The Havard brothers Michel and Hubert make cider from the 30 different varieties of apples they work with along with small batches of calvados. The rarity here is that single casks are usually kept back when harvests are on the small side, so the fact that just under a 100 bottles made it stateside after aging for 18 years, makes this extra special. Upon release, the 1999 vintage in the northern Rhône had a slightly higher reputation than the 1998s, but the Verset ’98 is clearly a small step up from his lovely 1999. The bouquet is deep and brilliant, as it soars from the glass in a blaze of black raspberries, dark berries, pepper, a touch of shoe polish, great stony minerality and a pungent topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very, very pure, with great focus and refinement, ripe tannins, tangy acids and great length and grip on the complex and still fairly primary finish. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is no longer so completely primary and while the nose has not yet reached full maturity, it is approaching it slowly but surely. The aromatic profile is very Vosne with ample blue and red berry fruit aromas cut with spice, earth and discreet game hints that lead to delicious, round and largely, if not completely, resolved middle weight flavors that display subtle mineral nuances on the long and lingering finish. While this could certainly be drunk now with pleasure, for my taste I would advise leaving the '98 Ech in the cellar for another 3 to 5 years and then drink over the next 10 to 15." (09/2010)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The star of the show from Bosquet des Papes was the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes. Fully mature, it reveals impressive notes of roasted garrigue, lots of cured meats, licorice and coffee bean notes to go with a ripe, full-bodied, textured feel on the palate. It has an old-school feel, yet is neither overtly rustic nor astringent. Drink it over the coming 4-5 years. A deep dark red, it opens with a huge nose of licorice, roses and cocoa, then flows onto the palate with masses of sweet, concentrated dark fruit that go on forever. Notes of mineral and leather gradually develop in the glass, adding further complexity as this great wine begins to reveal its expansive and profound personality. Domaine Dujac was born in 1967 when Jacques Seysses bought the 11-acre Domaine Marcel Graillet in Morey-St-Denis, adding plots in some of Burgundy's most famous vineyards over the years, including less than a hectare of vines in the Echézeaux Grand Cru in 1969. Critic Clive Coates wrote of the 1998 Dujac Echézeaux after a tasting in 2009: "Medium-full colour. Just a little fresher-looking than the 1996. Richer and more vigorous on the nose, with a touch of mocha. Fresh. Profound. Fullish body. Very ripe. Lovely fruit. No austerity. Better than the 1996. Very long and harmonious. Fine plus.
