2008 López de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" Reserva Rioja
Top Pick!
95 points James Suckling: "Lots of dried fruit with plum, light raisin, chocolate and toasted oak. Some balsamic undertones. White truffles and dried flowers. Medium body, creamy tannins and savory, balsamic undertones. Extreme and unique, as always." (11/2020) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The nose of the 2008 Viña Tondonia Reserva is very elegant, fresh and with an herbal twist, starting to show the complexity of the aged wines that are sometimes still too young when they are released 10+ years from the vintage! The palate is medium-bodie...

We recently received a parcel of these beautifully mature wines from Balcom Family. The wines were made by renowned winemaker, Craig Becker, formerly of Robert Mondavi, Opus One, Spring Mountains Vineyards, and currently Director of Winemaking at Sommerston Estate. The fruit for these wines was sourced from Constant Vineyard high on Diamond Mountain, and Somerston Estate's hillside blocks in Napa's Vaca Mountains. The wine's name, "Mascaret," pays tribute to the Bordeaux region that inspired the wine. The Mascaret is a wave, or tidal bore, that runs up t...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "It shows the intensity and purity of Howell Mountain fruit, bearing deep flavors of blackberries, blueberries, dark chocolate and currants, with big firm tannins that are characteristic of the mountain." (11/2012)

94 points Vinous: "Deep ruby with an amber rim. Brooding coffee and cocoa nuances complicate rich dark cherry and blackberry syrup on the nose. Large-scaled, dense and juicy, showing tactile flavors of dark berries and chocolate complemented by a note of underbrush. This long, smoothly tannic wine pulls off the neat trick of being a behemoth while staying light on its feet. Still, it needs a lot of time to show its best. (ID) 94+" (09/2015) 92 points Wine Spectator: "A finely honed red, with dense, sculpted tannins and a rich, smoky undertow. Flavors o...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 High Road James Berry Vineyard comes across as beautiful and sensual, with layers of dark fruit, spices, leather and tobacco that meld together gracefully. Floral notes add a sense of lift and polish on the understated finish. Ideally this could use a little more mid-palate pliancy, but it is quite attractive all the same. In 2008 the blend is 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre, which were co-fermented with 30% whole clusters. The wine was aged for 20 months in French oak. (AG)" (08/2011) 92 po...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Syrah—this is a focused wine, with complex nuances of licorice, tar, mineral and lead pencil, but it is buttressed by the compact, concentrated red and black fruits. The dusty tannins are reminiscent of a Napa wine, with excellent length and polish. *Cellar Selection* (PG)" (07/2012) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Dense and focused, with fine, chewy tannins around a core of savory cherry, plum and herb flavors, hinting at game bird and fresh mushroom as the finish lingers expressively. 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Buty's Right Bank-ish Merlot/Cab Franc is wild and slightly brambly, with dark streaks of iron and pencil lead, moist earth and herb. Hints of green coffee creep into the finish; this is most definitely a red wine from a cooler site in a cooler vintage, but with the classic structure of Bordeaux. (PG)" (08/2010) K&L Notes: This wine is a blend of 79% Merlot from the Connor Lee Vineyard and 21% Cabernet Franc from Champoux Vineyard.

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "There's a very good wine in here, but the winery has released it far too early, which shifts the burden of cellaring to the buyer. Right now it's all primary fruit, acidity and oak. But the fruit is beautifully layered in tiers of roasted blackberries, grilled cherries and cola, and the oak is splendid. This dry, silky wine desperately needs to be held until at least late 2010, and should drink well through 2014. *Cellar Selection* " (12/2009) K&L Notes: Maritime is W.H. Smith's cuvée of the best Pinot Noir from the vintage....

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Released at the age of one year, which is disappointing as the wine will surely gain in the bottle. It's young and acidic and fruity, with complex waves of cherries, red currants, beef tartare, sautéed wild mushrooms with a splash of soy and balsamic, orange zest, pepper and the sweet sandalwood of smoky oak. Very fine, but needs at least a year in the bottle." (12/2009) K&L Notes: A number of small, high-quality producers have made wine from the Hellenthal vineyard in recent years. Called by Antonio Galloni "one of the most...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Syrah Lagniappe was aged for 15 months in French barriques and puncheons. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it reveals a perfume of Asian spices, mineral, lavender, smoked meat, and blueberry. On the palate it is round and elegant with no hard edges to be found. Medium-bodied, spicy, and pleasure-bent, it will drink well over the next 8-10 years. (JSM)" (08/2010) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Spicy, with rose peppercorn and oregano overtones to the dark berry and espresso flavors, riding easily over po...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 5 Blocks Cuvee is another juicy red bursting with flavor. It shows off plums, black cherries, flowers and minerals in a juicy, highly engaging style. The 5 Blocks Cuvee is 59% Syrah, 25% Grenache, 8% Mourvedre and 8% Cinsault that spent 20 months in French oak barrels, 45% new. (AG)" (08/2011) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Pure, clean, ripe and grapey aromas gain depth and complexity, with tiers of juicy black cherry, wild berry, plum and floral scents. Full-bodied and supple in texture, with a long, soot...

From Robert Parker: "Matt Trevisan is one of Paso Robles’ up-and-coming stars. He’s doing everything right, and it’s good to see him planting a new estate vineyard of nearly 18 acres, building a new wine cellar, and taking full advantage of the gorgeous limestone soils on the hillsides of West Paso Robles. Trevisan has also been ahead of the curve in realizing that the finest Paso Robles wines are usually blends. Undeniably, he has demonstrated a Midas touch when it comes to assembling innovative blends. He is also the only winemaker in this region that...

93 points Vinous: "Vivid ruby. Sappy raspberry and intense floral aromas show an almost liqueur-like quality. Supple and extremely aromatic, with strong raspberry and cherry flavors complemented by candied rose and Asian spices framed by ripe acidity. Conveys an impression of energy and expands on the long, sweet, very pure finish. This wine is extremely pretty. (JR)" (12/2010) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Pinot Noir Zotovich has a dark ruby color, but is relatively shy in alcohol for a B-C Pinot (12.8%). Pomegranate, plum, raspbe...

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. Enticing aromas of black raspberry, cherry, licorice and smoky herbs. Sweet and juicy but tight, with firm flavors of red and dark berries, bitter cherry, spices and candied rose. Quite rich but surprisingly fine, with strong finishing cut and mineral-driven persistence. I like this wine's mix of power and energy. (ST)" (05/2010) Wine Spectator: "On the tart side of ripeness, featuring sour berry, cherry, mineral and spice. This is full-bodied, a bit simpler from the midpalate on, but ...

Wine Enthusiast: "Dry and silky, it offers complex flavors of cola, black raspberries, figs, cinnamon and sandalwood, with a long, spicy finish." (12/2009)
Price: $39.99

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Vivid red. Deep, pungent nose combines raspberry, blackberry, Asian spices, flowers and cola. Sappy, seamless and sweet, showing lively mineral character and sweet red fruit and floral pastille flavors. This focused, taut wine is quite elegant, finishing with alluring spiciness, a dusting of silky tannins and a distinctly floral element." (12/2010) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Pinot Noir Rincon Vineyard is one of the more delicate, reserved wines in this line-up. Bright cherri...

Wine Spectator: "Trim and medium-weight, with modest loamy earth and fresh blueberry fruit that has an herbal edge. (JL, Web Only-2010)" K&L Notes: WH Smith was founded in 1974 by Bill and Joan Smith. The winery splits its focus between Napa Valley cabernet and Sonoma Coast pinot noir.

Bid on this bottle of 2008 Barde-Haut, St-Emilion (93JD, 92WS, 90JS, 90VN). Jeb Dunnuck: "One of the standouts in the vintage is the 2008 Barde-Hau, which is the usual blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc brought up in 70-80% new French oak. It offers a rich, sexy style as well as lots of chocolaty dark fruits, dried herbs, graphite, and obvious minerality. With terrific minerality, impeccable balance, and a great finish, it’s a 2008 that’s going to continue dishing out loads of pleasure over the coming 10-15 years. Drink through 2034." (02/2019)
Starting Bid: $33.00
