2017 Westwood "Legend" Sonoma County Red Blend (Elsewhere $50) (Elsewhere $50)
Top Pick!
92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Grenache (there's Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in there as well), the 2017 Legend Proprietary Red Wine is a delicious, plump, fruit-loaded beauty that displays chocolatey dark currants, plums, savory herbs, and spice-driven aromas and flavors. These carry to a full-bodied red with a rounded, mouthfilling texture, plenty of ripe tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. Drink this pleasure-bent, incredibly satisfying red blend over the coming 7-8 years or more." (08/2...

Such a beautiful wine and a classic rendition of this varietal (one of my personal favorites). Pristine organic fruit from Preston's stunning Dry Creek estate is meticulously crafted into this bright, fresh, wine that possesses haunting aromatics and textural elegance. Love Pinot Noir but looking for something a little different...? Check this out. (Ryan Woodhouse - K&L Domestic Wine Buyer)

A very different wine than most in the Turley line up. The Bechtold Vineyard Cinsault is crunchy, fresh, low alcohol and higher acidity. It comes from extremely old vines, believed to be the oldest Cinsault on the planet. One of my personal favorite summer wines year after year. (Ryan Woodhouse - K&L Domestic Wine Buyer) Winemaker's notes: "Planted in 1886, this Cinsault vineyard is the oldest of its kind in the country - perhaps even beyond. The vines are gnarly, head-trained and planted on their own roots. The wine is light-bodied, tart, perfumed, and...

Cruse Wine Co. has emerged as one of the most vocal proponents of North Coast Valdiguié and the "Monkey Jacket" shows the darker, meatier side of this under-the-radar grape. Winery tasting notes: "Raspberry tart, sweet summer flowers, bramble, and the slightest hint of grilled meats and cherry pie. Bright, crunchy acidity, refreshing finish with just a bit of simple tannins that cleanse. If a red wine can be thirst quenching then this is it. Composed of 51% Valdiguié, the remainder coming from Carignan, Syrah, and red field blend from the North Coast of ...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This earthy, slightly funky blend of 78% Carignan, 15% Grenache and 7% Mourvèdre opens with aromas of cranberry, turned earth and dusty herbs. The palate’s crunchy, tarry tension is loaded with blistered raspberry flavors and an underlying earthy funk. (MK) " (09/2021) K&L Notes: Birichino is not a brand-new winery, having been around for a decade now, but its popularity is gaining strength as people look toward older California vineyards for their vibrancy and concentration of fruit. Founders Alex Krause and John Locke sour...

93 points Wine & Spirits: "Walla Walla’s famous rocks show through in this blend of three-quarters syrah and one-quarter cabernet, coming through in a lively meaty scent to go with a grounding of cedar and plum. The flavors are dense, savory and vinous, finishing with a note of fennel. " (10/2012) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Broad and velvety, filled out nicely with rich blueberry, licorice and black olive flavors that push against refined tannins on the fresh, open-weave finish." (11/2012) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Sharp and herbal, this new Redivi...

Filomena is a very small project owned and operated by winemaker Luke Nio and his (soon to be wife) Kat. Luke has worked for many great producers around the globe including his current role as the Cellar Master at Bedrock Wine Co. Winemaker's Notes:"33% whole cluster indigenous yeast fermentation, aged in a 400L new oak puncheon and two stainless steel drums. The wine shows cranberry, cinnamon, bergamot, and a touch of vanilla. The palate is full of bright cherries with the oak showing its face towards the back, lingering on the finish. Low tannins and ...

Marietta "Old Vine Red - Lot #71" California Red Blend
Top Pick!
94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep ruby-purple in color, the NV Old Vine Red Lot 71 has bright black cherry on the nose, with accents of fresh tobacco leaves, woodsmoke iron and potpourri. Medium-bodied, grainy and fresh, it has spicy, mineral-laced fruit and a long, lifted finish. I love this wine for its full flavor, juicy appeal and sensitive price point. (EB)" (06/2021)
Price: $13.95

89-91 points Vinous: "The NV Red Old Vine Lot 70 OVR is generous and expressive from the very first taste. Black cherry, plum, spice and leather all flesh out in this wonderfully inviting, budget friendly Zinfandel-based red. (AG)" (04/2020) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Mint and chocolate notes merge with ripe blackberries in this fullbodied but polished wine that has good balance and mild tannins. Made from multiple vintages, it’s a timeless, value-oriented Zinfandel blend that keeps on truckin’. (JG)" (02/2021) K&L Notes: "One of California's fine...

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2018 Milk & Honey is a more Tempranillo-dominated cuvée yet includes 15% Syrah, 11% Mourvèdre, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged 18 months in 82% new French oak, its deep purple color is followed by lots of darker berry and currant fruits as well as notes of scorched earth, ground pepper, and black licorice. Rich, full-bodied, and mouthfilling, it has some classic Tempranillo tannins, a chocolatey, powerful, opulent texture, and a great finish. Give bottles a year to integrate some tannins and enjoy through 2027." (09/2020)
Price: $49.99

92 points Wine & Spirits: "Lodi’s Bechthold Vineyard may be the oldest cinsault source in California, a dry farmed site on a decomposed granite wash from the nearby Sierras. It can produce cinsault of unusual depth, and yet Birichino’s bottling consistently goes against type for such a warm place: This is just 13 percent alcohol, but punches above its weight with a peppery freshness and verve, light bodied and mildly herbal, with vibrant acids for a charcuterie board. (PJC)" (01/2021) K&L Notes: Few brands occupy as many spots on our shelves (or websit...

99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Another awesome blend by Russell, the 2018 Proprietary Red Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard is 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot, and it’s one of the more overtly sexy, opulent wines in the lineup. Offering a crazy perfume of lifted red and blue fruits, spring flowers, and incense, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a supple, seamless, mouth-filling texture, sweet tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish." (01/2021) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Sugarloaf is a relatively new, cooler site in south Napa, above a qu...

94 points Vinous: "The 2018 Bellis Noir, a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Pinot Noir, is one of the most distinctive wines in this range. It is also a true original, something that is exceedingly rare. Juicy red cherry, plum and floral notes build as this racy, sumptuous wine shows off its curves. Readers will find the 2018 absolutely irresistible. (AG)" (08/2020) 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Wet stone, lavender, black raspberry and char show on this blend of Syrah and Grenache from a property where the Rhône grapes are thriving. The palate is hearty with...

92 points Wine & Spirits: "Bill Easton blended this wine from two sources—an old-vine cabernet vineyard in Shenandoah Valley and syrah from Monarch Mine Vineyard at 2,500 feet. It’s gruff at first, with an unmovable solidity to its tannins, as if infused with dissolved Foothills granite. Aromas of anise, mint and pine bark gain clarity with air, giving the wine extension rather than just density—an impressive length of flavor that feels true to place, wild and fascinating. Leave it in the cellar for several years before bringing it out for steak." (10/20...

91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "From the team at Royal Prince, the 2019 Red Wine (55% Petit Verdot and 45% Zinfandel) has loads of red and blue fruits, flowery incense, and spice aromas and flavors. Ripe, sexy, textured, and balanced, it's a no-brainer purchase." (01/2021) K&L Notes: Winery notes: SLAM DUNK is collaboration between Royal Prince Winery and KJSelections. They blending heritage California varietals to deliver an outrageously delicious, everyday wine at a phenomenal value. SLAM DUNK is about precision winemaking, power on the palate and great pric...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Grenache-based 2018 Ditch Digger is blended with 20% Mourvedre, 20% Syrah and 5% splashes of Cinsault, Counoise and Graciano. The nose is deep and nuanced, with red and black fruits accented by notes of white pepper, exotic spice, tea leaves and blood orange. It offers impressive depth of fruit on the palate, which is medium-bodied, finely grained and juicy, and it finishes with tremendous spice. It deserves another 2-3 years in the cellar. (EB)" (02/2021) 95 points Vinous: "A highly perfumed bouquet evokes...

A fresh and fragrant take on this Spanish inspired red blend (53% Graciano, 47% Garnacha). The fruit comes from Markus Bokisch's organically certified, Tierra Alta vineyard. Lightly foot stoomped, native ferment and minimial intervention. Pure, silky and quaffable. (Ryan Woodhouse - K&L Domestic Wine Buyer)

Sean Thackrey is one of the most influential and interesting people in the Bay Area food and wine community. Since 1980, he has been producing wines that are extraordinary: not only for quality and complexity, but also because he utilizes unique winemaking techniques, often drawing from historic, sometimes ancient, winemaking practices from all over the world. Sean sources grapes from many locations throughout California, and makes all his wines by hand (touching every grape) at his small Bolinas winery. Self-taught, and fully reliant on his intuition an...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It opens with classic scents of chocolate-covered cherries, cedar, bay leaves and tobacco with a very classy frame of sweet spices. In the mouth, it's medium-bodied and plushly fruited with a fine grain and great freshness, finishing long. (EB)" (07/2020) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The producer pulls from Napa Valley, High Valley, Alexander Valley and the Russian River Valley to combine 44% Cabernet Sauvignon with 20% Merlot, 14% Malbec, 12% Petit Verdot, 8% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "In comparison to some of the brand’s other offerings, this is an affordable way to check in on the Daou experience. Savory aromas of coffee bean meet with lush purple fruits on the nose. The palate is rounded in texture, with rich flavors of dark berry, cappuccino, milk chocolate and caramel. *Editors’ Choice* (MK) " (03/2021) 93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Based on 59% Petit Verdot and 41% Petit Sirah, the 2018 Proprietary Red is a ripe, sexy wine with loads of black fruits, espresso roast, chocolate, and a kiss of violets that gi...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The superstar here is the 2012 Redivivia of the Stones. Coming all from the Rocks region of Walla Walla and a blend of 78% Syrah, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Mourvedre that saw varying degrees of whole clusters in the fermentation and aging 19 months in neutral oak. It has classic olive, lavender, pepper, dried flowers and sweet cassis notes to go with a medium-bodied, elegant and lengthy feel on the palate. The tannin is noticeable, yet nicely integrated, and there’s terrific purity of fruit. Give it a year or...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Bottled unfiltered and unfined, this Merlot-Cab Franc blend has a wonderful floral fragrance, and then hits a core of rock and very tight, compact red fruits. It's dark and slow to open, but layered with nuances of graphite, dried herb, earth, black olive and spice. Black fruits include blackberry and black cherry, filling out a semi-sweet mid-palate. The tannins are polished and firm, with hints of coffee and bitter chocolate. *Editors' Choice* (PG)" (11/2008) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Bright and juicy, with focused blackb...

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Red and black currants, blueberries, green tobacco, cedarwood, and new saddle leather notes emerge from the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon / Syrah The Creator Powerline Vineyard, a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Syrah. Almost opaque and ruby/purple-hued, it's medium to full-bodied and has a layered, elegant texture, sweet tannins, and a great finish. A wine that builds nicely with time in the glass, picking up more density and length, it has the fruit and balance to offer pleasure today yet the concentration and structure to ben...

Lagier Meredith is a longtime staff favorite here at K&L. This tiny 4.5 acre property on Mt. Veeder produces distinctive, singular wines with powerful structure and authentic mountain terroir. Winery Notes: "Although it conveys its family ties to Syrah, our Mondeuse usually has a more floral aroma than our Syrah, and that's especially true with this vintage. Rose petals big time! Deeply-colored and full-bodied, as always. No new oak - 22 months in neutral French oak barrels. Unfined and unfiltered. 78 cases made."

An old favorite of the late Joe Heitz, the Grignolino is consistently a delightful, food-friendly style, with slightly spicy wild strawberry fruit aromas and flavors and a juicy palate. It's so light in color it drinks like a rosé, but has a bit more structure so that it stands up to heartier foods. Served with a slight chill, this is an excellent choice for barbecue fare or a rustic picnic with cured meats and cheeses.

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A blend you don't often see from Washington State, the 2018 Stanley Groovy checks in as 32% Touriga Nacional, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Syrah, 13% Grenache, and the rest Tinta Cao, Souzao, and Cinsault. A dense purple hue is followed by a ripe, full-bodied, concentrated wine offering loads of blue fruits, cedary green herbs, sandalwood, and orange blossom-like aromas and flavors. As with all of the wines from this estate, the texture is incredible, it's perfectly balanced, and it has ripe, polished tannins as well as a great, gr...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Zinfandel Blend 8 Years in the Desert delivers notions of stewed plums, baked raspberries and fruitcake with hints of powdered cinnamon, clove oil, tree bark, hoisin and dusty soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of ripe, spicy black and red fruits, supported by chewy tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and earthy. (LPB)" (02/2021)

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Coming from an interesting blend of Nebbiolo, Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio [Carignan], Zinfandel, Primitivo, and Barbera that’s all from the estate Centennial Mountain Vineyard, the 2017 Rosso has a more reserved yet layered bouquet of ripe blackberry and raspberry fruits interwoven with notes of brambly herbs, spice, chocolate, and loamy earth.
