2016 Eric Kent "Luke's Grove" Russian River Valley Chardonnay (Previously $42) (Previously $42)
Top Pick!
Like art in a bottle. Kent Humphrey created the Eric Kent winery as a celebration of art and craft. He sources fruit from some of Sonoma County's best vineyards and he partners with local Sonoma artists to feature their work in a sort of wine label gallery. Each wine Kent creates features a new and distinct piece of art. For Kent’s part, after pursuing a career in academia and advertising, he found a home in the wine cellar, and began working with vineyards he loves throughout Sonoma County. The Luke's Grove Chardonnay is primarily sourced from the Stili...

Wine Enthusiast: "Ripe aromas of pear flesh and yellow-apple slices meet with a hint of butter and lots of chalk on the nose of this blend of 67% Grenache Blanc and 33% Roussanne. The palate offers grapefruit-skin, nectarine and pear flesh flavors, proving very easy to quaff if not overly complex. (MK)" (08/2018)

In 1973, Daniel Dugois bought 2 hectares of vineyard and a house equipped with wine cellars in a village called Les Arsures, where he was born. He cultivated the vineyard and sold his production primarily to Henri Maire, one of the most prominent producers in Jura at that time. In 1982, Daniel made his first harvest in his own cellars and began to sell his wines to consumers. His first ever harvest earned him his first Gold Medal for his Chardonnay at the Jura Wine Contest. Daniel and his wife Monique have continued to work on the quality of their wines...

The terroir-centric producer Albert Boxler devotes much time, love, and care into producing each vintage of their Crémant d'Alsace. This sparkling wine is made in the labor-intensive traditional method from a blend of Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, and Pinot Noir. The grapes are harvested by hand, and the juice is racked by gravity into tank. Bottles are hand-rotated in the cellar and spend 24-30 months aging on the lees. It is very dry in style and consistently one of Alsace's best Crémants.

Can Mayol, which bottles under the trademarked name "Loxarel," is a winery that has farmed organically for 15 years. The Mitjan family, owners of Can Mayol, also employ some biodynamic treatments. They keep animals, including chickens, a horse, and a donkey named Garnatxa. While the focus is on "Brut Nature" (no dosage added) sparkling wine production, they also produce some very interesting still wines. In their chalky, high-altitude vineyards (above 2,400 feet for their highest vines, among the highest in the Penedès D.O.), Xarel-lo, Macabeo, Parellada...

2016 Diatom (Brewer-Clifton) "Hilliard Bruce Vineyard" Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay
Top Pick!
94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Starting with the 2016 Chardonnay Hilliard Bruce, it’s a classic Chardonnay from this appellation that offers lots of citrus rind, salty minerality, spice and orange blossom aromas and flavors." (08/2017) 93 points Vinous: "The 2016 Chardonnay Hilliard Bruce is rich and textured on the palate, with a flavor profile that leans towards the riper end of the spectrum while retaining the freshness and energy that are such Diatom signatures. (AG)" (09/2017) 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Freshly cut Anjou pear, crisp apple, hints of ho...

2016 Byron "Bien Nacido Vineyard" Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay (Elsewhere $40) (Elsewhere $40)
Top Pick!
94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Chardonnay Bien Nacido comes from vines planted in the 1980s as well as some newer plantings. Both portions were barrel fermented, and the wine saw about 50% new oak. It has a lovely nose of chamomile, honey toast, toasted hazelnut, lemon curd and orange zest hints plus notes of dried leaves, white peach and nectarine—this has nice layering of ripe fruit and winemaking spice. Medium to full-bodied, it explodes in the mouth with ripe, honeyed, peachy fruit and a lovely frame of spice, with a wonderful sil...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a well-made, well-integrated showcase of the appellation, with crisp flavors of apple, ginger and Asian pear. Hearty in texture and style, it has a lasting bite of anise on the full-bodied finish. (VB)" (06/2019) 90 points James Suckling: "Attractive, spicy pear and peach aromas with tropical notes, leading to a palate that has a rich, fleshy and gently creamy fruit core. Baking spices to close." (10/2018)

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 White Wine from Tenshen is made from a blend of Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Chardonnay sourced from sites throughout the Central Coast. Brought up mostly in neutral barrels, with a small part in stainless, it offers rich, full-bodied aromas and flavors of buttered peach, tangerine, honeysuckle and flowers. Richly textured, balanced and with a clean, dry finish, it’s a terrific white Rhône blend readers should check out." 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The eponymous 2016 Tricó is a classic Albariño from 25- to 35-year-old vineyards on poor granite soils that give low yields. The full clusters are pressed, then the juice is let to settle before fermenting at low temperature with neutral yeasts. This stays at least one year in tank before it's bottled. These are serious and subtle wines, not exuberant or showy, with good ripeness and very high compensating acidity, but the wines don't feel acidic. This has the advantage of time and has developed further complexit...

Elisabeth and Jean-Marie only made 400 of these magnums, and we only got 12 of them! It is all Chardonnay, half from Elisabeth's best plot in Ay and half Louvois from Jean-Marie's best plot. It is a very limey, Puligny-Montrachet like expression of blanc de blancs, and dosed at just 4 grams per liter. -Gary Westby, K&L

2016 Pierre Paillard "Les Maillerettes" Brut Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Champagne
New!
This powerful Pinot Noir Champagne comes from a less than 1/2 acre parcel in the grand cru of Bouzy planted in 1970 called Les Maillerettes. These old Pinot vines are the source for the massal selections used by the Paillard family for the rest of their plantations. This bottling, which will cellar for a very long time, also shows quite well right now. While I would not recommend this as a party bottle, graduates of Champagne will find one of the best expressions of real Pinot in this majestic wine. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)

2016 Pierre Paillard "Les Mottelettes" Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Champagne
New!
Blanc de blancs from Bouzy? Yes--and what a blanc de blancs it is! This single-varietal, single-vineyard, single-harvest Champagne comes entirely from the Les Motellettes parcel which was planted in 1961. Quentin Paillard, his brother and his father all wanted to make terroir Champagne from their best, oldest plots--the very plots that they use to propagate the massal selections for the rest of their vineyard. This Chardonnay has understated power and is perhaps the most subtle, complex young Champagne that I have ever had. We only managed to get four ca...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Chardonnay Alpine Vineyard is a stunning young wine that's one of the best whites Rhys has produced to date. Opening up with vivid aromas of lemon oil, citrus pith, crisp apple and nutmeg, it's fuller-bodied, glossier and more textural than the Horseshoe bottling, with a broader attack as well. But it's also intensely saline and mineral, with wonderful concentration and intensity. (WK)" (05/2018) 95 points Vinous: "The 2016 Chardonnay Alpine Vineyard is fascinating to taste next to the Horseshoe, as it...

94 points Wine & Spirits: "The Trimbach family leases the vineyards at the Couvent de Ribeauvillé and started making a wine from this sector of the Geisberg grand cru in 2009. This 2016 is the third vintage they have released from this 6.5-acre parcel. It’s a wine of silken richness and savory floral power, delivered with the ease and nonchalance of a great site. While the grandeur of the wine is already apparent, it will require several years of cellar time to reach its full expression." (08/2021) 94 points Wine Spectator: "Pretty honeysuckle and flin...

Jean-François creates a stunning number of cuvées, ranging between thirty-five and forty every year! His methodology goes far beyond the details of the average vigneron. For some, his process would be maddening, as each cuvée calls for a highly individualized élévage. All of his wines are de-stemmed by hand, each cluster carefully trimmed with scissors. Jean-François is committed to minute doses of sulfur, so low in fact, that many fear it hurting the wines during transport. He curbs this issue entirely by aging many of his whites on the lees for extende...

Goldeneye in Anderson Valley has long been considered one of the benchmark producers of the region. Their Pinot Noirs have been consistent best sellers here at K&L for at least a decade. When we were offered some of their vintage Brut Rosé, a wine typically reserved for winery direct purchase, we jumped at the chance and weren't disappointed! Winemaker's Notes: "Anderson Valley has earned acclaim for the complexity and distinctiveness of its sparkling wines. Made from our very best blocks of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, our vibrant and alluring Goldeneye B...

2016 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, Pessac-Léognan (Elsewhere $130) (Elsewhere $130)
Top Pick!
99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The white of the vintage is the 2016 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, which comes from a high-density planting of 30-year-old vines located west and south of the town of Léognan. A blend of 75% Sauvignon and 25% Sémillon raised in 35% new barrels, it offers a massive bouquet of crushed citrus, salty minerality, white flowers, and grapefruit. Racy, full-bodied, concentrated and beautifully textured, it’s a brilliant wine that has more flesh and texture than the 2015 and will keep for two decades or more. Hats off to the team at Domaine ...

90 points Vinous: "Just sniffing the 2016 Demi-Sec, you know it's going to be welcoming and juicy with its soft nectarine fruit and lick of residual sugar caressing the palate and adding flesh. Considering it is five years old, it remains relatively primary in its fruit flavors, with only the merest hint of ground almond character hinting that it's about to head into the next stage of its life. While the sweetness of the fruit remains on the finish, the refreshing natural acidity of this cool climate and the natural grip of the Chenin grape provide the c...

94 points Decanter: "Excellence from a good co-op: fine, lifted, mineral-toned fruit joins crisp acidity and a long, savoury finish. (MG)" (03/2020) K&L Notes: Producer's notes: "It is the wine with which Belisario has experienced the greatest emotions. It was the first Verdicchio in the Riserva type. Produced since 1988 only with Verdicchio grapes vinified with the method of cryomaceration. It matures in steel and partly in toasted oak barrels for at least a year and is refined for another year in the bottle. The complexity of the production is the c...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I was blown away by the 2016 Chenin Blanc Mt. Pajaro (this is a new vineyard recently planted by Rhys) and this is unquestionably the finest expression of this variety I’ve tasted from California. From a site in the Santa Cruz Mountains, it boasts tons of flinty minerality and tart citrus to go with a concentrated, deep, medium to full-bodied vibe on the palate." 90 points Vinous: "Luminous straw-gold. Varietally accurate aromas and flavors of smoke, grilled pork, white pepper and tropical fruit, but this has a lemony zing that gives a graceful mouthfeel despite a hint of chewy tannins at the back. The finish is long and ripe. Trimbach does not make this every year but only when they are able to buy good-quality grapes (the wine is made with roughly 95% purchased grapes). The most recent previous Gewürz Réserve was the 2011. About 14,000 bottles made. (ID)" (04/2018)

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Vivid oaky, earthy aromas lead to ripe firm flavors of apple and citrus in this assertive and well-structured wine. The char and wood-smoke nuances carry over to the palate, along with a nice nip of tannin and firm acidity that help to offset the richness. (JG)" (05/2019) K&L Notes: All from Roederer Estate's Organic / Biodynamic vineyards in Anderson Valley. A phenomenal deal in everyday Chardonnay.

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Alesia Chardonnay Anderson Valley offers up an inviting bouquet of green orchard fruit, struck match, blanched almonds and subtle nutmeg. On the palate, it's medium-bodied and succulent, with a more rounded, giving profile than its Santa Cruz Mountains counterpart but displays good cut and vitality, concluding with a youthfully chalky finish. This is the most accessible Chardonnay in the Rhys portfolio, but I'd expect it to drink well for the better part of a decade... beginning with the 2016 vintage, ap...

92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Chablis 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre has such a pretty, winsome bouquet with scents of pressed white flowers, white peach, subtle smoke and walnut aromas. The palate is flinty on the entry with wonderful tension. This is not a powerful Chablis but one that emphasizes the terroir and is blessed with a precise, elegant and persistent finish. This is an outstanding effort by Benoît Droin and clearly the pick of his premier crus this year.(NM)" (08/2017) 92-94 points Vinous: "(began in 25% oak): Light yel...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "93+ points "The second vintage for this amazing and unusual sparkling Txakoli, the 2016 Izar-Leku was produced by the traditional method of second fermentation in bottle, where the wine spent 18 months, but the base wine was with lees for a year (one-third in barrel) before it was put in bottle. The bottles are kept at low temperature, 13 degrees Celsius and nowadays at 11.5 degrees Celsius, which makes for a slower fermentation that produces very fine bubbles. They have not disgorged all the bottles and some are...

A very exciting traditional method (bottle fermented) Chenin Blanc from old vines at the revered Jurassic Park Vineyard. John and Alex at Birichino never stop experimenting...but thankfully their failure rate seems to be just about zero! An early pick kept the acids high for this sparkler and that in turn balances the richness and power of these 40+ year old vines. Winery Notes: "Honeyed, saline, savory and immensely persistent, the 2016 Chenin was the product of an early September pick at a very modest sugar level, suitable for sparkling wine. Fermentat...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Bottled with 13% alcohol at the end of July 2019 but filtered in early 2017, the 2016 Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Smaragd offers a fascinatingly clear, fresh and coolish apricot aroma intermixed with morel/mushroom aromas and flinty notes of crushed stones. Full-bodied, round and fleshy on the palate, this is a generous and mouth-filling wine with rather delicate acidity and a slightly bitter, well-structured finish with lingering salinity and mineral freshness. Very promising. Tasted from lot 1420619 at the ...

Kabaj (Ka-bye) have farmed their vineyards for many generations. When Katja Kabaj met French oenologist Jean-Michel Morel after his stint at an Italian winery, they fell in love and eventually married. Jean-Michel brought some of those Italian and French sensibilities to the winery along with his fondness for working with amphorae. Those who have tasted Kabaj whites know that these wine range from light to full skin contact for the whites and the Rebula is probably one of their most noteworthy. It is aged for 30 days on the skin and then for about a year...

96 points John Gilman: "The 2016 les Preuses from Domaine Fèvre is another brilliant young wine. The bouquet shows all of the mineral complexity of this great terroir, wafting from the glass in a refined mix of grapefruit, pear, white flowers, lime zest, a hint of beeswax and a glorious bath of limestone minerality. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, long and very solid at the core, with stunning backend mineral drive, lovely focus and grip and a very long, very pure and dancing finish." 93 points Decanter: "A blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Roussanne, Sémillon and Clairette from 12 different vineyards, this 2016 is the product of a small crop. The team were forced to pick earlier than usual. It has a richer nose of baked apple, followed on the palate by fresh green apple as well as apple crumble flavours. It has a lemony acidity with some mineral touches, allied to a fuller, richer texture than previous years thanks to a lower pH."
