Signatory has long been one of the preferred independent bottlers on the market. For almost three decades now, we've been selling Signatory because their cask selection process is second to none in the industry. They also have a knack for building incredible collections of rare casks, so walking through their warehouse is an absolute dream. As you pass Bowmore from the 70s and Port Ellen, you'll stumble by Dallas Dhu and Rosebank. Yet it's some of the modern stocks that are most shocking! Highland Park on its own is pretty rare outside of distillery bott...

93 points Whisky Advocate: "The first thing you notice is the elegant fragrance of lychee, spring blossoms, lily, rosewater, and raspberry meringue. Deeper in, grassy notes with star fruit, kumquat, and kaffir lime leaves. The flavors offer perfection in their simplicity: silky honey, soft spices, crystalized pineapple, barley sugar, lemon, and orange. On the finish, the spices chatter on and on as the sweet citrus and honey fade in and out. One to cherish. (JM, Spring 2018)" K&L Notes: The Suntory whiskies are handcrafted at Japan's oldest distillery, ...

This stupendous and unusual singel cask from the very hot GlenAllachie distillery its truly unprecedented. We've had one other GlenAllachie single barrel previously, but that one wasn't nearly as intense and powerful as this wild barrel. The distillery itself wasn't an important player in the market until a group he Scotch industry's luminaries took over the reigns led by Billy Walker. Walker has spent 50 years in the Scotch industry, most notably revitalizing Glendronach and Benriach before taking over the GlenAllachie distillery in 2017. Now, just like...

The famously delicious Midwinter Night's Dram is finally back! The Midwinter Night's Dram is the perfect blend of old aged Rye whiskies long finished in Port Wine and French Oak barrels. The rye forms offers delicate of vanilla, caramel and cinnamon, while the port barrels delivers dense plummy, dried fruits. Finally, the high quality French oak barrels offer deep spice and rich sweet oak. This is the first t...

Ardmore is widely underappreciated, the reasons for which are not always clear. They make a beautiful peated Highland style, but the owners spend almost no time selling it. Maybe, they want to focus on their other peated properties like Bowmore and Laphroaig, or perhaps the Ardmore is such a crucial part in so many popular blends, they donāt have the stock. But we always want more -Ardmore. When we do see Ardmore, it is typically in refill (3rd+ fill) ex-bourbon and hogsheads diverted from the blenderās grasps. Only two other sherried Ardmores have ever ...

The wonderful Glengoyne distillery is always one to keep an eye. Built in 1833, it was sold by Archiball Macllelan to the Lang Brothers where it remained until 1965 when it was purchased by a predecessor organization to Edrington Group. In 2003, it was sold to blenders and bottlers Ian Macleod and they've rightfully made Glengoyne a worldwide brand. They're famous for their sherried malt and it's rare to see a butt make it out of their warehouses under anyone else's label. That's why we were so excited to see this pop up and when we tasted it we knew we ...

Just when you think you've tasted every type of booze known to man, you discover that there are more regionally specific spirits being distilled in places you've never considered. Take Bolivia, where they make a pisco-like spirit called Singani, distilled from Muscat of Alexandria grapes grown high in the Andes mountains. Muscat is an aromatic varietal, known for its fruity and floral character, and the Singani spirit takes on many of the perfumes found in the expressive grape. The result is a clean and vibrant brandy that drinks like something in betwee...

This is the Thompson Brothers foray into the world of blending. It's also proof that they've got some of the absolute best palates in the business. They seem to be getting access to stocks where others struggle, and this little vatting of over 8-year-old malts is one of the most intriguing and delicious malts on our shelves at any price point. SRV5 refers to Station Road Vat 5, the wooden vessel where this whisky is mingled before bottling. The Dornoch boys bottle in very small batches and the source material is of the highest quality. While the specif...

Here is your dark sherry bomb for the season! While it's not coffee dark, it's a gorgeous auburn/polished mahogany color. The simply lovely hue is a hint at the stupendous malt inside the bottle. The wonderful Dailuaine Distillery is finally garnering some notoriety with aficionados and the wider populace in general. It's taken many years to pull this lesser-known distillery out of obscurity and put it on the pedestal it deserves. Now that it's finally getting the recognition it deserves, maybe we wish we could hide it once again. This is officially the ...

Old Potrero is a true pioneer of modern whiskey. 100% malted rye pot distilled single malt - being made in San Francisco starting in 1993. Bruce Joseph has been making the whiskies (and their other fun products) since day one and is still the master distiller today. This 17 year old cask strength bottling was aged for 24 month air dried fine grain new American oak - and it is a beast.

The beauty of the Thompson Brothers is that they're willing to take risks. This offering is indeed a risky proposition for a bottler, the very reason the big guys were willing to let it go. On paper it reads like a very expensive blended scotch. But why add an age statement, when a 12-year-old Johnnie Walker is a fraction of the price? The age statement tells the entire story here and our friends at Dornoch care little for artificial labels and quality statements, all they care about is getting damn good whisky into your glass for an incredible price. So...

This shockingly delicious high proof blanco has come completely out of left field. From the relatively unknown Agave Conquista Distillery, it delivers a high proof blanco experience in a completely transparent way. The agave is organically farmed, estate-grown and additive-free. After roasting in brick ovens, it's fermented with only native yeast in stainless steel tanks before being double distilled on small pots and bottled at high proof in liters. Expect classic Lowland aromas and a crispy yet robust mouthfeel.

This espadin (A. Angustifolia) mezcal is the perfect pick for anyone starting to explore the world of quality mezcal or as a relatively inexpensive option for mezcal-based cocktails. It's very approachable and laden with sweet agave fruit. The smoke component is decidedly there, but not very intense, as one would expect with a well-made mezcal. A rich texture makes this a delightful sipper or stout component in a mezcal variant of the Last Word. Gold medal winner in Tequila Aficionado's 2021 Brands of Promise.

This stupendous little Arran is a first for us, peated single barrel Arran! The young distillery was founded in 1995 on the sparsely populated island of Arran that was once a hot bed of illicit malt production. At one time there were upwards of 50 distillers operating in the area. Situated in the tiny town of Lochranza, the peated expression from the Island distiller has always been rare, but going forward stocks will be incredibly limited as they've moved production of peated malt to the second distillery on the island, Lagg. Owned by Isle of Arran dist...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "The silly name of this delicious, hard-to-put-down blended Scotch supposedly is derived from the days āwhen farmers hid their home-made whisky from the nosey excise officers in barrels marked āSheep Dip.āā Made with a blend of 16 single malts from the four major whisky regions, this has an intense apple aroma and flavor, overlaid with a faint curl of smoke. The earthy smokiness grows on the finish, with intriguing dry and savory notes, like bakerās chocolate and brine. Pair this with crumbly aged cheeses." (02/2013) K&L Note...

We've had a roller coaster of a relationship with Single Grain whisky at K&L. The redheaded stepchild of Scotch, it's long been a category requiring significant amounts of education. If it wasn't super old and cheap most people turned their noses up at it after being ingrained with the pre-conception that good scotch is single malt, hard stop full stop. But occasionally we come across a barrel so unique that it defies those pre-conceptions. This absolutely monster cask is only the second grain we've ever sold that was aged in sherry and comes from the no...

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "A medium-complex bouquet that demands focus and time; offers scents of grass, textile, peanut, beeswax with an underlying honeyed sweetness. The palate is mellow and marshmallow sweet, then features luscious and delicate flavors of honey, cola nut and cream. Elegant, poised and succulent. (PP)" (08/2007) K&L Notes: El Dorado Rum is made by Demerara Distillers Limited in Guyana, perhaps the single greatest rum producer on the planet. Having operated since the 1600s, it supplied the British Royal Navy with rum for more than...

This lovely Tormore will certainly be the last thing most people consider, but for the lucky ones who take the plunge, it will be undoubtedly be the sleeper of the whisky season. The gorgeoous distillery is such a welcome site after hours on the A95 working your up the River Spey. The striking copper roof and stone balconies makes it one of Scotland's most attractive. It is infact one of Scotland's youngest single malt distillery, the first new distillery built in the 20th century, designed by Alexander Cullen for Long John Ltd, founders of Ben Nevis dis...

Itās very smooth and refreshing, with pear, peppermint, lemon, lime, green tea, kiwi, and herbal notes, finishing with chopped mint, more herbal layers, and gentle peppery spice. Here's a fabulous follow-up to the exceptionally good 25-year-old unpeated Ardmore that we featured in last year's Whisky Season. This much for typical Ardmore was peated to the usual medium level of around 14 ppm. Of course, this is using highland peat sourced from terrestrial vegetation rather than the Islay peat which is composed of ocean vegetation. Filled into a high-quality 2nd fill ex-bourbon barrel in July of 2009, it was bottled at cask strength of 57% abv without the use of coloring or chillfiltration. The resulting whisky is extremely expressi...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "The newest blended whisky offering from Hibiki is burnished gold in the glass and has a bold aroma that mixes vanilla, fresh pear and a hint of smoke. This lovely lowland distillery is one of the closest historical distilleries to the city of Glasgow and you might get lucky and see a head of Highland cattle that occasionally graze on the well-manicured lawns if you make the short trek out to Clydebank. Like most Lowland distillers Auchentoshan does a proper triple distillation leaving a finer spirit with fewer impurities and a soft sweet malty character. The distillery was founded in 1823 and operated continuously until being completely rebuilt in the late 1960s. In 1984, the famed whisky maker Stanley...

Yet somehow, it all comes together: the opening salvo is spicy and bold with anise, pepper, and clove, before moving to a waxy lemon peel and juniper midpalate and finishing dry and dusty with suggestions of cocoa powder, coriander, and spicy grains of paradise. A good nicely aged Mortlach is something we wish we could offer more readily. Make it stupidly drinkable and at an unbelievably generous price, and weāll drop nearly everything else. This attractive little refill hogshead is a dreamy, offering malt driven style from the Beast of Dufftown. You can visit a bona fide Fairy Village in Dufftown these days or the famous Giant's Chair, but the wonderful distillery in the gully by the stream to the south of town is arguably the town's most magical spot. The Mortlach makes an extremely unique malt. The distillati...

(KN)" (12/2012) 93 points Vinous: "Dartigalongueās XO is burly, with cologne-like aromas, and surprisingly complex for its youth (10-year-old brandies in the blend). The pride of downtown Edinburgh is now the joy of the K&L gin department. Once contracted from London, today the complete line of Edinburgh gin is distilled either underground at the eponymous Edinburgh Gin Distillery, or at their recently opened second distillery at The Biscuit Factory in the historic port of Leith. Flavors layer molasses and maple with dried sage and savory spices, plus a hint of orange peel in the back. (KN)" (11/2016) K&L Notes: This fabulous collaboration between Antica Distilleria Quaglia, Chef Frederico Ricatto, and the Jerry Thomas Project in Rome is looking to reinvent the omnipresent vermouth. YOLA Mezcal holds a perfect balance between authenticity and aesthetics. Created in collaboration between Yola Jiminez (of La Clandestina Mezcaleria fame), Lykke Li (Swedish songwriting sensation), and Gina Correll Aglietti (chef and stylist), YOLA counters the patriarchal system ubiquitous in Oaxaca. YOLA is run by women, bottled by women. We've seen time and again that no palenque succeeds without the contribution of strong women, and YOLA provides a place where the women of Oaxaca can have steady work. The result is absolutely delicious mezcal that wi...

The Blue Run bourbon brand is one of the industry's most meteoric rises of any new brand. How did they do it? They got great people to bottle great bourbon in small batches and put it in a beautiful bottle. We were early Blue Run adopters at K&L, not because we loved the bottles and we do, but because they were clever enough to hire one of our favorite people in the bourbon industry ā Jim Rutledge. Finishes bittersweet to sweet. *Best Buy* (PP)" (11/2008) K&L Notes: The Jacopo Poli Sarpa is a perfect grappa for those who like a dry, not overly aromatic style that is very rich and complex. This may be the youngest single grain we've ever bottled, but we did so with good reason. The facility is notable for being the very first in Scotland to install a column still and begin producing single grain whisky for blending way back in the 1840s. It sits just across the Fife of Forth from Ediburgh and remains one of the most important production facilities in the Diageo portfolio. In particular, it's notable that in the 1980s a GNS plant was erected for the production of neutral spirit to be used in such famous brands as Tanqueray, Pimm's and Smirn...
