2019 Bodegas Muga Blanco Rioja
Top Pick!
92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2019 Blanco is terrific, with a fresh, crisp, yet still textured and concentrated style. Lots of crushed citrus, white flowers, white grapefruit, and a touch of minerality all define the bouquet, and it's beautifully balanced, with bright acidity and clean, dry finish." (10/2020) 92 points James Suckling: "A layered, fruity white with sliced cooked lemon and some apple. Hints of hot stones. It’s full-bodied and dense with plenty of fruit. " (09/2020) 91 points Wine Spectator: "A thick texture carries juicy flavors of apple...

95 points James Suckling: "Traditional and beautiful in character with plum, balsamic, orange-peel and leather aromas and flavors. It’s medium-to full-bodied with creamy texture and a long, intense aftertaste." (10/2020) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Garnacha is an important component in the 2012 Viña Ardanza Reserva, where it represents 20% of the blend (the rest is, of course, Tempranillo). 2011 was a difficult vintage for Garnacha, so Viña Ardanza was not produced that year and they jumped from 2010, which had the mention "Selección Espe...

Here's a young Rioja that seriously overdelivers on the price. A classic flavor profile balanced by fresh acidity that's rounded out by a deft use of new oak.

91 points James Suckling: "It shows dried cherries, dried raspberries, cedar, tobacco and spices. Round and resolved on the palate with a good, but not overbearing, drying effect to the tannins. Solid on the finish." (06/2019) K&L Notes: A K&L Direct Import! Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. All of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 26 hectares, on chalky clay soil, all withi...

Based in the Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is a truly original bodega producing tasty, characterful wine for laughably low prices. They grow all their own grapes in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. The vineyards are closer to the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, a range whose elevation and visible snow covered peaks are even more dramatic than the Sierra Cantabria range to the north. Martínez Alesanco's Rosado is made from Garnacha and white Viura grapes in a typical "clarete" style for which this ...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Reserva is the wine they first produced with the idea to rescue the traditional Reserva (and also Gran Reserva) wines that were almost dying in the mid-1990s. And from the vintages I have tasted, I think this 2014, though not an easy harvest, is the one that best resembles the wines from yesteryear. Yes, they used some French oak, but they kept using American barrels. It's still young, lively and a little creamy, especially when tasted next to the Gran Reserva. It has a balsamic, ashy twist, a medium bod...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The bottle I tasted of the 2016 Viña Real Crianza is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from Rioja Alavesa that fermented destemmed in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and matured in French and American oak barrels for 13 to 14 months, during which time it was racked every five or six months. It's expressive, deliciously aromatic, floral and elegant, reflecting a cool year that delivered fresh wines that seem to be very approachable early on. 2016 is a pretty vintage, but this wi...

98 points James Suckling: "The aromas of this show an amazing freshness of flowers and herbs such as lavender, rosemary, and violet. Then it goes to raspberry, candy and currants. Black licorice too. A truly great wine on the nose. Full-bodied, racy and linear. So polished. It's like a red ruby. 86% Tempranillo and 14% Mazuelo in the blend. For release in September 2015. Great length and future. Give it three years or so. Or decant two hours in advance." (11/2015) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A worthy follow-up of the 2005, the 2007 Castil...

2019 Bodegas Lanzaga (Telmo Rodríguez) "LZ" Rioja
Top Pick!
94 points James Suckling: "Very pretty and aromatic with plum and orange peel with floral undertones. Medium to full body, with very fine tannins and a beautiful, fine-grained finish. Drinkable now, but a year or two will real show it off. From organically grown grapes. " (09/2020) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It was not an easy vintage in Rioja, where they saw drought, bad fruit setting and minor damage from frost and hail, all of which caused a reduction in yields. But the end of the season was dry, the grapes were healthy, and based on ...

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Most of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 20 hectares, which are north-facing and located at 600 meters in altitude, affording the visitor with one of the most dramatically beautiful views of Rioja's main mountain ranges: the Sierra Cantabria mountains immediately to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda mountains to the south. This white win...

97 points Decanter: ""This dark, relatively tight-knit Rioja proves that the Gran Reserva category doesn't just indicate the supremely well-aged, relaxed and reposeful style of Rioja, but can also serve to draw drinkers' attention to outstanding wines of density and tenacity which still have a way to run along their potential ageing trajectories. Look out for dark, urgent fruits here sweetened and back-lit by cunningly angled oak, with intense, deep, fresh and searching flavours in which the 10% of Graciano seems to be working overtime. A Rioja of innate...

Based in the Southern Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is a bodega producing expressive, regionally specific wines at very reasonable prices. They are entirely self reliant in grapes, all of which are grown in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. The vineyards are closer to the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, a range whose elevation and snow-covered peaks are even more dramatic than the Sierra Cantabria range to the north. This is made from 100% Tempranillo grown in iron rich clay soils. In fact, this red...

This Gran Reserva is from some of their oldest Tempranillo and Graciano vines, planted in 1931 and 1946. It is elegant, generous and a precociously delicious treat for now, or over the next 15 years. Miguel Merino makes, as he likes to put it, an "updated classic" style of Rioja, all from his own 2 hectares of vines and several hectares of vineyards owned by a close friend. All the fruit is from sloped vineyards (Miguel is a fan of his slopes) within the cooler climate Rioja Alta town of Briones, which makes his wine a terrific showcase of the terroir (e...

2016 Sierra Cantabria "Unica" Reserva Rioja
Top Pick!
94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Reserva Unica comes from a single vineyard located in the alluvial soils beside the Ebro river. Made from 97% Tempranillo and 3% Graciano that was all destemmed and aged 24 months in 30% new French and America oak, this deep, concentrated 2016 packs some serious muscle in its blackcurrants, black cherry, licorice, toasted spice, and dried earth-like aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, with a dense, concentrated mid-palate and ripe tannins, give bottles a few years in a cold cellar and enjoy over the following 10-15...

93 points James Suckling: "This is a lean and finely textured red with blackberry and blueberry character. Wild herbs. Burnt orange peel. Medium body. Tight and refined." (07/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The flagship red 2013 Reserva, the wine most people call simply Remelluri, was cropped from a cool, wet, challenging year, and it has a little less alcohol and higher acidity than the previous harvest. It had an élevage of 20 months in oak barriques. It has an herbal twist reflecting the conditions of the year, and it is developed an...

91 points James Suckling: "Big blackberry, chocolate and caramel nose with some spicy oak. This is a pretty bold wine on the palate, but the tannins are not out of line and the overall impression is of expansiveness rather than heaviness. Relatively supple finish. Drink or hold." (08/2018) K&L Notes: A longtime participant in the wine business, Miguel sold wine for wine distributors in the States as well as worked as an export manager. Miguel found success every step of the way, and then decided that rather than retire, he wanted to fulfill his dream o...

94 points James Suckling: "Aromas of wet earth, spice and dark berry follow through to a full body, round and soft tannins and a long and decadent finish. Black olive and dark fruits. This is the only wine made from Contino in this year. Drink now." (07/2017) K&L Notes: In 1973, Contino was founded and became the first of the new wave of single vineyard Rioja estates. Today, the winery makes some of Rioja's finest wines, polished and comparably modern, but with a sense of balance and restraint that gives them amazing elegance and great longevity. Simpl...

2010 López de Heredia "Viña Tondonia" Gran Reserva Rosado Rioja (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Back In Stock!
94 points Vinous: "Copper-tinted orange color. A wild, expansive bouquet displays an array of red fruit and floral qualities, along with hints of baking spices, vanilla, orange pith and toasted nuts. Stains the palate with gently sweet strawberry, tangerine, hazelnut pastry and candied rose flavors that are firmed by a spine of juicy acidity. Shows excellent depth as well as energy and finishes extremely long and silky, with resonating florality and a sappy red berry quality. (JR)" (06/2020) K&L Notes: López de Heredia truly follows the classic adage o...

93 points James Suckling: "Aromas of subtle red fruit with plums, spice and cedar. Some dried flowers and dried spices, such as paprika. It’s medium-bodied with some pretty, ripe fruit in the center palate, fine tannins and a citrus and cedar undertone to the finish. Drink or hold." (10/2020) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The classic Haro-styled red 2015 Viña Alberdi, sold abroad with the mention of Reserva and in Spain as Crianza, is a good introduction to the house style: balsamic reds with abundant notes of sweet spices and cigar ash, de...

95 points James Suckling: "A tight and linear red now with very long and direct palate that is driven and intense. Medium to full body, bright blackberry and mineral character. Just a baby now. Give it three to four years to soften. A beauty. Try in 2021." (01/2019) 94 points Vinous: "Saturated, brilliant ruby. Explosive, seductively perfumed aromas of dark berry preserves, cherry-cola, incense, floral oils and vanilla, along with suggestions of mocha, licorice and woodsmoke. Sweet and seamless in the mouth, offering intense blackberry, cherry preserve...

This is a delicious, clean and fresh, forward style of Rioja, packed in a 3-liter bag-in-box for maximum value. The bag-in-box, long a popular format in Europe, has finally started to catch on in the United States. And with good reason, as it allows you to open a box and enjoy its contents for days, even weeks, with no drop off in flavor. For the equivalent of $6.25 per bottle, this is one red value that you do not want to miss!

2019 Bodegas Muga "Flor de Muga" Rosé Rioja
New!
93 points James Suckling: "A creamy-textured rosé with sliced peach, orange peel, cinnamon stick, crushed stones and some citrus and vanilla. It’s full-bodied, dry and beautiful. Intense finish. Drink or hold." (11/2020) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There is now a white with the same name, so I added the color to each name to distinguish them. The 2019 Flor de Muga Rosado was produced with Garnacha grapes from a dozen plots of old vines in the Alto Najerilla zone of Rioja Alta, where they have traditionally sourced the grapes for their ros...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Putting my nose in the glass of the 2007 El Puntido Gran Reserva transported me to the classical Riojas from yesteryear. The wine has a fully developed nose with all the textbook descriptors of a good aged Rioja—forest floor, cigar ash, cold bonfire, truffle, cherries in liqueur, blonde tobacco, spices and iodine. But this is a classical Gran Reserva that has something that was not that traditional, and it comes from a single vineyard and matured in brand new French oak barrels for 28 months. But time in bottle h...

96 points Decanter: "Arana commemorates one of La Rioja Alta's historic families. The Tempranillo (95%) and Graciano (5%) are aged separately in American oak barrels for three years before blending, then for three years in bottle (two years less than the 904, and six years less than the 890). The winery's keynote to this Rioja is 'freshness'. I agree. (SJE)" (08/2020) 96 points James Suckling: "Lots of mushroom and walnut aromas with plum and leather, too. It’s full-bodied, but very soft and creamy-textured with lots of old wood, mushroom and ripe frui...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The red 2016 Cune Crianza is an affordable and classical blend of Tempranillo with some 15% Garnacha and Mazuelo that is easy to drink and understand, with a soft palate and an approachable profile. It has a bright nose with red fruit rather than black, quite aromatic and expressive. The palate is soft and approachable, very easy to drink, with a touch of freshness. They produced a whopping 4.5 million bottles of this! The bottle I tasted was bottled in April 2019 after 12 months in barrique. There are eight diff...

To honor the 100th anniversary of this well known Rioja white, Cune decided to hit their cellars and uncork a number of vintages to see how they had aged. It turns out that the bottlings from the late 1950's to the early 1970's had aged fantastically, and the person who had made these landmark wines was none other than our friend, the legendary Ezequiel "El Brujo" García! They brought in Ezequiel, who in turn brought in his copious notes, and contributed his expertise and years of experience to the project. This Rioja white is a delicious throwback to Cu...

96 points James Suckling: "A rich and dense red with deep and rich flavors of spice, smoked meat, mushrooms and berries. Medium to full body. Extremely long and creamy. Wonderful fruit and balance." (07/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I previewed three vintages of the village red form Lanciego in Rioja, starting with the 2014 Lanzaga. This was a great opportunity to check how the wine is evolving. They used larger barrels and are making the wine more transparent and increasing the amount of other grapes (it probably has less Tempranillo...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Marqués de Murrieta didn't produce their top red in 2008, so I tasted the 2009 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial. In 2009, the final blend was Tempranillo with 19% Mazuelo (or Cariñena), one of the highest percentages of Mazuelo ever. The grapes are now sourced from the La Plana vineyard within the Ygay estate, one of the higher-altitude plots at 485 meters. The grapes fermented and aged separately, the Tempranillo in American oak barrels and the Mazuelo in French barriques for 26 months, given its power. It ha...

94 points James Suckling: "Impressive, rich, dark-cherry and blackberry aromas with nicely cut oak influence. The palate has a sleek, smooth-honed feel with such impressive freshness and depth. Stunning, vibrant finish. 100% Tempranillo from several plots around Laguardia. " (07/2019) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The red 2017 Viñas de Gaín was marked by the frost of the 28th of April, when they lost 20% to 25% of the crop, but as I've seen in other wineries, the wines are much better than expected, especially when it comes to freshness, gi...

Sometimes it is just this easy.... "Hello, my name is Íñigo..." add "pre-phylloxera" and it is a cannot miss wine opportunity. This Íñigo is not looking for revenge, this one wants to make classically elegant Rioja. He does live and work in a fairy tale though. Íñigo Manso de Zuñiga Ugartechea and his wife and partner Yolanda García Viadero live in a 13th century century building surrounded by ungrafted bush vines, that were originally planted in 1864 by the Count of Hervias, who also founded the Rioja enology station in Haro. Medium-bodied with integrated tannins that are polished and fine. Goes on for minutes. A beautiful, traditional wine, as always. Drink or hold." (09/2020) K&L Notes: 96 points Tim Atkin "Bosconia faces south and has plenty of fruit sweetness, even in a very cool Atlantic vintage like 2008. Combining Tempranillo with 20% Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo, it’s a delightfully subtle, traditional Rioja. Reserva t...

Honorío Rubio is a Riojano white wine specialist. In a land best known for its incredibly age-worthy reds, among many die-hards out there it is undoubtedly the traditional whites which represent Rioja's finest and most original wines. These days, outside of Lopez de Heredia (whose whites are increasingly rare in the market) and the odd older bottles of Ygay Blanco, traditional white Rioja is tough to find. That's why we are so excited to be selling the wines of our newest DI producer, Honorío Rubio. Based in the high altitude Rioja Alta village of Cordov...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I find the 2014 Señorío de P. Peciña Crianza a bit advanced and with more oxidative aromas reminiscent of tea leaves and brick dust, intermixed with creamy oak and some balsamic undertones. The palate is medium-bodied, with marked acidity. 2014 seems like a lighter vintage for earlier drinking. 100,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2018. 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There is a new wine, the 2018 Anza Esp 1, produced with grapes from small plots of vineyards that Diego Magaña considers special for whatever reason, three or four plots that always over-deliver. In the old vines, he has different biotypes of Tempranillo and some Graciano, 8% to 10% Viura, and Garnacha from different soils, all fermented in stainless steel and open-top 500-liter oak barrels with some full clusters and matured in used oak for 14 months. The two wines have a similar profile, which is all about fine...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This 2004, from a superb vintage shows a beautiful light red color with a brick rim and a superb nose redolent of balsamic woods, spices, leather, well-hung meat, incense and truffles. The light to medium-bodied palate shows fully resolved tannins, great acidity and pure, pungent flavors that linger in the mouth forever and that can only be Rioja. This is a wine to smell over and over again. It might sound like an exaggeration, but this wine is still too young and you should wait a little bit and drink the superb...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The idea with the white 2018 Iraun is to produce a Viura with freshness and subtleness, aged in oak but without being overpowered by wood and creaminess. In reality, it's a Viura-based blend with some 20% other white varieties, Garnacha Blanca, Maturana Blanca and Malvasía Riojana, with only 12.5% alcohol and good freshness from an ancient plot of vines in the village of El Villar. It fermented with indigenous yeasts, and the fermentation started in stainless steel but finished in a combination of tinaja and a us...

Full-bodied with lots of fruit, considering its age, as well as hints of smoke, tobacco, bark and black tea. Some balsamic at the finish. Traditionally styled with lovely results. Drink or hold." (10/2020) 94 points Vinous: "The 2011 Rioja Gran Reserva 904 has been one of my go-to cuvées since my earliest days as a wine lover. Sandra Bravo, vigneron, member of the "Rioja n' Roll" group of young winemakers in Rioja, and a real up-and-coming talent, did not grow up in a vine growing or winemaking family. She studied, learned on the job, and when an opportunity arose to purchase a small bodega in Rioja Alavesa, she went for it. This crianza is delicious, from a challenging vintage in 2014, but with lovely spicy cherry fruits, minerality and a structure that highlights fruit and terroir over any overt oak. Impressive stuff!

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Always sold later than the red, the 2014 Viñas de Gaín Blanco is similarly a blend from different vineyards in Laguardia and Elvillar. It was partly fermented in oak for some 30 days and aged in stainless steel with lees for 24 months. It has very little influence from the élevage and is quite fruit-driven, with a lightish palate. It's quite straightforward, pleasant and easy to drink. This is a selection of the white grapes in the old vineyards. 6,000 bottles. (LG)" (06/2019) K&L Notes: White Artadi? I am shoc...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2004 Pagos Viejos is inky purple with a sublime nose of pain grille, spice box, cherries, raspberries, and wild blue fruits. This is followed by a dense, plush, full-flavored, sexy wine with perfect balance and remarkable elegance for a wine so powerful. Although it can be enjoyed now, it deserves a minimum of a decade of cellaring after which it should drink well through 2047. Kudos to Bodegas Artadi for this tour de force! It was produced with grapes from three hectares of 117-year-old vines in the zone of Cárdenas, where the soils are red and have a lot of iron. It fermented in a combination of concrete and oak vats and 500-liter barrels with 20% full clusters and indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic in concrete and foudre and 12 months' aging in 500-liter barrels and a Stockinger foudre. Blackberries, black olives, chocolate, stone, cement and dried rosemary. Crazy wine. Blend of tempranillo and graciano. Release at the end of 2019. Better in 2024, but so great to taste young." 92 points James Suckling: "An attractive array of red-berry and plum aromas lead to a succulent and juicy palate. Good depth and vibrant, textural kick at the finish. Drink or hold." (06/2019) K&L Notes: Produced from en vaso (goblet, or bush trained) vines on a uniquely sited calcareous, sandy and clay vineyard just outside of Laguardia, El Sacramento may be a new project (this is in fact the first vintage) but should quickly become one of the top wines in all Rioja.
