2017 Calera "Mills" Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir (Elsewhere $80) (Elsewhere $80)
Top Pick!
97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard is slightly deeper colored (it's still translucent) and offers a gorgeous nose of ripe redcurrants, cherries, spring flowers, sappy forest floor, and ample spice nuances. With medium to full body, beautiful depth of fruit, and a seamless texture, it's another stunning Pinot Noir from this team that I'd be happy to have in the cellar." (09/2020) 94 points Vinous: "The 2017 Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard is wonderfully expressive right out of the gate. Rose petals, mint, dried herbs, pine and blood or...

2018 Ata Rangi "Crimson" Pinot Noir Martinborough
Top Pick!
94 points Bob Campbell: "Aromatic pinot noir with an appealing mix of cherry, plum, mint, dried herbs, and spicy and stemmy flavours. A supple, attractive wine that's perhaps not as concentrated as its distinguished stable mate, but represents excellent value at this price. A wine of character and class." (09/2019) 94 points Sam Kim: "It’s beautifully ripe and fragrant on the nose showing sweet cherry, plum, thyme and toasted nut characters, followed by a succulent palate that’s fleshy and beautifully flowing. It’s fabulously polished and harmonious, o...

2018 Nor'Wester by Greystone Pinot Noir North Canterbury
Top Pick!
93 points Sam Kim: "Delightfully fruited and inviting, the bouquet shows dark cherry, raspberry, thyme, toasted nut and subtle mushroom characters. The palate is equally satisfying with excellent weight and roundness, wonderfully supported by silky texture and fine-grained tannins, finishing persistent and very tasty." (04/2020) 91 points Bob Campbell: "Supple, savoury pinot noir with dried herb, floral, violet, spice, cherry and raspberry flavours. An appealing wine in a medium-bodied style, with a backbone of bright acidity." (08/2020) 91 points Ja...

A very small three barrel production from Ryan Alfaro. This might be Ryan's inaugural release under the Farm Cottage label, but his Dad has been farming this vineyard for more than a decade and Ryan has experience working with the fruit under his family's eponymous label. The Farm Cottage Pinot is a stunning expression of this vineyard. Fermented entirely whole cluster, the wine is light and translucent in the glass, the nose is explosive with exotic spiced berries, ripe raspberry, Redwood grove, and warm earth. Vibrant, and so silky on the palate. A st...

2018 Quartz Reef "Bendigo Estate Single Vineyard" Pinot Noir Central Otago
Top Pick!
94 points James Suckling: "Always intense and ripe, this has a mix of red-cherry, dark-cherry, currant and black-tea aromas with a dusting of spice and earthy, sappy aromas, as well as violets. The palate has a super fresh, layered and succulent feel with such juicy, soft and supple tannins, wrapped into a smooth framework. Vibrant finish." (12/2020) 93 points Bob Campbell: "Reasonably light in colour but certainly not lacking power, with dark cherry, violet, blackcurrant and spicy oak flavours supported by bright acidity and peppery tannins. A youthfu...

2017 TWR (Te Whare Ra) Pinot Noir Marlborough
Top Pick!
95 points Sam Kim: "Splendidly stylish and complex, the bouquet shows dark cherry, thyme, game and toasted almond characters with nuances of mushroom and fragrant spice. It's wonderfully weighted and seamlessly flowing on the palate with terrific fruit purity together with seductive savoury undertones, leading to a superbly long velvety finish. Grapes were grown in Renwick and Southern Valleys districts. At its best: now to 2030." (02/2020) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This Pinot blends fruit from three vineyards including TWR’s home block of old, biod...

2019 Domaine Sylvain Langoureau Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune "Clos Marc"
Top Pick!
While Domaine Sylvain Langoureau may not be a household name, we anticipate it will become the go-to producer for those who enjoy artfully crafted wines. This family-run estate does everything by hand, is committed to low yields, and focuses on conveying each site's distinctive terroir. Producer notes from Allen Meadows for Burghound: "Sylvain Langoureau has been directing this 9 ha domaine since 1989 which he says is now farmed entirely organically." (06/2020)

95 points James Suckling: "Really ethereal, perfumed nose with dried roses, light red cherries, dried baking spices and leafy tones, too. So complex. The palate builds and holds very long. This is a captivating Pinot for the power, purity and length of ripe red cherries. Thrilling to taste." (06/2021) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Layered and detailed throughout, this wine offers flavors of mixed berries and plums, with delicious accents of chocolate and nougat. There's a burst of barrel toast as it winds down, leading to a harmonious finish. (PG)" (03/2...

2018 Fromm "Cuvée H" Pinot Noir Marlborough
Top Pick!
95 points Bob Campbell: "A blend of Fromm's single vineyard wines that's right up to their very high standards. A solid core of ripe cherry and berry, with a seasoning of savoury, dried herb, spice and nutty oak characters." (04/2020) 95 points James Suckling: "This has a rich array of red cherries and blueberries with a sappy and herbal edge. The palate rolls out attractively mouth-filling, fleshy pinot fruit and carries a long, plush and building wave of tannin. Dark-cherry finish." (12/2020) 95 points Sam Kim: "Offering wonderful fruit purity and ...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Deeper ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir De Villiers Vineyard reveals more black raspberry, sassafras, tea, and spicy notes. It's medium-bodied, with a juicy, elegant style and a great finish." (09/2020) 94 points Vinous: "The 2017 Pinot Noir de Villiers Vineyard is fabulous. Rich, exotic and bold, the 2017 offers striking immediacy. Inky dark fruit, spice, lavender and menthol open up first, followed by a range of more savory, mineral notes that are typical of Mt. Harlan. The interplay of fruit intensity and structure makes for a compe...

92 points Vinous: "Crushed rose petals, mint, sweet red berries and cinnamon are some of the many notes that meld together in the 2012 Pinot Noir San Mateo. A wine of precision and nuance, the 2012 impresses for its balance. Sweet and savory notes from the inclusion of 60% whole clusters add lift on the finish. (AG)" (07/2014) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of 60% Family Farm, 30% Horseshoe and 10% Alpine Vineyard, the 2012 Pinot Noir San Mateo County offers lots of peppery herbs, kirsch, spice-box, cola and dried earth to go with a ...

94 points Vinous: "The 2015 Pinot Noir Bearwallow Vineyard is a total knock-out. Rich, explosive and forward, the 2015 possesses striking fruit intensity and purity in every dimension. Dark red and bluish-hued fruits and ripe, silky tannins add to the wine's immediacy. This is an especially plush style for Rhys, but it works beautifully. The 2015 will be even better in another few years, but it will prove virtually impossible to resist young. (AG)" (08/2017) 93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "There are two wines from the Bearwallow Vineyard in Anderson Valley, wh...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Nicholas Brown and Penelope Naish are part of the new wave of talent in North Canterbury, making organically farmed wines with minimal intervention. There’s a lovely vibrancy of color to this vintage of Pinot, and a raw energy. Oodles of crunchy fresh strawberry notes are backed by cinnamon, clove, flower stalks and stone. The sappy tannins have a surprising bite but an easy, natural presence rather than being oak-driven. There’s beautiful fruit purity and an overall cool climate, unadulterated vibe. " (02/2021) K&L N...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard is another wine with superb integrity in its fruit and terrific overall balance. Juicy red berries, hard candy, flowers, mint and spices are all woven together nicely. The whole clusters are very nicely balanced. There is wonderful focus and vibrancy throughout, leading to a weightless, totally gracious finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. (AG)" (08/2012) 94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Vivid ruby. Sexy, high-pitched aromas of raspberry, candied ...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Hints of earth, leather and black tea weave through this delicate, almost soft-textured wine, giving it delicious complexity that builds with each sip and lingers on the finish. It was aged for 16 months in 23% new French barrels for just a touch of oak spice. " K&L Notes: One of my favorite vineyards in Anderson Valley, Wentzel always seems to deliver the goods. Waits-Mast have coaxed a particularly detailed rendition into bottle this year, don't miss it! (Ryan Woodhouse - K&L Domestic Wine Buyer) Winemaker's Notes: "At a r...

Founded by Raj Parr and Sashi Moorman in 2010, Sandhi has become one of the leading producers in Sta. Rita Hills and Santa Barbara County. The 2019 Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir, is actually 83% from Domaine de la Côte estate. This is one of the most westerly plantings in the region, getting the full effect of the dramatic ocean influence and near constant onshore winds. Vines are very densely planted and farmed organically. Soils are a mix of diatomaceous earth, shale and clay. The wine is fermented with native yeast, 30% whole cluster and aged in entirely...

95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Ruby-red. Explosively perfumed cherry-cola, dark berry liqueur, incense and mineral aromas show superb clarity and depth, with a sexy floral quality building with air. Offers palate-staining black raspberry and spicecake flavors that become sweeter and deeper with air. This rich but strikingly lithe and tensile pinot deftly plays power and depth off of vivacity and finishes sweet, youthfully tannic and extremely long. One of the most impressive Pinots I've tasted from the New World, or Burgundy for t...

95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Vivid ruby-red. Intensely perfumed, mineral-driven red berry, blood orange and potpourri aromas are complemented by deeper-pitched notes of cola and smoky Indian spices. Sweet, focused and light on its feet, offering intense raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a silky, seamless texture. The mineral quality comes back on the endless finish, which is strikingly pure, focused and gently tannic. I was reminded of a high-end Chambolle-Musigny when I tasted this balanced but intensely flavored wine and...

92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An attractively layered and fresh ripe red berry fruit and overtly floral nose offers excellent complexity that continues onto the rich but elegantly rendered medium-bodied flavors that possess a seductive texture and perfect balance on the lingering finish. This should age extremely well as everything is in perfect proportion … That the wines are of very high quality is evident but what is wonderfully refreshing is that the wines are also unique and original. Simply put, they are unlike any other pinots being crafte...

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Vivid red. Strong raspberry and cherry-cola aromas, with suave floral and Asian spices adding complexity. Silky and very fresh, with impressively focused red fruit flavors and a building note of rose pastille. The persistent, gently tannic finish emphatically repeats the red berry and floral notes and lingers with bright, spicy intensity. (ST)" (05/2013) 91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is less obviously floral than the Alpine but slightly more aromatically complex with its elegant aro...

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright violet color. Sexy, highly perfumed scents of musky red and dark berries, incense and Asian spices, with a bright mineral topnote. Fresh, impressively concentrated raspberry and blackberry flavors are firmed by silky tannins and brightened by zesty minerality and a hint of blood orange. Suavely melds richness with energy, finishing on notes of tangy red berry skin and smoky minerals. 93 points John Gilman: "The 2012 Family Farm Vineyard bottling of Pinot from Rhys is another outstanding example of the vintage, delivering an excellent and exotically spiced bouquet of dark berries, black currants, woodsmoke, fresh thyme, mustard seed, dried eucalyptus, beef stock, dark soil tones and a touch of cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and still very primary, with moderate tannins, lovely focus and grip, tangy acids and a long, classy and light on its feet finish. Beautiful juice." 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains is a terrific expression of mountain fruit, especially when tasted beside the San Mateo release. Firm red fruits, dusty stone-like minerality, white flowers and a touch of rose all emerge from this medium-bodied, silky, lively and elegantly styled Pinot Noir. (JD)" (07/2015) 93 points Vinous: "The 2013 Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains shows a much darker side of Pinot, especially next to the San Mateo County, Rhys's other appellation wine. The flavors are bold and deeply ...

93 points John Gilman: "The 2011 Family Farm bottling has come in a tad less ripe than the Home Vineyard (12.8 percent alcohol versus 13-2 percent- both very, very civilized octane numbers in my book!) and as a result the wine is even a touch more red fruity and soil-driven in this vintage. The gorgeously complex nose offers up scents of cherries, beetroot, pomegranate, a great, complex base of soil, vinesmoke, a touch of nutskin, fresh herbs and a lovely, discreet framing of new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and very transpar...

94 points John Gilman: "The 2013 Bearwallow Vineyard pinot noir from Rhys Vineyards is starting to drink very nicely, though like the 2014 Swan Terrace, it is still in climbing mode and will be even better with further bottle age. Today, the bouquet is starting to show the first signs of secondary layering, wafting from the glass in a fine mix of black cherries, dark berries, lovely spice tones, a fine base of dark soil, fresh herb tones, cedar, hints of the cola to come and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and starting to get...

94 points John Gilman: "The 2013 vintage of Family Farm pinot noir is really starting to blossom nicely and this might be the first of the single vineyards I would reach for right now for current drinking from Rhys. The bouquet is deep, pure and beautifully black fruity today, offering up scents of black plums, dark berries, raw cocoa, gamebird, dark soil tones, woodsmoke, hints of the cola notes to come and a touch of new oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and nicely sappy at the core, with good soil signature, suave, modest tannins and...

93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A ripe, spicy and quite densely fruited nose speaks of a pretty mix of both red and blue Pinot fruit along with background hints of cassis. The restrained intense and strikingly well-detailed medium-bodied flavors possess an abundance of mouth coating extract that buffers the firm tannic spine on the impressively complex, long and exquisitely balanced finish. *Outstanding*" (10/2011) 93 points John Gilman: "The Bearwallow bottling is made from purchased grapes and typically shows the slightly warmer aspect of Ander...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Following the Family Farm release, the 2013 Pinot Noir Home Vineyard has more minerality to go with pretty red fruits, spice and mountain wild flower-like nuances. It has plenty of fruit, yet has a core of tight tannin and acidity that only shows on the finish. Textured, balanced, layered and nuanced, it's a classic Rhys Pinot Noir that has everything you could want. Drink it over the coming decade. (JD)" (10/2015) 94 points Vinous: "Huge swaths of tannin provide the backbone of the 2013 Pinot Noir Home Vineyar...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Much more fruit loaded and rounded than the Santa Cruz Mountains release, the 2013 Pinot Noir San Mateo County comes mostly from the Family Farm vineyard, with a touch from Horseshoe. It gives up lots of strawberry, Bing cherry, spice, and floral nuances to go with beautiful fruit and texture on the palate. (JD)" (07/2015) 91 points Vinous: "The 2013 Pinot Noir San Mateo County is bright and decidedly citrus-laced in its profile. Bright red cherry, orange peel, white pepper and savory herbs. The 50% whole clust...

93 points John Gilman: "The 2016 Momtazi Vineyard bottling of pinot noir from Day Wines is the ripest of these 2016s, as it comes in at fourteen percent octane. It is beautifully black fruity on the nose (as all the examples from Momtazi have been that I have been fortunate enough to taste), offering up scents of black plum, sweet dark berry, black tea, balsam bough, a beautiful base of soil tones, chicory, gentle spice tones and a bit of cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and beautifully balanced, with a fine core of fruit, grea...

94 points John Gilman: "The Skyline Vineyard Pinot Noir from Kevin Harvey and his team at Rhys is just stellar in 2011, with its low octane personality (12.6% ABV!) delivering great minerality and nascent complexity on both the nose and palate. The wonderfully complex nose offers up a 'cool fruit' profile of cherries, beetroot, stony minerality, a touch of menthol, thyme, a bit of mustard seed, vinesmoke and a gentle base of new wood. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish and very intensely flavored, with a fine core of fruit, suave, seamless tannins, ...

Vecino is a small vineyard in Potter Valley. The vines are farmed biodynamically. The winemaking for "Ya Moon" is largely carbonic maceration creating a lifted, highly aromatic style of Pinot Noir. Whilst this wine maybe light in color and weight, it is big on flavor!

93 points Wine & Spirits: "With scents of clove and mulled spices, this delivers its flavors in waves of richness, the dark, sumptuous fruit pulsing and precise, notes of ripe cherry, blueberry and olive drawing to a savory finish with bay laurel–scented tannins. Impressive for the price. (PJC)" (04/2020) 92 points James Suckling: "This has attractively fresh aromas of red cherries with some subtle, earth and undergrowth complexity. The palate offers a succulent, assertive core of red-cherry and berry flavors. From biodynamically grown grapes. " (01/20...

90 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Light ruby. An airy upper register nose of red cherry and Pinot fruit that is ever so lightly spiced leads to nicely balanced, rich and almost delicate barely middle weight flavors that possess excellent flavor authority and more finishing power and persistence than the size and weight of the flavors would suggest. This is lovely and decidedly understated in personality and will please those who appreciate restrained Pinot. In a word, lovely. *Outstanding* " (01/2008) K&L Notes: Alesia is a negociant label of Rhys,...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Pinot Noir (San Mateo County) is simply fabulous. Rich dark cherries, crushed flowers, mint and spices burst from the glass. This is a hugely delicious wine from Rhys. The 80% whole clusters are nicely balanced by the sheer depth of the fruit. This is a flat out stunning wine from Rhys. In 2010 the San Mateo is the entry-level Pinot. The 2010 is bottled under San Mateo appellation, as it includes fruit from Bearwallow (in Anderson Valley) rather than the more typical collection of sites from the Santa Cr...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains is an excellent introduction to the house style. Floral aromas lead to layers of dark red fruit in this juicy, accessible Pinot. This is the least expensive Pinot in this lineup but it offers terrific balance, and shows no ill effects whatsoever of being tasted among the vineyard-designate bottlings. Fleshy, supple and wonderfully radiant, it will also drink better young than most, if not all, of those wines. The Santa Cruz Mountains is made from barrels that didn’t make i...

90 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An herb-infused blue and red berry fruit nose that is less obviously ripe than that of the Hillside Cuvée leads to delicious and seriously complex medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a firmly structured finish of impressive length. This is delicious yet reserved and clearly built to age over the medium term....I toured the vineyards located in the Santa Cruz Mountains and they are indeed spectacular and if you have the chance to visit, I highly recommend it. There are varying percentages of destemming but most wi...

92 points Vinous: "I am not sure if the 2012 Pinot Noir The Haven Vineyard Estate will ever fully emerge, as it remains compact, tense and very much closed in on itself. Still, there is a sense of verticality and overall structure that is impossible to miss. Today I am inclined to think all the 2012 needs is time, but readers will have to be patient. The Haven is likely to always remain a powerful, incisive Pinot. (AG) 92+" (01/2015) Jancis Robinson: "Light purplish crimson. Clean, spicy and sweet. Racy lift. Excellent modern Pinot. 90 points Vinous: "Dark red cherry, earthiness, smoke, licorice, and tobacco add the closing shades of nuance. (AG)" (02/2016) K&L Notes: Littorai derives their unique sustainable farming techniques from the fertile cross currents of permaculture, agro-ecology and the agricultural philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, the father of biodynamic farming. In addition to using only natural materials, they avoid all fertilizers. Estate produced compost is their “fertilizer” of choice. For those sites which they do not farm themselves, they use by-the-acre contracts ...

Even with all of its structure, the Hirsch boasts translucent beauty in its aromatics and fruit, with hints of inner sweetness that emerge on the finish. This is a distinctly Nebbiolo-like Pinot that requires - no, demands - at least a few years in bottle. It will be interesting to see what time brings. 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Moderately saturated medium red. Aromas of raspberry, menthol and licorice, with a faintly weedy quality. Sweet, supple and rather gentle on the palate, but with good energy and lift to its red berry flavors. A bit youthfully spiky, even sharp, today but builds nicely on the back end. Ultimately brisk and uncompromisingly dry on the aftertaste. Well worth following. (ST) 91(+?)" 92 points Vinous: "The 2013 Pinot Noir The Pivot Estate Vineyard has a gorgeous sense of inner sweetness and depth that is elusive in this vintage. Cranberry, blood orange, white pepper and cinnamon are some of the nuances that flesh out in this attractive, mid-weight Pinot. The 2013 has developed nicely over the last year. Deep, dark ruby color, explosive aromas of dark cherries and rhubarb pie aptly describe this 2005 Reserve Pinot Noir. After 15 months in French Oak, this intensely flavored wine is showing beautifully. The grapes, planted entirely to the Hanzell clonal selection, were hand harvested from the de Leuze family vineyard in Carneros. This vineyard, certified by the CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers), was intensively farmed and has been the backbone of ZD's Reserve Pinot Noir since the inaugural release in 2001. Only 950 cases produced in 2005.
