pinot Noirs have been consistent best sellers here at K&L for at least a decade. When we were offered some of their vintage Brut Rosé, a wine typically reserved for winery direct purchase, we jumped at the chance and weren't disappointed! Winemaker's Notes: "Anderson Valley has earned acclaim for the complexity and distinctiveness of its sparkling wines. For decades, Schramsberg has been arguably America's best producer of sparkling wines. Sourcing Pinot Noir fruit from multiple sites throughout California, they have achieved a consistency of style that delivers the goods, even as their wines are single vintage bottlings. This blend includes fruit from Anderson Valley, Sonoma, Mendocino, and Marin, with each region contributing to the character of this classic American sparkler.

Fresh ginger, biscuits, toasted almonds and mild cherry nuances fill the palate. *Editors' Choice* (JG)" (10/2020) 93 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Elements of toast and lemons and a faintly floral note merge nicely in the nose of this firmly constructed, complex and yet very lively wine, and its fine veneer of autolyzed yeast carries well into its explicitly autolyzed flavors. Connoisseurs Guide: "One of the nice surprises in this month's survey of new sparkling wines, this well-composed offering shows a good sense of fruity depth and displays fine champenized precision with a full and frothy mousse, defined yeast and energy to spare. It notably outperforms Schramsberg's Mirabelle Brut in this outing and is, all in all, an eminently likable bubbly that fills the Rosé niche nicely. *One Star*" (12/2019) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV Mirabelle Brut Rosé is made from 53% Chardonnay and 47% Pinot Noir, using 84% fruit f...

90 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Just as it did in last year’s survey of sparkling wines, Scharffenberger’s Brut Rosé once again impresses with its fine combination of deep, slightly juicy, very well-stated fruit and integral autolysis. It is a deftly balanced wine with a steady, very long-lasting stream of tiny bubbles, and, although we continue to be happily surprised at the number of affordable sparklers that merit 'Good Value' recommendation, this wine’s buoyancy, intricate layering and careful crafting earns it an especially enthusiastic nod as nothin...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Flavorful and polished, this supple wine blends subtle apple and pear notes with buttery, creamy accents. 92 points Connoisseurs Guide: "Finding a place at the lighter end of the Rosé spectrum and, in fact, a wine that could easily pass for a Blanc de Noirs, this lightly yeasty version fixes on energetic, slightly juicy, young fruit as its main motif. It is briskly balanced, but its ample acidity enlivens without ever once seeming sharp, and it is wholly free of the astringency that marks its more vinous mates. *Two Stars*" (11/2015) 92 points James Suckling: "A lovely, flavorful rosé with sliced peaches and strawberries. Medium to full body. Very bright a...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "This elegant and plush wine is compelling from the first whiff of brioche through creamy, baking-spice flavors to a lingering delicate finish. A luxurious mouthfeel, good balance between crispness and ripeness and a profusion of flavor make it rival the quality of the parent brand, Schramsberg. (JG)" (09/2019) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Alluring and nuanced, with expressive pear, brioche and caramelized hazelnut flavors that finish on a rich, polished note. Bid on this bottle of Rhys Bearwallow Vineyard "Ultra Brut" Anderson Valley Sparkling Wine (93JG, 92VN). John Gilman: "The first release of Rhys Vineyards Ultra Brut from the Bearwallow Vineyard is composed of a blend of sixty-four percent chardonnay and thirty-six percent pinot noir. This wine is from the base year of 2017, with reserve wines from 2016 included, but the plan is to eventually include reserve wines from a solera started in 2016, so it will be based on several more vintages as time goes by. The cuvée’s name beginning with the base year 2019 will be changed to 'Reserve Perpetuelle' to reflect this, as that wine will include four vintages in it. The vins clairs went through malolactic fermentation, were barrel-fermented and were aged in cask until the June 21st of 2018 (all used casks), so the wine had a nice, extended elevage prior to bottling for secondary fermentation. It was disgorged on April 16th of 2020 and finished with a dosage of two grams per liter. " (10/2020)
