93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Quite ligh t in the glass, this blend of 50% Carignan, 48% Grenache and 2% Mourvèdre starts with earthy aromas of soil, gamy charcuterie and freshly crushed scents of cran-raspberry and strawberry. There’s a rugged, meaty tone to the sip, which is offset by bright and snappy pomegranate flashes, leading into pepper and herbs toward the finish. (MK) " (01/2021) 91 points Vinous: "Deep, brilliant garnet. Vibrant, spice-accented red and dark berry aromas are complemented by a building floral nuance. Seamless and fleshy on the...

2017 Westwood "Legend" Sonoma County Red Blend (Elsewhere $50) (Elsewhere $50)
Top Pick!
92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Grenache (there's Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in there as well), the 2017 Legend Proprietary Red Wine is a delicious, plump, fruit-loaded beauty that displays chocolatey dark currants, plums, savory herbs, and spice-driven aromas and flavors. These carry to a full-bodied red with a rounded, mouthfilling texture, plenty of ripe tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. Drink this pleasure-bent, incredibly satisfying red blend over the coming 7-8 years or more." (08/2...

Such a beautiful wine and a classic rendition of this varietal (one of my personal favorites). Pristine organic fruit from Preston's stunning Dry Creek estate is meticulously crafted into this bright, fresh, wine that possesses haunting aromatics and textural elegance. Love Pinot Noir but looking for something a little different...? Check this out. (Ryan Woodhouse - K&L Domestic Wine Buyer)

James Suckling: "Lots of ripe red-cherry and berry character, but also bright acidity that helps keep this rather sleek, in spite of the generous body. Slightly drying and tart finish. A blend based on 60 per cent Merlot." (02/2019) K&L Notes: Lateral is formally part of Kathryn Kennedy Winery. Kathryn Kennedy (July 28, 1927 – August 23, 2009) was a California wine grower, establishing her vineyard during the growth phase in the California wine history known as "The Wine Boom of the early 1970s". While not the first woman winemaker, Kennedy was one of ...

A very different wine than most in the Turley line up. The Bechtold Vineyard Cinsault is crunchy, fresh, low alcohol and higher acidity. It comes from extremely old vines, believed to be the oldest Cinsault on the planet. One of my personal favorite summer wines year after year. (Ryan Woodhouse - K&L Domestic Wine Buyer) Winemaker's notes: "Planted in 1886, this Cinsault vineyard is the oldest of its kind in the country - perhaps even beyond. The vines are gnarly, head-trained and planted on their own roots. The wine is light-bodied, tart, perfumed, and...

2016 Bedrock "Oakville Farmhouse" Oakville Red Blend
Back In Stock!
95 points Vinous: "Once again, the 2016 Oakville Farmhouse Heritage Wine is one of the most compelling and singular wines in this range. The field blend of Negrette, Petite Sirah, Mondeuse, Zinfandel, Carignane, Chenin Blanc and other grapes harkens back to a time when Napa Valley was much less Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated than it is today. Lifted, aromatic and sensual, the 2016 is all class. This is the first vintage in which a small amount of white grapes were co-fermented. Stylistically, the 2016 is the most gracious and perfumed version of this wine ...

Cruse Wine Co. has emerged as one of the most vocal proponents of North Coast Valdiguié and the "Monkey Jacket" shows the darker, meatier side of this under-the-radar grape. Winery tasting notes: "Raspberry tart, sweet summer flowers, bramble, and the slightest hint of grilled meats and cherry pie. Bright, crunchy acidity, refreshing finish with just a bit of simple tannins that cleanse. If a red wine can be thirst quenching then this is it. Composed of 51% Valdiguié, the remainder coming from Carignan, Syrah, and red field blend from the North Coast of ...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This earthy, slightly funky blend of 78% Carignan, 15% Grenache and 7% Mourvèdre opens with aromas of cranberry, turned earth and dusty herbs. The palate’s crunchy, tarry tension is loaded with blistered raspberry flavors and an underlying earthy funk. (MK) " (09/2021) K&L Notes: Birichino is not a brand-new winery, having been around for a decade now, but its popularity is gaining strength as people look toward older California vineyards for their vibrancy and concentration of fruit. Founders Alex Krause and John Locke sour...

Filomena is a very small project owned and operated by winemaker Luke Nio and his (soon to be wife) Kat. Luke has worked for many great producers around the globe including his current role as the Cellar Master at Bedrock Wine Co. Winemaker's Notes:"33% whole cluster indigenous yeast fermentation, aged in a 400L new oak puncheon and two stainless steel drums. The wine shows cranberry, cinnamon, bergamot, and a touch of vanilla. The palate is full of bright cherries with the oak showing its face towards the back, lingering on the finish. Low tannins and ...

Marietta "Old Vine Red - Lot #71" California Red Blend
Top Pick!
94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Deep ruby-purple in color, the NV Old Vine Red Lot 71 has bright black cherry on the nose, with accents of fresh tobacco leaves, woodsmoke iron and potpourri. Medium-bodied, grainy and fresh, it has spicy, mineral-laced fruit and a long, lifted finish. I love this wine for its full flavor, juicy appeal and sensitive price point. (EB)" (06/2021)
Price: $13.95

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2018 Milk & Honey is a more Tempranillo-dominated cuvée yet includes 15% Syrah, 11% Mourvèdre, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged 18 months in 82% new French oak, its deep purple color is followed by lots of darker berry and currant fruits as well as notes of scorched earth, ground pepper, and black licorice. Rich, full-bodied, and mouthfilling, it has some classic Tempranillo tannins, a chocolatey, powerful, opulent texture, and a great finish. Give bottles a year to integrate some tannins and enjoy through 2027." (09/2020)

92 points Wine & Spirits: "Lodi’s Bechthold Vineyard may be the oldest cinsault source in California, a dry farmed site on a decomposed granite wash from the nearby Sierras. It can produce cinsault of unusual depth, and yet Birichino’s bottling consistently goes against type for such a warm place: This is just 13 percent alcohol, but punches above its weight with a peppery freshness and verve, light bodied and mildly herbal, with vibrant acids for a charcuterie board. (PJC)" (01/2021) K&L Notes: Few brands occupy as many spots on our shelves (or websit...

Price: $28.95

94 points Vinous: "The 2018 Bellis Noir, a blend of Syrah, Grenache and Pinot Noir, is one of the most distinctive wines in this range. It is also a true original, something that is exceedingly rare. Juicy red cherry, plum and floral notes build as this racy, sumptuous wine shows off its curves. Readers will find the 2018 absolutely irresistible. (AG)" (08/2020) 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Wet stone, lavender, black raspberry and char show on this blend of Syrah and Grenache from a property where the Rhône grapes are thriving. The palate is hearty with...

94 points Wine Spectator: "Bold aromas of rose petal and orange blossom open to dynamic blackberry, licorice and smoked pepper flavors, building tension toward medium-grained tannins. *Highly Recommended* (TF)" (04/2021) 92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Coming from a site that was originally planted in the 1850s (the vines for this release date back to the 1890s), the 2019 Red Wine Bedrock Vineyard Heritage offers a medium ruby/plum color as well as a beautifully complex nose of cherries, red plums, lavender, herbes de Provence, and pepper. Sean Thackrey is one of the most influential and interesting people in the Bay Area food and wine community. Since 1980, he has been producing wines that are extraordinary: not only for quality and complexity, but also because he utilizes unique winemaking techniques, often drawing from historic, sometimes ancient, winemaking practices from all over the world. Sean sources grapes from many locations throughout California, and makes all his wines by hand (touching every grape) at his small Bolinas winery. Self-taught, and fully reliant on his intuition an...

92 points Wine & Spirits: "Bill Easton blended this wine from two sources—an old-vine cabernet vineyard in Shenandoah Valley and syrah from Monarch Mine Vineyard at 2,500 feet. It’s gruff at first, with an unmovable solidity to its tannins, as if infused with dissolved Foothills granite. Aromas of anise, mint and pine bark gain clarity with air, giving the wine extension rather than just density—an impressive length of flavor that feels true to place, wild and fascinating. Leave it in the cellar for several years before bringing it out for steak." (10/20...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Syrah Broken Stones is a beauty. Made from 79% Syrah, 7% Petite Sirah and the rest Grenache, Mourvedre and Roussanne, it offers up full-bodied, decadent, yet incredibly pure notes of creme de cassis, smoked earth, pepper and violets. (JD)" (08/2015) 95 points Vinous: "Spectacular perfume of fresh blueberry, boysenberry, incense, vanilla and smoky minerals, with suave allspice and star anise nuances coming up as the wine stretches out. Sweet, incisive and pure on the palate, offering an array of dark fr...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Grenache-based 2018 Ditch Digger is blended with 20% Mourvedre, 20% Syrah and 5% splashes of Cinsault, Counoise and Graciano. The nose is deep and nuanced, with red and black fruits accented by notes of white pepper, exotic spice, tea leaves and blood orange. It offers impressive depth of fruit on the palate, which is medium-bodied, finely grained and juicy, and it finishes with tremendous spice. It deserves another 2-3 years in the cellar. Ripe, sexy, textured, and balanced, it's a no-brainer purchase." (01/2021) K&L Notes: Winery notes: SLAM DUNK is collaboration between Royal Prince Winery and KJSelections. They blending heritage California varietals to deliver an outrageously delicious, everyday wine at a phenomenal value. SLAM DUNK is about precision winemaking, power on the palate and great pric...

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Moving to the two Syrahs I was able to taste, the 2018 James Berry Vineyard reveals an opaque ruby/purple color as well as a thrilling bouquet of spiced red and black fruits, cured meats, sandalwood, pepper, and new leather. Full-bodied on the palate, it starts out tight and reserved but blossoms with time in the glass, offering a rounded, expansive texture, ripe yet present tannins, and a gorgeous finish. This nuanced, elegant, seamless beauty will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for a solid decade. The blend is 55%...

A fresh and fragrant take on this Spanish inspired red blend (53% Graciano, 47% Garnacha). The fruit comes from Markus Bokisch's organically certified, Tierra Alta vineyard. 93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The value play from this estate is the 2016 MCA Cuvée, which is made from a kitchen sink blend of 30% Zinfandel, 25% Petite Sirah, and 15% each of Syrah, Tannat, and Cinsault. Its vivid ruby/purple color is followed by a ripe, lush, sexy wine that has loads of black and blue fruits, plenty of spice and flower incense aromas, medium to full body, terrific purity, and a great finish. It’s a smoking good wine to enjoy over the coming 5-6 years, if not longer. I continue to love the wines from the up and coming Mark Adams, who pulls...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It opens with classic scents of chocolate-covered cherries, cedar, bay leaves and tobacco with a very classy frame of sweet spices. In the mouth, it's medium-bodied and plushly fruited with a fine grain and great freshness, finishing long. (EB)" (07/2020) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The producer pulls from Napa Valley, High Valley, Alexander Valley and the Russian River Valley to combine 44% Cabernet Sauvignon with 20% Merlot, 14% Malbec, 12% Petit Verdot, 8% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "In comparison to some of the brand’s other offerings, this is an affordable way to check in on the Daou experience. Savory aromas of coffee bean meet with lush purple fruits on the nose. The palate is rounded in texture, with rich flavors of dark berry, cappuccino, milk chocolate and caramel. *Editors’ Choice* (MK) " (03/2021) 93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Based on 59% Petit Verdot and 41% Petit Sirah, the 2018 Proprietary Red is a ripe, sexy wine with loads of black fruits, espresso roast, chocolate, and a kiss of violets that gi...

An old favorite of the late Joe Heitz, the Grignolino is consistently a delightful, food-friendly style, with slightly spicy wild strawberry fruit aromas and flavors and a juicy palate. It's so light in color it drinks like a rosé, but has a bit more structure so that it stands up to heartier foods. Served with a slight chill, this is an excellent choice for barbecue fare or a rustic picnic with cured meats and cheeses.

Lagier Meredith is a longtime staff favorite here at K&L. This tiny 4.5 acre property on Mt. Veeder produces distinctive, singular wines with powerful structure and authentic mountain terroir. Winery Notes: "Although it conveys its family ties to Syrah, our Mondeuse usually has a more floral aroma than our Syrah, and that's especially true with this vintage. Rose petals big time! Deeply-colored and full-bodied, as always. No new oak - 22 months in neutral French oak barrels. Unfined and unfiltered. 78 cases made."

Ty Caton created this wine out of a desire "to make a wine of distinction that no one else could duplicate." The blend here is Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Merlot and will surely benefit from a few years in the cellar before popping the cork.

91 points Vinous: "The 2018 Oakville Farmhouse Heritage Wine is quite delicate and refined in this vintage. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, dried flowers, mint and sweet red cherry are all nicely lifted. This field blend site will shock readers visiting Napa Valley, but the truth is that most sites in Napa once looked like this. (AG)" (04/2020)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A new blend, the 2013 Milk & Honey checks in as 35% Tempranillo, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Syrah, 6% Mourvedre and a splash of Grenache, all of which saw 16 months in 70% new French oak. It's another sensational blockbuster from Russell that offers lots of black raspberry and cassis fruit to go with notes of vanilla, cedar, Asian spice and dry-aged beef. Full-bodied, rich, structured and downright tannic, I like its mid-palate and concentration level, but it needs a year in the bottle to let the tannin mellow. ...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Hearty aromas of kirsch, cassis, snickerdoodle and root beer show on the nose of this blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Petit Verdot and 15% Syrah by Russell From. It’s lavish on the palate with rich blueberry, charred coffee bean, caramellaced fudge and burned beef flavors, all sheathed in tight tannins. (MK)" (04/2019) 93 points Vinous: " Opaque purple. 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Luscious and undulating in waves of aromas, the nose on the hearty blend of 34% Tempranillo, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Syrah, 14% Petit Verdot and 6% Grenache offers black cherry, toffee, espresso foam and caramelized beef. The palate is also lush, showing milk chocolate, coffee-cream, roast-beef and root-beer-candy flavors. 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Milk & Honey checks in as an interesting blend of 30% Tempranillo, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Syrah and the rest Grenache, Mourvedre and Petit Verdot. It offers lots of sweet black currant fruit, cedar, toasted bread, leather and dried herbs in a savory, forward and nicely textured style. There's a firm edge to the tannin (no doubt from the Tempranillo), so give it a year, and drink bottles over the following 5-6. One of my favorite estates in the Central Coast is Russell From's Herman Story, who makes...

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Another new blend based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Petite Verdot, the 2014 Bolt Cutter spent 22 months in 72% new French oak. I’m made in decent quantities and offers a saturated purple color to go with beautiful notes of crème de cassis, melted licorice, graphite and assorted herbs. It's a big, rich, heady beauty that doesn't pull any punches in its exuberant fruit and texture. Drink it over the coming 4-5 wines.
