1988 Gloria, St-Julien

Wine Spectator: "Mushroom and berry aromas, with hints of mint and currant. Medium- to full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Delicate and harmonious. (JS, Web-2009)"
Price: $74.99

93 points Wine Spectator: "Shows plenty of mint, currant and mineral character on the nose. Full-bodied, with big and soft tannins. Plenty of mushroom, berry and fruity character. Opulent and beautiful. (JS, Web-2009)" 92 points Vinous: "The 1988 Léoville Barton has a lovely nose of brambly black fruit, melted tar, tobacco leaf and undergrowth, very traditional in style but after three decades, remaining fresher and more vibrant than many of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied and possesses more fruit and greater density than the Langoa-Barton. I lov...

Bid on this bottle of 1988 Domaine Bouchard Père & Fils Corton "Château de Beaune". According to Jasper Morris: "The Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pére et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731 though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house, Joseph Henriot, acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Today Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet while the wines are made by Philippe Prost who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and has enabled the family to process all wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or (Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune)"

Bid on this bottle of 1988 Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac (96DC, 94RP, 94VN, 94WS). Decanter: "This was a vintage that remained tight and closed for a long time. They are just starting to drink this at the chateau apparently, as Salin says it is their dinner wine right now. The salinity is coming through, giving a sappy grip through the mid palate, the effortless racy elegance of an older Cabernet Sauvignon with its truffles, smoked cedar, its grilled black fruits. Colour wise this is very much still intact, just a slight bricking at the edges. A lovely example of how you should never give up on wines from great estates – there will always be a moment when the terroir will out, as we saw on recent tastings of the 1975. The 1988 is certainly having one of those moments, and its long finessed finish should be savoured. 72% Cabernet Sauvignon. (JA)" (12/2016)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1988 Gentaz-Dervieux "Côte Brune - Cuvée Réservée" Côte-Rôtie (98VN, 96JG). Vinous: "I tasted the 1988 Côte-Rôtie Côte Brune from Domaine Gentaz-Dervieux after a flight of rather formulaic Chapoutier wines. The Gentaz-Dervieux is on a completely different level. Showing some signs of bricking on the rim, the bouquet is pixelated in clarity, adorned with effervescent scents of red cherries, garrigue, fennel, orange blossom and wilted rose petals. The palate does not stint on fruit intensity, and yet the finesse and grace of this Côte-Rôtie is quite profound. Perfectly balanced, long and tender, the 1988 is a stunning Northern Rhône, and yet the munificent donor said he had experienced better bottles. The mind boggles. (NM)" (07/2018)
