2019 Domaine Petroni Corse Rouge
Top Pick!
91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Wonderful raspberry and ripe strawberry fruits as well as spice, flowers, and a beautiful chalky minerality all emerge from the 2019 Corse, a medium-bodied, fresh, seamless, impeccably balanced red from Corsica. It has plenty of classic Mediterranean spice and garrigue nuances, yet it holds onto a wonderful sense of freshness, focus, and elegance, and is just a joy to drink. It should shine for at least 5-7 years, and I suspect it will be a smoking value." (08/2021) K&L Notes: Domaine Petroni is an estate on the eastern side of ...

In 1973, Daniel Dugois bought 2 hectares of vineyard and a house equipped with wine cellars in a village called Les Arsures, where he was born. He cultivated the vineyard and sold his production primarily to Henri Maire, one of the most prominent producers in Jura at that time. In 1982, Daniel made his first harvest in his own cellars and began to sell his wines to consumers. His first ever harvest earned him his first Gold Medal for his Chardonnay at the Jura Wine Contest. Daniel and his wife Monique have continued to work on the quality of their wines ...

Nicolas Idiart, winemaker and founder of Maison Idiart, grew up with a passion for wine, which he acquired from his father and grandfather. After graduating from winemaking school at Blanquefort in Bordeaux, Nicolas' enthusiasm for Loire wines brought him to work in Chinon, Touraine, and Muscadet, with stints further afield in Australia and New Zealand. Never quite sure where his niche was, he moved in to the sales side of the wine business, mainly in North America. After 7 long and ultimately unsatisfying years of sales, he decided to go back to winemak...

This is the Bordeaux-meets-Rhône blend you never knew you wanted. Jean-Louis Denois is an iconoclast, as independently-minded and attentive to the character of the terroir in which he cultivates his grapes as anyone we’ve encountered. This talented winemaker has an exceptional track record with K&L customers and staff alike. He creates consistently unique wines with brilliantly rendered fruit from a medley of grapes, and the 2017 Les Garrigues named for the uncultivated thyme and rosemary scrub that grows everywhere there-is an expressive blend of Syrah,...

About 10 miles south of Arles, in the regional park preserve of Camargues, lies the 15th century property, Mas de Valeriole. Encircled by the Grand Rhone, Petit Rhone and the Mediterranean, Camargue is famous for its wild horses, lakes, salt marshes and rice fields and is the largest river delta in Western Europe. The property was acquired by the Michel family in the late 1950s and is now run by Jean-Paul and Patrick Michel. Since 2006, the brothers have worked organically and are certified by Ecocert. Bouches-du-Rhone is the mouth of the Rhone, stra...

One of the most exciting projects in recent years is the négociant brand Les Athlètes du Vin—these French winemakers are all about value-driven, authentic expressions of the French terroir. Forming part of the Vini Be Good network across France, they work collectively to source and market their wines both domestically and abroad. The labels are the work of Michel Tolmer, the go-to artist for producers in the French natural wine movement for decades. 100% Grolleau from 60-year-old vines on slate soils. Hand harvested, carbonic macerated in stainless steel...

From the area south of Muscadet known as Fiefs Vendéens, this wine is a blend of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Negrette, and Gamay. Our French Regional wine buyer, Keith Mabry, says, "One of my go-to reds from the region, and it’s not just the adorable little owl on the label that makes it special for me. With its great acidity and texture and floral aromas, this is the perfect red to put a little chill on and enjoy with all kinds of foods!"

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Mainly Tannat with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine comes from the home estate of Madiran leader Alain Brumont. The wine balances bold tannins from all three grapes with the power of black fruits, acidity and density. It needs to age and will be ready from 2022. (RV)" (04/2020) K&L Notes: Alain Brumont is one of the stars of Madiran. In 1979 he inherited his father's estate, Château Bouscassé. With little experience in the wine industry, he quickly educated himself and began transforming the landscape of Madi...

Domaine des Huards was founded in 1846 and is now on its 7th generation. Since 1998 they have been certified biodynamic by Biodyvin. The "Envol" is the consummate Cheverny rouge blend made up of 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Gamay. The Pinot is grown on their clay-limestone soils and the Gamay favors the siliceous-clay soils. All grapes are fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The Envol sees no wood and is a pure expression of these soils and the region. *Biodynamic*

Based in the Languedoc AOP of Picpoul de Pinet, Michel and Christelle Moret work their little Grangette farm sustainably. They are the only estate producer to bottle Picpoul in red, white and rose. This Piquepoul Noir (also spelled Picpoul Noir) is a delightfully fruity red that takes an easy chill. It has an exuberent light-to-medium bodied palate with notes of red plum, strawberry and fresh herbs. The perfect warm weather red? Try it with some heartier grilled fish dishes and you'll find out!
