1997 Hector Macbeth (Glenfiddich) 23 Year Old "Hepburn's Choice" K&L Exclusive Single Sherry Butt Finish Cask Strength Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
One of the original teaspooned malts here at K&L that longtime customers may already be familiar with is Hector Macbeth. While nearly all of this year's blended malts had another distiller's spirit dropped into it right before bottling, this was teaspooned at the time of production by the original maker with the intention of being sold off to the independent market. This is really how teaspooning came to be a thing in the first place. Blue chip distilleries, like Glenfiddich in this case, don’t want a bunch of people trading on their name. They do, howev...

We acquired a small parcel of this special selection via famed Italian Importer Ferdinando Fiori or Nadi. Signor Fiori became famous in whisky circles when he founded Intertrade Imports in the 1980s. High Spirits was established after the dissolution of that special label. Signor Fiori has established exceptional relationships with Scottish bottlers over the years and gets particularly good access. He's officially in retirement, but we're doing everything we can to convince him to select more casks for his special line. He's offered us a small slice of h...

91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is still very fresh with almost no secondary development on the nose and revealing ripe cherry, earth and game aromas followed by exuberant, rich, sweet and persistent flavors. While this is not particularly dense, the precision and minerality make for aA delicious effort that possesses none of the shortcomings of the '97 vintage. " (02/2004)

1997 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume
Back In Stock!
94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Baumard's 1997 Quarts de Chaume has been tasted five times over a six month period and it is a remarkably consistent wine. With extended aeration it appears to gain in focus and freshness, a trait that is surprising in the generally heavy and super-ripe 1997 vintage. Caramelized minerals and honeyed aromas are exuded by this dense, oily, jammy wine. On the palate, marzipan, candied grapefruit, and tropical fruits can de detected within its viscous, yet fresh, core. This massive offering will require some cellarin...

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. Cassis, violet and lightly tarry, spicy oak. Ripe, dense and very concentrated; thick and deep. Not at all overly sweet or dominated by the wood. Has superb material and verve. Finishes very long, with thoroughly ripe tannins. The finest vintage for this wine in a long time, and one that avoids the excesses of (American) oak that have plagued so many recent vintages. (ST)" (12/2000)

90 points Vinous: "The 1997 Pichon-Lalande is an off vintage that has held up extremely well for a wine now over two decades old. It has a lovely, mellow but quite generous bouquet of blackberry, briar, cedar and a subtle touch of mint. The palate is rounded on the entry and shows commendable depth. This is quite a voluminous wine, not nearly as complex as the 1996 yet bursting with savory red berry fruit mixed with leather and allspice. I agree with Nicolas Glumineau that it delivers a satisfying saline finish. This is drinking perfectly now, although l...

Bid on this bottle of 1997 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (94RP, 90ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa looks to be one of the finest wines made by the winemaking team of proprietor Justin Meyer and winemaker/viticulturist Daniel Baron. The 1997 Napa is an impressive effort. A blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, this wine has a flamboyant nose of fruitcake, licorice, Asian spice, black currants, and toasty wood. Deep, opulent, viscous, intense, chewy, and thick, it is a classic Napa Cabernet Sauvignon made in an all-American oak lovers' style. (RP)" (12/2000)
Starting Bid: $92.00

Bid on this 3 liter 1-bottle lot of 1997 Buehler "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (3L) (92WS). Wine Spectator: "Rich and concentrated, with tiers of currant, black cherry, mocha and wild berry, holding on to a sharply focused core of fruit and finishing long. (JL)" (11/2000)
Starting Bid: $150.00

Bid on this bottle of 1997 Nöel Verset Cornas (90VN). Vinous: "From another overlooked and often undervalued vintage, the 1997 Cornas shows a surprisingly youthful color, with smoky cherry and raspberry scents and notes of black olive, cracked pepper and pipe tobacco. Spicy, focused and light on its feet, it has silky, vaguely pinot-like texture and very good clarity to its sweet red fruit and spicecake flavors. It finishes bright and nervy, with no obvious tannins and lingering florality. While fully mature I wouldn't be at all surprised to find this wine drinking well ten years from now. (JR)" (01/2015)
Starting Bid: $360.00

Bid on this bottle of 1997 Michel Bonnefond (Roumier) Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru (92RP, 90VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dark colored 1997 Ruchottes-Chambertin is, as Roumier describes it, a "passionate" wine. Spicy red cherries, dense layers of currants, and hints of oak can be discerned in its profound aromatics. It is a sensual, satin-textured, feminine, deep, and marvelously structured, medium to full-bodied offering. Stony black fruits and red cherries can be found throughout its seductive personality and persistent, harmonious finish. (PR)" (10/1999)
Starting Bid: $370.00

Bid on this 3 liter 1-bottle lot of 1997 Jekel Vineyards "Winemaker's Collection" Monterey County Merlot (3L).
Starting Bid: $40.00

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1997 Gaja "Sperss" Nebbiolo Langhe (99RP, (95-97ST), 96VN, 94WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A virtually perfect effort is the 1997 Sperss, which represents the essence of truffles, earth, and black cherries in its striking aromatics and multidimensional, opulent, full-bodied palate. The acidity seems low because of the huge glycerin levels and prodigious concentration of fruit, but I suspect it is normal in the scheme of oenological measurement. (RP)" (06/2001)
Starting Bid: $945.00

Bid on this 3 liter 1-bottle lot of 1997 Santa Ema "Reserve" Merlot Maipo Valley Chile (3L). When it comes to making delicious Chilean wines, which taste like the grape on the front label and consistently over-deliver for value, Santa Ema continues to impress.

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1997 Heitz Cellar "Martha's Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (97DC, 97JG, 95VN, 94JS, 90RP). Decanter: "The 1997 is one of the modern-day icons from Martha's Vineyard, and only the second vintage to be produced after the 1993 replanting. A rich and complex bouquet of ripe black cherry, mint chocolate, cassis and mocha is the prelude to a plush, expansive palate with remarkable volume and intensity. The velvety quality of the tannins is particularly special. While this is certainly a ripe vintage, the Heitz team produced a wine with impeccable balance which is only just entering the beginning of its drinking window. Every time I encounter it, it seems better than the last. (WK)" (10/2017)
Starting Bid: $505.00

Bid on this bottle of 1997 Pavillon Rouge, Margaux. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "As I have noted previously, Chateau Margaux's second wine, Pavillon du Chateau Margaux, has come of age over recent vintages. The 1997, a 40% Merlot/60% Cabernet Sauvignon blend, is a slightly herbal, up-front, lushly-styled wine with plenty of pure fruit, medium body, and no harshness or aggressiveness in the finish. (RP)" (04/1998)
Starting Bid: $105.00

Bid on this 2-bottle tasting lot; including 1-bottle of 1997 Clark-Claudon Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (92RP, 92WE) and 1-bottle of 1997 Dalla Valle Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (93RP). Of the 1997 Dalla Valle Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "The 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon (2,800 cases from a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc) boasts an opaque purple color as well as a gorgeous nose of mineral-infused black currants, and spicy oak. Full-bodied, structured, muscular, and multi-dimensional, it is approachable, but best cellared for 2-4 years, and drunk over the following 20-25 years. (RP)" (12/2000)
