94 points Wine Enthusiast: "From 'the oldest House in Armagnac' comes a well-balanced sipper that's reminiscent of Bourbon with its deep amber color; its rich, sweet caramel note; and bold finish that tastes of maple-butter sprinkled with clove and cinnamon. (KN)" (12/2012) 93 points Vinous: "Dartigalongue’s XO is burly, with cologne-like aromas, and surprisingly complex for its youth (10-year-old brandies in the blend). Buttery, with flavors of dried plum, candied ginger and walnut, and a spicy finish of clove and cardamom. A Rye drinker’s Armagnac. B...

Michel Couvreur established his business selling Burgundy wines in the early 1950s in Scotland. In 1978, French friends suggested that he add a top-quality Scotch to his portfolio, which began Couvreur’s interest in the whisky industry. He believes that the oak whisky is aged in has an outsized influence on the character of the finished product. He also strongly prefers sherry casks for the maturation process, and has gone to great lengths to source what he believes are the finest casks from Andalusia. The Blossoming Auld Sherry is a recreation of the le...

91 points Vinous: "Solid, good-value 10-year-old from Grande Champagne. Golden in color, offering bright, warm notes of apricot, plum and orange peel, with toasted oak, baking spice and bit of toffee coming on the palate. But the overall effect is light and lean. (JW) " (09/2019) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This Cognac offers a golden hue and mild honey and white flower aromas. The subtle palate opens with a mild smoky note, then gives over to honey, sandalwood, and a nutmeg and ginger exhale. Made with eau-de-vie a minimum of 10 years old. *Best Buy!*...

93 points Vinous: "At 20 years old, scoured from barrels throughout Bas-Armagnac, this is the finest of Darroze’s blends. Nutty, with prune, dried apricot and spice, with freshness throughout. Bas-Armagnac, 40% abv. (JW)" (07/2018) K&L Notes: Absolutely stunning Armagnac with incredible richness, spice, and balance. Big wood, lots of spice and vanilla, and a rustic fruit character with seamless execution.

Overall this is juicy, mouthwatering and easy-drinking, mixing fruity and earthy notes and finishing with an inviting floral lilt. Sip or mix. (KN)" (04/2019) K&L Notes: This famous aperitif wine has made a resurgence in recent years as the cocktail revolution has inspired a new generation of mixologists to explore tried, true, and traditional potations. 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Although the various whiskies in this blend were distilled in Scotland, it was then moved to France's Burgundy region to age—so it's not technically Scotch. The whiskies in the blend are over 12 years old and aged in ex-Sherry casks. The end result is a nut-brown hue and rich dried date and caramel scent. The big, rounded palate surprises with smoke, underpinned with hints of Sherry, dried fig, and caramel, with a long baking spice finish. (KN)" (12/2019) K&L Notes: Belgian Michel Couvreur was an independent bottler of singl...

96-100 points Wine Enthusiast: "The seductive bouquet offers wonderfully floral, fruity, guava- and melon-like fragrances of elderflower, becoming richly pear- and quince-like following aeration time. The palate entry is soft and firm; the midpalate is integrated, harmonious and exquisitely balanced between alcohol level, sweetness, acidity and floral impact. A perfect liqueur. *Best Buy* (PP)" (04/2008) K&L Notes: Double Gold Medal at the 2007 and 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition! St. Germain is an artisanal French liqueur made from hand-p...

From the historic Louis Roque distillery located in the sleepy town of Souillac. Imported by the inimitable Charles Neal, Roque specializes in Vieille Prune from Gascony. Perhaps the finest in its class, certainly the best of what's available in the states, the spirit is distilled using only the best Gascogne Plums. With the depth of a cognac and the finesse of a plum brandy, this Vieille Prune has an unparalleled richness. Bursting with Asian spice and ripe fruit, you'll want to keep this one in stock once you've tried it.

92 points Wine Enthusiast: " This velvety Cognac opens with plenty of oak on the nose and palate. The more you sip, the more the oak recedes and bold vanilla and citrus come forward, fading to a lip-smacking finish of nutmeg and ginger. Sip or mix. Aged a minimum of 2 years. *Best Buy* (KN)" (12/2017) K&L Notes: Bach Gabrielsen Tre Kors is a lovely blend of Grande and Petite Champagne (25%) and Fins Bois (75%) grapes. Aged in Limousin oak for a minimum of 2 years, this Cognac takes on a remarkable amber hue despite the minimal usage of caramel and bois...

This is the fabulous Kina l'Avion d'Or. Watch out Lillet and Cocchi Americano, this is a traditional Kina Aperitif recipe coming from a hundred year old recipe from a distillery in Switzerland. Richer than expected, it doesn't have the light heartedness of the Americano, but it certainly makes up for it in term of depth. The nose is deeply perfumed and wild! The palate has the perfect interplay between bitter and sweet. This is sure to be a classic.

95 points Vinous: "Pinning down the term hors d’age is a moving target, but this bottling by Michel Huard stands at the older end, with a minimum of 10-year-old spirits, along with a significant percentage that is more than 25 years old. Golden-colored, it opens with a gorgeous, old-time nose - rustic in the best sense of the word. There’s woodiness here, from the nose to the finish, but it’s an attractive virtue, with deep and well-integrated. There’s balanced aromas and flavors of tarte tatin, with notes of pepper and even salted licorice. In the mouth...

One of the absolute most unusual and exceptional examples of one of our favorite categories of apéritifs, Pineau des Charentes. I think these really work after dinner as well. Like the incredible Paul et Marie Pineau before them, the Navarre’s Pineau des Charentes take this whole category to the next level. They’re produced in a hyper-inefficient manner, which makes them absolutely wonderful. The Jacky Navarre Pineau Rosé is made with 6 year old Cognac and the grape must from the 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc harvest. Aged until Gnarly, meat...

94 points Vinous: "A blend of brandies aged five to ten years, Domaine Boingnères Reserve Speciale is made from Folle Blanche, Ugni Blanc, and Colombard, and bottled at cask strength. A great example of how Armagnac doesn’t always mean dried fruit and sweet oak. Pure minerality and racy acidity take the lead here, with fresh fruit on the wonderfully long finish. (JW)" (07/2018) K&L Notes: When discussing the components of a great brandy, the soil is just as important an indicator of quality as it is to a great wine. Boingnères grows all their fruit in...

96-100 points Wine Enthusiast: "The perfect crème de cassis bouquet features concentrated black currant skin aromas and extreme tannic acid. Palate entry is super tannic and astringent and focused on the black currant juice and skins; the midpalate is perfectly balanced between the ripe fruit, acid, tannin and sweet tartness. Concludes thick, incredibly tart and astringent, and utterly luscious. A crème de cassis beauty. 95 points Vinous: "Age makes all the difference in Grande Champagne, and at 20 years old, this Cognac has begun to show its elegance and depth. Pronounced aromas of dried rose, peach jam, marmalade, toasted nuts and the beginning of rancio glide softly on to a palate of baked, spiced pear, warm pastry, and a savory note on the finish. My favorite of the Dudognon collection. (JW)" (09/2019) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Look for a burnished gold hue and mild floral aromas. The palate is relatively dry, alternating cigar wrapper and espresso with chamomile...

Single distillation occurs on a traveling, wood-fired column still. The spirit in the "Selection" is aged 3-5 years. 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "New to the U.S. market in 2012, this 'dry' Curaçao is intriguing and should work well as a sophisticated sweetener alongside bitter-edged spirits and darker, biting spirits like rye whiskey. While not precisely dry, this golden liqueur has its vanilla sweetness tempered by a wash of bitter orange. The scent is rich and agave-like, with a touch of mezcal-like funkiness. (KN)" (02/2012) K&L Notes: Designed by renowned cocktailian David Wondrich, this is perhaps the finest orange liqueur available for mixing. Try it in a Sideca...

The elusive Génépy (Génépi) from Dolin is a type of liqueur that has long been sought-after, but only recently become available in the US. Its character is derived from the various alpine shrubs of the genus Artemisia. More commonly known as wormwood, Genepi is an iconic alpine botanical associated with the kingdom of Savoy and the regions in France, Switzerland, and Italy that once made up that kingdom. It's been used for centuries to flavor liqueurs, digestifs, and various tonics. The flavor profile falls somewhere in between modern absinthe and chartr...

There’s complexity here, a balance of savory, fruity, and minerality, as well as long attractive finish. 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Grand Marnier—or 'GrandMa,' as some cocktail geeks gleefully shorthand it—remains one of the classics. Although it’s Cognac-based, it’s a versatile match for other spirits, too. The liqueur is extremely aromatic, with lots of sweet and bitter orange notes exploding out of the glass. Look for a warm, honeyed flavor and a nice burst of orange peel and spicy cinnamon and ginger on the long finish. (KN)" (02/2012) K&L Notes: The original. 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "To make this bottling, T.A. Breaux analyzed vintage absinthe, dated circa 1901. It's burnished gold in the glass, louching to opalescent light gold, and scented with bold notes of anise and licorice. The flavor is mild at first, but shows more anise on the long, rounded finish. (KN) " (03/2015) K&L Notes: Jade 1901 Absinthe Supérieure was recreated as a tribute to a widely studied pre-ban absinthe, as it appeared circa 1901. During the heyday of its existence, the original brand was exported worldwide export, and was widely ...

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The first aromatic blast is seductively anise-like, then it mellows, turning softer, more herbal, and plumper. At palate entry the intensely bitter taste of anise both enlivens and cleanses the palate; at midpalate the pleasant sting of alcohol and the zest of rooty/woodsy botanicals make for memorable imbibing. Finishes elegant and smooth." (10/2005) K&L Notes: While the prohibition of absinthe in 1915 put a damper on wormwood spirits, it created a market for anise-flavored liqueurs like Ricard. With its characteristic l...

Lemorton Calvados comes from the southern appellation of Domfrontais. In this appellation at least 30% of the cider in the Calvados must be made from pears. This 6-year-old is elegant and beautiful, with more than 60% of the blend coming from pear. The apple, however, is what shines through and the Lemorton succeeds, more than any other Calvados we offer, in showcasing the bright acidity of the fruit along with soft touches of baking spice. Fantastic Calvados.

Finally available in the United States! The US bottling is labeled as Vegetal de la Grande Chartreuse, not Elixir Vegetal as it is in Europe, but the product is exactly the same. In 1605, the duc d’Éstrées entrusted the Carthusians with a manuscript containing a mysterious recipe composed of 130 plants which could be used to produce an “elixir of long life.” For over one and a half centuries, the Carthusians worked to perfect this recipe, which resulted, thanks to Brother Jérôme Maubec, in a final product established in 1764 called the “Élixir Végétal de...

Domaine du Cardinat has been in the Lalanne family for over a century. Farmer and grandfather of the current proprietor, Patricia Singh, built the family home at the domaine 100 years ago and cultivated the land long before that. In 1935, Joseph Lalanne's sudden death thrust Patricia's father, Camille into the fields forcing him to leave school and commit his life to the family domaine. Just four years later, Camille planted the first vines at the domaine and his life was devoted to this patient passion. There he worked tirelessly to produce great brandy...

This is a high quality orange liqueur that was recommended to us by one of San Francisco's finest mixologists. A selection of sweet oranges from Brazil and Florida (Pera) and bitter oranges from The Ivory Coast and Sicily (Bigarade) results in a medley of notes, smooth and sour altogether. The different flavors call to mind the Curaçao Island and the West Indies. The maceration of orange zest in pure alcohol in a copper pot still during several hours is followed by a distillation. The resulting orange spirit is blended with crystallized sugar, water to ...

94 points Vinous: "Slightly older than Dartigalongue’s XO, this deep amber Armagnac offers more savory notes, with a nose of grilled apple, toffee, and smoke and flavors of black tea and buttered toast on the palate, with a tobacco finish. Bas-Armagnac, 40% abv. (JW)" (07/2018) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Vanilla sweetness blends with ginger, cayenne, cinnamon and cardamom, perked up by a dried apricot midpalate. The long finish similarly leads from spiced to sweet, finishing with a crème caramel exhale. (KN)"

This adaptation of a 16th century recipe is a re-creation from the early modern age, but seems unusually contemporary. A blend of fresh grape juice and young Bas Armagnac, this light aperitif is versatile and has mass appeal. A blend of 50% Colombard and 50% Ugni Blanc, production consists of 100% free-run juice which is settled and decanted. Next, once a year, the fresh grape juice and young Armagnacs are blended in a closed vat. This is the Floc and is left to settle until the end of winter. Color: Straw-colored, gold-tinted. The Monnet house, founded in 1838, and long been known as a "sunny" Cognac. Warm and strongly floral and fruity, they are very pretty brandies. Famously called 'Sunshine in a glass' by Leonardo Cappiello, the 1920s lithographer, it has stuck ever since. Their modern expression going by the name 'Sunshine' is an ode to that house style at a very affordable price. Elegant and round, this expression is bright gold in color and loaded with quince jam, spring flowers, ripe summer stone fruits, and a wisp of vanilla and gingerbread. The finish is long and smoo...

This is beautiful, soft, and elegant brandy that shows brooding notes of cocoa, roasted nuts, and baking spices. The dried fruit really comes through on the mid-palate and the finish is a burst of cinnamon with a silky smooth exit. To get a 25-year Armagnac for this price is already a great deal, but to have it taste this good is practically criminal. The Delord family has been making this spirit since the late 1800s.

Pernod's distinctive flavor comes from the distillation of star anise with a number of aromatic herbs and plants. The original Pernod was an absinthe, though because of the controversy that surrounded the drink of Picasso, Baudelaire and Van Gogh, the ingredient responsible for the drink's hallucinatory effect was banned. Now absinthe free, this legendary product has become one of the best-known digestifs available today.
