93 points James Suckling: "Dried apple and pineapple with hints of coconut, steel and some flint. Full-bodied and tight with intensity and power. This will open nicely with bottle age. Try after 2022." (07/2021) 92 points Vinous: "The 2019 Chardonnay is a unique wine, as it includes a fair amount of Viognier that adds pretty floral and tropical overtones. Apricot, mint, tangerine oil, chamomile and dried flowers all open nicely in the glass. (AG)" (01/2021)

Maxville has an incredible estate high in the mountains of Chiles Valley, a sub-AVA of Napa Valley, famed for its rugged, rocky soils and cooler growing temperatures from the 1,200ft+ elevation. Established back in 1974, this large property is over 1000 acres in total, but only 10% of that is planted to vines. The rest left as wild habitat, forest and a large lake. Winemaker Camille Benitah was born and raised in Bordeaux. She learned her craft at the La Tour Blanche school in Sauternes, and worked for several Chateaux around Bordeaux before moving to Na...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine is vibrant, with aromas of baked Bing cherry, strawberry, plum, dried herbs and vanilla cream on the nose. Flavors of red currant-cranberry confiture and orange bitters wrap around cardamom spice, and a long, supple finish. (TP)" (10/2024) K&L Notes: A real wow factor wine, the 2023 Brick & Mortar Anderson Valley Pinot Noir is explosive on the nose and palate. Sourced from two top vineyards in the deep end of Anderson Valley were the daily temperature swings are the most dramatic producing perfectly balanced fruit....

For decades now, our Kalinda private label has been providing K&L customers with awesome wines at a fraction of what they'd normally pay under the producers' mainstay labels. Naturally, no producer wants their wines on the market for less than what they'd usually sell for, so the trade-off is anonymity. This is a superb Cabernet-very elegant and user friendly already. Lots of sweet cassis and red fruit aromas that follow to the palate. No hard edges here-drink it young with a prime rib or steak dinner. Will cellar well for five plus years. clyde
97 points Wine Enthusiast: "Winemaker Matt Dees is considered one of the best winemakers anywhere, and this blend is ample reason to believe the hype. Intense, focused and dry but rich aromas of dark fruit, roasted wood, crushed rocks and wild herb enliven the nose, while the palate is weighty yet expertly tense. Flavors of dried red fruit, peppery spice and milk chocolate float into the finish. (MK)" (03/2023) 96 points James Suckling: "The black berry character dominates here but there is plenty of crushed stones as well as orange peel. It’s full-bod...

Giacone Ranch Vineyard sits at the confluence of the Estrella River and Huerhuero Creek with incredibly rocky, gravely soils like those of Pessac-Léognan in Bordeaux. This sub-region of Paso Robles sees big diurnal shifts in temperature with hot days and cool nights as ocean air pushes in from the west. These ideal conditions produce and powerful, concentrated and opulent style of Cabernet with intense flavors and lush textures on the palate.

93 points Vinous: "The 2018 Pinot Noir Estate Upper Picnic Block is eminently charming in its sweet-fruited, exuberantly spiced, medium-weight build. Layers of kirsch, raspberry sauce, cinnamon, cardamom and iodine mark a wine of sexiness and sensuality. Again, this is a style reflective of a different era for Neely. Growing season differences notwithstanding, the 2018 checks in at 14.1% alcohol, nearly two full degrees higher than the 2021 tasted alongside. I prefer this edition, as it’s still finessed but has more stage presence and inner harmony. The ...

93 points Wine Spectator: "Ripe and enticing, with alluring flavors of raspberry, mulberry and blackberry fruit suavely infused with notes of black tea and singed anise, plus a mesquite hint. Offers a fleshy feel but doesn't sacrifice tension through the savory and mineral-tinged finish. (JM)" (09/2024) K&L Notes: Sourced from the Putnam Vineyard in the Annapolis sub-region of the northwest Sonoma Coast. A small family owned and operated vineyard just above the fogline, only 5 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The fruit was cold-soaked for 5 days before an...

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Made by Greg Brewer and already bottled, the 2023 Chardonnay comes from the Mission Mills Vineyard just outside of Los Alamos. Its vivid medium gold hue is followed by a vibrant nose of salted citrus, tangerine, exotic flowers, and subtle spice. Medium-bodied, pure, rounded, and beautifully balanced, it has plenty of power and density, integrated acidity, and a great finish. This impeccably made Chardonnay should be snatched up by readers, as it competes with wines at two to three times the price." (08/2024) 94 points Vinous: "T...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Damp earth and porcini-dust aromas meet with dried meats, clove and crushed berry on the nose of this bottling. A black raspberry compote flavor is lifted by chai spice and salted pork elements on the layered palate. (MK)" (04/2023)

95 points James Suckling: "This just takes off at the finish, with bright, tangy acidity and plenty of minerality. Full-bodied and so tangy and energetic. Fantastic chardonnay. Hints of aniseed and flint. Grows in the glass. Delicious now, but will age beautifully." (03/2022) 94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2018 Chardonnay Estate sports a medium gold hue to go with a gorgeous nose of white peach, stone fruits, honeysuckle, and toasted bread. Beautifully balanced, elegant, and with plenty of sweet fruit and great acidity, this is a killer Chardonnay I'd be ...

About the producer: "Nalle Winery is about as "family" as it gets. Son Andrew runs the joint, while father and mother Doug and Lee Nalle give wisdom from 31 years of winery experience. Younger son Sam, a scientist in San Francisco, gives encouragement and support. Then there's our bevy of friends who magically appear at the right moment to lend a hand. Steve Edgar, from Arizona, still shows up for crush, and has, since 1991. Our winery and home rest on land that has been in Lee's family, the Henderlongs, since 1927. Her cousins, the Saini family, run the...
94 points Vinous: "The 2021 M5, Margerum's Grenache-based Rhône blend, is superb. Deep and vibrant to the core, the M5 is another knock-out in this range. Dark red/blue fruit, spice, leather, tobacco and dried herbs are all dialed up in this deep, fleshy red. (AG)" (09/2023) 94 points Wine Spectator: "Structure meets polish in this full-bodied blend, which offers deep blackberry and raspberry flavors that interplay with licorice, smoked pepper and garrigue and finish with well-buffed tannins. *Ranked #17 Top 100 Wines of 2023* (TF)" (10/2023) K&L Not...
95 points The Wine Independent: "Pale to medium garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Melange Rouge has a profound nose of red and black cherries, violets, and dark chocolate with underlying licorice, Sichuan pepper, smoked meats, and tar. The medium to full-bodied palate is lively and vibrant - pop-rocks in your mouth - with lots of texture interest combining plush and chewy, and bright and lifted fruit leading to a peppery finish. The blend is 54% Syrah, 25% Grenache, 9% Graciano, 6% Petite Sirah, and 6% Viognier. The wine was fermented with 40% whole cluste...

100 points James Suckling: "The aromas to this are multidimensional and fascinating with black truffles, bark, cloves, black currants, citrus, and even ginseng. Full-bodied, yet reserved and austere with chewy and powerful tannins that remain polished and refined. The flavors are more umami and savory. Then there are forest fruits and blood-orange undertones. The wine goes on for minutes. A wine to age for a lifetime. It's an experience to taste this. A new classic showing its history and tradition as a source of the greatest wines ever from Napa. A wine...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Cassis and blueberries, dark chocolate and spiced cocoa are carried on a framework of durable tannins into a persistent finish. This wine will do well with decanting to help open up its flavors, or can be held in cellar for several more years. Drink 2028–2038." 94 points Wine Spectator: "***#75 on the Top 100 Wines of 2024*** Ripe and structured but fresh in feel, with a lovely, pure beam of cassis driving through, supported by mouthwatering apple wood, savory and iron details along the way. 95 points Vinous: "The 2021 Hair of the Bear is an unusual blend of 75% Petite Syrah and 25% Roussanne. It’s a combination that works so well. Inky dark fruit, licorice, cloves, chocolate and sweet spice all meld together effortlessly, while perfumed floral notes lift the finish. (AG)" (07/2023) 94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2021 Hair of the Bear is based largely on Petite Sirah but includes a whopping 25% Roussanne, all from the estate Stolpman Vineyard on Ballard Canyon. It follows the house style and is focused and vibrant, with medium to full-bodied ...
91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Vibrant and fruity, this full-bodied, unoaked wine will be a star with fish and shellfish. It melds a sense of richness from Bosc pears and Pippin apples along with appetizing acidity enhanced by blocking the malolactic conversion. "
After working as the vineyard manager for Newton Vineyards for over 30 years, Lupe Maldonado bought a 10-acre piece of land in the cool southern tip of Napa (in Jamieson Canyon), and planted vineyards in the dark, gravelly clay soil. He brought in Jean Hoefliger from Newton as his consulting winemaker.
96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Cuvee 99 checks in as 66% Grenache, 21% Syrah, 11% Mourvèdre, and the rest equal parts Viognier and Roussanne. It has a decidedly Rhône-like nose of ripe blackberries, currants, saddle leather, cured meats, lavender, and pepper. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, rich, sexy red that's just about overflowing with personality and character. It has some firmer tannins, but the balance here is terrific, it stays fresh and lively, and it’s just a savory, complex, complete wine that delivers the goods." (08/2021) K&L No...

Coming from a small one acre vineyard in Woodside, CA, Whiskey Hill Cabernet Sauvignon is a true boutique production with just 2-3 barrels made each vintage. This area at the foot of the Santa Cruz Mountains is historically significant to California Cabernet as the site back in the 1890s that Emmett Rixford planted his cuttings brought from the famed Chateau Margaux in Bordeaux. The moderate climate and Franciscan Shale soils here are perfect for Cabernmet Sauvignon. A special winery-direct deal brings this unique little wine to you at a fantastic price....

(AG) " (06/2019) 91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard Block Q is distinctly different from the base cuvée and is all Pommard clone, from vines planted in the 1970s, that was 75% destemmed and spent 16 months in 50% new French oak. 93 points John Gilman: "The 2022 Evangelho Vineyard bottling from Cody and Emily Rasmussen is composed from a blend of ninety percent, very old vine Carignan and ten percent Mourvèdre. The Carignan vines are ungrafted and were planted in the 1890s! The wine was fermented with thirty percent whole clusters and raised all in foudres and the 2022 comes in at an even fourteen percent octane. It delivers a deep and complex aromatic constellation of cassis, sweet dark berries, chocolate, smoked meats, a lovely base of soil, a lovely array of spice tones and ju...

97 points Decanter: "Immediately evokes Old World style on the nose, with a bouquet of mushrooms, arboreal earth and a tinge of black fruit, but on the palate, a generous helping of dried currant, figs and plums. Atypical for a varietal Cabernet Franc in that the pyrazine note is next to nonexistent. But there is a freshness and acid backbone that threads beautifully through a well-balanced and delightful wine. (JG)" (02/2024)

Lush, velvety, creamy, bursting with berries, fragrant flowers, and soft wafts of vanilla, the 2001 Knox is a wine for hedonists. The aromas are dominated by red fruit and berries, but there is the usual Santa Maria hard spice (juniper berry, black pepper, cardamom), earth, lavender, and mushroom. The structure of the 2001 will allow it to age in spite of its young vine provenance. The mouth is intense and acidic with disengaged red berries, citrus and spice. The Santa Lucia Highlands, located on the east-facing terraces of the Santa Lucia mountain range, has a rich history dating back to the 1790s when Spanish settlers first planted vinifera grapes. Though initially focused on vegetable farming, the region's true potential for winegrowing was realized in the 1970s by pioneers like Nicky Hahn and Rich Smith, with the area becoming famous for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay by the 1990s. Officially designated an AVA in 1992, the region now spans 5,700 acres, producing some of California's most sought-after wines...
