93 points John Gilman: "I have always liked the 1978 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, as the wine was already starting to drink very nicely at age ten and I have been a frequent visitor to its doorstep over the years. Though this wine has been drinking with lovely generosity and breed for many years already, it shows no signs of slowing down and remains smack dab in the middle of its plateau of maturity, offering up a complex and very classic nose of cherries, a touch of juniper berry, cigar wrapper, a fine signature of soil, summer truffles and a topnote of n...

Wine Advocate: "This is a very attractive Leoville-Barton that seems to be developing at a more accelerated pace than I had initially expected. A lovely, rather full, big bouquet of smoky, berryish, ripe fruit is first class. On the palate, the wine shows a good cedary, spicy, deep fruity constitution, moderate tannins, and a long finish. Bid on this bottle of 1978 Louis Martini Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. The story of Louis Martini is a key chapter in Napa's winemaking history. Genovese immigrant Louis Martini established his first business in 1922, smack in the middle of Prohibition (in force in the US from 1919 until 1933). He was therefore limited to making "sacramental and medicinal" wines at first. With the end of prohibition, Martini became one the first winemakers in California to produce vintage varietal table wines in quantity, and at reasonable prices. His son's 1968/70 Merlot was the first varietal Merlot made in the US. Sourced from prime vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, including Monte Rosso in the mountains above Sonoma Valley and La Loma in the cool Carneros district south of Napa, and made with care and expertise, Louis Martini wines have aged exceptionally well. With their hallmark of impeccable balance, older Louis Martini Cabs never cease to amaze.
