94 points Wine Spectator: "Healthy dark color, wonderful youthful vitality. Rich mocha, chocolate, black cherry and spice flavors, elegant and polished, with softening tannins and dusty, cedary oak adding dimension. Excellent balance. (JL, Web-2002)" 92 points Vinous: "Bright medium red, showing remarkably little amber at the rim. Mellow nose offers aromas of raspberry, mocha, brown spices and sandalwood. Spicy and reasonably sweet, but with a slight acid edge giving shape to its red berry, spice and cocoa flavors; neither black in its flavor profile no...
Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Impressively rich, wonderfully intense fruit and flavors that display the same characteristics followed by excellent length and a definite Nuits character plus a trace of finishing rusticity. This too is approaching the front end of drinkability and it should last for a number of years." (10/2001) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1991 Nuits St.-Georges Les Vaucrains (from 45-year old vines) possesses a big, spicy, earthy, licorice, and black-cherry-scented nose, tannic, muscular, powerful flavors, excellent depth, and an ...

Jancis Robinson: "45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot. Very small vintage (20-25% of the usual crop) due to the hard frost 21 Apr. Serious frost damage to new shoots. Slightly bricky rim but garnet core. Fresh and cedary but less fragrant than the 1996. A little sappy and nutty. Touch of undergrowth on the nose and comes through more on the palate. Dry, fine tannins, fully resolved and sweet. Some sweetness of undergrowth and red fruit. Just enough fruit to be in balance now but I wouldn't keep it much longer. Good fo...

Bid on this 2-magnum lot of 1991 Spottswoode Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L) (96RP, 93VN, 93WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "1991 marked the last vintage with Tony Soter and Mia Klein. The year was the most abundant in Spottswoode’s history, producing 5,852 cases of a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc. Interestingly, this was also one of the great early stars in the tasting, showing that high yields can (when conditions are perfect – and they were in 1991, with a long growing season with plenty of sunshine, but no real extreme heat waves). This wine still has a dense, ruby/bluish-purple color, full body, a stunning nose of black raspberry, blackcurrant, licorice and camphor. The wine has fabulous intensity, full body, sweet tannin and a long, long finish. It is easy to say this has reached full maturity, but it still has a youthfulness and vibrancy that belies that notion. (RP)" (08/2016)
