90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The varietal Garnacha 2018 Soplo shows contained ripeness and 13% alcohol, with a mix of flowers and berries, clean, expressive and elegant. The palate is medium-bodied and reveals fine tannins and nice balance. Very pleasant. (LG)" (09/2020)

2016 Domaine Benedetti "Larmes Papales" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Top Pick!
96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The special cuvée is the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Larmes Papales, 100% Grenache that was brought up in concrete tanks and demi-muids. Just sensational anyway you look at it, with flamboyant notes of blackberries, roasted herbs, melted licorice, and Asian spices, this beauty is ripe, powerful, and full-bodied, with sweet tannin and a great finish. It’s for the Grenache lovers out there and will keep for 10-15 years. Despite its rich, powerful style, this beauty just glides over the palate. Bravo!" (08/2018) 95 points Robert P...

92 points James Suckling: "From a single parcel of old bush-vine grenache on red-slate soil, this has aromas of dried red flowers and raspberries with leaves and gentle pastry notes. The palate has a very plush and ripe core of raspberry flavors with some red plums and redcurrants The tannins finish very ripe. " (11/2020) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The top Garnacha is the 2017 La Ermita de Santa Bárbara, produced with grapes from a vineyard in the village of Tabuenca in Campo de Borja, low-yielding 50-year-old vines on red soils. The gra...

98 points Decanter: "Full-bodied, generous in fruit and glycerol. The tannins and acidity seem to meld together into a single vertebral column. The alcohol is present, lending sweetness rather than heat. Remarkably elegant for a wine of these dimensions, with great, rising, upright flavours and structure. This is a very special wine with a long finish. Parcels of Grenache planted on lieux-dits Chapouin, La Janasse and La Crau, the oldest planted in 1912. Drinking Window 2026 - 2038. (MW)" (09/2021) 95-97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pap...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Fresh aromas of pink grapefruit, light rose and soft strawberry start the nose on this bottling. There is a firm tension to the sip, where a citrus-driven experience jumps from grapefruit rind into light plum flavors. (MK)" (11/2021) K&L Notes: Made from 100% sustainably farmed vineyard in the cool-climate Edna Valley AVA, this wine exudes the ocean influence that so defines these vineyards and this growing region. The calcareous soils of uplifted marine sediment help to accentuate the wine's bracing and refreshing profi...

94 points James Halliday: "Hand picked from 2 very old vineyards, in Blewitt Springs and Clarendon, on sand and clay respectively. I have criticised earlier vintages of this wine as abstemious and ascetic. Grenache, after all, is a later ripener equipped with joyous fruit and (when made well) a jittery kit of briary tannins to confer a whiff of savouriness. And so it goes. Lots of whole-berry florals and juby red-fruit riffs. Complex hints of orange rind, sassafras, turmeric and clove, to boot. Warmth and mineral tannic rasp as an effortless whole. Delic...

90 points Decanter: "This 100% Garnacha rosado comes from old vines grown on some of Rioja's highest vineyards at 790m above sea level. It’s salmon pink in colour and shimmers in the glass. Grippy, fresh and full, there’s watermelon and pomegranate on the nose and a red cherry tang on the mid-palate which delights with a nice balance between fruit and acid. Richer than Provence pinks and more interesting for it. (CW)" (06/2021) K&L Notes: This is a 100% Garnacha rosé from Rioja Alavesa. The fruit was selected specifically to make rosé from vineyards th...

An incredibly friendly red from 70-year-old Garnacha vines vinified in massive large oak casks (read: fruit leads the way here). Located in the Campo de Borja appellation just south of Navarra in the north of Spain and east of Rioja, this region calls itself the "Empire of Garnacha" and represent some of the best quality for price ratio reds made from Garnacha.

Native South African Bryan MacRobert grew up in a farming family, and has been quietly making some of that country's best value wines. He fell in love with a girl from Rioja as well as the region's wines (we forget in which order) but quickly became fascinated with the inimitable terroirs and endless potential for wines in the region. A proponent not only of organic viticulture, but also a strong believer in the importance of legacy organically cultivated vines on top quality sites, Bryan is picky about where he grows and sources vines. The winemaking is...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "All Grenache brought up in demi–muids and aged on lees for 8 months, the medium ruby/purple hued color of the 2019 Cuvée Nicolas is followed by a killer bouquet of kirsch liqueur, savory spices, cured meats, and peppery garrigue. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and gorgeously textured, it has wonderful richness with no sensation of weight or heaviness. It’s another insane value from this team." (03/2021) K&L Notes: Jean-Marc Lafage has knocked it out of the park once again with this high-quality, low-cost stunner of a wine. Domaine...

93 points James Suckling: "Sweet-berry, watermelon and orange aromas follow through to a full body with soft, fine tannins and a fruity finish. Friendly and delicious." (08/2021) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The regional blend 2020 Camins del Priorat, produced with grapes from 101 plots from eight villages in Priorat, is a blend of 55% Garnacha, 15% Syrah, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 8% Cariñena, higher in Garnacha and lower in Cariñena, like in the majority of 2019s. That gives the wines freshness and elegance, vivacity and flu...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Dark and deep aromas of black cherry, sarsaparilla, baked earth and crushed rocks show on the nose of this bottling. It's a hearty display of Grenache, offering roasted cherry and berry flavors as well as cola and cracked pepper spices. (MK)" (10/2020) K&L Notes: Despite its southerly latitude, Santa Barbara is home to the state’s coolest wine regions. The coastal mountains run east-west here rather than the usual north-south direction. The county is directly exposed to the ocean, its cold afternoon winds, and chilly night-t...

94 points John Gilman: "This is the first 'stand alone' Grenache bottled by Halcón Vineyards, with the wine having been fermented with forty percent whole clusters, indigenous yeasts and it was raised in a single, five hundred liter puncheon of used French oak. It comes in at an even fourteen percent alcohol and delivers a superb young nose of raspberries, cherries, sweet stem tones, smoked meats, pepper, garrigue and a very complex base of soil tones. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, peppery and precise, with great transparency and grip, a s...

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "Aromas of potpourri, white pepper, charcuterie, crushed flowers, soot and raspberry captivate on the nose. Exuberant and outrageously flavorful on the palate, intense accents of smoked meat and earth arise alongside the fruit. An extremely long finish of earth and flowers completes it. (SS)" (10/2019) 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Not yet released when I tasted it, the 2016 Grenache la Paciencia Vineyard has a nose that opens with a bang, boasting majestic and explosive notes of dusty red fruit—raspberries, cherr...

This winery, run by New Zealand-born winemaker Angela Osborne, was founded in 2007. Antonio Galloni praises the project, saying: "Angela Osborne is making some of the most distinctive Rhône-varietal wines in the Central Coast. Whole cluster fermentation, crushing by foot, indigenous malolactics, aging in mostly neutral oak, racking following lunar phases and a generally minimalist aesthetic are some of the signatures in the wines Angela Osborne has dedicated to her late grandmother Grace."

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Gorgeous framboise and ripe strawberry fruits as well as spice, herbes de Provence, and wildflower notes emerge from the 2018 Grenache The Boy Powerline Vineyard, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a seamless, elegant texture and outstanding length. This is another thrilling Grenache from this team that does everything right. " (05/2021) 96 points James Suckling: "A lovely Grenache with ripe strawberry, white pepper and hints of hazelnut on both the nose and palate. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a spicy finish. 100% wh...

2019 Domaine de la Janasse "Chaupin" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I was able to taste the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin on two occasions, rating it one point higher on one of those as well. Incredible notes of red and black fruits, violets, scorched earth, ground pepper, and Provençal garrigue notes define the nose, and it’s a darker, richer, slightly more powerful wine than usual, while still showing the inherent elegance and finesse this cuvée always shows. Give bottles 2-3 years and enjoy over the following 15-20. Don’t miss it! (JD) 98+" (11/2021) 98 points Wine Enthusiast: "This ...

2010 Domaine de Monpertuis "Secret de Gabriel" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Aged only in older foudre in comparison and a blend of mostly old vine Grenache (90% Grenache, 5% Mourvedre, and 5% Cinsault), the 2010 Secret de Gabriel is a beauty! Showing thrilling, Grenache dominate aromas of blackberry, licorice, roasted meats, pepper, and hints of leather, this powerful, full-bodied 2010 has a structured, focused feel in the mouth and comes across as very traditional and age-worthy. While beautifully textured, rich, and balanced, it is still tightly wound, with chewy, mouth coating tannin and in need of 3-5...

Winery notes: We speculate the vines were planted around 1914. The Vineyard is planted on a gentle slope in classic Alexander Valley heavily cobbled, aluvial soils. The vines are naturally low yielding, but produce big, bunches of bountiful fruit. This early release of our first Sceales Vineyard Old Vine Grenache is made to highlight and showcase the stunning, vibrant fruit from this amazing vineyard. 100% Grenache. 50% carbonic maceration. 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "First made in 2010 and a cellar selection of lots that needed additional time barrel, the 2011 Late Bloomer is 100% Grenache that saw 36 months in 25% new French oak. It's an awesome Grenache that gives up lots of kirsch, blackberries, sweet licorice, spice-box and dried underbrush. Full-bodied, sexy and seamless, it shows more and more spice characteristics with time in the glass, has a great mid-palate (which is lacking from the vast majority of Grenache cuvees in California) and no shortage of length on the fi...

2019 Bosquet des Papes "A la Gloire de Mon Grand Père" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Almost all Grenache, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape A La Gloire De Mon Grand-Père comes from the La Gardiole lieu-dit and was aged 80% in demi-muids and 20% in foudre. Its deep purple/plum color is followed by a stunning array of black cherry, blackberry, and ripe strawberry fruits as well as candied flowers, orange blossom, and toasted spice. As with the old vine cuvée, the tannins have a firm edge and it's built with short-term cellaring in mind, yet the purity is brilliant, I love its balance, and this is just a stunning Grenache...

Alex Baer, proprietor, and winemaker for Allbaer has one of the more impressive resumes you'll ever come across. He got his start working in the Barossa Valley on South Australia working at Elderton winery. Elderton have some of the the oldest Shiraz vines in the region dating back to the 1860s. Upon returning to his home in Paso Robles he then worked for Guillaume Fabre of L'Aventure and Clos Selene. Next it was off to Napa Valley to work at Realm with Benoit Touquette, and then the icing on the cake, his dream job working at Sine Qua Non with Manfred K...

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A new vineyard release, the 2018 Grenache Fiddleneck Vineyard is cut from the same cloth yet offers a touch more fruit, with lots of wild strawberries and blueberries interwoven with violets, chalky minerality, and peppery herbs. Medium to full-bodied, with good concentration, firm yet ripe tannins, and a great finish, it's another Grenache that demands bottle age." (05/2021) 94 points James Suckling: "Redcurrants, wild strawberries, melon and baking spices on the nose. Some cloves, too. Full-bodied with creamy tannins. Vibrant ...

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Starting with the 2017 Grenache Sur Echalas Vineyard, this beauty is the spitting image of a great vintage of Rayas and offers a complex bouquet of black raspberries, white pepper, spring flowers, and sappy herbs. These all carry to a medium to full-bodied, ethereal Grenache that has a light, graceful texture, silky tannins, and a great finish. It shows the more elegant, almost Pinot Noir-like style of Grenache on the palate and is flawlessly balanced." (04/2020) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Power and elegance. The ...

2018 Fingers Crossed (Faethm) "Off The Record" Santa Maria Valley Grenache
New!
98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "It has a rich, savory, almost Rayas-like bouquet of gamey red and black fruits, ground pepper, toasted spice, spring flowers, and hints of bloody meat. Beautifully textured, full-bodied, and elegant on the palate, with plenty of stem influence, this complex, layered, brilliantly done 2018 is going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and keep for 10-15 years. It’s a stunning example of Grenache from California!" (08/2020) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Medium garnet-purple in color, it kicks off with meaty scents o...

2019 Faethm "Fingers Crossed - Bien Nacido Vineyard" Santa Maria Valley Grenache
New!
Antonio Galloni comments on the winery in June 2021 for Vinous, "I was blown away by the wines I tasted with Nikolas and Julia Krankl this past summer. Working out of a tiny winery that is essentially in their backyard, the Krankls are making gorgeous, distinctive wines. The Krankls describe 2019 as a year with a long, cool growing season and a wide harvest window."

94 points Decanter: "A fairly pale colour. Fresh, elegant, cherry-scented start, a little orange zest and raspberry. Generous in glycerol, quite jellied on the palate. The acidity helps to cut through the fat and alcohol – and the alcohol is high. Tannins however are fairly gentle and slight, classic of a sandy terroir. Ripe and solaire, very 2018, but has elegance and admirable freshness. 2,500 bottles made. Vines of over 100 years of age, a 1.2ha parcel of sand on the north of lieu-dit La Crau. Fermented in concrete, aged in old barriques. (MW)" (02/20...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Grenache 2 2 Tango is terrific. A blend of 76% Grenache, 15% Graciano, and the rest Syrah, sourced from multiple sites throughout the Central Coast (mostly Ballard Canyon), it has a cool, lively, incredibly elegant style to go with textbook Grenache notes of red and blue fruits, ground pepper, and herbes de Provence. It has fabulous purity of fruit, and I’m a fan. Drink bottles over the coming 7-8 years." (09/2021)
Price: $39.95

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "There are two Grenache releases. First, the 2019 Grenache Lumiere Larner Vineyard comes from a site in Ballard Canyon and was destemmed and aged in 25% new French oak. Its ruby/translucent color is followed by a pretty, perfumed, medium-bodied Grenache offering supple tannins, wonderful purity, and notes of herbes de Provence, white pepper, and both red and black fruits. Seemingly part Grenache and part Pinot Noir, this seamless effort will keep for 7-8 years."

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Du Quet checks in as 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre brought up mostly in concrete, yet with 10% in old barrels. It's another heavenly, monster of a wine from this estate that boasts a dense ruby/plum color as well as a kaleidoscopic array of red and black fruits, Provençal garrigue, ground pepper, cured meats, and new saddle leather. Uber-rich, full-bodied, and incredibly concentrated, yet never heavy, it has a thrilling multi-dimensional texture, loads of tannins, and a heavenly finish. Hedonism...

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Grenaches De Pierre is a step up and has a wonderfully fresh, pure character as well as full-bodied aromas and flavors of black raspberries, morello cherries, new leather, herbes de Provence, and loamy earth. Pure, perfumed, and already complex, with incredible elegance, it's another gorgeous wine from this estate that can be enjoyed any time over the coming 15 to 20 years." 96 points Decanter: "Blackberry, star anise and juniper. Only medium-bodied for a Châteauneuf, but this has plenty of impact and intensity. Lovely bright acid line and sense of freshness from start to finish. Silky and voluptuous. (MW)" (10/2020) 93-95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Leading off the 2019 Châteauneuf du Pape, all of which were tasted from barrel, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Safres should equal or surpass the 2018 as it has the same level of elegance and finesse, yet even better mid-palate depth and concentration. It’s beautifully done and we...

2019 Domaine Pierre Usseglio "Cuvée Mon Aïeul" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "One of the top handful of wines in the vintage, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée De Mon Aïeul is all Grenache, from the different terroirs (one sand, one clay, and one limestone) that was 50% destemmed and aged all in older demi-muids. Reminding me of the 2007 with its incredible perfume of ripe black raspberries, strawberries, flowery incense, peppery and Provençal garrigue, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, expansive texture, gorgeous tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish. A wine of incredibly purity, pre...

94 points Decanter: "Like his other cuvées, this has quite a pale, cherry-tinged colour with strawberry and a touch of sweetly earthy beetroot on the nose and sweet strawberry on the palate. It's an enjoyably low-extraction style, brimming with plump, juicy strawberry and a touch of caramel in the background. This is good now, and will be good with age too. Distinctive. From old vines at the south of lieu-dit La Crau, galets roulés. Fermented in concrete, aged in old barriques. (MW)" (02/2021) 93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Based on 100% Grenache sourced from...

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2018 Sine Qua Non "Profuga" California Grenache ((97-100JD), (97-99RP), (95-97VN)). Jeb Dunnuck: "Mostly destemmed (there was 41% stems from the Grenache) and aging in just 37% new French oak, this heavenly beauty has a rare mix of elegance and richness that just begs to be drunk already. Loads of kirsch liqueur, spiced meats, charcuterie, herbes de Provence, and peppery notes define the bouquet, and this full-bodied Grenache is flawlessly balanced, has silky, polished tannins, and a monster of a finish." Bid on this bottle of 2012 Sine Qua Non "Stein" Central Coast Grenache (97RP, (95-97VN)). Vinous: "The 2012 Grenache Stein is incredibly refined, silky and pure, with bright red and blue-hued fruits. Today, the flavors are primary, so readers will have to be patient get the full breadth of aromas, flavors and textures. The Stein is a decidedly feminine, gracious Grenache that impresses for its textural beauty and nuance. I imagine it will provide a long and broad drinking window of pure pleasure over the next 15-20 years. This is an absolutely gorgeous wine from Sine Qua Non. The final blend is 76% Grenache, 16% Syrah and 8% Mourvèdre; 53% from Eleven Confessions, 29% from Cumulus, 9% The Third Twin and 9% Bien Nacido. The 2012 was done with 29% whole clusters and will spend around 22 months in French oak (14%) prior to its scheduled bottling this summer. (AG)" (08/2015)
Starting Bid: $190.00

Bid on this bottle of 2015 Sine Qua Non "Le Chemin Vers L'Hérésie" California Grenache (99JD, 98RP, 96VN). Jeb Dunnuck: "I loved the 2015 Grenache le Chemin Vers l’Heresie from barrel, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint from bottle. The 2015 checks in as a blend of 75% Grenache, 13% Mourvèdre, 8% Touriga Nacional and the rest Petite Sirah, fermented with 44% whole clusters (all from the Grenache and Mourvèdre) and aged close to two years in mostly used barrel. It sports a ruby/purple-tinged color to go with gorgeous notes of black cherries, framboise, black olives, fennel seed, and peppery herbs. Deep, concentrated, yet also voluptuous and seamless, it’s another tour de force from this estate which consistently produces one of the greatest Grenaches in the world. " (07/2018)
Starting Bid: $220.00

Bid on this bottle of 2016 Sine Qua Non "Pajarito del Amor - Eleven Confessions Vineyard" Sta. Rita Hills Grenache (100JD, 100RP, 98VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Composed of 85.4% Grenache, 7.1% Petite Sirah, 6.9% Syrah and 0.6% Viognier, employing 56% whole cluster, the nose of this opaque, garnet-purple colored uber-Grenache completely explodes with a candied violets, mandarin peel and Indian spices perfume, giving way to a core of bursting-ripe red berries—redcurrants, Morello cherries and raspberries—with an undercurrent of earth, earth and more sweet, fragrant earth. The numbers are telling me this is a full-bodied wine (16.9% alcohol), but the palate is deceptively ethereal, possessing more of a medium to full-bodied feel, thanks in part to bags of well-integrated freshness and fantastic harmony, with soft, silt-like tannins, finishing with loads of savory layers and a fragrant, floral breeze. Yowza, that's good. (LPB)" (08/2020)
