This year has been really difficult for Italian producers, restaurants, where most wine is sold in Italy have been closed or partially open. So, for producers, the local market has dried up. I know a producer whose winery was still full of wine but he needed the tank space for the new vintage. He decided (I was very skeptical, by the way) to blend all of his white wines together and sell it all at a tremendous loss (the whites normally sell in the $25-$30 range) just to empty his cellar. I should not have been so skeptical. The wine is predominantly Pino...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Made predominantly from Carricante with a drop of Catarratto, this smooth, stunning white offers delicate, enticing scents of Spanish broom, chamomile, ripe white-stone fruit and a whiff of smoke. Savory and loaded with elegance, the medium-bodied, focused palate features juicy Meyer lemon, ripe Bartlett pear, golden apple and tangy, saline mineral notes. Bright acidity lends tension and balance. Drink through 2025. KERIN O’KEEFE" (12/2020)

This wine goes through a short maceration on the skins and then 6 months in stainless steel with frequent batonage. Grown on iron rich limestone soil where you really have to like stones because the vineyards are full of them! This is the western bank of the Isonzo River not far from the beautiful city of Gradisca, which is right on the Slovenian border.

Gelmino and Cristina Dal Bosco started their winery in 2002 when the family decided to stop selling their grapes to the local co-op and make wine themselves. The winery and vineyards are located in the town of Brognoligo in the heart of the Soave Classico production area that is limited only to the communes of Soave and Monteforte d’Alpone in the province of Verona. The Montesei bottling is 100% Garganega which is harvested by hand and vinified in stainless steel. The color of the wine is a yellow straw, and the profile bright and floral with mineral det...

93 points James Suckling: "I like the minerality and spiciness of this blend of pinot bianco, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc with a medium to full body, creamy texture and lots of flavor at the finish. Some flint in the aftertaste. It’s compact and controlled." (08/2020) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The lovely 2019 Alto Adige Terlaner Cuvée is fresh and buoyant with citrusy notes that are followed by wild sage, crushed stone, spicy saffron, toasted pine nut, Golden Delicious apple and crispy pear. The cuvée is a blend of 60% Pinot Bianco, ...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Aromas of honeysuckle and ripe apricot form the nose. On the round, enveloping palate, tangy acidity accompanies ripe yellow peach, dried pineapple and candied lemon drop before finishing on an almond note. *Editors' Choice* (KO)" (08/2020)

Ian D'Agata reports: "A small family run operation situated in Brognoligo, in the heart of the Soave Classico production zone and founded only in 2002, Le Battistelle is making some of Soave’s more interesting white wines lately. Owners Gelmino and Cristina Dal Bosco farm nine hectares subdivided in many plots; it is the single largest section of vines located on the monte delle Battistelle in the Castellaro cru that gives the estate its name. The estate’s vineyards are planted on very steep slopes on highly volcanic soils and the wines, though not the l...

The 18 hectares of vines on the Blason estate in Isonzo grow in alluvial limestone soil that is also high in iron content, hence its predominantly reddish color. The growing region is at the confluence of two climate systems, that of the foothills of the Julian Alps and the nearby Adriatic Sea. This allows for white wines of fully developed flavors and aromas, but which also retain a striking mineral edge. This Pinot Grigio is vinified with some skin contact, all in stainless steel.

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is an exciting new addition to the Vietti portfolio. The 2018 Colli Tortonesi Timorasso Derthona is a compact, medium-bodied wine that offers a large span of neutral aromas ranging from melon and quince to Golden Delicious apple. What sets the wine apart is its silky texture and creamy fruit weight. I happily drank my sample with some take-out spring rolls in spicy sauce. We will surely see more prominent winemakers in Lange who decide to dabble in Timorasso in the upcoming years. This native grape shows pro...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Aromas of Alpine herb, white spring flower and ripe orchard fruit mingle together in the glass. Tangy and rounded, the savory palate boasts intense flavor and finesse, doling out ripe yellow pear, white peach and a hint of green melon alongside fresh acidity. (KO)" (10/2020) 91 points James Suckling: "A lovely, creamy white with pineapple and mango character, as well as crushed-stone undertones. It’s medium-bodied, fruity and delicious. Monica Larner writes: "This winery was founded in the 1960s by a dentist named Piero Mancini who had a deep passion for wine. The estate grew over the next two decades to its current 70-hectare size. It has vineyards that look towards the Olbia Gulf in the Gallura district in northern Sardinia. Today, the winery is run by Piero's wife Marisa and their children Laura, Antonio and Alessandro."

A flagship Etna Bianco bottling, Monica Larner writes of Benanti for Wine Advocate: "Giuseppe Benanti's sons Antonio and Salvino have increasingly taken on managerial roles at the family winery and have done so with a powerful sense of charge and purpose. The generational shift at Benanti is impressive and I was very happy to visit with both father and sons during my last trip to Etna. They have streamlined production, removing some lesser-performing wines. At the same time, they restructured their vineyard holdings, selling off property and buying two h...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Tradition is another fantastic value wine that matches the simple versatility of the grape with the cool and crisp personality of the Italian Dolomites. The wine pours from the bottle with pretty luminosity, and the bouquet presents classic aromas of pear, melon, apple and almond. There's a fun touch of saffron, dried mint and crushed oyster shell that adds an extra layer of dimension and depth. (ML)" (09/2020)

91 points James Suckling: "Very fragrant pinot grigio with sliced cooked-pear and some pear-blossom aromas. Pear Williams. It’s full-bodied, fruity and delicious. A little obvious, but very attractive all the same." (08/2020) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Peter Zemmer 2019 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio offers a light and buoyant quality with extra lift from citrus, white peach, grapefruit and crushed mineral. Closed in a screw cap bottle, this is a pretty and modestly fragrant wine that refreshes the palate, thanks to its acidity and that simple presen...

Monica Larner reports: "Paolo Caciorgna is originally from the Marche region in Central Italy and he enjoyed a long winemaking career in Tuscany. He came to Etna in the early 2000's and bought his first half hectare of vineyard in the Contrada Santo Spirito in 2007. His holdings soon grew to two hectares of land."

2017 Planeta "Eruzione 1614" Carricante

93 points James Suckling: "Intense aromas of sliced lemons, spices and minerals. Full body. Dense palate. Focused and poised. Solid balance and energy. Drink now." (11/2017) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is a blend of 90% Carricante that has been enhanced with 10% Riesling. It is amazing how much range, dimension, depth and overall definition that small percentage of Riesling brings to the table. These two grapes find remarkable harmony in the 2017 Sicilia Carricante Eruzione 1614. The clarity and precise nature of those linear and alm...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Alto Adige Weissburgunder Pinot Bianco Karneid is beautifully light and fragrant with moderate overall aromatic intensity. The right accents are delivered in the right doses. The bouquet shows bright flashes of citrus, white peach and, of course, those unmistakable mineral tones that remind you of the white dolomitic rocks of this mountainous area. One-third of the wine is aged in barrique and tonneaux. (ML) 91+" (09/2019)

92 points Wine Spectator: "Dry and minerally, this light- to medium-bodied white is sleek and tightly-knit, with a zesty profile of crunchy white peach and passion fruit flavors and accents of fresh tarragon, Meyer lemon peel and ground white pepper. Lip-smacking acidity drives the racy finish as it echoes the minerally stone and saline notes. (AN, Web-2019)" 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Alto Adige Terlano Sauvignon Winkl opens to a luminous and reflective appearance. Varietal aromas of tangerine and citrus fruit are there, but the...

92 points James Suckling: "Pineapple, mango and lemon undertones on the nose follow through to a full body, round, creamy texture and a citrusy aftertaste. A rich, phenolic white." (11/2019) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Showing the fiber and density that I attribute to the hot and dry vintage, the 2017 Etna Bianco Arcurìa delivers more volume and texture than previous editions. The fruit tastes more concentrated with honey, Sicilian lemon blossom and toasted almond. This beautiful expression of Carricante is also very slightly evolved, rev...

Weissburgunder is Pinot Bianco is Pinot Blanc — same grape, grown in the spectacular alpine setting of Alto Adige. From the importer: "The winery Gump (Gumphof) is nestled in the steep slopes at the entry of the Isarco Valley and its vineyards stretch from an altitude of 350 to 550 metres (1,150-1,800 feet) above sea level. The five hectare (ten acres) are planted with Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, Schiava and Pinot Noir wines. At an age of 28, Markus Prackwieser started a quiet transformation and has produced his own wine since. His wines hav...

Like so many producers in Italy's northern most regions, the Keber family's roots are not exactly (or entirely) Italian. This part of the wine world is a crossroads of sorts, where ethnic histories and languages spoken (Slovenian, Italian, German, etc.) vary considerably often between neighboring households. The Keber family migrated to Collio 350 years ago from Austria, and they've been making wine here ever since. In fact, if you ask Edi where his family is from, he'll simply say "here." The Collio region is difficult to pin down due to the sheer numbe...

97 points James Suckling: "A full-bodied white with complex aromas of hawthorn, ripe peach, apricot, mango, lime, flint, toast and some smoke. Ermanno Costa’s grandfather, Pietro, worked these vineyards as a sharecropper (mezzadria) in the 1950’s. Twenty eight years later his son purchased the property seeking to make wines with their family’s name on the bottle. Their first vintage was 1981. Today the fourth generation carries on the family business and passion in Ermanno’s children, Simone, Fabrizia and Giorgia. They tend to 17 acres in the center of an amphitheater of vineyards facing south on hills surrounding the winery and family home, 820 feet above sea level, located in Roero, north of ...

Monica Larner writes: "Dario Raccaro is a boutique producer with a pure and genuine winemaking approach. He prefers stainless steel and cold stabilization for the whites. He has five hectares of vine, including the Vigna del Rolat that is often a source of Friulano rootstock. The quality of the fruit from this vineyard is immediately recognizable."
