2020 Château Laurou "Les Complices" Fronton
Top Pick!
96 points Decanter: "Rapturous perfume inspires and is enhanced by a cooling breezy freshness which billows and swells along to the long and haunting finish. An assault on the senses! (DWWA 2023)" (06/2023) K&L Notes: The area of Fronton lies in the southwest of France, near more famous regions like Madiran and Cahors but the area has a distinctive character all its own. Located between the Tarn and Garonne rivers, the region is rich with clay, gravel and silty soils. The main grape in the region, Negrette excels in this area and as a grape variety is...

95 points Decanter: "A jewel of a wine (Gros Manseng with Petit Courbu and Arrufiac), so particular and distinctive, showing no ambition other than singing its origin. Aromas of apple and notes of vibrant peach, mirabelle plum, dried herbs and a suave enhancement of lees. Elegant and quite delicious with a finesse and fine spine of acidity. (Panel Tasting) *Top White Wines of 2022*" (11/2022) K&L Notes: Founded in 1979, Vignerons de Plaimont is a union of cooperative wine cellars based in the South West of France, in the Gers region. A merger of three...

2018 Château Bouscassé Madiran
Top Pick!
95 points Wine Enthusiast: "A magnificent wine Alain Brumont that is still young. It is deep in dark Tannat flavors and a dense structure, the wine powerful with its black fruits and texture. Smoky, ripe, the wine's wood aging is set to smooth and give depth as it matures. (RV)" (10/2022) 93 points Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Château Bouscassé, the first crafted entirely by Antoine Veiry, is a blend of 60% Tannat, 20% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon matured 36 months in 20% new oak barrels. It displays a complex, spicy bouquet with aromas of plu...

The small appellation of Marcillac sits on the eastern edge of the region we know as the Sud-Ouest. Marcillac's main grape is Mansois (aka Fer Servadou and/or Braucol) and it must make up 80% of all appellation wines. Claudine Vinas and her husband Eric took over her family's farm in the 90s and have slowly expanded their holdings. Their vines are planted in the mostly iron-rich red clay-limestone soils in which this variety thrives. Costes Rouges has grown from 3 to 6 hectares since they assumed control and received organic certification in 2012. T...

Sweet wines from the French Pyrenees are often overlooked but they provide incredible value. La Magendia is a blend of mostly Gros Manseng and some Petit Manseng. Depending on vintage this finishes with about 60-70g/L of residual sugar but with so much brilliant acidity the wines never come off as cloying or overly sweet.

2022 Clos Lapeyre Jurançon Sec
Price: $17.99

The vineyards of Cahors date back to the Roman occupation, making them among some of the oldest in France. Nicknamed the "black wine" because of its beautiful opaque color, wines from Cahors were historically used to darken the color of Bordeaux claret. Historically, popes and Russian tsars have imbibed this palate-staining wine, which was also the preferred red wine of author Ernest Hemingway. Château la Coustarelle is owned by Michel and Nadine Cassot and located in the village of Prayssac, next to the renowned Clos de Gamot.

This adaptation of a 16th century recipe is a re-creation from the early modern age, but seems unusually contemporary. A blend of fresh grape juice and young Bas Armagnac, this light aperitif is versatile and has mass appeal. A blend of 50% Colombard and 50% Ugni Blanc, production consists of 100% free-run juice which is settled and decanted. Next, once a year, the fresh grape juice and young Armagnacs are blended in a closed vat. This is the Floc and is left to settle until the end of winter. Color: Straw-colored, gold-tinted. Nose: honey, candied fru...

Domaine Berthoumieu is owned by Didier Barre, who took over for his father Louis in the mid-eighties. Inspired by Alain Brumont of Domaine Bouscasse/Chateau Montus fame (regarded as the founder of modern Madiran), Didier produced a style of Madiran that is meant to be more approachable when young, with riper fruit and less brutal tannins. His top red wine is the cuvée Charles de Batz, which was the original name of d'Artignan. It is composed of 90% Tannat with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from vines that are at least 50 years old. To make this wine more access...
