2018 Château Haut-Monplaisir "Tradition" Cahors
Top Pick!
92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is a bold, ripe wine from a top Cahors producer. It has dense tannins without too much weight, giving aging potential to the ripe fruit. Spice and blackberry flavors have plenty of life ahead of them. Drink this fine wine from 2022. *Editors' Choice* (RV)" (11/2020) K&L Notes: Cahors, the ancestral home of Malbec, has experienced a renaissance in recent years. In its heyday, the wines of Cahors held more prestige than those of its neighbors in Bordeaux, but when phylloxera struck in the late 19th century, it took decade...

2020 Domaine de Millet Côtes de Gascogne Blanc
Back In Stock!
Côtes de Gascogne is primarily known for the production of Armagnac; it wasn’t until the last 20 years or so that producers began to take table wine production seriously. Traditionally, these wines would have been distilled into Armagnac. Producers found that by fermenting at lower temperatures in stainless steel, they could develop and preserve more powerful aromatics. Though yields are high, costs have stayed low and the wines are consequently some of the best bargain whites in France. Domaine de Millet is first and foremost a fifth-generation Armagnac...

2019 Herri Mina Irouleguy Blanc

Deep in an area renowned for its independent and strong ancestral culture, the Basque Country is in the southwestern-most part of France, just half an hour from Spain. Here, Irouléguy received its appellation contrôlée in 1970, with about 250 acres of vineyards cultivated by 60 growers.Jean-Claude Berrouet is an Irouléguy native who left home to serve for more than three decades as the winemaker at Château Pétrus. But the Basque region has a powerful pull, and Jean-Claude eventually returned home to his native soil. Appropriately, he named his estate “He...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "With vines on the third terrace above the river Lot, this estate occupies one of the top sites in Cahors. This wine provides a good example of the finesse from the property, never overpowering although still with structure and intense black fruits. Drink from 2021. (RV)" (06/2018) K&L Notes: Cahors, the ancestral home of Malbec, has experienced a renaissance in recent years. The small appellation of Marcillac sits on the eastern edge of the region we know as the Sud-Ouest. Marcillac's main grape is Mansois (aka Fer Servadou and/or Braucol) and it must make up 80% of all appellation wines. Claudine Vinas and her husband Eric took over her family's farm in the 90s and have slowly expanded their holdings. Their vines are planted in the mostly iron-rich red clay-limestone soils in which this variety thrives. Costes Rouges has grown from 3 to 6 hectares since they assumed control and received organic certification in 2012. T...

Irouléguy is in the Basque country of southwest France, and Domaine Ilarria, run by Peio Espil, is one of just a few independent producers there. After working at wineries in Sauternes and Jurançon, Espil came home and worked alongside his father before eventually taking over the family estate. The red is a blend of Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

2016 Château Bouscassé Madiran
Top Pick!
93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Mainly Tannat with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine comes from the home estate of Madiran leader Alain Brumont. The wine balances bold tannins from all three grapes with the power of black fruits, acidity and density. It needs to age and will be ready from 2022. (RV)" (04/2020) K&L Notes: Alain Brumont is one of the stars of Madiran. In 1979 he inherited his father's estate, Château Bouscassé. With little experience in the wine industry, he quickly educated himself and began transforming the landscape of Madi...
