Trabucchi has always been among our favorite producers of Amarone, for their flavor, character, and fun. Over the entrance to the winery is inscribed, "With inspiration from Giuseppe Quintarelli, help from Romano Dal Forno and the money of Sig. Trabucchi," who is obviously someone with a great sense of humor. Valpolicella is one of the most exciting winemaking zones in Italy now. Gone are the days of the ubiquitous plonk; cheap and wet. Today's Valpolicella is stunningly aromatic, concentrated, richly textured, and spicy. The Trabucchi Amarone has less f...

2011 Poggio Scalette "Il Carbonaione" Alta Valle della Greve
Back In Stock!
94 points James Suckling: "Wonderful aromas of dried orange peel, blueberry and dark chocolate. Full body with firm tannins and a fresh, clean finish. Always a wonderful Sangiovese. Needs at least three years to soften but so beautiful now." (09/2014) 94 points Vinous: "The 2011 Carbonaione is another gorgeous wine in a line of successful vintages that goes all the way back to 1992. Blackberry jam, cloves, menthol, licorice, new leather and sweet spices flesh out in a voluptuous, racy wine that beautifully expresses the personality of the vintage. Toda...

97 points James Suckling: "A very muscular red with plum, blueberry, walnut and dried mushroom character on both the nose and palate. Full and chewy. Fabulous fruit and intensity. Amazing quality for the vintage. Wow. Better in 2017." (10/2015) 95 points Vinous: "The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino Vecchie Vigne is deep, powerful and explosive. The gravitas of the old vines and the blend of fruit that incorporates fruit from the southern end of the zone in equal parts with the north comes through loud and clear. Macerated cherries, smoke, spices, leather, ...

The estate of Giuseppe Quintarelli, the Veneto’s most important producer, has received justifiable renown for its near-mythical Amarone, Recioto and the cult wine, Alzero. As resolute traditionalists, the Quintarelli estate follows the winemaking protocol established by Giuseppe, practices he learned from his father and grandfather. Therefore, Quintarelli wines are always small in allocation, high in demand, and stratospheric in quality--even the most connected wine-lovers find the Quintarelli wines difficult to obtain. As with the estate’s Amarone, Quin...

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2011 Monte Tondo Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva. Monte Tondo is a family-run estate in Soave that is obsessively focused on artisanal quality. The Amarone Riserva is made from 70% Corvina and 30% Rondinella from the estate's best vines. It's made in the very traditional Amarone fashion of air-drying the grapes on wicker mats after harvest. The resulting wine is intense in every sense of the word. The deepest ruby color possible, it offers up a nose of ultra-ripe plum and black cherry with secondary notes of tobacco, new leather, and black tea. The palate is reflective of the nose with a rich, unctuous body and structure. It's classic Amarone that spends a full 60 months in large Slavonian oak before release.

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2011 Casa E. di Mirafiore "Paiagallo" Barolo (92JS, 92RP, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Barolo Paiagallo is a bold and exuberant wine with an immediate and accessible personality. This wine put it all out there with intensity and cheerful flair. The quality of fruit is dark, succulent and very indicative of the warm growing season. The mouthfeel is focused and tight with impressive length and precision. (ML)" (08/2018)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2011 Feudi di San Gregorio "Serpico" Irpinia (92RP, 91WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Slightly hotter in terms of alcohol, the 2011 Irpinia Aglianico Serpico is a powerful and lasting expression of Aglianico from a warm vintage. Big fruit intensity is followed by cinnamon, nutmeg, crushed clove and cured meat. Similar intensity is shown in the mouth where the wine is opulently shaped and generous in terms of extraction and persistency. It closes with ripe fruit flavors and soft tannins. (ML)" (04/2015)
