2019 Aurore Dezat Sancerre
Top Pick!
Wine Enthusiast: "With a light, bright and fruity character, this wine has attractive citrus acidity that is filled out with green-apple flavors. (RV)" (12/2020) K&L Notes: The wines of Aurore Dezat are a regular feature in our wine club offerings, and her vibrant Sancerre is an easy favorite among K&L staff, as well. Aurore makes wine on her family estate in Sury-en-Vaux, which was established by her grandfather. Before Aurore took over the estate, most of the fruit was sold off through négociants. She has slowly phased out the négociant contracts. Th...

2019 Eric Cottat Sancerre
Top Pick!
We were first introduced to the wines of Eric Cottat a few years back when he was brought to our attention by one of our long-time friends and winemakers in Sancerre. Eric only produces a small amount of wines each vintage for family, friends, and close customers, and then sells the rest of his fruit off to other eager producers in the region. This Sancerre is always invigorating and fresh, with lemony citrus aromas and flavors accented by delicate white flowers. The palate is full and lively, with balanced acidity and minerality on the finish. Although ...

One of K&L's very finest buys from France. This is a reserve cuvée, made from Millet's chalkiest limestone soils. There is a long maceration at very low temperatures to extract as much flavor and character as possible. The resulting wine is intensely charged with stone fruit and minerality, with bright citrus notes. The wines of this family domaine have been a staple here at K&L since the 1994 vintage when Franck and Betty Millet drove a long way (to Beaune!) on Easter Sunday to meet Clyde and crew to present the wines. We love these wines for their fres...

The Millet Sancerre has been a favorite here at K&L for a long time. Grown in limestone-clay soil, the wine reflects the terroir wonderfully. The flavors are bright with lime, mineral, passion fruit, and that wonderful chalkiness one wants from a Sancerre. This wine over delivers and pairs beautifully with oily seafood dishes, and of course, your favorite cheeses.

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Fresh and tightly structured, this wine has intense, ripe fruitiness as well as more open whitefruit flavors. Its tight texture and tangy crispness need a few months to soften. (RV)" (12/2020) K&L Notes: Winemaker Anthony Girard grew up in his family's Sancerre winery, but spent a number of years learning about wine production all over the world before returning home to continue working with Sauvignon Blanc. While continuing to help with the namesake Girard label, Anthony wanted to create his own project on the side and even...

2019 Domaine Cherrier Père & Fils Sancerre
Top Pick!
Domaine Cherrier was founded in 1930. Since then four generations of the family have run the estate. The domaine has limestone and calcareous clay soils that wonderfully influence the character of the grapes grown there. The Sancerre is consistently delicious, with citrus, chalky minerality and light floral notes. Its dry finish complements seafood and cheese beautifully. K&L French Regional buyer Keith Mabry says: "The Cherrier to me is always one of the biggest crowd-pleasing Sancerres/Sauvignon Blancs from anywhere in the world."

2018 Aurore Dezat "Les Chasseignes" Sancerre
Top Pick!
92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Partially wood aged, this wine is perfumed, ripe with lime and spicy lychee flavors. Already balanced and poised, it needs a few more months to soften further into balance. (RV)" (12/2020) K&L Notes: A family domaine that has been run by third-generation winemaker Aurore Dezat since 2011. Dezat farms nine hectares of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir in the commune of Sury-en-Vaux on limestone, pebble, and flint soils.

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "This young, fruity wine comes from vines owned by the Pitault-Landry family. It has an edge of tannins and freshly spicy fruits. Smoky, perfumed and packed with berry flavors, the wine will develop further. Drink from 2022. (RV)" (07/2020) K&L Notes: A rich ruby red with notes of violets and red berry fruits, this Cabernet Franc is nicely layered on the palate with brightness running throughout and just a touch of smoke mixed in with some purple fruits. Soft waves of mineral with a nice soft tannin make this a true delight ...

2019 Domaine Tabordet "Le Champs des Vignes" Pouilly-Fumé
Top Pick!
Nestled in the village of Verdigny, Domain Tabordet is run by brothers Yvon and Pascal Tabordet, who took the reins back in 1981. When the two brothers first took over the estate it consisted of three hectares in Sancerre. By 1988 they had added another 4.5 hectares of Sancerre and also added 12 hectares in neighboring Pouilly-Fumé, just across the Loire River. Wine growing in Pouilly-Fumé dates back to the fifth century when the Romans dominated the area. In 1937, it became an official Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) of France. Wine called Pouilly...

Producer Christophe Hallereau wasn't interested in being in the wine business until he inherited his family vineyards. While maintaining his day job in agriculture, he became a weekend warrior winemaker maintaining the property and the cellar library. Years later and with 8 hectares in the village of Vallet, he now runs the local association of growers. All wines are fermented in concrete with native yeasts and minimal additions of SO2. Subsoils in the region are igneous with vineyards composed primarily of mica-schist. Vallet is a pending cru appellatio...

95 points Decanter: "Pure and elegant aromas of lemon, white flowers and grilled peaches. Mineral on the palate with vibrant acidity and juicy fruit. Burstingly complex finish. (DWWA)" (09/2020) K&L Notes: The Choblet family established their vineyards in 1945 in what would become the Muscadet Côtes de Grandlieu appellation. Now three generations deep, brothers Herve and Nicolas Choblet work together from vine to bottle to make some of the most interesting and dynamic Muscadets in the region. The vines are planted on a mix of mica-schist but mostly gra...

This Chardonnay is produced by the three brothers Couillaud at the Château de la Ragotière, a few minutes from the Atlantic near the mouth of the Loire River, where the maritime climate is ideal for producing whites that are refreshing and bright. The Couillauds age most of this wine on its lees until bottling to add weight and texture with around 10% being barrel-fermented in French oak for the faintest touch of toastiness. Saveur magazine wrote about a previous vintage: "This value-priced Chardonnay tastes crisp and bright. It comes from the western Lo...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2019 Sancerre opens with a clear and highly attractive ripe peach aroma with coolish flint stone notes. Full-bodied and intense, with lingering salinity and sustainable structure, this is an already accessible Sancerre with a long and grippy finish. Tasted in February 2021. (SR)" (03/2021) 92 points Vinous: "Vacheron's 2019 Sancerre Blanc is classy, polished and pedigreed through and through. A whole range of bright Sauvignon Blanc aromas and flavors race out of the glass. Citrus, sage, tomato leaf and whit...

The wines of this family domaine have been a staple here at K&L since the 1994 vintage when Franck and Betty Millet drove a long way (to Beaune!) on Easter Sunday to meet Clyde and crew to present their wines. We love these wines for their freshness, charm and affordability. The low-alcohol Millet Sancerre Rouge is 100% Pinot Noir, partially barrel aged, and absolutely delicious. Aromas of cherries and purple flowers give way to a vibrant, crunchy red-fruited palate with just a enough tannins to balance out the juicy fruit.

Like Sancerre but half the price! The Fournier family, with roots as deep as their vines in this region, seem to be related to just about everyone in some way. They've been farming and producing wines in Sancerre for generations. We are pleased to have been offered this wine, yet again, at such a great price. Soft, subtle mineral notes are wrapped up in aromatics of melon and citrus. Clean, bright and refreshing, this is a perfect little Sauvignon Blanc. Tropical fruit, citrus and spice aromas and flavors, with vibrant acidity and minerality. Perfect for...

Both Pineau d’Aunis and Patrice Colin hail from the Côteaux du Vendômois, an under-the-radar appellation north of Touraine and Vouvray that lies on a Loire River tributary called, confusingly enough, the Loir. The appellation was officially formed in 2001 but it’s been producing wine since the 11th century. Part of its mystique is that it’s small: there are only 13 private producers and one co-op in this appellation, and this perhaps explains why its hometown hero, Pineau d’Aunis, doesn’t make it Stateside all that often. Patrice is the eighth generati...

94 points Vinous: "The 2018 Sancerre Blanc Guigne-Chèvres is bright, steely and full of character. Lemon peel, white flowers, crushed rocks and white pepper give this taut, sculpted Sancerre so much character and nuance. The Guigne-Chèvres will appeal most to readers who enjoy nervy, racy whites. (AG)" (10/2020) K&L Notes: The Vacheron vineyards are all close to the village of Sancerre itself and have been in the family for 9 generations. Today, this domaine is run by two cousins, the Messieurs Vacheron. Both have sons studying viticulture to carry on ...

All the wines at this beautiful little organic domaine are made from 100% Chenin Blanc but vary in degrees of sweetness depending on where the grapes are harvested from. Planted in the sandy clay soils over tuffeau (that magical chalky soil of the Loire), these wines show the range of the quality that can be found in Vouvray for a mere pittance.

2018 Florian Mollet Pouilly-Fumé
Top Pick!
94 points James Suckling: "Wonderful aromas of dried flowers to the cooked apple and some lime. Green papaya too. Medium to full body. Fruity and minerally finish. Drink now." (07/2019) K&L Notes: After studying winemaking in Dijon and working abroad in South Africa and Australia, young vigneron Florian Mollet took over his family Domaine in 2000 with the idea of making it one of the great estates in Sancerre. He had a bit of a head start when you consider that Mollet controls the Clos du Roc de l’Abbaye’ vineyard, one of the great terroirs of Sancerre...

Wine Enthusiast: "This natural wine, bottled from the lees, is textured, with a yeasty character. Ripe apple and pear flavors are full bodied and lifted by just enough acidity. The wine's richness and concentration will allow it to age further, so drink from late 2019. (RV)" (10/2019) K&L Notes: The Bedouet family's history in the region dates back to the 1890s, when the estate was created by Henri Bedouet. His grandson, Michel, took possession and expanded the holdings when he assumed the reins in 1990. In 2010, he began the conversion to organic far...

2019 Domaine de la Taille Aux Loups "Clos Michet" Montlouis sur Loire
Top Pick!
96 points Decanter: "Clos Michet is the smaller of two adjacent clos that the Domaine de la Taille aux Loups owns in the commune of Saint Martin le Beau. The larger is the 12ha Clos Mosny, which is entirely enclosed by a wall. The Clos Michet has sandy soil, faces southwest and west and the vines are at least 50 years old. The age of the barrels used are a quarter new, quarter one year, quarter two year and a quarter three years. Tasted in early February Clos Michet was richer than Rémus with thrilling tension between the fruit and acidity with a very lo...

Typically when you think Sancerre, you think crisp and chalky white wine. But the region also produces phenomenal Pinot Noir. One of the aspects of Sancerre that makes for great Sauvignon Blanc is the limestone and flint soils, which lend depth of minerality and gorgeous aromatics. These same soil characteristics also make for incredible Pinot Noir with plenty of depth and personality. One of our best new-direct import producers in Sancerre, Aurore Dezat, makes just such a wine. If you love silky, round Pinot Noir with gorgeous dark cherry notes and laye...

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Impressively saturated ruby-red color. Complex aromas of black raspberry, kirsch, Valrhona chocolate, smoke and gunflint. Tactile and quite concentrated; really dense with extract. Ripe acidity gives the deep flavors lovely clarity. A real fruit essence: the wine somewhat chewy tannins and alcohol are hidden by fruit. (ST)" (12/1998) K&L Notes: Joël Taluau is a fabulous grower in St. Nicolas de Bourgueil known for making some of the purest expressions of Cabernet Franc in the Loire, unmarred by the...

Chateau de Miniere is making some outstanding Cabernet Franc in the Loire Valley but one of their truly standout wines is this sparkling red. A fulll skin contact red with bubbles in it. Chateau d’Epiré is an 11 hectare estate. This bottling is sourced from 30- 55-year- old vines in schist soils. From importer Kermit Lynch: "Despite the beauty and timelessness of the building structures, it is the vineyard for which the domaine is best known. The Savennières from Epiré is regarded as Grand Cru. The domaine works primarily three parcels: La Croix Picot, Le Parc, and Le Hu-Boyau. It is the latter that sits just above another famous vineyard, La Coulée de Serrant. The soils here are rich, and the microclimate is ideal. Southern and south-ea...

It has the essence of lemon and peach fruits, cut with acidity and spicy secondary flavors. The wine is impressively ripe and ready to drink. (RV)" (09/2018) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Almost velvety in texture, featuring notes of sweet corn and toasted coconut that frame the core of yellow apple and Mirabelle plum flavors. Asian spice accents emerge midpalate, with focused acidity penetrating and giving this life. (AZ)" (11/2019) ...

Wine Enthusiast: "This profound, off-dry sparkling pear cider from Normandy comes from biodynamically farmed, 300-year-old trees." (05/2014) K&L Notes: A sommelier by training, in 1992 Eric took over his family's estate and orchards. His goal was to revolutionize the cider industry and bring it into restaurants, high-end retail and export markets. A close friend of his, Didier Dagueneau, the icon wine-maker in Pouilly-sur-Loire encouraged him down the path of producing ciders from apples and pears that are like no others. Joël Taluau is a fabulous grower in St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, known for making some of the purest expressions of Cabernet Franc in the Loire. All his hand-harvested cuvées are based on vine age and soil composition, and the wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel with a light fining and no filtration before bottling. The Vieilles Vignes, from a single plot planted in 1934, has power, depth and grace; this, their flagship wine, will improve for the next 7-9 years but can be enjoyed now for those of you who like a mouthful of wine.

90 points Vinous: "Le Temps des Cerises (or “Cherry Time!” as Jérôme jokes) is Domaine de la Noblaie’s everyday Chinon and represents half of their Cabernet Franc production. Bright ruby. Classic fresh and savory Chinon nose, delivering lots of black pepper, tomato and olive. On the palate, thought, it’s plush and fruity, with fleshy plum and ripe cherry, balanced by chalk and more black pepper. Aged five months in stainless steel. When Jean Noel Millon took over winemaking and farming at his family's estate in 1998, he represented the seventh generation to do so. The 10-hectare farm is certified organic and Millon complements the soil with herbal teas and homemade composts to strengthen the vines' natural defenses. Winery tasting notes: "It is the emblematic wine of the estate with its aromatic expression of red fruit. The palate is crunchy and juicy with ripe, fresh fruit which gives it good drinkability." *organic*

Pascal Gitton is the current scion at the helm of Domaine Gitton. The estate began life as a 1.5-hectare parcel near Ménétréol-sous-Sancerre that his grandmother farmed in addition to running a bistro and épicerie. From these beginnings, the total of the family’s various holdings is now close to 33 hectares. They specialize in silex (flint) soils which make up about 50% of their total holdings. Les Fredins is all from said silex showing the vibrancy that soil imparts. Notes of citrus, gooseberry and crackling minerality define the rich palate.

This is 100% Chenin Blanc from hillside parcels ranging from 15-25 years old just outside the actual village of Vouvray. 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "South of the Loire-side city of Saumur, this estate has produced a ripe, spicy wine with a light texture over smoky flavors and generous red fruits. The wine still vibrates with young fruit, so let it settle and drink from 2022. (RV)" (06/2021) K&L Notes: Domaine de l'Enchantoir is run by the Brunet family in the new sub-appellation of Saumur-Puy-Notre-Dame. Distinguished from the rest of Saumur, Puy-Notre-Dame plantings sit between 50-150 meters, relatively high by Loire standards. The winery has been certified organic sinc...

Joel B. Payne writes: "If any producer has reached mythical status on the Loire, it is certainly Nicolas Joly. He is known to many, even to those who have never tasted a single glass of his wine, as the leading latter-day partisan of Rudolf Steiner’s agricultural philosophy. Given that he produces only 40,000 bottles from their 15 hectares of vineyard, it is not surprising that many wine lovers may never have even seen one." *Biodynamic*
