The Hart family have been licensed victuallers and publicans in Paisley on the outskirts of Glasgow since the 18th Century, but it was in 1964 that brothers Iain & Donald Hart incorporated the company as Wine & Spirit Wholesalers and Scotch Whisky Blenders. Alistair Hart, who still selects casks for this special line today, came on as Chief Blender in 1975. His charge at the time was to secure and select the finest casks of single malt that were not readily available to the market. Their commitment to excellence is second to none in the industry and they...

We've discovered a tiny remaining allotment of rare, single-cask Borderies Cognacs. Barrels #22 and #151 present a particularly interesting comparison. Both were distilled in 1992 and separated at birth. Barrel #22 found its way into a very humid cellar, while barrel #151 was aged in a dry cellar. They were bottled 22 years later at cask strength and without chill filtration or coloring/sugar. The result is an incredible study in how Cognac ages and the effects of the aging environment. Barrel #22, the Wet Cellar, offers unparalleled elegance. At a cask ...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1992 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection (a February, 1996 release) is superior to the 1991 and 1990. The 1992 displays an opaque ruby-purple color, followed by huge, full-throttle aromatics offering a blast of sweet, toasty new oak combined with exceptional red and black fruits. Full-bodied, rich, and concentrated, with not a hard edge to be found. (RP)" (12/1995) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Maturing in color and taste, with a mix of dill, cedar, plum, coffee, pencil shavings and herbal notes. Smooth-te...

Once better known as the Lemmon-Chabot vineyard, this site has been a mainstay for Beringer's prestige reserve collection over the years. It is justly famous for the wonderous Cabernet Sauvignon grown here. What makes the vineyard so special, and the wines that are made from it so long-lived and complex, is a unique soil type that is high in obsidian. This black glass-like rock absorbs the sun and its warmth, and passes this onto the ripening grapes. Always worth seeking out, Beringer's Cabernet from the Chabot vineyard, can mature happily for decades.

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Made from a blend of fruit from four vineyards, Bancroft Ranch (57%), State Lane (now known as the Kapcsandy Vineyard) (21%), St. Helena Home Vineyard (14%) and Chabot (5%), 1992’s growing season was in total contrast to the preceding vintages. It was warm, even hot, with early bud break and some unusual rain in June. However, the following months were super-dry and hot, which caused an early start to the harvest. It turned out to be a classic Napa vintage in its exuberance and rich fruit. Although totally dry, i...

Upstart bottler The Perfect Fifth is sourcing some truly unusual and rare barrels for their inaugural release. An unexpected addition to the line up of ultra-premium whiskies released by the new bottler, this old malt from the "other" Campbeltown distillery is not to be ignored. Packaged in a unique wooden barrel case, it achieved "Liquid Gold Award" status and 94 points from preeminent whisky critic Jim Murray. Here are his impressions: "Nose: Playful, teasing smoke offers an unlikely sharpness to the already busy barley. For its big age, this malt is a...

Wine Spectator: "Young and tight, as currant, herb, coffee and cedar flavors wrestle with the tannins but emerge on aftertaste. Needs cellaring to soften the rough spots" (02/1996)

Bid on this 3 liter 1-bottle lot of 1992 Diamond Creek "Duke's Anniversary - Volcanic Hill" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (3L) in original wood. Al and Boots Brounstein founded Diamond Creek Vineyards in 1968. The three vineyards Brounstein planted have produced some of the most long-lived, elegant wines from the state of California, wines that make the case "that Diamond Creek is the finest producer of Cabernet Sauvignon in America," according to wine writer Pierre DuMont. This bottling comes from the eight-acre Volcanic Hill vineyard, which has ashy volcanic soils deposited by the eruption of Mt. Konocti eight million years ago. The wines from this site are Diamond Creek's longest lived, "loaded with intense ripe berry fruit, cassis, violets and a smoky richness," according to the winery.

Bid on this bottle of 1992 Léoville-Las Cases, St-Julien (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In the bottle, Leoville Las-Cases confirms the outstanding quality of the cask samples I tasted with Michel Delon. Only 45% of the harvest made it into this wine. The result is another classic Leoville Las-Cases with a sweet blackcurrant and toasty mineral-scented nose, bold, medium to full-bodied flavors with excellent richness (there are layers of fruit in this 1992), and a long, tannic finish. The wine can be drunk now or cellared for 12-15 years. It is an outstanding success for the vintage, revealing Leoville Las-Cases' classic style. With elegance and a flattering precociousness, it is more charming at a younger age than Las-Cases is from blockbuster vintages such as 1990, 1989, 1986, 1985, and 1982. This is one of the top stars of the vintage! (RP)" (12/1994)

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1992 Fonseca Vintage Port (94WS). Wine Spectator: "Intensely fruity on the nose, with lots of blackberry and violet. Full-bodied and lightly sweet, with slightly astringent tannins and a medium finish. Silky. Still very tight. Needs time. (JS)" (05/2005)

Bid on this 3 liter 1-bottle lot of 1992 Duckhorn "Three Palms Vineyard" Napa Valley Merlot (3L) in original wood. Dan Duckhorn founded his eponymous winery in 1976, and by the early 1980s was producing the most highly sought-after examples of Merlot from the Napa Valley. He has produced a vineyard-designated bottling from the Three Palms Vineyard, owned by brothers John and Sloan Upton, since 1978. The site is covered with volcanic stones that absorb the sun's heat during the day, and make for luscious, ripe Merlots.

Bid on this 375 ml 4-bottle lot of 1992 Quinta do Infantado Vintage Port (375ml) (95RP, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There were only 1,000 cases produced of the 1992 Vintage Port, and they are not likely to languish on retailers' shelves. A saturated, black/purple color is followed by a huge, ripe, pure nose of jammy blackberry and cassis fruit that is vaguely reminiscent of such great 1990 Hermitages as Chapoutier's Le Pavillon, Jaboulet's La Chapelle, or Chave's red label Cuvee Cathelin. Awesome concentration, massive body, an unctuous texture oozing with fruit, glycerin, and extract, and a blockbuster finish all suggest this will be a monumental port. (RP)" (02/1995)
