2009 Buty (Connor Lee - Champoux Vineyards) Columbia Valley Merlot - Cabernet Franc (1.5L)
New!
92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Merlot (64%) – Cabernet Franc (36%) offers up a pleasing perfume of dried herbs and spices, incense, creme de cassis, and blackberry. This leads to a medium-bodied, savory, structured wine with excellent balance and length. It will benefit from 2-3 years of additional cellaring and drink well through 2023. Caleb Foster, the vigneron responsible for Buty, is on top of his game as these wines demonstrate. (JM)" (08/2011) K&L Notes: 64% Merlot (Connor Lee) & 36% Cabernet Franc (Champoux)

96 points James Suckling: "Lovely black-cherry, lavender and rose-petal character on the nose. Full body and firm, tight tannins that add structure and depth. Extremely long and intense. Excellent. " (09/2019) 92 points Vinous: "Dark soil, savory spice, and smoky mineral tones waft up from the glass, as Ferrero's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino draws me closer to find black raspberry and balsamic tones in a display which is ripe yet also grounded in the earth. On the palate, dark, fleshy textures give way to ripe black fruits, complemented by savory herbs,...

2009 Buty "Columbia Rediviva - Phinny Hill Vineyard" Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon - Syrah (1.5L) (Previously $50+) (Previously $50+)
New!
94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Supple and sturdy, this beautifully structured blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Syrah, which uses fruit sourced from the estate vineyard, utilizes the best assets of both grapes. The Cabernet gives it both firmness and depth, while the Syrah pipes in vivid, juicy, berry flavors. Still young and primary, the best is clearly yet to come." (02/2013) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Rich and round, with focused, smoky, tangy blackberry and tamarind flavors that sluice through refined tannins on the fine-grained finish." (10/201...

91 points James Suckling: "Big blackberry, chocolate and caramel nose with some spicy oak. This is a pretty bold wine on the palate, but the tannins are not out of line and the overall impression is of expansiveness rather than heaviness. Relatively supple finish. Drink or hold." (08/2018) K&L Notes: A longtime participant in the wine business, Miguel sold wine for wine distributors in the States as well as worked as an export manager. Miguel found success every step of the way, and then decided that rather than retire, he wanted to fulfill his dream o...

97 points James Suckling: "This is a pure and beautiful Brunello with super fine and abundant tannins that are comprehensive and expansive. Builds on the palate. Full body. Round and firm with beautiful fruit and length. Lively and vivid. From organically grown grapes. Needs a year or two to soften, but already gorgeous." (10/2019) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Castello Banfi 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura offers a distinct identity that is recognized by the natural thickness and density of the wine. Warm vintage condition...

94 points International Wine Review: "The 2015 Tenuta di Sesta Brunello di Montalcino begins with a gorgeous aromatic profile of cherries, orange zest, grapefruit juice and fresh ginger which all come together beautifully in this young Brunello. On the palate this is medium-to full-bodied, structured with soft, round tannins and a precise finish that is solid and compact. (RV)" (03/2020) 94 points James Suckling: "Quite understated for a 2015 Brunello, this shows heather, rose petals and tulips. Hints of bark, red licorice and cedar. Medium-to full-bod...

91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is still very fresh with almost no secondary development on the nose and revealing ripe cherry, earth and game aromas followed by exuberant, rich, sweet and persistent flavors. While this is not particularly dense, the precision and minerality make for aA delicious effort that possesses none of the shortcomings of the '97 vintage. " (02/2004)
Price: $449.99

94 points Decanter: "This small cooperative goes from strength to strength under the dynamic management of Aldo Vacca. Montestefano is one of the top sites in the commune of Barbaresco. The nose is still reserved, but there are rich red fruits lurking. Very concentrated on the palate, this is lush and approachable, although one senses there is much in reserve, with excellent ageing potential. It's taut and imposing, with a finish that's tangy and persistent. (SB)" (01/2020) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is the last wine I tasted in thi...

2007 Malescasse, Haut-Médoc (1.5L)
Top Pick!
Château Malescasse is an historic property ideally situated on gravel soils close to the Gironde River just north of Margaux. While it is true that 2007 will never have the power or authority of the finest vintages of the decade, the best wines display a remarkable ripeness and an admirable richness of texture. These are medium to full-bodied reds with soft tannins that will make great near to medium-term drinking. They are priced appropriately and many, like this 2007 Malescasse, offer exceptional value.

We met Marie Chauffray at the Vinifilles tasting in January of 2015 in Montpellier. The Vinifilles (which means "wine girls") is an association of women producers who own and operate their own estates. From growing to winemaking to marketing, they are involved in every aspect of their wineries' successes. I was invited by our friend Francoise Antech-Gazeau (our sparkling wine producer from the Limoux) to visit and taste her wines and meet some of her other grower-producer friends. Chauffray's was one of the most impressive wines we tasted at the event, a...

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Leading off the wines from Mendocino, the straight 2015 Pinot Noir Anderson Valley is terrific. Black raspberries, singed herbs, earth and sappy flower notes all emerge from this supple, textured 2015 that’s already a joy to drink. It’s certainly one of the more approachable in the lineup, yet like all the wines from this estate, it’s going to keep nicely for a decade due to its balance and classic style. This was a terrific lineup of 2015s from the team at Rhys. Across the board, these are tight and structured, with terrific con...

2007 Buty "Columbia Rediviva - Phinny Hill Vineyard" Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon - Syrah (1.5L)
New!
96 points Wine Enthusiast: "From the winery’s Phinny Hill vineyard, the Columbia Rediviva is 48% Cabernet Sauvignon and 52% Syrah. Complex and satiny, it’s a riveting wine, inky and bursting with a sensuous mix of berry, cassis, mocha, loam, cinnamon and spice. Tremendous density and depth; despite its youth the wine curls around the tongue like thick smoke, showing more and more detail. *Cellar Selection*" (05/2011) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Polished, round and complex, this is distinctive and generous with its dark berry, chocolate and pomegranate f...

91 points John Gilman: "These are still quite young vines, having only been planted in 2004, but it is quite clear that the Rhys team is keeping a tight rein on yields here and the 2010 Horseshoe syrah is outstanding. It is not quite as soil-driven as the 2010 Skyline syrah (this vineyard does not share the same limestone found at Skyline), but it is every bit as complex and impressive. I love its octane level of 12.8 percent. The superb nose offers up scents of cassis, grilled venison, black olive, pepper, a nice touch of syrah’s medicinal overtones, a ...

2006 Buty "Columbia Rediviva - Phinny Hill Vineyard" Horse Heaven Hills Red Blend (1.5L) (Previously $100+) (Previously $100+)
New!
96 points Wine Enthusiast: "This first estate-grown bottling of Rediviva is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Syrah. Amazing aromatic complexity grabs you and leads you into the dark interior of the wine, a riot of red and black fruits, moist earth, smoke, anise, herb and toast. Power and elegance combined, with the structure to age for a decade or more. (PG)" (03/2010)

2008 Buty "Columbia Rediviva" Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon - Syrah (1.5L) (Previously $100+) (Previously $100+)
New!
94 points Wine Enthusiast: "A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Syrah—this is a focused wine, with complex nuances of licorice, tar, mineral and lead pencil, but it is buttressed by the compact, concentrated red and black fruits. The dusty tannins are reminiscent of a Napa wine, with excellent length and polish. *Cellar Selection* " (07/2012) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Dense and focused, with fine, chewy tannins around a core of savory cherry, plum and herb flavors, hinting at game bird and fresh mushroom as the finish lingers expressively. 2009 Buty "Rediviva of the Stones" Walla Walla Valley Syrah - Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L) (Previously $100+) (Previously $100+)
New!
93 points Wine & Spirits: "Walla Walla’s famous rocks show through in this blend of three-quarters syrah and one-quarter cabernet, coming through in a lively meaty scent to go with a grounding of cedar and plum. The flavors are dense, savory and vinous, finishing with a note of fennel. " (10/2012) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Broad and velvety, filled out nicely with rich blueberry, licorice and black olive flavors that push against refined tannins on the fresh, open-weave finish." (11/2012) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Sharp and herbal, this new Redivi...

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "Fragrant and full bodied, this structured red has enticing aromas evoking woodland berry, balsamic aromas of pine, rose petal and exotic spice. The enveloping palate delivers crushed raspberry, succulent Marasca cherry, licorice and nutmeg alongside firm, tightly knit tannins. Fresh acidity lends tension and balance. *Editors' Choice* (KO)" (01/2020) 96 points Wine Spectator: "An opulent and complex version, boasting cherry, strawberry, cut hay, iron and tobacco aromas and flavors. Firms up nicely on the finish, with terrif...

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good dark ruby; slightly hazy. Sappy aromas of black cherry, currant, espresso and earth. Silky and stuffed with fruit. Acidity (from the substantial Petit Verdot component?) is still a bit pronounced, but this wine has the sheer extract to harmonize with bottle aging. Quite powerfully structured and very long on the aftertaste, though not as subtle as the regular '96. (ST)" (06/1999)

2017 Spottswoode "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)
Top Pick!
97 points International Wine Review: "The 2017 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is absolutely fantastic, and one of the highlights of the entire vintage. 2017 presented its challenges, with hail, hot summer temperatures and wildfire, but Spottswoode was able to complete harvest before the fires began and they had no impact on the wines. The wine itself is composed of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 4% Merlot which spent 20 months in French oak (60% new). The result is a seductive wine that displays a wonderful combination of elegance a...

95 points James Suckling: "A very elegant and polished Margaux with great structure and an attractive touch of herbal freshness, then a delicate touch of sweetness at the long, fine finish. A blend of 38 per cent cabernet sauvignon, 52 per cent merlot, six per cent cabernet franc and four per cent petit verdot." (02/2019) 94 points Vinous: "The 2016 Labégorce comes from a property that has really been getting its act together in recent years. It has a gorgeous, very pure blackberry, raspberry and pressed violet bouquet, almost understated, but there is...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Beautifully textured and rich in blackcurrant flavors and tannins, this is a generous wine. The fruits and the dusty tannins partner each other well giving structure, concentration, a sense of poise and final freshness. Drink this wine from 2026. (RV)" (03/2021) 94 points Wine Spectator: "Ripe and focused, with a lovely core of steeped plum, fig and cassis notes laced liberally with graphite and applewood. A violet note chimes bright on the finish. Absolutely rock solid. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. (JM)" (...

97 points James Suckling: "Very rich and exotic with blackberry, black-tea, graphite and lead-pencil aromas. Full-bodied, dense and structured with lots of ripe tannins and a long, flavorful finish of currants and forest floor, combined with fresh mushrooms and bark. Needs four to five years to show its true potential. Try after 2024." (02/2019) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Lynch Bages comes charging out of the gate with pronounced cassis, chocolate-covered cherries, mulberries and menthol notions, back...

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is another benchmark wine from Tuscany that shows the incredible potential of this iconic vintage. This beautiful single-vineyard Sangiovese reveals a graceful side with dark fruit intensity, cherry, plum, fresh violets and tilled earth. Tar, tobacco and licorice appear as delicate background tones, giving more volume and texture to the wine's sensorial impact. Vigna del Sorbo shows its own precise identity that is fiercely faithful to Sangiovese, but that ...

98 points Vinous: "The 2015 I Sodi di San Niccolò is just stratospheric. That's pretty much all there is to it. Plush, deep and explosive, the 2015 possesses magnificent depth. The 15% Malvasia Nera gives tannic backbone and energy to balance the wine's natural richness. Sweet red cherry, cedar, smoke, tobacco and licorice build in a racy, flamboyant Sodi that hits all the right notes. In a word: stunning! 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall from Napa is another blockbuster, exhibiting an opaque bluish purple color, notes of charcoal, graphite, blackberry, chocolate and exotic spices, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a long, long finish. Like most 2013s, it is just hinting at its ultimate potential, but this wine is loaded and exciting. (RP)" (12/2016) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine is made to highlight the vintage and best vineyards, relying heavily on the producer’s top-end site, Sacrashe. A hugely cons...

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "From a 28.5-hectare vineyard overlooking the Gironde River on the northern side of Saint-Estephe, the 2016 Château Charmail is one of those hidden gems in the vintage that should be snatched up by readers. It’s a medium to full-bodied, elegant, classic wine that offers lots of darker fruits (cassis and blackberry), spice, new saddle leather, and leafy herbs as well as a kiss of damp earth. It has terrific balance and is going to keep for 15-20 years. The blend is 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and the rest...

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A tour de force from this team, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard Colesworthy is a barrel selection from this site and I believe it’s brought up all in new Darnajou barrels. It’s a quintessential 2018 with its more reserved, elegant, yet incredibly concentrated style, and like its sibling, it has a beautiful, savory style that includes a wealth of red and black fruits as well as espresso, tobacco leaf, cedar pencil, and dried flowers. It’s actually more reserved and backward than the straight single vine...

Silver Oak was founded to focus on Cabernet Sauvignon in 1972 by entrepreneur Raymond Twomey Duncan and winemaker Justin Meyer, and makes two key wines based on their respective AVAs. The 2016 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with a combined 5% of the other Bordeaux varietals and was aged in American oak (50% new) from Silver Oak's own cooperage. A classic nose of cassis and bramble fruits along with vanilla, sage, and mint reverberate on the palate with a pop of red berry fruit. 96 points John Gilman: "This wine has now been very shut down for the last four or five years, and though there is so much raw material here that the wine is still a joy to drink, bottles sampled today only represent twenty-five percent of what this wine will show at its glorious apogee. The bouquet is unmistakably Cheval, with scents of black cherries, bell pepper, dark chocolate, menthol, tobacco, herbs, espresso and vanillin oak wafting from the glass. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep, black fruity, and totally dense at the center, with exc...

99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "This iconic site located outside of St. Helena always produces a rich, powerful wine, and the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is no exception, offering loads of black and blue fruits, gravelly earth, chocolate, and Asian spice notes as well as a full-bodied, opulent, sexy profile on the palate. With a beautiful sense of freshness, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish, this gorgeous effort needs 2-3 years of bottle age and will cruise for 30 years or more." (08/2020)

96 points John Gilman: "The 2014 Alpine Hillside bottling of pinot noir from Rhys Vineyards is once again my favorite of this absolutely stellar roster of 2014 pinots from this great Santa Cruz Mountain property. The wine offers up a marvelous nose of black plums, black cherries, espresso, woodsmoke, black minerality, fresh thyme and cedary wood. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and tightly-knit, with a marvelous core, great mineral drive, bright acids and outstanding length and grip on the ripely tannic and laser-like finish. Stolpman's "Love You Bunches" used to be released around Valentine's Day, but in 2020, why wait? Why wait, indeed, when the carbonic maceration method employed by this innovative Central Coast winery, which keeps the "bunches" of grapes intact during fermentation, and greatly lessens harsh tannin extraction while keeping acidity high and alcohol low, from an earlier picking, results in an early-drinking, fresh and fruity Sangiovese wine! Here's an artifact of "2020" you'll be glad to have finished, with joy!

93-96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Another winner from Margaux is the 2018 Château Labégorce, which is an interesting blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot (although I was given slightly different blends for the two samples tasted). Aging in 40% new oak, this deeply colored effort offers a beautiful perfume of blueberries, raspberries, flowers, and spice. It’s medium to full-bodied, has remarkable purity, and fine tannins, and should be approachable right out of the gate. It’s worth mentioning this ...

97-98 points James Suckling: "This is mind blowing stuff. Notes of mint, minerals, currants, blackberries, with hints of cedar. Full bodied, very velvety and chewy. This won't be out until 2013. Winemaker believes this could be the best one yet, and I have to agree. Barrel sample. (JS)" (02/2011) 98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Made entirely of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2009 Hillside Select has a deep garnet color. 98 points James Suckling: "There’s an intensely ripe, fresh and vibrant edge to this focused, elegant and assertively pure cabernet that delivers attractive blueberry and cassis aromas in stylish form. The palate arrives as a precise and focused suite of ripe blueberry and blackberry flavors, building smoothly to an attractively crisp and even-paced finish. Another superb edition of this wine. 95 points Vinous: "The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain offers good density, but in more of a medium-bodied style that is quite a bit more approachable than is the norm here. A whole range of inky Howell Mountain fruit, graphite, grilled herb, licorice, spice, chocolate, and lavender nuances open up in a brooding, resonant Cabernet that needs a few years in bottle to start drinking well. There is plenty of the structure readers have come to expect from Dunn, but less youthful austerity, which is not a bad thing at all. (AG) 95+" (01/2020) 95 poi...

Lush, fat and full in the mouth, with superb concentration and richness. A seamless wine with great Chateauneuf du Pape character. Complicating notes of tar and chocolate.
