94 points Wine Advocate: "This is a second single-vineyard wine made by Cortonesi. The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Poggiarelli reveals dense and rich fiber that wraps thickly but smoothly over the palate. This wine is woven tightly with soft layers of black fruit, plum, spice, tar and licorice. It is important to underline the difference between the more compact and vertical La Mannella against this more generous and broad-based wine, especially when making food-pairing decisions. This is your proverbial charred-meat wine. (ML)" (02/2022) 93 points Jam...

93 points Vinous: "The bouquet on the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is almost confectionary, with sweet Christmas spice giving way to sugar-dusted plums, black cherries, cloves and hints of cocoa. It washes across the palate with velvety waves of polished red fruits, as hints of sour citrus and inner rose tones create contrast and balance. This tapers off structured with fine tannins, a twang of tart black currant and salted licorice. The 2016 needs time to unwind and integrate the wood spice that currently dominates the nose, but there’s a lot und...

From the producer: 2021 is a very important date for Luxardo as it marks our 200th Anniversary. To celebrate the gratifying milestone of two centuries of history, the company is now putting back on the market, in a strictly limited edition, the most prestigious product in its range, Maraschino Perla Dry. This Maraschino Luxardo Riserva Speciale was last produced in the distant 1970s. Maraschino Perla Dry has a high alcohol content (40% alc./vol.), a considerably reduced sugar content (hence the term“dry”), and a marasca cherry distillate base more than 5...

2019 Le Cinciole "Petresco" Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT (Previously $60) (Previously $60)
Top Pick!
97 points Vinous: "The 2019 Petresco picks up where the 2018 left off, although it is perhaps a bit more reserved at this stage than its older sibling was. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2019 possesses notable depth and intensity. Time in the glass brings out shades of red/purplish Sangiovese fruit mixed with suggestions of new leather, spice and menthol. The 2019 spent two years in wood (equal parts cask and barrique) followed by a year in cement. (AG)" (08/2023) K&L Notes: Antonio Galloni for Vinous on the producer: "I was once again deep...

2018 Sesta di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino (Previously $60) (Previously $60)
Top Pick!
94 points Decanter: "This tiny estate is located in the area of Sesta - Montalcino’s wild southeastern reaches. Sesta di Sopra’s wines capture the scented Mediterranean vegetation and generous warmth – even in 2018. Violet, dark plum and cinnamon scents give way to exotic woodland herbs and even porcini nuances. One of the vintage's more sumptuous examples, it proposes ample plush fruit hemmed in by firm yet seductively textured tannins. An appetising minerality runs through it, and lingering succulence begs another sip. (MM)" (11/2022) 93 points James...

96 points Vinous: "The 2019 Gattinara Valferrana is a dark, potent wine. It deftly marries fruit intensity with elegance, with deep notes of lavender, spice, menthol and crushed rocks. Time in the glass is works wonders here. If anything, I may have underestimated this last year! (AG) 96+" (02/2024)

The Matelica region of the Marche is one of the most unique growing zones in all of Italy; it is a north-south valley in the middle of the Apennine mountain range that once was a salt lake. The orientation of the valley closes it off from the warm coastal waters and gives it a more continental climate of cold winters and hot summers with cool nights, the perfect balance to make vibrant wines.

2018 Sesta di Sopra "Magistra" Brunello di Montalcino (Previously $90) (Previously $90)
Top Pick!
95 points James Suckling: "The aromas jump out with ripe berries, nutmeg, sweet potato and ginger. Full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Excellent energy here with a solid structure and a unique flavor profile. From organically grown grapes. Extremely well done for the vintage. " (11/2022) 94 points Wine Advocate: "Here's a new special section of Sangiovese from Sesta di Sopra. The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Magistra shows a slightly bigger constitution, but not by much, compared to the 2018 Brunello annata. The Magistra is also more open-knit in term...

92 points James Suckling: "A burly wine of considerable concentration. A twine of green pepper, stalky fennel and Alpine amaro, with some barrique cedar edges. Yet the mid-palate lacks the gusto necessary to mitigate and ameliorate the herbal patina. Made on a drier side, with the pursuit of freshness evident. (NG)" (05/2023) 91 points Wine Spectator: "A chewy red enlivened by a tang of balsamico acidity, delivering dried cranberry and raspberry fruit, mace and orange zest flavors underscored by hints of cured tobacco, smoke and fresh earth. Sleek and ...

94 points Decanter: "Fermented with its indigenous yeast and macerated for 40 days with a submerged cap, then aged in large oak casks for 24 months. The fruit is restrained, cherry kernel-like, with sweet violet, balsamic hints and rhubarb minerality. Savoury on the palate, it shows velvety tannins of significant extraction with long-lasting acidity. A wine focused on the roots rather than on the fruits; restrained, mineral and of great austere elegance. (AF)" (01/2023) 94 points James Suckling: "Lemon blossom with cherry and sliced strawberry aromas t...

96 points Wine Advocate: "Cerretta is one of my favorite sites in Serralunga d'Alba because it consists of vines wrapped around a hilltop with various exposures. For that reason, Cerretta wines can vary widely from producer to producer. The Azelia 2019 Barolo Cerretta has dark fruit and spice, but the bouquet is mostly colored by flinty mineral tones, smoke and pencil shaving. It offers terrific balance and also manages some softly perfumed notes of violet and blue flower that you don't get in the other wines. It sees 50 days of extended maceration and 3...

93 points Vinous: "The 2020 Per'è Palummo La Vigna dei Mille Anni is incredibly pretty, with shades of violet and lavender giving way to crushed blackberries, sage and hints of wet stone. Vibrant and zesty within, this washes across the palate with a perfumed blend of wild berries and spices, energized by a core of juicy acidity. Its structure comes through in the finish, incredibly long and staining with a primary concentration that puckers the cheeks. Through it all, the 2020’s tannins are sweet and round, making for a truly harmonious experience. This...

96 points Decanter: "Luigi and Lorenzo Scavino prolong the maceration for up to 60 days, and ageing in botti for 30 months. This Margheria is thus more concentrated, big and powerful compared to other examples. There's a freshness of sweet violet on the nose, with liquorice and smoky woodland notes and a pomegranate core, slightly bloody. The long acid is tightly knit with velvety tannins. Graceful and powerful, the palate is soaked with the wines's floral character, and austere on the finish – which is normal at this stage. A great wine in a great vinta...

96 points Decanter: "Bricco Fiasco is a single cru, vinified by itself since 1978, today from vines of 85 years old. The wine, after long maceration and ageing in botti grandi, opens up to smoky woodland notes, with citrus leaf, bark, wild strawberry and rose water delicacy. Full of sucrosity on the palate, the attack is youthful, with firm acidity and grainy, very elegant tannins. Structure and concentration are perfectly woven and poised, giving to this cru terrific balance which will count for ageing. (AF)" (01/2023) 95 points Wine Advocate: "Bricco...

93 points Decanter: "From a more volcanic soil than the Lesona wines, this Bramaterra features opulent cherry aromas with a light and attractive confected tone. It's dense and peppery, more virile than Lessona, youthful and assertive now with punch and drive. Textured tannins on the finish. (SB) " (09/2022) 93 points Vinous: "The 2018 Bramaterra is laced with macerated cherry, blood orange, cinnamon, cedar, sweet spice and tobacco. The 2018 is done in a pretty forward style for the appellation, with plenty of upfront fruit and a bit of oak, but retains...

93 points James Suckling: "Aromas of dried apples, brioche, toffee caramel and almonds. Medium- to full-bodied with tangy acidity and energetic fizz. Grilled lemons and hazelnuts together with a creamy, toasty finish. Drink now. " (01/2023) 90 points Vinous: "The 2012 Pas Dosé Alta Langa Cuvèe Novecento is understated with a delicate blend of sweet smoke and dried peaches complicated by gingery spice. This soothes with a subtle bead of fine bubbles as suggestions of crisp green apple add a crunchy sensation toward the close. It finishes with decent len...

The "del Cerro" Verdicchio di Matelica from Belisario is a standout expression of Verdicchio, produced in the Matelica DOC, a smaller and more mountainous region compared to the more famous Castelli di Jesi. The cooler climate and mineral-rich soils of Matelica bring out the crispness, structure, and depth of this native grape, making this Verdicchio an excellent example of the variety’s potential for complexity and ageability. On the nose, the "del Cerro" reveals delicate aromas of green apple, citrus peel, and white peach, with underlying notes of al...

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine expresses itself with aromas of wild cherries, tart red plums, dried violets and oolong tea leaves. The palate is elegant and almost dances across the mouth, leading with ripe red fruits that give way to savory flavors of fresh bay leaf, clove and balsam. Drink 2025–2040. *Editors' Choice* (JP)" (09/2023) 91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "There is a more pronounced wood presence in the inaugural release of the 2019 Barolo Serradenari, which spent one year in French barrique followed by a year in Slavonian cask. Ripe with toa...

Guido Rivella had a multi-decade career as the winemaker for Angelo Gaja. Now retired, he and his daughter have a tiny estate in Barbaresco. This Barbera comes from a vineyard next to the Barbaresco vineyard "Cole." It is an eastern-facing, 1.4-acre piece. The wine is fermented in stainless steel for 12-14 days and then aged in used barrique for six months. Barbera has naturally high acid, but this wine shows exceptional balance and is supple and layered, with complex earthy aromatics.

98 points Vinous: "Silky, perfumed and polished, the 2004 Ornellaia is a fabulous example of the vintage. From magnum, the 2004 is exceptionally youthful and super-finessed, with expressive, floral aromatics and layers of finely-knit fruit. What else can I say? The 2004 is tremendous. (AG) " (12/2016) 98 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a hopelessly gorgeous wine with so much energy, intensity, density and good cheer. The superb ensemble—Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot—delivers chocolate fudge, ripe cherry, rhubarb, cola, ...

The Ascesa Sforzato di Valtellina is a distinguished example of Sforzato, a unique style of Nebbiolo from the Valtellina region. Crafted by Ascesa, this wine undergoes a traditional appassimento process, where the grapes are partially dried to concentrate flavors before fermentation. The result is a rich and powerful red wine with a deep, complex character. It presents a bouquet of ripe black cherries, dried figs, and dark chocolate, complemented by notes of licorice, tobacco, and earthy undertones. On the palate, it features a full-bodied structure with...

The Alba DOC is a unique blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera, to follow the DOC rules the grapes have to be co-fermented rather than a later blend. This wine is 70% Nebbiolo and 30% Barbera aged for 20 months in large barrels. This small DOC as a whole only produces just over 2,000 cases total and for Ermanno Costa only 5,000 bottles produced, I loved this wine for its unique authenticity and great balance you'll love it.
