2008 Henri Goutorbe "Special Club" Grand Cru Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
Henri Goutorbe's "Special Club" bottling from the 2008 vintage is a truly remarkable Champagne. Apart from the fact that it hails from one of Champagne's most acclaimed modern vintages and is all Ay Grand Cru, its designation bears a particular clout. The "Special Club" wines are denoted as such by large committee of nearly every significant grower-producer in the region. After blind tasting the submissions from various domaines, the committee makes a determination as to whether each wine deserves to be counted in the "Special Club". The standards for in...

96 points Decanter: "An undramatic, cloud-filled season came right in a late harvest in October. A textbook cool vintage of great ageing potential. The perfect 50/50 balance of mineral-stamped Chardonnay and powerful, masculine Pinot makes this a champagne for patient drinkers, as it will take time to reach its peak. Vibrant acidity is joined by notes of white flowers and that magnificent mineral structure. (ME)" (06/2018) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Packed with fruit while hinting at mature toastiness, this wine is now in perfect balance. Its white fr...

2008 Melville "Donna's" Sta. Rita Hills Syrah
Back In Stock!
98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This was reviewed highly by my Colleague Robert Parker on release, and he nailed this wine. The 2008 Syrah Donna's is a true powerhouse that has incredible amounts of fat, texture and glycerol while staying fresh, light and even elegant. Still youthful and lively, with black and blue fruits, graphite, camphor, roasted herbs and spice, it has remarkable purity, sweet, polished tannin and a great finish. There's certainly no harm in drinking this today, but it has another 10-15 years of longevity as well. Drink thr...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The current vintage of the special cuvée is the 2008 Kripta, a classical blend of the local grapes Macabeo, Xarello and Parellada aged in contact with the lees in bottle for a long time, no less than five years, during which time the bottle is closed with a cork (it's usually a crown stopper). Apparently this gives the wine a different character and is the way it was traditionally done. This is a polished Cava with yeast and brioche aromas and a soft palate with clean, developed flavors and integrated acidity. A ...

90 points Wine Spectator: "Aromas of roasted herb, dried currant, sage and underbrush are full-bodied and complex, savory and alluring, approachable already. (JL)" (11/2011) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Both [2007 & 2008] of these Cabernet Sauvignons are soft, elegant, dark ruby/plum/garnet-colored, evolved, medium-bodied efforts with attractive notes of spice, earth, red and black currants intermixed with herbs and background oak... Heidi Barrett is the consulting winemaker and the well-known Jim Barbour is the viticultural manager. Both are identi...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 DOIX Costers Vinyes Velles reveals a deep purple color with outstanding aromatic complexity. Notes of liquid minerality, licorice, lavender, Asian spices, and black cherry lead to a supple, savory effort loaded with spice and personality. There is a nicely concealed structure that will allow the wine to evolve for several years although it is approachable now. (JM)" (05/2011) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. A pungent, highly aromatic bouquet evokes blackberry, cherry...

92-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The deep ruby-colored 2008 Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard (a 10-acre parcel planted at 1,400 feet) possesses a big, sweet, powerful nose of raspberries, spring flowers, damp earth, and mossy, foresty vegetation. Sweet currants, pomegranates, and black raspberries also emerge on the palate of this full-bodied effort. With excellent acidity and delineation as well as a weighty, long, rich mouthfeel with lots of structure and tannin, this enormously promising wine suggests a long life if stored in a cold cellar. (RP)...

2008 Kamen "Estate" Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Back In Stock!
93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dense purple-colored 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals abundant notes of volcanic ash, burning embers, black currants and blueberries. The quality of the oak is very high, but subtle, and the wine possesses soft tannins, full body, lots of concentration and moderate tannin. Three to four years of cellaring will be beneficial and this big 2008 should age nicely for two decades. I am including these two Sonoma offerings in the Napa report because they come from a vineyard just on the other side of the Napa County...

Bid on this bottle of 2008 Saxum "Booker Vineyard" Paso Robles Syrah-Mourvèdre (98RP, 96JD, 96WS, 94ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Booker Vineyard (92% Syrah and 8% Mourvèdre, which had also been bottled immediately before my visit) has an opaque purple color and a wonderfully sweet nose of black cherry, black currant, licorice, incense, and some Asian spices. The wine has seamless lushness, a voluptuous texture, stunning purity, and a very long, 40-second-plus finish. Booker is another top site that I believe was planted with Justin Smith’s help. It is a 40-acre vineyard sitting on similar limestone soils. This incredible wine would probably benefit from a couple of years of cellaring, as the structure is more present, no doubt due to the high level of Syrah in the wine. (RP)" (08/2010)
