2018 Domaine Jaffelin Fixin 1er Cru "Hervelets"
Top Pick!
96 points Decanter: "*Decanter Gold Medal 2020 Decanter World Wine Awards* Striking blackberry fruit and floral notes melded with a beautiful mineral complexity; with a vivacious acid backbone and sublimely melting tannins, this wine has great ageing potential." (09/2020) K&L Notes: Founded in 1816, Jaffelin is a négociant that produces wines mostly from Burgundy's village-level vineyards and mostly from the region's lesser known appellations. This Fixin shows the kind of quality and value that can be had in these AOCs if one knows where to look and wh...

2018 Philippe Leclerc Bourgogne Rouge "Les Bons Bâtons"
Top Pick!
Philippe grew up in the vineyards and learned to tend vines from his father. He produced his first vintage in 1979 and has since garnered a loyal following. The fruit for this wine comes from Les Bons Bâtons, a small vineyard located across the main road from Chambolle-Musigny. The vineyard is one of the few Bourgogne-level designations allowed to carry the vineyard name, and the quality is closer to that of a 1er Cru than village level. This bottle will also benefit from some breathing time. The nose is quiet at first but after an hour, wild strawberrie...

2016 Domaine Vincent & Sophie Morey Santenay 1er Cru "Passetemps" (Elsewhere $45) (Elsewhere $45)
Top Pick!
90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Santenay 1er Cru Passetemps Rouge offers attractive brambly red berry fruit on the nose, quite natural and more refined than the Les Hâtes. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine line of acidity, plenty of juice cranberry and blackcurrant notes that belie the structure underneath. This is an excellent Santenay that deserves a couple of years in bottle for the tannins to soften. (NM)" (12/2017) Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A very pretty nose is composed by notes of spicy red and dark c...

91-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A cooler and equally reserved nose features shy notes of various red berries that are cut with hints of wild black currant, spice and violet whiffs. There is excellent energy and a relatively sophisticated texture to the medium-bodied flavors that flash a taut muscularity on the dusty, serious and youthfully austere finish that displays terrific depth and persistence. Excellent and very promising. *Burghound Outstanding!!*" (01/2021) 91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Bursting with aromas of blackberri...

Château de la Charrière is one of our most popular direct import producers and a label that easily represents the best bang for your buck we carry in Burgundy. Formerly run by Yves Girardin, the business is now run by his young son Benoit, who definitely has modernized the winemaking a bit since his first vintage in 2011. Whereas the wines were a bit funky and rustic previously, the past few vintages are much cleaner, showcasing the pureness of the Pinot Noir by de-stemming completely so as to remove excess tannic structure.

The wines of this family domaine have been a staple here at K&L since the 1994 vintage when Franck and Betty Millet drove a long way (to Beaune!) on Easter Sunday to meet Clyde and crew to present their wines. We love these wines for their freshness, charm and affordability. The low-alcohol Millet Sancerre Rouge is 100% Pinot Noir, partially barrel aged, and absolutely delicious. Aromas of cherries and purple flowers give way to a vibrant, crunchy red-fruited palate with just a enough tannins to balance out the juicy fruit.

Jancis Robinson: "All in order, firm but rounded tannins. Finishes slightly dry and chewy at the moment but will come round. (AC)" (01/2020) K&L Notes: Formed in 1957 by a small group of growers in the village of Orches in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune region, Nuiton-Beaunoy has grown to now represent more than 80 growers and operates a co-op winery Cave des Hautes-Côtes. Winery notes: "Purple colour with hints of ruby. With a hint of spice, the nose reveals the scent of raspberry and blackcurrant, with a definite hint of minerality. The perfect expressio...

2019 Domaine Bart Marsannay Rouge "Champs Salomon"
New!
90-92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Perfumed and very pretty aromas speak of elegant dark Pinot fruit that is cut with interesting hints of spiced tea, blood orange and whiff of humus character. There is both good volume and intensity to the tautly muscular, dusty and impressively complex finale that exhibits sneaky good length. This is also relatively tightly wound as the compact tannins will need time to resolve. *Outstanding*" (01/2021) K&L Notes: 89-92 points Jasper Morris for Inside Burgundy: "20% whole bunch vinification and 25% new wood on ...

93-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A much spicier nose is cooler and more elegant with its beautifully pure and layered mix of both red and blue pinot fruit compote along with perfumed floral nuances. The vibrant and delineated medium-bodied flavors possess a sophisticated mouthfeel while displaying abundant mineral influence on the rich, sappy and focused finale that just goes on and on. This is a knockout and should age and improve effortlessly for the better part of two decades. *Burghound Don't Miss Outstanding!!*" (01/2021) 93-95 points Robe...

From K&L On The Trail blog: "Jean-Michel Giboulot took over the family business in 1982 and has put together one of the best bang-for-your-buck portfolios in all of Burgundy over the last three-plus decades. His wines from Burgundy's Savigny-lès-Beaune appellation are known as great values, and both the reds and whites are equally strong. Giboulot's wines straddle the line between traditional and modern, with reds that have crunchier fruit and fine tannins, but plenty of ripeness and purity. 2019 Domaine François Lamarche Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Back In Stock!
92-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A softly spicy and markedly floral nose blends aromas of red currant, raspberry and newly turned earth. There is very good underlying energy and punch to the succulent and seductive yet powerful and concentrated broad-shouldered flavors that display a touch of warmth on the detailed, very firm, serious and austere finale. This is also potentially excellent, but this is definitely not a wine to engage in its early youth." (01/2021) 94 points Decanter: "Lamarche has three parcels in the Clos de Vougeot. There is o...

2018 Domaine Jean-Marc & Hughes Pavelot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru "Aux Guettes"
New!
94 points Decanter: "It's tricky to choose between Hugues Pavelot's Savigny Premiers Crus, such is their consistent quality in 2018, but this very low-yielding 1.5-ha site is truly outstanding. Sourced from very poor, limestone-based soils, it's chiselled, refreshing and sappy, with well-judged 20% whole bunches, fine, floral fruit flavours and just a hint of oak spice. (TA)" (10/2019) 93 points John Gilman: "Hugues Pavelot’s 2018 version of aux Guettes is also a stellar bottle in the making, with a far more black fruity personality than the lovely les...

2018 Domaine Faiveley Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes
Top Pick!
93 points Decanter: "If you want to taste a textbook Gevrey-Chambertin, this is a very representative blend combining fruit from over 30 different parcels across the appellation. With an average vine age of 45 years, it's a sweet, glossy Pinot Noir with perfumed 30% new wood, caressing tannins and layers of red berry and bramble fruit sweetness. A very harmonious cuvée. (TA)" (10/2019) 93 points James Suckling: "Subtle aromas of sweet strawberries and hints of citrus. Violets, too. Full-bodied and very fruity, but the tannins create a creamy texture an...

2018 Domaine Christophe Buisson Bourgogne Rouge
Top Pick!
According to the importer, "Christophe Buisson is a young, passionate vigneron with all the skills for success. From his home base in Saint-Romain, the little known and thus underappreciated (and undervalued) appellation in the hills behind Meursault, Christophe has been honing his craft for the last decade. Christophe owns land in some of the best sites in Saint-Romain, Sous le Château and La Perrière, sites that would likely be premier cru in a village such as Chassagne-Montrachet."

2019 Aurore Dezat Sancerre Rouge
Top Pick!
Typically when you think Sancerre, you think crisp and chalky white wine. But the region also produces phenomenal Pinot Noir. One of the aspects of Sancerre that makes for great Sauvignon Blanc is the limestone and flint soils, which lend depth of minerality and gorgeous aromatics. These same soil characteristics also make for incredible Pinot Noir with plenty of depth and personality. One of our best new-direct import producers in Sancerre, Aurore Dezat, makes just such a wine. If you love silky, round Pinot Noir with gorgeous dark cherry notes and laye...

93-95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An elegant mix of upper and medium register aromas centers mostly on the red side of the fruit spectrum along with hints of exotic tea, spice and pretty floral elements along with a hint of menthol. There is lovely detail and underlying tension to the moderately powerful medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of punch on the dusty and youthfully austere finish that exhibits first-rate length. 91-94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A markedly spicy nose consists of dark currant, violet and earth nuances where a note of tea can be discerned. There is a lovely inner mouth perfume to the refined, velvety and caressing yet quite serious and tautly muscular flavors that also flash plenty of minerality on the powerful finish that exhibits excellent length. *Sweet Spot Outstanding*" (04/2020) 94 points Decanter: "The richest and inkiest of Hugues Pavelot's highly impressive array of Savigny Premiers Crus in 2018, this is also the firmest and most...

90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A beautiful bouquet of peonies, wild berries, spices and forest floor prefaces the 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet La Goujonne, a medium to full-bodied, layered and complete wine that's deep and elegantly muscular, framed by lively acids and powdery tannins. The best renditions of red Chassagne number among the finest values to be found in the contemporary Côte d'Or, and this cuvée definitely numbers among them. The wines can have an austere reputation, but the version produced by Nicole Lamarche is dense but silky and not overly firm. She contrasts it with the very powerful wines made by Jean-Nicolas Méo and Charles Lachaux. This beautiful wine presents an exquisite balance between a powerful, substantial structure and evocative, seductive fruit. Drinking Window 2021 - 2039. 93-95 points Vinous: "The 2018 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru has an absolutely glorious bouquet of perfumed black cherries, blueberry, potpourri and light violet aromas that are understated and yet focused and delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with a precise opening, and very harmonious and sensual. Pure, mineral-driven red fruit defines the effortless finish. Stunning. 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits Le Prieuré is fleshier and richer than its 2017 counterpart, offering up aromas of cherries and raspberries complemented by hints of peonies and cinnamon. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, its ample core of fruit is underpinned by lively acids and fine, powdery tannins. At the heart of the Verdet family domaine is the south-facing 4.3-hectare Le Prieuré, located in the Hautes-Côtes near the village of Arcenant. Aurélien's father received organic certification f...

It was bottled after 12 months in cask, in order to retain its forward, fetching red berry fruit and silky finesse on the palate. The caressing big-bodied flavors possess excellent mid-palate density and almost painful intensity before concluding in a sappy, powerful and focused finale that is shaped by dense but attractively fine-grained tannins. This is harmonious enough to enjoy now and over the next decade or so. Drink now through 2033. " (04/2021) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Black-cherry richness on the nose of this wine has a hint of tar and chocolate. 91-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Beaune Teurons is a blockbuster. It is dark ruby-colored and offers a super-ripe, intense, and complex nose of black cherries, earth, leather, violets, and perfume. Prodigious quantities of sweet, ripe, juicy, and powerful black cherries captivate the palate in this thick (where's my knife and fork?), profound, and chewy wine. The palate is well balanced with crunchy red fruit, a liberal sprinkling of cracked black pepper and a tensile finish that neatly incorporates the 25% new oak. More recently, after completing technical training, Yves’s son Benoit has joined him, bringing to 11 the consecutive generations of the family to grow wine in Santenay.
