Ariston Aspasie "Réserve" Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
Don't let the name change fool you, this is the same great Champagne that used to be called "Carte Blanche". The Ariston Aspasie reserve is made of 40% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir and 30% Meunier. A balanced cuvée in every way, this Champagne is clean and powerful at once. It has a natural toasty quality from spending five full years on the lees, and plenty of refreshing zip from the far northern location of the vineyards. No bottle in our inventory transports me to Champagne like this one. It is as true to the terroir and as pure as anything I could wish...

Michel Arnould "La Grande Cuvée" Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Pure and complex aromas speak of plenty of yeast, brioche, freshly sliced citrus and a whiff of rose petal. On the palate there is equally good complexity thanks to the high percentage of pinot noir to the medium-bodied, firm and utterly delicious flavors that are shaped by a moderately firm and fine effervescence before culminating in a refreshing and inviting finish. This isn't the most elegant Champagne you'll try but I'll wager you won't taste many that have this kind of depth for the price. " (06/2018) K&L Not...
Price: $39.99

The Ariston's vineyards are vastly different than those of the other blanc de blancs producers that we carry. The steeper slopes, less chalk and more fossils in the soil of Brouillet make for a rich, creamy style of Chardonnay Champagne that will appeal to just about anyone. This is one of my favorite toasting Champagnes. All of the flavors are up-front; it is open-knit and fun. It is a perfect way to start a party. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

Michel Arnould "Réserve" Grand Cru Brut Verzenay Champagne
Top Pick!
If you have enjoyed the wines of Lallement, Bollinger, and Krug in the past, I think you will very much enjoy Michel Arnould. They are bold, masculine Champagnes with plenty of toasty flavor. This is a blend of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay, entirely from estate vineyards in the Grand Cru of Verzenay. This is a great party Champagne, since it is full of flavor yet refreshing and moreish. The hazelnut Pinot character, so unique to the village of Verzenay, is pronounced in this wine, and many good tasters have mistaken it for barrel fermentation (it is...

This rosé bottling is 100% Grand Cru Pinot Noir from Verzenay, the northernmost of all the Grand Crus in this northernmost of French wine regions. The whole village faces north, the wrong way, away from the sun, and yet miraculously ripens Pinot Noir, the most difficult Champagne variety to ripen perfectly. Some say it's because of a meteor that in prehistoric times hit the area that is now the village, creating the faux de Verzenay, a forest where the trees bend and fold in on themselves like a dark wood in The Lord of the Rings. The wine is made by ass...
Price: $36.99

This balanced, elegant Champagne is composed of 30% Chardonnay, 60% Pinot Noir and 10% Meunier. The grapes are all from the Gonet family's estate, spread from the southernmost 1er cru of Vertus to the valley of the Marne. It is a gorgeous wine to toast with: bready, vibrant and flavorful. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

95 points Decanter: "A fine straw-gold colour with great finesse of bubble flow and mousse. Joyful aromas of apple blossom and ripe pear. A full, defined palate demonstrates richness that will help to give this a long life in the cellar. (ME)" (02/2017) 95 points James Halliday: "An uncommon blend of 40% pinot meunier and 30% each of pinot noir and chardonnay, with 40% reserve wines, fermented in a mix of tank and use of aged oak barrels. Deliberate choice of meunier is the key to its drink any time soon style, which combining elegance, finesse and gre...

The Carte d'Or from Arnould makes up less than 2% of their small production, and then not every year. Patrick Arnould trades grapes with Delphine Cazals for this wine, which is 50% Mesnil Grand Cru from her estate, and 50% old vine Pinot Noir from the Arnould estate in Verzenay. Our allocation is tiny, and this Champagne is capable of very long ageing.

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Redolent of toasted brioche and rising bread, the 2012 Methode Traditionelle offers complex, yeast-driven aromas that complement the subtle nut and citrus notes. It's a medium-bodied blend of 91% Chardonnay and only 9% Pinot Noir, showcasing the crisp, citrusy notes of an aged blanc de blancs after 46 months on the lees. It tastes richer than it does weighty, juxtaposing creamy, nutty notes against an elegant bead and sensation of lightness. I'd expect it to age gracefully under cork, gradually gaining weight and...

Laurent-Perrier "La Cuvée" Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
93 points James Suckling: "The brioche and cooked-apple and cream character really comes through here. Full-bodied and round with fine bubbles. Flavorful and intense. Vivid, bread-dough finish. This is four years on lees. 55% Chardonnay and the rest Pinot." (07/2019) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "The nonvintage cuvée from this producer is definitely on the dry side. Like many Champagnes in the range, it has benefited from long aging before release, giving a wine that has richness as well as great fruits, hints of maturity coming through. (RV)" (12/2020) ...

92 points Decanter: "50% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 15% Meunier from 100 villages in all, and including 30% reserves from 10 vintages back to 1995; a small proportion now being produced with malolactic. Black Label remains the confident barometer of Lanson, and Hervé Dantan’s first blend is a class act, a resounding statement of his talent in preserving the style and integrity of the house while meticulously polishing the edges. It’s a very important cuvée in the grand scheme of Champagne: one of the best and most consistent of the bargain set. (TS)"...

92 points Wine Spectator: "This bright and zesty Champagne is lightly juicy and appealing, offering flavors of Honeycrisp apple, ripe white cherry, biscuit and pickled ginger. Balanced and lacy in texture, with a lingering, spiced finish. (AN)" (11/2017) 91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Pretty notes of toasted bread, yeast, orange peel and white peach introduce rich, full-bodied and borderline creamy flavors that are shaped by a relatively soft effervescence before terminating in an agreeably dry, clean and focused finale. This is drier than the 7...

Moussé Fils "L'Or d'Eugene Perpétuelle" Brut Blanc de Noirs Champagne
Top Pick!
94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of 80% Pinot Meunier and 20% Pinot Noir drawn from a solera established in 2003, the latest rendition of Moussé's NV Brut Blanc de Noirs L'Or d'Eugène was disgorged in June 2019 with four grams per liter dosage. Wafting from the glass with a deep and complex bouquet of golden orchard fruit, honeycomb, mirabelle plum, candied peel and fresh pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, with a rich and sapid core of fruit, lively acids and a delicate pinpoint mousse. 90 points Wine & Spirits: "Ripe pear and melon flavors contrast the tart citrusy acidity in this wine. It has a distinct scent of wood spice, which carries through the wine and takes it in a sweet, umami direction. A creamy, Rococo Champagne, this would be satisfying with simple dishes like fluke crudo. " (12/2011) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "A well-balanced wine, this is poised between fresh fruits and a tangy texture. The dosage is just right, emphasizing the minerality of the wine while keeping a soft aftertaste. (RV)" (12/2018) 90 points Wine Spe...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "A high (60%) amount of older Reserve Champagne has gone into this mature blend. It offers richness and a ripe structure that brings out the rounded white fruits. (RV)" (12/2019) K&L Notes: This blend of 60% Meunier, 30% Pinot Noir, and 10% Chardonnay comes from exclusively estate-grown fruit in the premier crus of Chigny-les-Roses, Sacy, Rilly-la-Montagne, and Ludes. It's a fantastic aperitif and has surprising richness and concentration at the price.

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Lively citrus flavors are nicely tempered by almond and bread-dough nuances in this elegant, well-balanced and rich-tasting wine. It offers more than fresh fruit, adding aged-on-the-lees complexity for a very tempting expression. (JG)" (11/2020) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Lithe and delicately balanced, with vibrant lemon custard, blanched almond and steely citrus tones that take on richness and speed on the long finish. 94 points Decanter: "42% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay, 18% Meunier from 55% estate vineyards; 16% fermented and matured in oak casks; 30% malolactic. The rise and evolution of this cuvée over the past 15 years, and particularly since the construction of its dedicated facility in 2007, has showed no sign of slowing today, as Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon continues his fanatical regime of experimenting, tweaking and refining every detail. I’ve long adored Brut Premier, a grand pinnacle and dependable bargain in the non-vintage Champagne stakes. (TS)" (08/2020) 9...

93 points Decanter: "Another seriously classy fizz from winemaker Dermot Sugrue. Gentle cream and yeast aromas give way to a finely textured and persistent palate that shows flavours of crisp green apples and freshly baked bread. (SB)" 92 points Vinous: "The NV Brut from Wiston has been a go-to English sparkler for some time now. The bunches are pressed using a traditional Coquard basket press. It has a steely, malic bouquet of dew-speckled Granny Smith apples, wet limestone and a touch of petrichor. It is almost like a Blanc de Blancs, reserved yet eng...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Based on the 2014 vintage, complemented by fully 40% old reserve wines, the new release of Charles Heidsieck's NV Brut Réserve was disgorged earlier this year. It's showing very well, opening up in the glass with notes of green apple, dried white flowers, pear, candied peel and walnuts. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a textural attack and a racier, tighter-knit core than either the 2012- or 2010-base renditions, displaying good concentration and underlying richness. (07/2019) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Apple blossom and graphite aromas lace flavors of Asian pear, blanched almond and lemon curd in this sleek Champagne. Fresh and linear, with a fine, creamy mousse. (AN)" (12/2020) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The elegance of this nonvintage cuvée sums up the style of the house, balancing acidity with a dosage that is just right. 93 points Vinous: "The NV Brut Oeil de Perdrix is floral, resonant and super-expressive, the Oeil de Perdrix has so much to offer. The interplay of aromatic top notes and Bouzy richness makes for a compelling, open-knit Champagne that is an absolutely joy to taste. This is such a gorgeous and totally distinctive Champagne. I would prefer to give it at least a few more months in bottle, as it is a bit tight today, especially on the finish. Disgorged: April 15, 2019. Wine & Spirits: " A new year can hardly pass without another radiant offering from Lance Winters and Alameda-based St. George Spirits. Bruto Americano is an American aperitivo, bittered largely with gentian root, while California-grown Seville oranges and buckthorn bark provide orange and woodsy notes. The flavor may recall Campari (with a hint of Aperol citrus)—as does the color, a lush vermillion derived from cochineal, as Campari used to be—but the soothing texture and complexity puts it in a category of its own. 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Rhubarb, hibiscus and tart red currant paint a fruity picture on the nose. A second sniff reveals a good measure of Red Delicious apple. The mousse is creamy and transports wave upon wave of those vivacious apple and hibiscus notes, all backed with an autolytic backdrop reminiscent of freshly baked short crust. This is creamy, joyful and sophisticated with a fine, persistent foam and a long, delectable finish. (AN)" (11/2017) Decanter: "Generous orchard fruit nose, forward with hints of hazelnut and ripe nectarine. Appealing for its upfront charm. (SF)" (09/2019) Wine & Spirits: "A big-boned Champagne, this is broad with butterscotch flavors and the salty meatiness of a veal chop. Soft and leesy, it’s built for savory foods." Goldeneye in Anderson Valley has long been considered one of the benchmark producers of the region. Their Pinot Noirs have been consistent best sellers here at K&L for at least a decade. When we were offered some of their vintage Brut Rosé, a wine typically reserved for winery direct purchase, we jumped at the chance and weren't disappointed! Winemaker's Notes: "Anderson Valley has earned acclaim for the complexity and distinctiveness of its sparkling wines. 91 points John Gilman: "The current bottling of Taittinger’s “Brut La Française” shares the same cépages as the Brut Réserve (forty percent chardonnay, thirty-five percent pinot noir and twenty-five percent pinot meunier), with the wine spending one additional year aging on its fine lees prior to disgorgement. The bouquet on the wine is lovely, offering a classy blend of pear, apple, a complex base of limestone soil, bread dough, gently musky, meunier floral tones and a bit of smokiness in the upper register. On the palate the wine is bright, full and ze...

Stony, sharply focused citrus and orchard fruit flavors show very good energy, turning juicier and deeper with air and picking up a melony quality and a hint of anise. Finishes on intense notes of dusty minerals and ginger, with very good clarity and persistence. 92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A gorgeously complex and elegant nose that is classy and restrained yet not shy with notes of brioche, lemon rind and rose petal aromas that introduce fresh, racy, detailed and moderately effervescent flavors that carry as much depth as the nose hints at, all wrapped in a sappy and lingering finish. The bead is not especially fine but the character and overall harmony is impressive. Lovely stuff." (10/2009) 92 points Wine Spectator: "There's a sense of poise to this rich, spiced Champagne. "I am fascinated by Italian sparkling wines made of indigenous Italian varieties," writes importer Oliver McCrum, "and the Zanussis make a really good one. It's not made by either of the normal methods used to make dry sparkling wine, but rather by the method used to make Moscato d'Asti, which involves putting must into the special fermentation tank, and fermenting all the way from grape-juice to sparkling wine in one step. The wine is then aged in the tank on the lees until judged to be done, then decanted off the lees and bottled. (Some top-end Prosecc...

It was made with about nine grams per liter dosage and was disgorged in March of 2019. Pale salmon-pink in color, it has a lively nose of red berries, crushed stone, musk melon, floral hints and citrus peel and a bright and fresh palate with loads of perfumed red berries and energetic mousse, finishing long and uplifted. 91 points Connoisseurs Guide: "72% Pinot Noir; 28% Chardonnay. Here is an exceptionally well-focused Rosé that, while deftly infused with a keen streak of yeasty richness, conveys continuous, fresh cherry fruit from start to finish and comes up a winner for its lively balance and its lovely finesse. It is long on effusive, very fine bubbles that simply refuse to quit and shows no small degree of complexity in a mannerly, neatly measured mix that, at every turn, is marked by exacting champenization, and it is wholly free of the vinous astringency to which...

92 points Vinous: "The NV Brut Cuvée Ste.-Anne is one of the best Champagnes readers will find in its price range, or any price range, for that matter. Bright and beautifully focused, the Ste.-Anne has so much to offer. The purity of the flavors is just remarkable. If anything, it needs more time on the cork to soften, as it is quite reticent at this stage. 92 points James Suckling: "This Champagne rosé shows some good complexity on the nose with bread crust and brioche to match some dried cranberries and raspberries. Direct acidity frames the fine layering of bubbles. " (05/2019) Wine Enthusiast: "This crisp, fruity wine has a balanced texture that moves easily between bright acidity and ripe red fruits. The freshness shows strongly along with a soft aftertaste that keeps the wine rich. (RV)" (12/2018) K&L Notes: This is distinctive for being the area’s only château-bottled estate Champagne.

Heidrun is a meadery in Point Reyes Station that specializes in dry and crisp sparkling meads produced from single-varietal flower honeys. All of their meads are produced in a Champagne method--complete with riddling, disgorgement, and secondary fermentation--and are serious, Champagne-inspired sparklers with delicious honey flavors. The Hawaiian Lehua Blossom is a gorgeous mead with a peach and white flower nose and crisp apple and pear flavors. Very dry, very delicious, and with a very long finish.

Winery Notes: "The NV Spark is a blend of 55% Pinot Noir, 37% Chasselas Doré and 8% Pinot Blanc, from 31-year-old vines. It is an "ultra brut," although this particular bottling is made using forced carbonation instead of méthode Champenois. Medium to deep cherry-pink in color, it has aromas of cantaloupe, strawberries, raspberries and lemon peel with notes of stone and toast. The palate is dry with citrus and red berry flavors, spritely mousse and a refreshing, mineral-driven finish."

(AN)" (11/2017) 90 points John Gilman: "As I noted in the past, the Drappier Brut Rosé is one hundred percent pinot noir from the estate’s own Aube vineyards and is produced by the saignée method, so that its lovely cherry color is from skin contact, rather than by adding a bit of still red wine to the blend. The cuvée is aged two and a ha...

Avinyó is grower producer Cava, and unlike some of their neighbors they proudly market themselves as Cava. They only make wines from their own vineyards, which they farm organically. La Ticota is Avinyo’s oldest single vineyard. This is a wine that is only made in the best of vintages. La Ticota is a 2ha plot that was planted to Xarel-lo and Macabeu in 1945 in calcareous clay soils. This Gran Reserva is aged for over five years on its lees.

A particularly rare California sparkling wine produced by Don Baumhefner who had been inspired by late disgorged Bollinger to let his wines rest "en tirage" for years. The San Francisco Chronicle's Esther Mobley fell in love with Baumhefner's 1992 and was excited to report in December 2017 that he had released another wine he discovered in Lake County that had come from a vineyard in Carneros. Mobley writes: "The 2010 Blanc de Blancs smells heady, wafting sweet bread dough. It’s rich, nutty and creamy, and more direct than Baumhefner’s 1990 and 1992 vint...

93 points Raymond Chan: "100% Pinot Noir, fermented to 12.5% alc. with 5 g/L dosage, the wine aged a minimum of 24 months on lees. Bright, light salmon pink colour with some depth, the bead very fine and persistent. This has a full, solid and voluminous bouquet with deeply packed aromas of bready autolysis laced with strawberry and red fruit notes. This is very expressive of Pinot Noir. Dry to taste and fulsome, with mouthfilling flavors of stonefruits, red berries and brioche, the palate is open and broad, but well-proportioned with weight and depth." ...

This all estate, all Meunier Champagne comes from Leuvrigny in center of the Marne Valley. While it is labled extra brut and dosed very lightly at just 3 grams per liter of sugar, it drinks like a brut because of the 50% reserve wines added and the concentration of the 30-40 year old vines. -Gary Westby

A very exciting traditional method (bottle fermented) Chenin Blanc from old vines at the revered Jurassic Park Vineyard. John and Alex at Birichino never stop experimenting...but thankfully their failure rate seems to be just about zero! An early pick kept the acids high for this sparkler and that in turn balances the richness and power of these 40+ year old vines.
