Sophie Guiraudon is the owner of Clos de l’Anhel, a sheepfold surrounded by ten hectares of vines in Languedoc’s ancient Corbières appellation (Anhel means “lamb” in the local Occitan dialect). She farms her 25 acres alone but finds community in Les Vinifilles (“Wine Girls”), a trade organization of women who support one another and celebrate the “culture of wine.” Most of her work is done by hand, from trimming and pruning to hoeing the soil. “Les Dimanches” incorporates fruit from Sophie’s best and oldest parcels, meant for special Sunday dinners with ...

2017 Château Maris "La Touge" Minervois-La Livinière (Elsewhere $22) (Elsewhere $22)
Top Pick!
92 points Decanter: "A 70% Syrah-Grenache blend that offers a lot of wine for the price. Peppery bramble fruits, wild herbs and liquorice adorn the supple palate which has grippy fruit tannins and a lifted violet perfume. Vibrant, with balanced alcohol. (TG)" (06/2020) 92 points Wine & Spirits: "Mainly Syrah, with some Grenache and Carignan, this is earthy, meaty and layered. The tannins have a felt-like texture, lending richness and depth, letting the wine feel inviting even while the structure is firm and well packed. It’s a lot of wine for $20, espe...

Marie and Frederic Chauffray began their career in wine when they took over Fred's parents' wine shop in a suburb outside of Paris. They ran the business successfully for many years, but Marie always wanted to pursue winemaking. After eight years of searching, they found the perfect terroir in a small vineyard in the hills above the city of Montpellier. Since 2005, they have made wine their way by following organic and biodynamic principles and always with the utmost respect for nature. The Bilbo represents their everyday wine. It is composed of 60% Gren...

2018 Domaine de la Réserve d'O "La Réserve d'O" Terrasses du Larzac (Previously $25) (Previously $25)
Top Pick!
Jancis Robinson: "I am getting glimpses of beautiful fruit, and intriguing notes of baking bread, but it's not giving much away. Stunning raspberry and blackcurrant fruit that has a shimmering intensity. Seems to glow from the inside, like a ruby lit up inside coal. The texture on this wine is beautiful, like a hand-turned clay vessel that has come off the wheel and gone through the first firing, before it has been glazed, silky but rough. So much life in this wine! But needs decanting and another year of cellaring. 17.5/20 points (TC)" (06/2020) K&L N...

The Hissez O is the penultimate of production for the domaine. Sourced from the highest-altitude, lowest-yielding parcel, the wine is composed of 60% Syrah, 35% Grenache, and 5% Cinsault. The Hissez O is also aged in large, older demi-muid barrels, adding richness and texture to the wine. As with all things Reserve d'O, the farming is certified both Ecocert Organic and Demeter Biodynamic. (Keith Mabry, K&L French Regional Buyer) *Biodynamic, Natural Wine*

"My name is Sophie Guiraudon and I am a winemaker since ZERO generation!", says Sophie proudly. Sophie was working in other peoples' wineries in southern France for years. In 2000, she started her own biodynamic, organic winery. She wanted to grow grapes that her son could eat right off of the vines. The "Lolo de l'Anhel" is typically a blend of 81% Carignan, 10% Syrah, 7% Grenache Noir, and 2% Mourvèdre. The grapes are hand picked, gently vacuum pressed, and finished with 100% tank aging. *organic*

We met Marie Chauffray at the Vinifilles tasting in January of 2015 in Montpellier. The Vinifilles (which means "wine girls") is an association of women producers who own and operate their own estates. From growing to winemaking to marketing, they are involved in every aspect of their wineries' successes. I was invited by our friend Francoise Antech-Gazeau (our sparkling wine producer from the Limoux) to visit and taste her wines and meet some of her other grower-producer friends. Chauffray's was one of the most impressive wines we tasted at the event, a...

92-94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The classic 2016 Minervois La Livinière Dynamic from this leading Minervois estate looks to be a sensational barrel sample. Awesome notes of blackberries, black raspberries, Asian spices, and hints of graphite all give way to a medium to full-bodied, ultra-fine, seamless minerality that has tons of class and character. The wines from this estate always show well in their youth, yet they also age gracefully." (07/2018) 94 points Wine & Spirits: "Since winemaker Robert Eden bought Château Maris in 1996, he’s been progressively ...

94-96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Slightly deeper colored, the 2016 Minervois La Livinière Amandiers might just be the finest vintage of this cuvée to date. Sensational notes of blackberries, scorched earth, wood smoke, and peppery garrigue all emerge from this full-bodied, deep, concentrated Syrah that has remarkable purity and elegance. It's going to drink nicely right out of the gate yet evolve gracefully for 10-15 years. It should match or exceed the 2007, which is drinking brilliantly today." (07/2018) 93 points Wine & Spirits: "From a 2.5-acre patch of ...
