Old grain is becoming extremely rare and difficult to source. Where we once had unlimited access, we've been takenaback by how expensive even lesser grain has become. But quality single grain has also found an audience and this awesome Invergordon will be stupendous news for those already initiated and an enticing invitiation to those who are not. The Invergordon Distillery was founded relatively late in the Scotch game by famed blenders Whyte & Mackay. Built in 1959, it boasts 3 coffey style column stills and a massive capacity 36 million liters of alco...

1993 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
Back In Stock!
95 points Wine Advocate: "The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain reveals an opaque black color, huge tannin, terrific purity, and density, a broad, heavyweight mouthfeel, and gobs of ripe tannin. It is a massive Cabernet Sauvignon that requires a decade of cellaring — at the minimum. (RP)" (12/1996) 93 points Vinous: "The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is an excellent choice for drinking over the next decade or so, as it appears to be more of a mid-weight vintage for Dunn. Open and expressive today, the 1993 is a wine of balance and propo...

93 points Wine Advocate: "This has become an extraordinary wine. It boasts an opaque purple color, followed by a fabulous nose of licorice, jammy black-cherry, cassis fruit, minerals, and smoke. Powerful, full-bodied, moderately tannic yet exceptionally well-endowed, this wine needs another 2-4 years of cellaring; it will keep for 20+ years. The most limited-production Cabernet in the Phelps portfolio is the single-vineyard Backus Cabernet. It is a 6.75 acre parcel superbly situated south of the Oakville Crossroad next to such Napa heavyweights as Dalla ...

95 points Burghound: "(From magnum) With the exception of being perhaps slightly fresher, the '93 Clos des Epeneaux from magnum showed the same fantastic nose as the 750 ml version but what was different, in fact markedly so, was the harmony of the mid-palate and finish that displayed almost none of the prominent structural backbone. There was a beguiling sweetness to the flavors and finish with a velvety texture and superb length. A stunning showing and a wine that should continue to age well for years to come." (05/2015) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Su...

95 points Wine Spectator: "Dark, peppery and earthy overtones add substance to this chewy, remarkably complex red wine. It delivers a ripe core of plum and dried currant, then branches out, hinting at anise and mineral on the finish. Approachable now, but oh what a future this has. *Ranked #18 in Wine Spectator Top 100 of 1998* (HS)" (11/1998) 94 points James Halliday: "Medium to full red-purple; voluminous blackberry, licorice, black cherry and chocolate fruit aromas completely integrated with sweet vanillin oak on the bouquet; has a texture and struc...

Wine Advocate: "The best of the 1993 Ceretto offerings, this Barolo is soft, supple, and Burgundian-like in its complex aromas of herbs, sweet dried cherry fruit, and underbrush. (RP)" (08/1997)

An absolute gem in the Perfect Fifth line up. At 96 points it's close to the legendary Highland Park they've also bottled, but for half the price. Jim Murray says, "Anyone who remembers the old Springbank 25-year-olds of the early 1990s will recognize this aroma as a direct descendent - indeed it is near enough identical in both weight and character. The huge, nuggety oak is faultless (this must have come from a cask which had been seasoned in the old - virtually lost - style). Salt dominates but there are dried apricots and spiced pear, too. Meanwhile t...

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1993 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (Balthus Label) (90JS, 90RP, 90WS). Wine Advocate: "After less than persuasive performances in two potentially great years, 1989 and 1990, Mouton-Rothschild appears to have settled down, producing fine efforts in recent vintages, culminating with the enormously promising, unquestionably profound 1995. The 1993 is a beautifully made wine which could be considered a sleeper of the vintage. The wine boasts a dark purple color, followed by a sweet, pain grillee, roasted nut, and cassis-scented bouquet that is just beginning to open. In the mouth, the wine may not possess the body and volume of a vintage such as 1990 or 1989, but there is more richness of fruit, a sweet, ripe, pureness to the wine, as well as medium body and outstanding balance. (RP)" (12/1997)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1993 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche Grand Cru (95BH, 95WS). Wine Spectator: "Light red. Beautiful nose, very youthful and pure. A vegetal note emerges with air. Packed with dense fruit and marked by a very firm structure of both acidity and dense tannins. The fruit is locked up right now in this massive, powerful La Tâche. Rather than open in the glass, this appears to close up, but have faith; this will be great. *Cellar Selection* (BS)" (06/2006)
