James Suckling: "Lots of ripe red-cherry and berry character, but also bright acidity that helps keep this rather sleek, in spite of the generous body. Slightly drying and tart finish. A blend based on 60 per cent Merlot." (02/2019) K&L Notes: Lateral is formally part of Kathryn Kennedy Winery. Kathryn Kennedy (July 28, 1927 – August 23, 2009) was a California wine grower, establishing her vineyard during the growth phase in the California wine history known as "The Wine Boom of the early 1970s". While not the first woman winemaker, Kennedy was one of ...

An old favorite of the late Joe Heitz, the Grignolino is consistently a delightful, food-friendly style, with slightly spicy wild strawberry fruit aromas and flavors and a juicy palate. It's so light in color it drinks like a rosé, but has a bit more structure so that it stands up to heartier foods. Served with a slight chill, this is an excellent choice for barbecue fare or a rustic picnic with cured meats and cheeses.

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Powerfully built and lush on the palate, this blends a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller amounts of Petit Verdot, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Tempranillo and Merlot. The winemaking skill shows, revealing a brawny, fruit-forward expression of brambly berry, dark spice, leather and clove. (VB)" (12/2020)

99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Another awesome blend by Russell, the 2018 Proprietary Red Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard is 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot, and it’s one of the more overtly sexy, opulent wines in the lineup. Offering a crazy perfume of lifted red and blue fruits, spring flowers, and incense, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a supple, seamless, mouth-filling texture, sweet tannins, and a blockbuster of a finish." (01/2021) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Sugarloaf is a relatively new, cooler site in south Napa, above a qu...

2018 Chappellet "Cultivation" Napa Valley Red Blend
New!
When Donn and Molly Chappellet founded Chappellet in 1967 their goal was to create world-class wines that mirrored the great First Growths of Bordeaux. From their first vintage, Chappellet accomplished just that; the wines from their family's Pritchard Hill estate vineyards have received high praise from critics and been coveted by collectors around the world for decades. "Cultivation" is a blend of the other red grapes found in Napa Valley and is 55% Zinfandel, 24% Malbec, and 21% Petite Sirah. Winemaker's tasting note: "The wine begins with ripe and sp...

Michael Cruse followed up his Champagne-inspired sparkling wine project, Ultramarine, established in 2008 with the creation of Cruse Wine Co. in 2013. Cruse Wine Co. was an opportunity for Michael to showcase fruit driven and satisfying wines that were fresh and pleasurable, but still remained serious at the same time. The roots of the North Coast run deep with Michael, so he chose to focus on sites within Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Contra Costa Counties to create these special wines. The one thing he didn’t want to do was to create another Pinot Noir ...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It opens with classic scents of chocolate-covered cherries, cedar, bay leaves and tobacco with a very classy frame of sweet spices. In the mouth, it's medium-bodied and plushly fruited with a fine grain and great freshness, finishing long. (EB)" (07/2020) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "The producer pulls from Napa Valley, High Valley, Alexander Valley and the Russian River Valley to combine 44% Cabernet Sauvignon with 20% Merlot, 14% Malbec, 12% Petit Verdot, 8% Syrah and 2% Cabernet Franc. The result is an outsta...

Lagier Meredith is a longtime staff favorite here at K&L. This tiny 4.5 acre property on Mt. Veeder produces distinctive, singular wines with powerful structure and authentic mountain terroir. Winery Notes: "Although it conveys its family ties to Syrah, our Mondeuse usually has a more floral aroma than our Syrah, and that's especially true with this vintage. Rose petals big time! Deeply-colored and full-bodied, as always. No new oak - 22 months in neutral French oak barrels. Unfined and unfiltered. 78 cases made."

91 points Vinous: "The 2018 Oakville Farmhouse Heritage Wine is quite delicate and refined in this vintage. Cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, dried flowers, mint and sweet red cherry are all nicely lifted. This field blend site will shock readers visiting Napa Valley, but the truth is that most sites in Napa once looked like this. (AG)" (04/2020)

Decanter: "An interesting blend of 50% Petite Sirah, 40% Merlot, and 10% Zinfandel, the deep purple/ruby-hued 2018 Red Blend Chaos Theory offers a darker, more meaty, earthy style as well as lots of plum and blackberry fruit, notes of spice, dried flowers, and brambly herbs, medium to full-bodied richness, and a solid, lengthy finish. It’s another pleasure-bent wine from this estate with lots to love. " (01/2021)

94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good full medium ruby. Wild aromas of black raspberry, game, smoke and gravel. Lush and sweet, with the gamey quality joined by chocolate and roasted herbs on the very ripe palate. Finishes with substantial fine-grained tannins. Big and rich but fresh: winemaker Andy Erickson told me he uses the Merlot "to tame and freshen the Syrah, and to lower the wine's pH." (ST)" (06/2009) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The blend of 55-60% Syrah and the rest Merlot is called Variation One (450-500 c...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2018 Alec's Blend is a step up, offering a beautiful nose of crème de cassis, scorched earth, chocolate, and charred meat. It's rich, full-bodied, and concentrated, yet still shows restraint and purity, with terrific tannins. I'd be thrilled to drink a bottle. The blend is 57% Syrah, 28% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc." (01/2021) 93 points Wine Spectator: "A compelling red that's harmonious and refined, with rich black raspberry, grilled herb and cracked pepper flavors that dance on the supple fi...
