This espadin (A. Angustifolia) mezcal is the perfect pick for anyone starting to explore the world of quality mezcal or as a relatively inexpensive option for mezcal-based cocktails. It's very approachable and laden with sweet agave fruit. The smoke component is decidedly there, but not very intense, as one would expect with a well-made mezcal. A rich texture makes this a delightful sipper or stout component in a mezcal variant of the Last Word. Gold medal winner in Tequila Aficionado's 2021 Brands of Promise.

The artisanl mezcal distilled by Fernando Santibanez in Matatlan. Made from 100% Espadin, the agave is crushed and roasted in the traditional method using mesquite and ocote wood. Natural fermentation takes place in pine vats before double distillation in very old copper pots. This is awesome authentic mezcal, selling for well below the market rate. A great value and the perfect bottle to cut your teeth on or play with cocktails.

We've seen time and again that no palenque succeeds without the contribution of strong women, and YOLA provides a place where the women of Oaxaca can have steady work. Rey Campero Espadin uses wild agave Espadin that is fermented in open air with wild yeasts. In true Rey Campero fashion, only the highest quality agave are used in production and the difference between wild agave Espadin instead of the more commonly used farmed Espadin makes a world of difference in this Mezcal. The Rey Campero Espadin is also aged before bottling, which adds complexity and depth. Considering the quality the pricing is absolutely astounding from this legendary distillery in Candelaria Yegole.

This exceptional Mezcal from the far flung Yaupetec sub-region of southwestern Oaxaca has one of the Mezcal world's most endearing stories. The amazing story begins with one man named Daniel Arellano Martinez. He was born and raised in San Bartolo and lived and breathed the Oaxacan Mezcal culture until he moved to New York City as a young man. Before the world had gone crazy for Mezcal, Daniel began working in restaurants as a server. It wasn't until one fateful night when a customer had questions about Mezcal that Danny made his great prowess and knowl...

Madre Mezcal hails from the tiny village of San Dionisio Ocotepec. In between Chichicapam and Matatlan, the village is in the heart of Mezcal country. The Garcia Morales family has been growing agave for generations here and they make one of the most balanced and inviting mezcals we've ever come across. A blend of estate grown Espadin and wild harvest Cuishe, the agave is cooked for days over pine. Mezcal Legendario Domingo was founded in 2012 by Julian Saenger. Born and raised in Mexico, Julian has always had tremendous love and respect for the art of mezcal production, often finding ways to delve into production, marketing, brand launches and general support of the category throughout Mexico. When he finally found the opportunity to create a brand of his own through partnership with the Velasco family, he chose to center the brand design around a recurring feeling he experienced through his journey in mezcal: celebration. 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "The scent is rich and almost chicken-soup savory, while the rounded palate shows subtle honey-like sweetness at first, drying midpalate to leaner notes of menthol, rosemary and rubber. The long, lip-smacking finish brings back honey, this time mingled with light smoke and cayenne sparks. (KN)" (09/2017)

From Santa Catarinas de Minas, Oaxaca this special-batch, Minero-style mezcal was previously unavailable in the US. Agaves are cooked in soil pits with guahulchile and eucalyptus, then dry-fermented for 14 days. When mold has developed, they are broken down by hand with machetes, rehydrated, and then hand-crushed with mazos (wooden mallets). After undergoing second and third fermentations, the juice is distilled two times in clay pots, then rested for three years. What results is a pleasantly smooth mezcal with subtle mineral notes and character that can...

From Mezcal Reviews: "Before starting Lalocura in 2014, Eduardo "Lalo" Ángeles spent years working as the fourth generation master mezcalero of his family’s brand Real Minero, where he combined a lifetime of working under his father, the late, great Don Lorenzo with a collegiate degree in agricultural engineering. Many Real Minero bottles from several years ago actually have Eduardo listed alongside his father as the master distiller. Lalocura's clay pot distilled mezcals have built a steady cult following over the last few years. People from around the ...

This exquisite mezcal is emblematic of this special region in the Sierre Del Sud. Roasted underground, crushed by hand and double distilled on small copper pots, the brand is committed to preserving the maguey and using low intervention methods to cultivate, while re-seeding in the wild. This fire cracker of an espadin at a cool 101 proof, is one of the finest examples of the now ubiquitous agave. Bold and briming with citrus fruit ...

Originating from the town of Candelaria Yegolé in the Zoquitlan region of Oaxaca, this is one of the rarer Silvestre agaves and the first Jabali we ever stocked at K&L. The flavor of the Agave recalls an ultra pungent Tobala with tons of tropical fruit and citrus moving toward the floral and perfume-y flavors. That said there's also plenty earthy gravel and white pepper. Richly textured and ultra dense, the smoke is the perfect frame to the wild flavors of this special plant. Mineral and spice build on the finish leaving you with a long lingering finish.

Wine Enthusiast: "Clear color and vegetal aromas of green pepper, green jalapeno, along with black pepper and a hint of smoke and dried oregano. A sweet, fruity flavor at first quickly unfolds to lots of smoke and jalapeno pepper, and a spicy, bitingly alcoholic finish. A bracing backbone for mixed drinks. The latest addition to our selection of craft mezcals hails from the heart the Mexican highlands in Durango. Made from 10- to 13-year-old piñas of agave cenizo, Burrito Fiestero is entirely handcrafted (with the help of some small but hardy donkeys or "burritos"). Notes from the distiller: "Burrito Fiestero is made out of agave cenizo, endemic to the state of Durango. This maguey takes from 10 -13 years to mature. Once naked from its spikes, it is carried and trasported by donkey down the mountain to begin with the elaboration process. It is here where o...

This unusual experimental expression of the traditional Oaxacan Pechuga comes from Mezcalero Fernando Santibanz. Marrying two traditions into a unique example of this celebratory spirit, the Xicaru Pechuga Mole is excatly that. First traditional Mole is hand ground using peppers, spices and of course chocolate. The finished mole is added to the copper potstills with the ordinario (first run of distillation) and seven whole chickens. Unlike most pechuga, the meat is not suspended in the still and while the chickens give an unquestionable meatiness, it is ...

This producer and his sons make a very special mezcal called Pechuga that is many a bartender's darling due to its distinctively smoky-spicy aromas and flavors. Spirits critics have described it as "ouzo-like" for its intense petrol and anise-driven profile. It is triple-distilled and limited in production due to the special seasonal ingredients it requires—wild mountain apples and plums—which are part of a special combination of fruits and rice added to the distillate for the third distillation, which takes place over the period of 24 hours and requires...

*96 points, Ultimate Spirits Challenge Top 100 of 2020* Mezcal Vago is the business creation of Judah Kuper in conjunction with his in-laws in Oaxaca - a family of distillers that have been making mezcal for generations. Vago marks the first time their products have been available commercially, having previously been consumed solely by friends and family. The Elote is the classic Espadin expression from Judah's father-in-law Aquilino García López macerated with toasted Mexican corn. Like other producers use Pechuga (chicken breast) to add flavor, the toa...

Los Vecinos Del Campo is the new mezcal project from Sazerac and Carmen Villareal of Casa San Matias. As with any upstart mezcal brand our first instinct is to tread with caution. There's alot of opportunity to get things wrong when bringing a new mezcal to market, but we're extremely happy to note that our friends from New Orleans avoided all of them. Instead, we get an incredible affordable authentic artesenal mezcal from the village of San Miguel Ejutla in Oaxaca's central valley. Carmen's connections to the area go way back and she was able to identi...
