2018 Clos Erasmus "Laurel" Priorat
Top Pick!
96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The second wine here and one that is easier to drink, the 2018 Laurel was produced with fruit from the younger vines, a couple of barrels that are declassified from Clos Erasmus and the Cabernet Sauvignon, more or less 70% Garnacha and 15% each Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. It has good ripeness and still a pH of 3.3. It fermented mostly in oak vats and 2,000-liter concrete vats with indigenous yeasts and matured for 18 months in 20,000-liter oak and concrete vats, second use barriques and some clay amphorae. It's...

2017 Stephen Ross "Bee Sweet Vineyard" Edna Valley Grenache (Elsewhere $42) (Elsewhere $42)
Top Pick!
93 points Vinous: "Brilliant garnet. Fresh raspberry, cherry and baking spices on the highly fragrant nose. In a silky, energetic style, offering intense red fruit and spicecake flavors that turn deeper and pick up a smoky quality on the back half. Smooth and seamless on the impressively long, gently tannic finish, which features a sappy red berry liqueur note and resonating spiciness. Raised in one-year-old and neutral French oak barrels. (JR)" (01/2021) 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Light in the glass, this is a delicious wine, starting with aromas of ...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The young and fruit-driven 2018 Garnacha Old Vines was produced with grapes from Calatayud, and it fermented with semi-carbonic maceration and matured in concrete with lees for four months. It's juicy and ripe, with a round palate, fine tannins and a warm finish. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2019. (LG)" (04/2020) K&L Notes: Vinos del Viento is our most recent addition to our direct-import portfolio from Spain. It is a project that focuses on Garnacha and Cariñena (Grenache and Carignan) from the regio...

92 points James Halliday: "Red berried fruits, bright and lively, swoosh through the palate, engaging as they go. It's not complex but it's effective. Dry spice, florals and swirls of anise take the idea and run with it. It's not heavy but it's insistent." (09/2016)
Price: $14.99

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "From vines planted in 1910, this wine impresses on multiple levels. Aromas of dark berry, strawberry, dried thyme and turned soil are both rustic and refined. The palate is framed by fresh acidity and a delightful rocky minerality, which give depth to the cranberry, raspberry and herbal flavors. *Editors' Choice* (MK)" (11/2020) 92 points Vinous: "Deep, brilliant red. Vibrant raspberry and floral scents are complicated by suggestions of baking spices and succulent herbs. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering open-knit ...

91 points Vinous: "Vivid ruby-red. Aromas of ripe red and dark berries, spicecake and candied flowers are complemented by a smoky mineral nuance that builds in the glass. Sappy black raspberry and cherry flavors show good depth as well as energy. Silky and appealingly sweet, finishing with sharp focus and smooth tannins that fold into the wine’s juicy fruit. Raised in stainless steel and concrete tanks. (JR)" (02/2021) K&L Notes: Given the fresh, raspy mixed berry fruit, the name "Zestos" is indeed apt (though it actually is Spanish for "basket.") Typi...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Light rosewater, strawberry and cherry-juice aromas meet with rounded star anise and baking spice on the nose of this single-vineyard expression. There is great chalky tension to the palate and a ripping acidity, framing flavors of red fruit, orange rind and, on the finish, vanilla paste. (MK)" (10/2018)
Price: $29.99

94 points James Halliday: "Light, bright crimson; the inclusion of 9% grenache from McLaren Vale has worked very well, for there's a touch more structure and spine than many Barossa Valley grenaches at this price. The red fruits that are the heart and soul of this wine are delicious." (05/2017) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine offers a perfumed nose of ripe strawberry, cherry and blueberry fruit, with additional notes of herbs and black peppery. The palate brings bright fruit backed by soft, sandy tannins." (04/2019)
Price: $14.99

96 points James Suckling: "This has such attractive and pure, fresh-raspberry, red-cherry and red-plum aromas with some subtle spice and dried-wood notes. The palate has a succulent, juicy and energetic feel with mouthwateringly fresh red-berry flavors. So tautly focused and approachable yet resilient tannins." (06/2020)

2018 Seabold "Siletto Vineyard - Old Vine" San Benito County Grenache (Elsewhere $40) (Elsewhere $40)
Top Pick!
95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Baked cherries, carnation-laced potpourri, cinnamon and sumac aromas swirl into a heady nose on this bottling from a nearly forgotten corner of California’s winemaking history. Loads of red spice, lead the red-fruit palate, which is both rich and fresh, finishing on a clove kick. (MK)" (03/2021) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The pale ruby-purple colored 2018 Grenache Siletto Old Vines has a fantastic, open-knit perfume of tangerine peel, red cherry preserves, crushed raspberries and strawberries, black tea leaves...

95 points Vinous: "The 2018 Grenache Vie Caprice Vineyard captures Angela Osborne's style at its very best. A deep red, the Vie Caprice offers terrific freshness and density of fruit, but always in the lifted style that makes these wines so unique and compelling. Sweet red cherry, red plum, blood orange, rose petal and cinnamon lead into the soft, open-knit finish. This is such a gorgeous wine. (AG)" (08/2020)

94 points Vinous: "Glistening scarlet. Assertively perfumed red fruit liqueur, cherry, exotic spice and succulent herb aromas show superb definition and a subtle medicinal quality. Shows very good depth and velvety texture, offering sappy raspberry, medicinal cherry and candied lavender flavors that betray no rough edges. Lingers with outstanding tenacity on the finish, which features rounded tannins and resonating florality. Made from a blend of wines that are made from air-dried grapes from the 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 vintages. Note that this wine is...

96 points Wine Spectator: "This delivers stunningly pure fruit, with silky layers of raspberry, boysenberry and blackberry coulis that cascade over each other, backed by subtle dried anise and warm ganache notes. Very concentrated but not hefty, this sails through the finish, with a perfectly embedded graphite spine and a long echo of lavender. Best from 2018 through 2032. From" (01/2015) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac is brilliant, and checks in near the top of the vintage. Made from 100% Grenache, it ...

94 points Wine & Spirits: "This grows at Paxton’s Landcross Farm, surrounding the family’s winery in Seaview, and at their Thomas Block. The vines are farmed under biodynamics, certified since 2011. And the wine shows that care in farming through its generous red-currant fruit intensity, along with the sort of mineral austerity that will convince fans of Rhône to consider Aussie grenache. It’s packed with tension, continuing to grow more delicious as that youthful structure opens toward richness." (02/2021) 91 points James Halliday: "It's not sweet, bu...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "(Tasted with same score in 2002, the following review reflects a tasting in 02/1998) Two of the most decadent wines made on planet Earth are the limited production (about 900 cases of each) of Old Vine Grenache. In 1996, there are three offerings, but I only tasted two, the Blewitt Springs and Kangarilla Vineyard. The opaque blue/black-colored 1996 Old Vine Grenache Blewitt Springs offers a blackberry, cassis, and peppery-scented nose. Explosively sweet black fruit hits the palate with considerable weight and un...

91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A step up in price, the 2016 Breca is all Garnacha that was fermented and aged 15 months in older puncheons and demi-muids. It has brilliant notes of kirsch, ripe black raspberries, crushed violets, orange rind, licorice, and spice box. Rich, medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured, and balanced, it's another beautiful wine that has balance, integrated acidity, ripe tannins, and tons of character. " (09/2019) 90 points James Suckling: "There’s a wealth of ripe dark-berry and spicy-fruit aromas here with black tea and a herba...

The viticulture is organic, grape harvest is manual and carefully selected. Vineyards: rocky limestone clay soil of very low fertility. Altitude of the vineyards: 800m above sea level. Spontaneous fermentation, aged 6 months, 1/3 of the grapes fermented and aged respectively in clay amphorae, French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. Limited production of 1700 bottles. 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra combines the power and ripeness of the slate soils with the freshness of the year and comes through as balanced and very complete. The oak is perfectly integrated, and the year seems like a breakthrough in the region, more elegant and floral as well as tasty, with very fine tannins and supple flavors. This is superb. 3,120 bottles produced. (LG)" (04/2020) K&L Notes: This is Telmo Rodriguez’s Sierra de Gredos project, named after the Spanish car manufacturer. Take a quick m...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "2017 was a comparatively cool vintage, which has ramped up the elegance and freshness factor on Yangarra’s most premium and renowned wine. Compared with the raw beauty and pure joy of the Ovitelli Grenache (which is half the price), this is a more polished wine, set for time in the cellar but also drinking beautifully now. The floral characteristics shine along side brambly fruit and soft savory, mineral aromas. The palate is open knit, with juicy berries washing over the tongue, followed by a tug of highly textural an...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "90+ "The 2017 Pegaso Zeta is a juicy, straightforward, open and expressive pure Garnacha, and it's a little riper than the 2016, which was the vintage of the change. But it faithfully represents a warmer year of faster ripening and perhaps a little less complexity. 13,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2018." (LG)" (04/2020) K&L Notes: Zeta is from 890-920m at the entry into Cebreros. Produced with 100% traditional, EU organic, bush-trained garnacha vines. The slate and granite soils are blended, givi...

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Made from 100% Powerline Vineyard (since 2015), the 2017 Grenache The Boy Powerline Vineyard sports a lighter ruby hue as well as Rayas-like notes of decayed flowers, kirsch liqueur, licorice, and cured meats. Seamless, medium-bodied, and beautifully polished, with fine tannins, it's a stunning, Burgundian example of this variety to enjoy over the coming 15-20 years. 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The varietal Garnacha red 2018 Suzzane refers to Leonard Cohen's song of the same name and is an ode to women. It was produced with grapes from three hectares of 117-year-old vines in the zone of Cárdenas, where the soils are red and have a lot of iron. It fermented in a combination of concrete and oak vats and 500-liter barrels with 20% full clusters and indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic in concrete and foudre and 12 months' aging in 500-liter barrels and a Stockinger foudre. This wine has nothing to do w...

Winemaker's Notes: "This Grenache was sourced from Joe Hattrup’s Elephant Mountain Vineyard in the Rattlesnake Hills Appellation of Yakima Valley, Washington. At harvest, we foot-stomped a small layer of fruit at the bottom of a tank and layered the remainder of the fruit on top, 100% whole cluster. The tank was then gassed and sealed for 20 days. Once opened, the grapes (mostly still fully intact) were pressed and fermentation was completed with native yeast. This wine was aged in terracotta amphora for 12 months followed by neutral oak for 5 addition...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The eponymous red 2015 Sedella was cropped from a warm and dry year; despite this, the wine is only 13.5% alcohol and has good freshness. It matured in used French oak barrels for 14 months. For the first time, the wine reminded me of an old Colares, with some earthy and rusty aromas, character and rusticity. It really had the aromatic profile of an old red from Portugal (that I love!). There are notes of iron and licorice, and the palate had pungent flavors and fine-grained but slightly pointy tannins. I guess t...

2005 Pierre Usseglio "Mon Aïeul" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Back In Stock!
96 points Wine Spectator: "Shows the great embedded structure of the vintage, with a strong graphite undertow pushing the layers of blackberry, boysenberry and plum fruit, while additional sweet spice, mocha and bittersweet cocoa notes fill in the background. Packed with fruit and terroir, with a gorgeous mouthfeel. Best from 2008 through 2027. (JM)" (10/2007) 94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A solid showing and certainly a more restrained, structured vintage for this cuvee, the 2005 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de mon Aïeul shows a ...

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I tasted two vintages of the top Garnacha (Peluda), so next to the 2017 Les Manyes, I also had the 2018; it was great to see the differences in the wines, even if the analytical data showed pretty similar. This amazing vineyard at 800 meters in altitude on red clay and gypsum soils has more in common with some vineyards from Montsant than the majority of other vineyards from Priorat. In 2016, they started aging the wine 100% in concrete, and they have no intention of going back. This is quite austere and compact ...

Of the 2010 Sine Qua Non "Five Shooter" Central Coast Grenache,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "A similar blend (75% Grenache, 16% Syrah, 2.5% Mourvedre, 4.5% Roussanne and 2% Viognier) and also a brilliant bottle of wine, the 2010 Grenache Five Shooter spent 20 months in 75% used barrels, with the balance in concrete and new French oak. Seamless and elegant, with the house richness and texture, it gives up thrilling, floral-tinged aromas and flavors of red berry fruit, flower oil, spice, white pepper and licorice to go with a full-bodied, layered mouthfeel that keeps you coming back to the glass. While approachable now, it will have upwards of two decades of longevity. (JD)" (08/2013)

Bid on this bottle of 2006 Sine Qua Non "Raven Series" California Grenache (98RP, 97JD, 97WS, 95ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, largely from the 11 Confessions Vineyard, with a small amount from Bien Nacido, spent 21 months in barrel. It is really strutting its stuff now, and showing even better than my original note predicted in August of 2009. The wine has loads of meat, licorice, smoke, charcoal and graphite, as well as huge peppery, blackberry and black cherry notes. Full-bodied, with great acidity, nicely integrated tannin, an admirable mouthfeel and tremendous length, this killer Grenache is still young and probably 3-5 years away from prime time drinking. (RP)" (08/2011)
Starting Bid: $215.00

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2017 Cayuse "God Only Knows" Walla Walla Valley Grenache (99JD, 97JS, 95RP, 94VN, 94WE). Jeb Dunnuck: "Always in the running for one of the top Grenache outside of the South of France, the 2017 Grenache God Only Knows reveals a medium ruby/purple hue as well as a gorgeous nose of framboise, wild strawberries, sweet mulch, sappy flowers, ground pepper, and liquid violets. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, Burgundian Grenache that has a great mid-palate, an opulent, powerful yet ethereal mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a solid spine of acidity. It’s the finest vintage I’ve tasted of this cuvée, blending remarkable intensity with a sense of elegance and purity that’s something to behold. Give bottles another year or three and enjoy over the following decade." (04/2020)
Starting Bid: $270.00

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2012 Alban "Pandora" Edna Valley Grenache (100RP, 95VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A perfect wine any way you look at it, the utterly profound 2012 Pandora is 100% Grenache that was brought up all in barrel. Massively concentrated and textured, yet ethereal and nuanced, it offers a huge bouquet of black currants, licorice, smoked herbs, chocolate and toasted spice. Bravo to the team at Alban for this incredible, full-bodied, seamless beauty that's easily one of the greatest wines I've tasted from California. (JD)" (08/2016)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2012 Sine Qua Non "Rattrapante - Eleven Confessions Vineyard" Sta. Rita Hills Grenache (100RP, 97VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A perfect wine any way you look at it, the 2012 Grenache Rattrapante comes all from the Eleven Confessions Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills and spent 33 months in 27% new French oak. My notes start - and end - with “Wow.” Giving up tons of black raspberries, peppery herbs, licorice, dried flowers and cured meats, it’s a massively concentrated, rich and layered Grenache that somehow manages to stay graceful, lively and fresh on the palate. There are roughly 800 cases of this elixir and any Grenache lover should do their best to latch onto a bottle (or two). It’s also worth noting that this cuvee saw 26% whole clusters, which is a small change from past vintages. (JD)" (08/2016)
Starting Bid: $560.00

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2015 Espectacle del Montsant is a ripe and classic vintage for this exceptional wine produced from a single vineyard in Montsant. This has a forward personality—open, expressive and showy in the nose—from a typically warm and ripe year that resulted in a voluptuous and hedonistic Espectacle that's easy to like. It's rounder and lusher than the 2014 I had next to it, and the two vintages showed very different. The palate is also gentler, with integrated acidity and a soft mouthfeel. Some 6,000 bottles were fil...

Of the 2009 Sine Qua Non "This Is Not An Exit" Sta. Slightly exotic, with notions of kirsch, flower oil, smoked meats, licorice and graphite, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness and depth, loads of fruit and a blockbuster finish. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2013 Sine Qua Non "Jusqu' à l'os" Sta. Rita Hills Grenache (100RP, 98JD, 96VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Grenache Jusqu' a l'os was produced from 79% Grenache from the 11 Confessions Vineyard along with 18% Syrah and 3% Petite Sirah, produced using 89% whole cluster and aged for around 38 months in 51% used oak, 6% new French oak and 43% concrete tanks (bottled December 6, 2016). It displays a medium to deep garnet color and rock star vibrant red currant and black raspberry scents with hints of licorice, mocha, Indian spices and peppered salami plus oh-so-fragrant and seductive touches of potpourri and chargrill. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and opulently fruited in the mouth, the alluring, velvety tannins support savory, spicy layers right through the long, mineral-laced finish. Of the 2017 Faethm "Fingers Crossed - Bien Nacido Vineyard" Santa Maria Valley Grenache,Jeb Dunnuck writes: "Moving to the reds, the 2017 Grenache Fingers Crossed is close to 80% Grenache with the balance Syrah and Mourvèdre, that was 50% destemmed and brought up in just 35% new French oak. Rocking levels of cassis, black raspberries, cured meats, and ground pepper all emerge from the glass, and it’s full-bodied and ethereal, with incredible purity of fruit. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2011 Keplinger "Red Slope" Knights Valley Grenache (93VN). Vinous: "The 2011 Red Slope is juicy, forward and expressive. Sweet red cherries, mint, wild flowers and licorice meld together in a beautiful, forward Grenache with tons of juiciness. The 2011 is more accessible than the 2010 because of its mid-weight structure, but all the elements come together in the glass. White flowers, orange zest and cinnamon linger on the perfumed, fragrant finish. This is a terrific showing in a tough, tough year. The blend is 96% Grenache and 4% Syrah. (AG)" (11/2013)

Bid on this bottle of 2006 Sine Qua Non "In The Crosshairs" Sta. Rita Hills Grenache (100JD, 100RP, 97WS, 96JS, 96ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is Sine Qua Non’s extended barrel-aged Grenache (meaning that in most vintages since 2003, Krankl has produced two cuvees of Grenache, one aged 18-22 months before bottling, and the other one with extended barrel-aging, in this case 32 months in wood). A blend of 84% Grenache, 12% Syrah and 4% Viognier, all from the 11 Confessions Vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills, this is one of the most extraordinarily elegant Grenaches Krankl has produced. It is an intellectual wine, yet it doesn’t wimp out by any means. It is full-bodied and voluptuously textured, with notes of spice box, licorice and Provencal herbs, copious quantities of black currant and kirsch liqueur, stunning richness and a finish lasting close to a minute. This amazing effort confirms Krankl’s meticulous and nearly obsessively detailed work in both the vineyard and the win

95 points Vinous: "Youthful purple. Heady, mineral-accented aromas of cherry preserves, blueberry, vanilla and pungent flowers, with a suave potpourri nuance building in the glass. Juicy, concentrated and expansive in the mouth, offering intense dark fruit compote, spicecake, licorice pastille flavors and a hint of smokiness. Smooth, fine-grained tannins shape the strikingly long, floral-driven finish leaving sweet black and blue fruit notes behind. Bid on this bottle of 2015 Sine Qua Non "E - Eleven Confessions Vineyard" Sta. Rita Hills Grenache (100RP, 100VN, 98JD). Vinous: "The 2015 Grenache E, from Elaine and Manfred Krankl’s Eleven Confessions Vineyard, is stunningly beautiful. Remarkably light on its feet for such a sumptuous wine, the 2015 has so much to offer. Beautifully expressive aromatics make a strong opening impression. Dark red and purplish berry fruit, mint, sweet spice and licorice develop with air, but it is the wine’s overall feel that stands out most. At times, the E is quite powerful, while in other moments it is much more delicate. That contrast makes for an utterly captivating wine. (AG)" (09/2019)

This beauty is made from blend of 75% Grenache, 22% Syrah, 2% Roussanne and 1% Viognier, all from the Eleven Confession Vineyard, that spent just under 30 months in 22% new and 78% used French oak prior to bottling. It offers a huge nose of exotic red and black fruits, smoked duck, spice, and pepper that just screams Grenache! Deep purple colored, full-bodied, seamless, elegant, and just heavenly textured and long, with ultra-fine tannin, it opens up with time in the glass and is a monumental effort that has another 15-20 years of prime drinking ahead

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2014 Sine Qua Non "Testa dei Cherubini" Sta. Rita Hills Grenache (99JD, 98RP, 98VN). Jeb Dunnuck: "As with the extended aged Syrah release, the 2014 Grenache Testa Dei Cherubini (80% Grenache, 15.5% Syrah, and the rest Petite Sirah and Viognier) comes all from the estate Eleven Confessions Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills and spent just under 38 months in 25% new French oak, with the balance in neutral barrels (varying sizes). Layers of black raspberry, cassis, white chocolate, white flowers, and Asian spices flow to a full-bodied, supple, powerful Grenache that has silky, silky tannins, a seamless texture, no hard edges, and a finish that won’t quit. It’s already approachable, yet in my experience, this extended élevage results in a very stable wine, and I suspect this beauty will have another two decades of longevity." (10/2018)
