2010 Haut-Bergey, Pessac-Léognan
Top Pick!
92-93 points James Suckling: "This is a wine that shows lots of chocolate, tobacco and currants. Full body, with velvety tannins and a long finish. All there." (04/2011) 93 points Wine Advocate: "The Haut-Bergey 2010 has a very concentrated bouquet with dense blackberry, briary, crushed stone and tobacco on the nose that unfolds in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins on the entry. There is a lot of extraction here, but it is in tune with the acidity and the structured finish has plenty of vibrant red fruit and energy to see it thr...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This rich wine is powered by tannins and generous blackberry fruits. It is currently dry, with a firm core. But the wine has weight and will develop well. (RV)" (04/2021) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Dark cherry and red currant fruit melds nicely with notes of red tea and warm earth. Light alder thread stitches up the solid, juicy finish. (JM)" (03/2021)

100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Absolutely pure gold and reminding me of the 2009 (or is it the 2010?), the 2020 Château Smith Haut Lafitte sports a dense purple hue to go with incredible aromatics of blackberries, blueberries, scorched earth, wood smoke, and acacia flowers. One of the most concentrated, rich, and sexy wines in the vintage, this massive and extraordinarily opulent 2020 shows the vintage's pure, elegant profile yet backs it up with sensational levels of fruit and texture. Based on 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Fran...

2007 Haut Bergey, Pessac-Léognan
Top Pick!
93 points Wine Enthusiast: "A truly grassy aroma leads to a fresh, herbaceous and crisp wine. To top its crispness, it also has some weight, wood flavors and a creamy core with a white pear texture. It could benefit from aging, at least three years, to bring out the inherent richness of the wine. *Wine Enthusiast Best of 2009* (RV)" (07/2009) 90 points Int'l Wine Cellar: "Wild if subdued aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate, licorice, game and leather. Juicy and intense but a bit youthfully bound-up, with fresh acidity perking up the concentrated, ch...

94 points James Suckling: "Sliced lemons and pear drops with some hints of cream. Limes. Full-bodied with a creamy and delicious palate of dried fruits and hints of nougat. Chewy and phenolic. Drink or hold." (03/2023) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Shows nice brightness, with fleur de sel notes out front that give this zing from the get-go, followed by pink grapefruit oil, gooseberry and bitter almond hints. The fleur de sel takes an encore on the finish for zip. Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. (JM)" (03/2023) 92 points Decanter: "Refreshing citrus and st...

94 points Decanter: "Smells rich with perfumed blackcurrants. Clean and crisp on the palate, a smooth and silky texture but with crunchy and bright, almost sharp fruit - dark cherries, plums and figs edged with a chalky, minerality. Clearly charming, this is succulent, supple and so easy to like with excellent drinkability. Refreshing and totally moreish. (GH)" (01/2023) 94 points Wine Advocate: "Bottled after 24 months' élevage, much of which took place in large foudres, the 2020 Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion offers up aromas of dark berries, plums and s...

2014 l'Esprit de Chevalier Rouge, Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival, Elsewhere $38) (Pre-Arrival, Elsewhere $38)
Top Pick!
The second wine of Domaine de Chevalier, who excelled in the 2014 vintage with an over-delivering grand vin. A great under-the-radar value from a sleeper vintage.

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Moving to the red, the 2019 Domaine De La Solitude (Pessac-Léognan) reveals a ruby/plum color as well as textbook Graves notes of red and black cherries, damp earth, chocolate, and smoked tobacco. It's rich, medium to full-bodied, has ripe, supple, yet building tannins, and a great finish. It's beautifully done, and while I'd happily drink a bottle today, it will keep for upwards of two decades." (04/2022) 92 points James Suckling: "Aromas of ripe blackcurrants, blackberries, dark chocolate, licorice and smoke. Polished and refi...

Château L’Avocat is from the small commune of Cérons, which is located just north of Barsac and Sauternes in the southern Graves appellation. I met Nicola Allison in Napa Valley at a small conference of Women from Bordeaux and Napa Valley. She followed my advice by sending her wines to our hotel in April to be tasted, and Clyde and I liked them. I followed up by visiting the estate almost eight weeks later and was given a tour of their gravelly vineyards by her husband Sean, who manages the vines.
Price: $14.99

From a small family winery in the heart of Graves, this is a mineral-driven and vivacious white wine ideal for drinking early and often. Inspired by the gravelly and historic terroir of Graves, Henri and Françoise Leveque established Altus de Chantegrive in 1966 and have been handcrafting excellent Bordeaux ever since.

96 points Decanter: "Somewhat like the white of the same vintage, this is a taut wine, but time in glass yields impressive, cool, blueberry fruit that tastes more youthful than its age. The Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the palate with vivid blackcurrant, graphite and tannic power. Give it another decade and it will gain in complexity and interest. (PK)" (05/2023) 96 points James Suckling: "Dark fruits such as raspberries and blueberries with subtle perfume on the nose. Full body, with super well-integrated tannins and a fresh and clean finish. 100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A tour de force from Pessac-Leognan, the 2010 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte matches the 2009 in terms of quality but possesses a more dense, powerful, compact style. Absolutely heavenly aromatics of blackcurrants, cassis, smoked tobacco, scorched earth, and truffle all define the aromatics, and it takes air to show at its best today. With full-bodied richness, massive concentration, and building tannins, it's flawless balanced, has an insane level of purity, and incredible length on the finish. This brilliant, brilliant Graves will ...

94 points Wine Advocate: "Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Pape Clément has an intense bouquet that is very well defined, adorned with cassis, blueberry and subtle iodine scents that all gain momentum in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very well-judged acidity, the new oak neatly enmeshed and blessed with a precise, harmonious finish that lingers. This is a wonderful Pape Clément... 2005 Haut-Bergey, Pessac-Léognan
Top Pick!
91 points Int'l Wine Cellar: "Deep medium ruby. Blackberry, violet and a hint of dark chocolate on the nose. Impressively dense and primary, with flavors of blackberry and smoked meat complicated by a suggestion of bonfire. Chewy, dry and classic wine, finishing with substantial building tannins." (05/2007) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Aromas of mineral, blackberry and licorice lead to a full body, with lots of racy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Full-bodied, the voluptuous fruit has a firm foundation of super ripe, grainy tannins and bags of freshness supporting layer upon layer of black fruit, exotic spices and earth-laced flavors, finishing very long. It's full-bodied, perfectly balanced, has flawless tannins, and a rare mix of power, elegance, and purity. It blossoms with air, and while certainly mature, it has another 2-3 decades of overall longevity ahead of it." (10/2023) 98 ...

90-92 points from Parker… ‘Christine (a dead-ringer for a young Michelle Phillips) and Philippe Gervoson have greatly increased the quality of the wine from this splendidly situated estate in Pessac-Leognan. Improvements began in 1996, and the estate has hit peaks in both 1998 and 2000, although 1999 and 1997 are also fine wines. The 200 Larrivet-Haut-Brion, a blend of equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (Michel Rolland is the consulting oenologist), is an impressive sleeper of the vintage. A dense opaque purple color is followed by aromas of mi...

92-94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Barrel sample. There's great fruit here, lovely ripe dark plums and black cherry flavors pushing through the hugely sweet tannins. It's very opulent, a great full-fruited wine. (RV)" (06/2006) 92 points Wine & Spirits: "A gravel wash of tannin creates the structural base for this wine, spreading red currant and licorice root flavors through a long finish. The fruit is bold and supple, the mineral flavor providing tension that will sustain the wine as it ages over the next decade. For braised lamb." (10/2008) 90 points W...

The palate is mind-blowing, with a cashmere texture that unravels on the palate and continues on for minutes. It’s full of superbly complex, ethereal character and mouth-feel, One of the wines of the vintage. As glorious as it may be to taste now, this is one for your deep cellar. Try in 2029." 2014 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Pessac-Léognan (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
96 points Vinous: "I was deeply impressed with these wines from Domaine de Chevalier. The red has a slight upper hand in 2014, but both wines are distinctive and full of character. Olivier Bernard owns one of the crown jewels of Bordeaux, as these wines clearly make evident. The 2014 Domaine de Chevalier is a total knockout. Precise, brilliant and finely sculpted, the 2014 possesses superb intensity. Freshly cut flowers, mint and sweet red berries, along with finessed but persistent tannins, give the wine its regal personality. The 2014 needs a number of...

100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I obviously underrated the 2016 Château Haut-Bailly on release, and it easily tops out my scale. A hypothetical blend of the 2009 and 2010, it has the opulence and sexiness of a ripe, sunny vintage (à la 2009) paired with incredible purity, concentration, structure, and elegance (à la 2010). Incredible aromatics of cassis, liquid violets, cedar pencil, flowers, and minerals give way to a full-bodied, multi-dimensional, layered Haut-Bailly offering ultra-fine tannins, flawless overall balance, nothing out of place, and the class t...

(04/2011) 93 points Decanter: "Powerful and intense, with deep dark chocolate, black cherry and blackcurrant ... black everything. It has more depth of flavor than the 2011 vintage, although both are exceptional wines with lots to offer. Very tannic, this is austere but doesn't show any bitterness. 65% of production was used in the grand vin, matured in 33% new oak. (JA)" (07/2018) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Dense, wine...

Today it comes across as a bit light, especially on the mid-palate. *Editors' Choice* (RV)" (07/2022) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Very focused, with a streamlined set of lemon peel, fleur de sel and verbena notes that are long and finely tuned through the finish. It is uncharacteristically shy to begin, needing considerable coaxing to unlock notes of blackcurrant cordial, black cherries, and wild blueberries, plus opulent wafts of rose oil, Chinese five spice, dried lavender, and licorice. 95 points Wine Advocate: "An absolutely spectacular effort, the 2009 is one of the all-time great La Gaffelieres produced. One would have to go back to the 2005, 1947 or 1961 to find this level of quality from this ancient, historic vineyard planted adjacent to the walls of St.-Emilion, on the Cote Pavie. Dating back to the 1400s, this estate has been owned for over three centuries by the Malet-Roquefort family. This is extremely aromatic and flavourful with a persistence that lasts the whole way through. I also like the really soft honeyed lemon touch that runs underneath the more overt acidity.
