According to Jasper Morris: "The Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pére et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731 though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house, Joseph Henriot, acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Today Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet while the wines are made by Philippe Prost who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005, enabling them, to process all their wines with optimum effi...

This landmark 1988 vintage has never been re-casked. It has matured over 30 years in our warehouses in the same wood it was originally filled into – refill bourbon and, unusually, rare refill squat hogsheads. The subtle influence of these refill oak casks has resulted in a delicate and measured relationship between spirit and wood, quietly cultivated over time. It was always understood that this small parcel of casks required no interference, no guiding hand; just a watchful eye and palate to see it through. It is definitive, old, Bourbon-aged Bruichladd...

Bid on this bottle of 1988 Moët & Chandon "Dom Pérignon" Brut Champagne (94VN, 93RP, 93WS, 92JG). Vinous: "An unexpected treat, the 1988 Dom Pérignon is a fabulous surprise. Here the flavors are bright, focused and tense, with attractive floral and citrus notes that cut through the richness of the chilled lobster appetizer. (AG)" (03/2014)
Starting Bid: $460.00

Bid on this bottle of 1988 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (93JS, 92WS). James Suckling: "There's licorice here along with mint, some lead pencil and flowers. It's full and round displaying wonderful vanilla and plum flavors. Very silky and refined yet dense and caressing. A beauty, though it does turn a little dry, always revealing its wood." (11/2015)
Starting Bid: $378.00

Bid on this magnum of 1988 Opus One Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (1.5L) (94DC, 92VN, 91RP). Decanter: "This wine stands out in the line-up, with spicy black olive and rosemary notes, great concentration of fruit and an expansive feel through the mid-palate. Low yields from a growing season that was not easy, and interestingly here the alcohol has tipped over 13% and we don't see it under that level again. Firm tannins that are still very much holding court, and this has plenty of life ahead. 28 days skin contact. (JA)" (09/2019)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1988 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage (98VN, 97DC, 95JD, 95RP, 92JG). Vinous: "One of my favorite wines of the night, the 1988 Hermitage is simply breathtaking in its beauty and profoundness. Sage, rosemary, sweet tobacco and dried flowers are some of the many notes that lift from the glass in a translucent, weightless, yet wonderfully deep wine. May I have another glass, please? Wow... Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1988 Casetta "Vigna Ausario" Barbaresco. Fratelli Casetta is located in Vezza d’Alba, at the heart of the Roero area of Piedmont. The family is been making wine since the 1700s, so it makes sense that their style is very traditional. Large format Slavonian oak barrels are used for the aging of their red wines, with very few barriques. Casetta has never had a huge import presence in the United States, so their wines are fairly rare in this market. Wine Spectator rates 1988 as one of the two notable vintages from the 1980s.

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1988 Gaja Barbaresco. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1988 Barbaresco offers the classic nose of dried cherries, herbs, cedar, and toasty oak. In the mouth, it is medium to full-bodied, with considerable tannic clout. The long finish is dominated by the wine's tannins. It should benefit from 3-4 years of cellaring and keep for 10-15. All of Gaja's 1988 Barbarescos are backward, reserved wines. Even after sitting four days with the corks pulled they exhibited no signs of oxidation. While they should be uncommonly long-lived, I did not see quite the flesh and richness possessed by such vintages as 1985 and 1982. (RP)"
Starting Bid: $300.00

Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 1988 Philippe Leclerc Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Cazetiers" (95RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers was on par with the great wines from the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. The fabulously exotic, rich, multidimensional bouquet was followed by gorgeous layers of extract, layer upon layer of smoky, herb-tinged fruit flavors, soft tannins, a full body, and a finish that must last several minutes. (RP)" (12/1989)
Starting Bid: $325.00

Bid on this bottle of 1988 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac (94WS, 91RP, 91VN). Wine Spectator: "Dark brick-red color, with a garnet edge. Aromas of dark chocolate, meat and currant. Full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe fruit and round tannins. Goes on and on. Very balanced, with a beautiful mouthfeel. Long life ahead. This has always been a serious wine. (JS, Web-2009)"
Starting Bid: $130.00

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1988 Rieussec, Sauternes (95RP, 90ST, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted in Sauternes with Charles Chevalier, the 1988 Rieussec is a vintage that Chevalier himself claimed to be his favorite. I can understand why. It has an unerringly youthful bouquet with vibrant citrus fruit, wild honey, mandarin and mineral scents, a bouquet that seems to have electricity flowing through it. The same can be said for the palate that is full of tension and vigor, almost clinical in terms of focus with alluring viscosity and wonderful length. This bowled me over with its charm and breeding. Hunt a bottle down and share with your best friends—this is a superlative Rieussec, one of the best produced. (NM)" (01/2017)
